Way too much

Please take a look at this sort of agressive behaviour on Ivan Gundulić [1], calling out another respected senior admin @Vanjagenije: [2] + calling another senior admin "a clown"[3]. and general slurs and lack of WP:Civility [4]. Please note that this is an older editor, who has previously waged a full crusade over the same issue, some 5 years ago and than again ( WP:BATTLEGROUND). You are being messaged because there was a bug in UTRS that made it look like you had access to no appeals in the system. This has now since been patched and will be tested more before fully implemented again. You can track the progress if you wish here. I appreciate your patience and wanted to stop by to say try again, and let me know if anything else is wrong. Please also ping me if you reply here. Absolutely untrue. Are you really taking this aggressive an approach on your first day back after a loooooooong-term block? Not smart, my friend. It's not about you, it's about the article, the same article you were banned for assuming ownership of. Now chill out. SolarFlashDiscussion 18:21, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

That sock

Did it look familiar to you? I have a recollection of seeing these edits before--a combination of two fascination, accidents and terrorism, and LGBTQ celebrities. They restored an edit originally made by this account a while back, but that could just be a coincidence. Anyway, I'm having a hell of a time going through these BLP edits which just add poorly-verified stuff to articles, like slime. Drmies (talk) 15:27, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Feels vaguely familiar, but I can't pinpoint it. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆 𝄐𝄇 15:35, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
Here is another one--geolocation matches, as do the edits (that Lost Island stuff, the celeb trivia material), but it's on a IPv6 range. Drmies (talk) 15:49, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
Oddly weak, low level blecch. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆 𝄐𝄇 16:18, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

David Cole

If the man talks for 2 hours about how there was a Holocaust then you can decide he is not a denier. It's as good a source as the others listed here which are just articles that mention his name and add the epithet denier without citing anything he has said. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AGoodPitch (talkcontribs) 14:10, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

,@AGoodPitch:, please read the article and review the reliable sources that describe him in exactly that way. I have no idea what his current views are (nor do you, actually, because people say all sorts of things they may or may not believe), but when he was younger he certainly became known for exactly that. Arbitration, Input and Block Request

Hi Jpgordon, I am just writing to you to ask for your advice and assistance in resolving a continuing problem with a certain 'Kiengir'. I apologise for occupying your time but really require your help in enforcing some preventative measures against the relevant account. Though I have attempted to facilitate a dialogue numerous times and pursue a more diplomatic route, the user is disinterested until his edit is enforced, there is simply no room for a difference of opinion. This is becoming problematic as he consistently targets articles related to Ukraine, finding the term 'Ukrainian' and intententionally removing it. Upon further inspection of his page, it appears that Ukraine related articles are not the only to have been subject to this 'harassment', other ethnic groups opposed to by Hungarian nationalists have also been puntatively edited by 'Kiengir' including articles concerning: Croatia, Romania and Austria. It appears that the user is 'Not Here to Build a Wikipedia' but rather to channel potential nationalist inclinations through his edits. I am really struggling to deal with this alone and would be so grateful of your assistance. I am aware that you have had some experience with the user but within a few months he had returned to edit warring and other counter-productive measures. Engaging with the user as I said can be problematic not only because diplomacy simply does not work but because he is prone to 'gross incivility': "Don't you ever dare to modify my personal page", "Which part of this simple logic do you not understand?", "see, your problem is with the English language. You do not understand what means CONTEMPORARY. Check a vocabulary or talk with an English teacher, maybe the third time you won't make yourself again ridicoulus!", "Your grammar lesson is what you had to learn, since then you would not make the edit that you made, the rest is a useless trash talk. If you do not answer anymore", "B****s..t, if I would have wanted to hide anything from the Hungarian fans I would have make disappear half of he content that is heavily citing everything about Hungarians", "you have to ashamed about your behavior". He has been involved in edit warring up to 6 times, disruptive editing up to 3 times, canvassing 2 and being on the ANI page more than 4 times. As previously stated, he regularly 'harasses' and 'vandalises' articles related to Ukraine whilst bolstering the Hungarian cause across Wikipedia at the detriment of his broader political opponents, he is consistently engaged in 'edit-warring' and is "Not here to build an encyclopedia". I really dont see why this would not be enough rationale for a block at least on the topic of Ukraine, of which he regularly targets, not to productively contribute but to remove anything that happens to mention 'Ukrainian'. There have been instances whereby I have begun editing a page only to find he had intentionally found the page to undo my edits, not only does this breach Wikipedia guidelines but as you can imagine it creates a toxic environment in which one feels they cannot contribute to Wikipedia. For the wellbeing of Wikipedia and users I really hope this message reaches you and the relevant user can blocked.Thank you very muchDanielLerish (talk) 17:42, 28 September 2020 (UTC)DanielLerish

