RfA thanks edit

I'd like to thank you for your support of my RfA, and the compliments. As I wrote, I was looking forward to feedback from the community, and I would like to let you know that you should please feel free to leave any further feedback for me you may have for me in the future at my Talk page. Thanks again. Jkelly 08:37, 25 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

I am, like JKelly above, another newly promoted admin here to say thanks. Please do keep an eye on me and my logs, especially while I'm learning the ropes with the new buttons. I hope I am able to live up to the expectations of yourself, the community and the role. Steve block talk 10:20, 25 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks from Ann edit

Hi, Orane. I just want to thank you very much for supporting my RfA, and to say also that I hope I'll make a good job of it. I'm supposed to be working on an assignment at the moment, and had delayed thanking people, but I'm finding the new rollback button so easy to use that I'm just keeping Wikipedia open on my browser while working on other things, and I thought I'd like to thank at least a few of my supporters while I'm here. Cheers. AnnH (talk) 19:31, 25 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

My RfA edit

Thanks. WikiThanks.
I would like to express my thanks to all the people who took part in my (failed) RfA voting. I was both surprised and delighted about the amount of support votes and all the kind words! I was also surprised by the amount of people who stated clearly that they do care, be it by voting in for or against my candidacy. That's what Wiki community is about and I'm really pleased to see that it works.
As my RfA voting failed with 71% support, I don't plan to reapply for adminship any more. However, I hope I might still be of some help to the community. Cheers! Halibutt 05:10, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

A voice of support... edit

... though maybe not for your article (yet). I just want to let you know that FAC can be brutal! Don't let that get you down, and keep in my mind that the people on FAC don't dislike you or your work, they just have incredibly high standards!

Celine Dion edit

I'm still not sure about the reliance on AMG. I did a quick search on Google books and found that a copy of the New Rolling Stone Album Guide is on there, and it includes a few paragraphs on Celine Deon. Search for her name here and hit the fourth link down. Incidentally, there's also a book of AMG reviews listed; you might consider referencing that as well as the websites (the content appears to be identical). I guess I'm just not sure about this... it seems like there should be other reviewers out there that have written about her music, but since I'm not a big music buff, I don't know where to tell you to look. --Spangineeres (háblame) 05:53, 1 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Take a look at Talk:Céline Dion. I've posted a number of reviews I found in a quick proquest search. I hope they're helpful. If you want to use any of them, I can get you the full info (title, etc.). --Spangineeres (háblame) 22:05, 2 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Paris Hilton edit

Hi Journalist - I edited Paris Hilton's entry today, removing it from the category "Pop Icons". I made my case on the talk page for the article, which was essentially that Paris Hilton's cultural value cannot be said to have extended so far as for her to be considered a pop icon. The category page for Pop Icons states that

"A Pop icon is a celebrity whose popularity (hence, "pop") remains constant or even increases as time goes by. Most celebrities, especially teen idols, exhuast the public's interest with extreme rapidity. A pop icon's celebrity often progresses into legendary status."

As Paris Hilton has only been famous for a couple of years, I did not feel that she belonged in a catergory alongside Marylin Monroe, James Dean, Ludwig von Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Buddha. So I edited her out - after all, we are told to Be bold. I am a fairly inexperienced Wikipedian, and I may have overstepped some boundaries here, but I would at the same time like to know exactly what the ettiquestte is in a situation like that, where you consider that an article has been put into a category that it doesn't belong in.--Victim Of Fate 17:50, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

It has been way to long! edit

A man is complaining to a friend "I had it all - money, a beautiful house, the best cars, and the love of a beautiful woman! Then POW its all gone!" "What happened?" Asks his friend. "My wife found out!"

  • Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go camping, and pitch their tent under the stars. During the night, Holmes wakes his companion and says "Watson, look up at the stars, and tell me what you deduce." Watson says "I see millions of stars, and even if a few of those have planets, it's quite likely there are some planets like earth, and if there are a few planets like earth out there, there might also be life!" Holmes replies, "Watson you idiot. Somebody stole our tent!"
I'd love to hear from you my friend, especially a joke. I think it's fair to say you owe me one lol. KnowledgeOfSelf | talk. 06:58, 6 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Are you familiar with tables and graphs? edit

Hey Orane. That joke is one of my all time favorites. I was wondering if you had any experience with tables and or graphs. I'm working on the 2003 NFL Draft and an other user has provided me to a link of how to use graphs and tables. It is a little to much for me to comprehend all at once. I did get rather far in it almost completed round 7! If you look at the page history you'll see what happened in my edit summary. I'm just wondering if you have any quick and easy tips that will help me in the now? Thanks KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 22:36, 7 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yea it took me a couple hours to get to round 7 and when my PC crashed I almost screamed, lol. I don't mind the construction of the graphs it's the addition of the college's the players are in that makes me grow tiresome of the work. Thanks again. Classic hates you edit

Hi. You may not be aware, but your user page looks drastically bad on the Classic skin. It seems it doesn't like the combination of the black border and the blue glow. I fooled around, and you could either use the following as a first line:

  <div style="padding: 10px; border: 10px solid black;">

(which doesn't have the blue glow) or you could use the markup from your talk page, which works fine. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 21:26, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' rollback edit

