Could you give some advice on Fred Thompson edit

About two days ago I added an article I read to the Fred Thompson article. Since then two editors (including one who plans on working for his campaign) have engaged in an effort to remove/downplay that article. Could you take a look, and let me know what you think?

In my reading of NPOV, opinions and analysis are allowed as long as they are encyclopedic and WP:ATT. Plantocal 01:28, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Deletion edit

Hey. I !voted in your RFA, and I believe I can trust you on this matter. I put this article up for speedy-deletion a few weeks ago. No admin has looked at it yet. I was wondering, if you could look at it. If you would like to, it is called Washington gubernatorial election, 2000, and Minnesota gubernatorial election, 2002. If you could, could you please look at them, and let me know whether you think they should be deleted, and then you can delete them. Thanks, Politics rule 20:33, 7 July 2007 (UTC)=)Reply

The reason no one was addressing your speedy delete request is because your request did not show up at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion, which is the only way Admins know that a request has been made for a speedy delete. The reason your request did not show up at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion was that you did not use the current transclusion string, here {{db-nonsense}}. You might want to repost your speedy delete request using {{db-nonsense}}. -- Jreferee (Talk) 17:04, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Zeraeph edit

Psychonaut provided some of those links at AN/I, and linked to his user watchlist page in that posting. After I saw the evidence there, I was a bit unsure about a block (since the incidents were separated by a number of months). However, I saw SandyGeorgia was also harassed by Zeraeph in some incident back in September 2006, and that's what pushed me over. After I saw Jimbo's note at Zeraeph's talk page, I decided to give Zeraeph the BOTD, and I unblocked him. Nishkid64 (talk) 18:04, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

User:Ryan Postlethwaite/New admin school edit

Any chance you can take a look at the above page before I start it to see if the format is to your liking? I really like your "newbie admin school" idea - I think it may be better done as a help sheet that new admins can refer to, with a seperate help desk they can post to to ask questions. Another format idea would be to go through step by step and explain exactly what each component of the admin tools does, and when to use them. e.g. on the blocking form, having account creation blocked - explain it and show what situations to use it in. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Ryan Postlethwaite 18:38, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Page about Mary Manin Morrissey edit

I wanted it to be known that the statements made about me on the discussion about Mary Manin Morrissey are entirely untrue and slanderous. I have never had any restraining orders against me and I have never stalked anyone in my life. These lies are being perpetrated against me for retaliation for speaking out against the corruption I witnessed firsthand at Living Enrichment Center. [1][2] It is a rule on Wikipedia that if statements of a slanderous nature are made about a living person then they must be removed. I have therefore removed these untrue statements about me. -- Andrew Parodi 10:29, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

V edit

What happened is that Tim Vickers tried to add to RS that no non-academic sources could be used in science, medicine, humanities, and social sciences, unless scholarly sources weren't available. [3] It was clearly a major policy change, and RS is just a guideline, so it was reverted, and Tim was advised to go to WP:V if he wanted to make a policy change. He did, and the debate continued. Marskell arrived and said that, as a matter of fact, reliable non-scholarly sources are already "actively suppressed" (his words) on certain articles, giving Global warming as a result.

I was taken aback by this, and suggested we add something to V to make clear that all reliable sources are welcome in all areas, while making it clear that scholarly sources are highly valued. That's what the current version says. Some editors want to change it to say that non-scholarly sources may "also be used," or words to that effect, but I think the consensus is behind the current version, which is:[4]

Academic and peer-reviewed publications are highly valued and usually the most reliable sources in areas where they are available, such as history, medicine and science. Material from reliable non-academic sources is also welcome in these areas, particularly if they are respected mainstream publications. The appropriateness of any source always depends on the context. Where there is disagreement between sources, their views should be clearly attributed in the text.