Take it to WP:ANI; I've got no particular insight into or interest in this user, and most of your examples of his "gross incivility" barely rise to the level of "slight rudeness". --jpgordon𝄢𝄆 𝄐𝄇 22:41, 28 September 2020 (UTC)!

Under which policy blocking someone for "assuming bad faith" is acceptable

That would be Wikipedia:Blocking policy, A block for disruption may be necessary in response to: ... breaching the policies or guidelines ..., and of course WP:AGF is a guideline. You're right that an expired block makes this moot, but I'm surprised to see an admin question whether assuming bad faith is blockable. Levivich harass/hound 19:16, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi again Josh. I've started a new thread here instead of continuing in the one above as this may be a long term problem and you'll want to archive at some point. OK, so our friend is back under the new alias of The kroll of Krolls. Here is a previously blocked IP sock's edit vs The kroll of Krolls identical edit (Note: edit summaries in the same broken English). Let me know if you require more diffs. If this is in any way an inconvenience, just say the word and I'll take it to SPI. Many thanks! Robvanvee 06:37, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

It has been moving very slow tonight. CLCStudent (talk) 01:51, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

what's your "legitimate reason"?

Citing a Harvard prof writing in International Review of Law and Economics actually is a "legitimate reason." But where's your reason? Or do you not apply your own rules to yourself? If you insist on getting involved, may I suggest you either play the ball and address the issue or, if you see it as your job to play the man, then step up and block me instead of reverting me without feeling any obligation to explain yourself or otherwise justify your edits.--Brian Dell (talk) 07:01, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Why would I block you? You made an extremely obnoxious edit summary, as you are fully aware, and I slapped you with a trout. I didn't bother reading past the obnoxious part. I don't even know if you're right or you're wrong in this case, and I don't care. There's been a lot of problematic editing over the years on that article, obviously, and it's contentiousness has more than once drawn my attention, generally to the edit warring which got me involved in the first place (in the form of responding to an unblock request.) I'll admit I've got a long-standing annoyance with you, from some or another disagreement we had probably over a decade ago, and that contributed to an over-reaction on my part. I probably would have ignored it from someone else. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆 𝄐𝄇 08:20, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
So you revert in order to "trout slap" someone? What would you think of an ordinary non-admin doing this, reverting cuz "I think that editor is obnoxious" and claiming no interest in the article? It's exceedingly obvious you could've locked the page but decided to revert because you didn't want to lock to what you felt was the "wrong" version. Which is fine but if you are going to take sides then get in the ring instead of putting on this neutrality act. The fact one side of a fairly evenly matched dispute considers you one of theirs shows others don't buy the pose any more than I do.--Brian Dell (talk) 09:19, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Re: Welcome back

Thank you. I've had better months, that's for sure. But I'm on the road to recovery, and the whole "not dying" part I consider pretty important.--Calton | Talk 10:06, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Sock is back part 3

Hey Josh. After your assistance here a few days ago, I thought Id ask you directly again instead of going the SPI route. I hope you don't mind. If so, just say the word. So our sock is back, making identical edits to the exact same articles from their freshly created account in the familiar broken English we've come to expect: sales figures from unreliable sites to Dom Omar related articles as has been their modus operandi all along. Here is their contributions page. Please could you take a look when you are able and shout if you need diffs or want this to go to SPI. Robvanvee 06:48, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

No problem. More detail than I need. Just point me to user and I'll check, this one's real obvious. Found one other in the course of this. It's quick and painless for me. Go to SPI and they seem to want to glorify the socks with tags; I'd just as soon quietly nuke them. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆 𝄐𝄇 06:54, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

Okay, so an admin named Euryalus claimed that I was an IP address from school or a public place which isn't true and therefore I want to report him because my block reason wasn't ok, in fact, the IP Address is from home and only one person uses the computer. So, I want to report Euryalus for a bad block reason--84.108.7.2 (talk) 14:13, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Be careful. If this is not a shared IP address, if you are the only person to edit from that IP address, then you are personally responsible for the anti semitic death threats originating from that address. --Yamla (talk) 14:27, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Ireland Dept of Defence

Dear Josh,

Thanks for intervening in this issue. I have tried to engage the other editor in discussion, to no avail.