Orane (do you mind if I call you that?), I just noticed this revert of yours on Mariah Carey, and I thought I'd tell you about something to do with the administrators' rollback feature. Per Wikipedia:Revert, "Rollbacks should be used with caution and restraint. Reverting a good-faith edit may send the message that "I think your edit was no better than vandalism and doesn't deserve even the courtesy of an explanatory edit summary." It is a slap in the face to a good-faith editor; do not abuse it. If you insist on using the rollback feature for non-vandalism edits, be sure to explain on the talk page of the user whose edit(s) you reverted." I didn't think the edits were that great either, but just a simple edit summary explaining the revert goes very far; additionally, it means that Special:Recentchanges patrollers won't mistake the editor being reverted for a vandal. On an unrelated note, I read yesterday that somebody whom we both like received eight Grammy nominations, which is cool. :) Anyway, see you! Extraordinary Machine 21:54, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Michael Jackson move edit

I'm not really sure this does need to be moved, and it certainly shouldn't be moved without discussion at Wikipedia:Requested moves first. sjorford (talk) 22:13, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the late reply. I thought that the article needed to be moved as it would be more recognisable to the readers; there are over 15 "Michael Jacksons" on Wikipedia and this would set apart the "entertainer" from the "actor" or the "politician" etc (Please see: Wikipedia:naming conventions (precision)). The name would be similar to other artists with popular names (like Madonna's, whose page was renamed Madonna (entertainer) just to distinguish her from the other Madonna/Mary, Seal (musician) whose page is named as such to distinguished the person from Seal (device), Seal (1991 album) and so fourth.
Lastly, you stated that it should not be moved without discussion at Wikipedia:Requested moves, but that page is only for moves that require Admins or would otherwise prove controversial. As I thought that this edit wouldn't offend anyone, was commonsense, uncontroversal and simple, I made the change myself. I apologise if this edit crossed the line, and I realise that I should have even provided a brief explanation on the talk page; I was either very lazy—which is bad— or was rushing off the computer as I was late for work :). Sorry again. If you still have any concerns with any simple or Admin related actions, please dont hesitate to comment on it. (I will place this message on the talk page of the article.) Oran e (t) (c) (e-mail) 03:11, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
That's okay - sorry if I sounded a bit short in my message, but whenever such a popular page as that is moved without discussion beforehand, it sets off alarm bells in me. There's no easy way of telling if a move will be controversial, but I tend to err on the side of caution - at the very least, a quick message on the talk page can't hurt, After all, there's no move so urgent that it can't wait a day or two. sjorford (talk) 13:15, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

RE. 2003 NFL Draft edit

I'm not sure exactly what could be added to the article. Everything I've just tried to think of would be almost like I was attempting to analyze the draft. Pretty much original research. Any thoughts on what to add will be most welcome. And I'd say 16 myself. lol :-D KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 23:00, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Celine Dion edit

I don't think there will be links. I can get you the article titles (I'm not sure why I didn't do that in the first place!), but because most of the reviews are in news publications, and because most of them don't allow free online access of their archives, people will have to be proquest subscribers (which isn't particularly common) to read them online. However, finding the microfilm in a good library shouldn't be too tough if anyone wants to reference them. I'll try to get the article titles sometime Saturday. --Spangineeres (háblame) 00:43, 10 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Once Moore AFD edit

Hello, i assume you are an admin and i need your help. Once Moore is the new album by pop singer Mandy Moore and mandy herself has been very tightliped about it. Now the information on the article is pretty bare granted the information i could find. Apparently people from the a mandy moore forum have erased info on the page now you can make a decision on what i should do. This is a msessage from mandy on her official site.

"Hey there, On a lunch break right now from a writing session with the amazing Rachael Yamagata. Rachael is one of the coolest people I have ever met and I am so lucky to be working with someone this talented. For those of you unfortunate ones who don't know about her, go and check out "Happenstance" .....NOW! Amazing, amazing record and she has another one in the works. Anyway, the record is coming along great... About 15 songs written and recorded with a few more to go. The whole writing process for me has become one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done. So far, I have collaborated with Adam Duritz, Michelle Branch, Lori McKenna (the AMAZING Lori McKenna! - going back east to work with her again this coming week), Chantal Kreviazuk and James Renald. I am getting so psyched to put this record out and hit the road for the first time in a LONG time. The live aspect of this record is gonna be so great to take on the road!

This was left on my talk page, I don't really know what they are asking me to do. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on what to do about this? Thanks for the reply! To the NFL Draft and this. :-D I must admit I don't really know how to go on with this. Admins can't just remove an AfD so I don't know what they want either. Not even sure what to reply to the anon user. Very weird. KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 20:37, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Re: Administrators' rollback et al edit

I think that she will probably win at least one (it's unlikely that the Daydream snub of 1996 will be repeated) for "We Belong Together", and possibly Best Contemporary R&B Album as well. I respectfully decline the featured article medal, as I have only contributed significantly to two FA's, not three. Thanks anyway, though! Also, as you said to me, it's hard for somebody to keep track of every policy and guideline, including those for using the rollback feature. Extraordinary Machine 17:26, 12 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Also, I found this website: http://www.findarticles.com/, while searching for things to add to the Mariah Carey article. As far as I can tell, it's a lower quality (and free) version of ProQuest, and has archives full of print as well as web articles. I was thinking you could use it to help your efforts on the Céline Dion article, but you can do whatever you want with it. Anyway, see you later!