Hope this background helps. SlimVirgin (talk)(contribs) 23:51, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your opinion welcome at deletion review for Plot of Les Mis edit

After Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Plot of Les Misérables closed as a deletion, I'm challenging the way the closing administrator acted as in violation of Wikipedia rules. Your participation is welcome at that discussion, Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2007 July 14. Advice edit

Hi just wondering if you could give me some advice please? My username Tangerines I have used since I joined wikipedia, and that is what appears in my signature. I am a member of the Tibet project on wikipedia, and have made a number of edits on Tibet related articles and also on talk pages. Whilst I have my own personal views on the subject of Tibet I try to ensure that my edits are NPOV. In addition I have reverted POV edits by Tibetan supporters and also reverted POV edits by pro- PRC (Gov't of China) users. Given that the edits by those who are pro-PRC are more common, there have been more reverts made of any such edits that are POV. Mostly these are made by anonymous IP users, some of whom take offence at having their edits reverted and who accuse myself and others of bias based on the fact that more reverts have been made of pro-PRC edits. This has been going on for some time now. Yesterday when checking through my watchlist I came across what looked like an edit made by my username, even though I knew I had not made it. When I checked though it had been made by a new user with the name Tangerime whose sole contribution to wikipedia thus far has been to add WP:China on quite a number of article talk pages. The wikipedia policy on usernames states usernames that closely resemble the name of another Wikipedia user and may cause confusion are inappropriate and not allowed. I am loathe to approach this user as I am also quite sure they have deliberately registered the username to be similar to mine and presumably so as to cause confusion. As you can see from here [5] it looks very confusing as to who has edited. What can be done about it? Thank you and apologies for such a long message! ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 02:49, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi thanks for replying. Do I need to provide the link I gave above showing how it is confusing? And would I be best simply keeping it very short just stating there is a new user called tangerimes and as we are both editing similar articles it will cause confusion? Would that be enough? thanks. ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 03:01, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated. ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 03:11, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image (Image:ACAT_logo.JPG) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:ACAT_logo.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Bleh999 03:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:Stranger Issue 15.JPG edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Stranger Issue 15.JPG. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 07:09, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

List of atheist Nobel laureates edit

No, a speedy close isn't really appropriate, at least not on procedural grounds. I closed the prior AfD as No consensus; although this defaults to Keep, it isn't equivalent to a consensus for keeping, and therefore doesn't prejudice re-nomination (at least as I understand it). Also, bear in mind that this is a bundle nom, so the situation is somewhat different. I have no opinion on the outcome of the AfD, but it should be left to run its full course. WaltonOne 16:16, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, as I explained, the second nomination is a bundle of several "List of X Nobel laureates", which addresses one of the issues brought up in the previous AfD; as such, I don't think this is the same situation at all. I won't intervene to speedy-close; just let the AfD run its course, and see what happens. WaltonOne 17:09, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello there! Since you're an active admin online who hasn't voted in this particular AfD, I wanted to ask your opinion about the AfD going on here. Eliz81 17:18, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

... and that's exactly why I consulted with an admin before doing anything! Thanks very much for the advice. Just for future reference, what would be the types of AfDs that non-admins could close? Eliz81 17:35, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wider Attention system edit

Thank you, Jreferee! I was thinking about a quality control system, however really that is what the wiki process is all about -- if the page doesn't really belong, you can remove the tag. As for the infobox-related discussion, I personally believe it belongs, as it's a discussion on a more remote part of Wikipedia (as opposed to the village pump, for example) that has relevance to people other than the ones who frequent the page. It's something everyone could look at and participate in. Also, consider using {{watt box}} as it presents the list in nice box form. MessedRocker (talk) 22:10, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Non-free images edit

Nearly all of the non-free images in that "disputed" backlog right now are tagged as having no fair-use rationale. For these images, admins can do one of two things to clear the backlog (assuming no rationale has been provided by someone else):

  1. Add an appropriate use rationale.
  2. Delete the image.

If you delete the image, be sure to remove links to the image from any articles it appeared in. I tend to err on the side of deletion because our backlog is so large, it's hard for me to justify doing a bunch of work to determine whether the image's use is justifiable - but that's purely a philosophical point and not anything policy speaks to either way, so you should feel free to approach it in whatever way makes the most sense to you. Thanks for offering to help clear the backlog! (ESkog)(Talk) 18:13, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for participating in My RfA which closed successfully. I am honored and truly more than a little humbled by the support of so many members of the community. It's more than a bit of a lift to see comments on my behalf by so many people that I respect. I'll do my best to not disappoint you or the community. - Philippe | Talk 06:42, 23 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