This does lead me to a query… how does one, independent, bona fide, editor manage to sustain an edit when someone, possibly or probably acting on behalf of the subject of an article, keeps deleting the edit? Despite researching, I’m totally unclear as to how an article is submitted for mediation or a dispute resolved.

Incidentally, I’m happy to provide the citation required in my amendment, but don’t want to attempt any further edits in view of your notice.

Regards, 18:19, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Basically, you ask for more eyeballs. Our dispute resolution guidelines can be very helpful. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 18:58, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Josh,

An interesting development… another editor has joined in to take the place of the individual who kept deleting my edit.

My view, this is a colleague from either the Dept of Defence, or the Public Service generally.

This is clearly an abuse of the system as the section involved can, presumably, simply line up editors.

I would be interested in any comments you have on this.

Regards,

GreatRedFox (talk) 15:55, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

Your view is entirely incorrect. User:Bastun is an experienced editor, with fifteen years of experience and understanding Wikipedia policies. Your edit is not properly sourced; as Bastun said,Claims like this need an actual inline citation, not a body text "see this newspaper." See WP:V, WP:RS and Template:cite. Since I was just commenting on your the edit warring, not the contents of the edit, when I advised both you and Spleodrach to knock it off, I didn't look at the edit in question in any detail. You can build the inline citation easily enough, but you certainly do need to do so when you re-insert the material the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth time... --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 16:18, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
Confirming I am in no way involved with the Department of Defence, the public service, or the Irish defence forces. Spleodrach and I often edit the same pages, but that's only to be expected, seeing as we're both Irish. I have never met them that I know of in real life, and have no idea who they actually are in real life. GreatRedFox, my edit summary outlined exactly what was wrong with the insertion, and also how to correct it. The verifiability policy is part of one of the main pillars of Wikipedia, and is linked from the welcome message on your own talk page, that you received when you started editing. We all had to learn the basics when we started, including how to Template:cite reliable sources. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 17:03, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

Recent unblock

Jpgordon, I would like to request more information about your unblock here, and possible reconsideration. Putting aside the sock history, the unblock request itself was written to be deliberately misleading. The unblock request claims the issue was "possibly due to my addition of the intangible heritage infobox", rather than "allegedly saying that I was restoring edits made by sockpuppets of said user", then adding "the diff was here". However, what is linked is clearly not a diff, it is an oldid. This is to hide the actual edit, which is this one, of which the infobox is a tiny part. They even link to an actual diff later ("was also added by a user named "Robertsky" here"). On sock history, misleading edit summaries etc. are common with this case. There are also quite a few similar unblock requests/posts ([7][8][9][10]). CMD (talk) 10:41, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

If more problems arise, reblocking is simple. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 13:42, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Chipmunkdavis, is there any explanation as to why you're avoiding engaging in direct communication with me or address your response on that article's talk page, instead of vindictively engaging an admin in an attempt to get me reblocked? I'm not Ineedostopforgetting, I wasn't the one that harassed you, so I kindly ask for you to cease associating me with them, and actually assume good faith instead of thinking everything is all malicious here. The edit history of Hawker centre is a huge mess, which is why I had brought up Robertsky's diff that the infobox wasn't some sock's idea, which I had reintroduced. And forgive me for not knowing all of Wikipedia's jargon as I was previously not aware of the differences between "diff" and "oldid", which is why I wrote "diff". Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

  Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Am I being overly suspicious, or is MollyPollyRolly (talk · contribs) worth investigating here? The editor has 109 edits since March, 100 of which are Welcome messages on user talk pages. There are three (3) edits to Article space, and, oh, and two comments at WP:ANI [11] [12]. --Calton | Talk 15:29, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

I don't know if it's harmful -- I haven't checked the editors being welcomed yet -- but yea, peculiar, since (almost) literally the only thing this editor has done from their very first edits is add Welcome templates. Hello I see you unblocked this user [13]. They seem to be back to using IP addresses to avoid scrutiny [14]. Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Thamesinfotech

This new account (created August 18) wants to recreate Draft:Sheikh Asif, which has been recreated many times by socks, but they can't because it's extended-confirmed-protected. Compare also this request to be mentored with this blocked sock's request to be mentored. I think it's worth a check. BTW, there's also Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Sardar Nadir Ali, which apparently shares the same focus.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:53, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi I just see you tagged me here you can check my account also I am not any sock I found his article live before somedays so I thought will edit it as that was written fully promotional and nothing else after that I see it was deleted because the creator was blocked so I some comments and ask for help and anyone can ask for it but now I open wikipedia and found discusss Discussion about Sheikh AnnieAsjid (talk) 04:19, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

The blocking admin shouldn't be reviewing unblock requests from a user who they themselves blocked. Also, you didn't specify who the sock master is, but that's less important than the conflict of interest unblock review. 199.8.32.6 (talk) 20:01, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Potential LTA

Hello again, I recently noticed that you have blocked Albertbelgium as well as the oldest known (to me at least) account, Magnoffiq (and you surely remember of the SPI). I was wondering if you were familiar with this editor before the Magnoffiq account? In any case, since per WP:BE sock contributions would be reverted, I looked a bit and didn't bother too much as most are now buried under others, at the same time noticing some apparently decent contributions like Special:Diff/1045363922. So far it seems to be some LTA who doesn't care, resets their IP address and creates a new account, perhaps since a long time. Like in this case, since they're not immediately discovered and that in the batch some contributions are good (and not citing disinformation sources as sometimes happens with this user), it's likely that a number of past accounts were also not reverted (you didn't seem to apply BE reverts either or to tag them so they can easily be grouped). So I wondered if other than DENY, if it was because it's a very old familiar LTA that I'm only recently familiar with? If so, do you think it'd be worth writing an TLA entry (and would you remember what one of the oldest accounts was)? Thanks, —PaleoNeonate – 23:57, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

Mostly a mix of DENY and laziness. Probably more of the latter. "It's a goddamn sock, I don't care whose, kill it, next?" --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 00:52, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Edit-war

The editor you reverted at Breakfast at Tiffany's (film) has started an edit war over his changes. When I reported him at AIV, action was declined with the comment that the editor is already partially blocked. However, that's only from one article and his two years of disruptive behaviour with constant warnings is being overlooked.  Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Cream Soda

Care to explain your hasty, unexplained and bizarre decision to revert my edit to the cream soda article? Bigga, DG, Solo and Old Jamaica (for further evidence, though I didn’t even mention that brand) are all clear vanilla-flavoured cream sodas from the Caribbean. ‘Champagne Cola’, though similar to cream soda, is arguably not even a type of cream soda. The ONLY evidence in the article for red cream sodas there is the mention of Fanta cream soda, so that evidence is MUCH WEAKER but I didn’t delete any mention of red cream sodas on that basis. How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Unusual user

I'm almost certain that Anon3406, which was created today, is a sock of a known master, but I can't remember the name of the master or any socks. Several things struck me: immediately changing redirects to different targets, mostly of wild cats, later of flags; and later voting at a couple of AfDs. However, the most memorable tell was creating a userpage that lists his contribution history, which is rather distinctive. What do you think?--Bbb23 (talk) 03:18, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

I'd sure never seen the trick of transcluding the contributions onto the user page! I didn't even know you could transclude special pages. So I don't think I've seen this one before, or if I did, it's completely slipped my porous brain. Obvs not a new user. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 04:49, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

Not really. I didn't want to have 800 of those identical, very long links to the discussion showing up in my edit log. I'd rather answer a few redundant questions. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 23:30, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

All you had to do was create a shortcut. And BusterD is understating the number of page watchers. I only watch one of the affected pages and it took me a while to track it back to that discussion page. --SVTCobra 03:20, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, sorry about that. I've not made large-scale changes of this sort before, and didn't do it quite right. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 04:32, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
I actually came here to give you a notification about not adding an edit summary. I noticed a few of these edit on pages on my watchlist and assumed someone had gone around deleting these again, and I re-reverted my edit on Nirvana only after I find the discussion in your edit log. Just a warning, you might see more editors like us popping onto your talk page about this. Doc StrangeMailboxLogbook 06:56, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your work. For future reference (or if there are still more to do) for a significant edit being made to a large amount of articles, it would be good to include more of an edit summary. In this case for the thousands of page watchers on 700 articles. Again, thanks for your work. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 13:35, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

Just returning to WP after a bit of a break and wanted to thank you for the clean up you did here - looks like it was a bit of a thankless task so far so wanted to give some encouragement. I think it was the right call. If ediotrs on individual articles feel it is notable enough to include then these discussions should and can happen locally. Thanks again. Optometry

Hello, the optometry page should be about optometry and optometrists not ophthalmology, opticians or their programs/training. Understand the desire to compare and contrast but this is not the place. Better place for is the "eye care professional" page. Ophthalmology is eager to point out they are the only eye care professionals with a general medical degree: look up webmd or most ophthalmology pages. Feel it is necessary to point out optometry is the only program that grants degrees in eye care specifically and leave it at that. If the general public want to dig deeper they can elsewhere. I am a USA trained optometrist, have worked in all areas of eye care for many years, both optometry and ophthalmology, and have a good grasp of training and practical similarities and differences. I also own/operate a private practice and provide comprehensive medical eye care on a regular basis. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkeeper27 (talkcontribs) 07:21, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

May I know if you have even try to use check User tool to confirm the socks, before deleting, it was very rude that you have deleted, I have provided diffs there. You might have unintionally defended the abusive user Louis Aragon. It was on Wikipedia talk because the page is semi protected for the ips . Thanks 37.111.218.25 (talk) 06:30, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Nope. Your diffs don't suggest anything that would allow checkuser; this is two veteran users with a combined 25 years and 100,000 edits who agree you are wrong, and your suggestion that they are socking without serious evidence constitutes a personal attack; I suggest you desist. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 06:41, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
Now I have tried to move the content on Wikipedia namespace, can you please look at it, especially the second case where Louis Aragon editing the User page of Kansas Bear. 37.111.218.25 (talk) 06:54, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Personal attack

Hi Jpgordon, a renomated user you blocked before has just made an unacceptable personal attack in a talk page. Can you please check it?--109.52.244.177 (talk) 18:32, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

I see no personal attack; I see some slightly annoyed and intemperate language, but nothing even vaguely like an attack. That I blocked him for 3RR has nothing to do with your complaint. And "renomated" isn't a word, at least not in English. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 18:46, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Blocked user taunting another on talk page

Hey there. I see you blocked User:The Smokin Enochian - they've been antagonizing another user on their talk page, and showing no indication they're going to request an unblock. The other user is obviously getting heated, and I've advised them to take a breather. Could you possibly please consider revoking their talk page access and save further annoyance? Advice and/or assistance

I am coming to you primarily because you were involved in past arbitration for biographies of living persons. I am working on the biography of Martin Kulldorff, one of the authors of the Great Barrington Declaration (GBD), a policy document related to COVID-19. The GBD is controversial and fringe/alt. COVID-19 is a polarizing topic. Therefore, editing can be challenging because MEDRS, BLP, FRINGE/ALT, sanctions for two separate topics, all converge.

I am trying to work through a conduct issue with another editor (Alexbrn) and I have exhausted all attempts to work directly with the editor and that is where I could use your advice or direct assistance. I posted a summary on their talk page (following the dispute resolution recommendations) that explained what actions of theirs I felt were disruptive. Their response was simply "Take it to an admin board."

My question to you is can you assist in resolving this matter or is it more appropriate to take it to the ANI (or other)? As you'll see in the summary, I have tried repeatedly to de-escalate and work through our differences but the other editor is not interested in dispute resolution and continues with what I consider disruptive editing that is negatively impacting the biography for readers (for example, reverting to what I and others consider unverified content on a biography).

I'm trying to keep this brief and there is plenty you can read from the summary and the links provided there (lengthy discussions on talk pages, notice boards, etc). I have sought wide consultation in persistent content disputes. The underlying issue, I believe, is there is a group of editors who think I am editing in a biased manner and who I believe are editing in a biased manner and we have simply not been able to resolve those issues very effectively without impacting the biography. While I don't want the drama of this, I also believe very firmly that a group of editors should not be able to drive off another editor (they have at times been explicit in that desire to drive me away). I do believe that wikipedia is still an important source of information for readers. But the quality of that information is dropping and in this case, I believe it's caused by a lack of adherence to and respect for policy in regards to biographies. I think this issue is exactly the type the arbitration described, especially in the section titled "Problems with biographies of living persons".

Your advice and/or assistance if you chose to help, would be greatly appreciated.

Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Edits) 01:39, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

Take it to ANI. I'm not going to dive into a 14-year old arbitration. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 01:48, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the advice.
Is there more recent and hence more relevant arbitration that would help inform me? The primary reason I brought up the arbitration is because of the {{Ds/alert|blp}} banners that get placed on user and article talk pages that link to that old arbitration (that's how I found out about it, another editor placed the banner on my talk page). The still-frequent use of those banners makes it seem like the arbitration is still relevant. But if it has simply become 'old news' and is no longer really relevant, I will stop referring to it myself.
Thanks again for the feedback.
Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Edits) 02:18, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
I really don't know; BLP isn't one of my particular focuses, so I'm not particularly informed regarding current "case law". --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 04:14, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Hello Mr. Gordon, I was wondering if you had any more info on Musti Faun who you said was in The Mystic Knights Of The Oingo Boingo with you? I don't think I know anything about this person but I have a hunch "Musti Faun" is a stage name? Thanks, TitanicFog (talk) 02:12, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

Oh how excellent - The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo! I have not heard those words for a while. May I help out? Netherzone (talk) 02:39, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
Sure. We're having a real hard time actually documenting the membership of the band from that period; there's a ton of rumor and word of mouth and a paucity of reliable sources. I only know of two reliable sources with names of the members: an LA Times review from March 26, 1975, and a Variety one from April 7 1975. (There are pointers to my own copies of them at Talk:Oingo Boingo.) There are also a lot of photos, but the attributions of some are dubious. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 02:48, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

Thank you so much sir! And actually Danny, Charlie Unkeless, and Jan Munroe helped me identify the members! TitanicFog (talk) 02:58, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
Sure, and that's exactly word of mouth. See WP:V; unpublished personal communications of any sort don't work as sources. I'm not questioning the validity of any of this, just the suitability of it given Wikipedia's strict rules. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 03:30, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

Hey JP, can you tell me who is the master? BTW, when you review an unblock request, don't indent - it screws up the template, but don't ask me why. :-) --Bbb23 (talk) 12:41, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

I don't do that, but if for some reason the user puts indentation before the unblock request, the semi-automated unblock review tool doesn't remove the indentation, which is what causes the problem. Firekong808 is another sock in the MegaMack02 farm. G3 IP talk page

I just spotted (due to their talk page being added to my watchlist with my commenting on it) that you had G3 deleted the talkpage for User talk:160.2.59.92 about 20 minutes before they returned and mass pasted their 9kb "creations" from a past IP address's talkpage from Nov 2020, and pasted it verbatum. I blanked the page, but you may wish to G3 delete it again. Before you do so however, do have a look at User talk:98.36.244.15 (who has not edited since Nov 2020 when they were blocked for 6mo for the same type of talk page editings) as they appear to be the same person, just so you have some foresight with how they will likely respond. The amusing part first though is they think they are still? newly? blocked, and are asking for an unblock (with dubious reasoning), but (from what I can see as a normal user) they have no current blocks. I Got Loaded (Camille Bob song) moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, I Got Loaded (Camille Bob song), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. ~StyyxTalk? 23:43, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Joesmithroots

Hi, I've read your CU results, and I'm struggling a bit as to what to do going forward, especially with the unblock request from the older account. It's been a while, but my memory is the phenomenon I think you're describing was as much dependent on a particular ISP as it was on a country (I'm assuming you meant country when you said "region"). For example, I remember that one particular AT&T wireless range was notorious for having bunches of users on the same IP that had no apparent behavioral or technical connection, and that if a user used these ranges exclusively, it was often impossible to obtain any conclusive results. You may be describing a different phenomenon, though. If there's anything more you can provide, without violating policy of course, either here or by e-mail, please do so. Regardless, do you have any thoughts on the behavioral aspect? As behavioral analyses go, it's fairly simple and as I described it at the SPI. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 13:15, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

I'll look at the behavioral stuff later today. I tend to try to keep technical analyses and behavioral analyses separate, to avoid my own bias: if someone's misbehaving, I might be more inclined to read a marginal technical match as confirmed, and if someone seems to have a marginal technical match, I might be more inclined to disapprove of their behavior. That's just a policy I made for myself when I started CU duty. That being said, I think the IP usage pattern might well be a result of going online in internet cafes. Some countries, almost nobody has their own connectivity. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 14:25, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Ah, Internet cafes...I thought that went the way of the horse-and-buggy, but perhaps not so in some third-world countries.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:00, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
If my cafe theory is right, it's entirely possible there's an innocuous explanation for Udoxfarm finding that afd; I'd venture more likely something like "hey, check this out, teammate, they don't think Loofball deserves an article, give me a hand?" I'd be inclined to cut the older account a bit of slack; he has enough on his plate trying to keep Loofball in the encyclopedia. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 16:28, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
You mean you think they know each other? If they are Loofball "teammates", then they are probably editing from Nigeria (not asking you to comment on that).--Bbb23 (talk) 16:56, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Does anyone not in Nigeria know anything about Loofball? Nigeria indeed is one of those places where there are many IP addresses for each user and many users for each IP address. [20] --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 18:08, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Jpgordon,

I hope you are well and having a good weekend.

I saw that User:ImSonyR9 was reblocked but didn't see any recent activity on their SPI. Who was the recent sockpuppet that caused this indefinite block? There isn't any information in their deletion notice or on their User talk page that indicates this.

If you can't disclose this, that's okay, I was just curious about what has happened and if they were related to another SPI case. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 00:35, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

Regarding personal attacks

Can you please explain; Why you allowed their block to be reviewed again ??

  • Please take a look that even after getting blocked; they are still calling me as castiest and going out of the way to claim that I disrespected a profession; diff.
  • Disrespecting academia; even during block time diff literally saying that her scholarship is unworthy in comparison to me; (would have avoided it had it been only limited to me) but fearing possible repercussions, they slashed Thapar name from there; diff.
  • Even during block; How fair is to hurl abuse and say this: diff ? Even at time they are blocked ? Isn't it misuse of talk page aswell; ((their sub-optimal understanding of English is there to be seen (where they blown out a comment to rank me as castiest); where I made a comment in context of their desregard for sources they don't like and even calling reputed acaedemics as so called great scholar obviously they said it in derogratory fashion as their political view suggest; (their below par understanding and writting of English is obviously clear from their repeated threads)

I found it surprising that instead of extending their block for still ranting (making comments about profession; I never made); you let them request another unblock ? ∆ P&t ♀√ (talk) 04:23, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

I choose to avoid them after that slur; but when they got blocked instead of accpeting it as a punishment accordingly; they kept harasing me by pinging and calling me as a castiest (as shown in diff) above; cleaning their toilent etc. If you think I am wrong on any of my part; you are welcome to mention that on my talk page. ∆ P&t ♀√ (talk) 04:27, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

I didn't allow anything. The user inappropriately modified the declined unblock request, so I restored the original declined request and put the new one in the proper format. I've not reviewed a word in it otherwise, nor have I reviewed anything you've said here. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 04:38, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Not suprisingly; they are still inappropriately modifying their unblock request; diff, diff. Well, this is clearly not a constructive way of using talk page either while being blocked.

I agree on your part though; original admin who blocked them are in better position to review it, I feer though that a unknown admin might end up unblocking them ignoring their disruptive behaviour even during block. Thanks. ∆ P&t ♀√ (talk) 05:08, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

I wouldn't worry too much about that. And even if they did, the disruptive behavior would likely repeat, and the user would get blocked again. For example, I would notice it. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 16:03, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
