Recently reviewed content for Armand DiMele edit

I have been trying to no avail to get a friend into Wikipedia. He has been on the radio for 30 years, he is the subject of a fictional novel (that he did not write) and he played a significant part in an emmy nominated documentary, so he's notable. Based on Wikipedia's recommendations I thought my references were solid, but apparently not.

I reference the radio station he is on, plus several write-ups about his show from the NY Times and WSJ. The movie is referenced in IMDB, and I don't know of a more credible source for movie references. The movie is also has a wikipedia entry, where all but two of the cast members have Wikipedia entries [1].

I have been reading documentation on Wikipedia referencing and making changes to the entry, but it seems that I am missing something. Could you please tell me which of the references is not sufficient? Can you recommend more credible source for a movie references? Is a link to the radio show details on the radio station's website not sufficient to prove that he's on the air?

I have re-reviewed the article and I decided I will let it pass to creation. I marked it as a stub so editors won't delete it for a lack of possible information. The subject of the article has found a book of articles from varous publications, which is being mailed to me. It will take a few days to receive and locate online copies of the articles. Can I ping you back once I have sorted everything out? Also, Wikipedia must have a policy for article content that cannot be sourced on the Internet. What is this called, so I can research the rules? James Magnussen edit

Hi John. F. Lewis, sorry I didn't know how else to contact you. My friend made some inappropriate changes to the James Magnussen page following the 100M Mens Olympic Final. James Magnussen is an incredible swimmer and all Australian's should be proud of this young man, he is truly an inspiration. My apologises for my friends attempt at humour again, it was not at all funny. I hope (know) you can quickly restore the page to showcase Mr. Magnussen great achievements.

Hello, the problem is lack of reliable sources, right?

OK, we don't have major INDEPENDENT OF SUBJECT magazines that have articles about this software. Why would they publish such an article? If you look through the "Industry Reviews and Adoption" section, you find several industry-related magazines that reviewed our product. This proves you such a product exists in this industry, and reading the articles in these magazines you can verify the information I provided for Wikipedia article.

This is just a proprietary software product, and yes it does have coverage in magazines related to streaming media software.

Now you can say - this is still not notable enough to be included in Wikipedia. OK, might be. But Wikipedia has articles discussing such proprietary software products, that's the thing. Take a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_streaming_media_systems

All products mentioned there are individual products that have more or less the same coverage in public sources as ours has. Our product has to be in this article, that's for sure! But it can't because you refuse to approve an article.

We just want to be in the Wikipedia articles that discuss these areas, such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_streaming_media_systems Please suggest how this can be acheived.

I just took a look at three random articles on that Media systems. Showing they resemble the same amount references, I will accept it and class it as a stub and lack of sources but I will accept it now John F. Lewis (talk) 00:31, 2 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

declined journal page due to lack of notability edit

Dear John F. Lewis, Thank you for reviewing the page I created on the journal Contributions to the History of Concepts. I am editor of a journal that is struggling to survive in the academic arena of social-sciences and humanities publication industry. It is, however, growing in numbers of submissions and readers and has a very international audience. I created a page for the journal, constructed it along the lines of parallel historical journals, consulted the guidelines on journal notability and included all relevant information, but you still declined it for lack of notability on August 1st. I added a request for the Wikipedia editor to guide me further in case this was not enough, but the only explanation I could find was a comment by Smcg8374 from July 26:

Comment: Is this journal included in a major indexing service? See WP:NJournals for tips on establishing notability. I searched Web of Knowledge for an Impact Factor with no results. 

As you can see in the the talk page on notability of academic journals the use of ISI impact factor as criterion for notability in wikipedia is very questionable. To sum the problem from the point of view of Wikipedia, it will result in having the Wikipedia category of historical journals skewed in favor of US centered general and powerful journals. In other words, it will contradict all that is good in wikipedia and its policies. I will update whatever indices list us, and our journal will continue to be specialized and International, so ISI and its impact factor is not among our goals. Emerging Markets Forum rejection edit

Hi John,

Thank you for taking the time to review http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Emerging_Markets_Forum. I noticed you decided to decline the article, and I am rather confused as to why. As you can see from previous commentary, major improvements were made. The last editor, Stella, informed me she ran out of time checking references and that is why it was not accepted. After that I went to the live-help area and made a few additional changes, and was told it should be OK to submit. Lastly, if you check the articles below, you can see that similar organizations have wikipedia pages, and there are far more sources on my article than those below.

  • I had answered yuor query on the deleted article Talk page: The article uses the we-voice: see the Development cycle and Models2Buy/YouNet sections. The Trusted developers section is full of promotional speech, for example "You will feel comfortable working with them knowing their cost is affordable" and many more. RFO BASIC edit

The article I wrote was nominated for speedy deletion. Despite having been re-edited specifically to address the issues raised (at considerable time and effort expenditure), it was again deleted with the comment that I had simply reposted the article without making any changes. Untrue, and unfair. I worked hard and diligently to ensure that the re-edited article would satisfy wikipedia standards. When I re-posted the article I requested help and, despite being assured that help would quickly arrive, none ever came. I tried to engage on line chat and was unable to get past the captcha stage, despite several attempts at interpreting both the visual and aural presentations. My experience in creating my first wikipedia submission has been a horrendous and utterly frustrating experience, and I am unlikely to participate in this ridiculously complex and entirely unrewarding process ever again. You article was tagged using a AfC maintenance tag. I came across it while dealing with out of name space AfC. I saw your article was in the wrong place so I moved it into the AfC namespace. John, I don't know what an AfC maintenance tag is. I don't know what the phrase "dealing with out of name space AfC" means, or implies. I don't know what AfC stands for, if indeed it stands for anything. And, given that I don't know what AfC is, what it does, or where it resides, my chances of being able to find it are between slim and none. And even if I did find it, what would I do then? Repost it as an article, only to have it 'speedily deleted' by people who clearly haven't read it? No. To continue along this path is clearly a waste of everyone's time.

If you want anything further done with this article, please explain what AfC stands for, post a link whereby I can access it, and state clearly and plainly - while taking great pains to avoid wikipedian jargon - exactly what changes need to be made. The only issue I had was your edits seemed to add a maintenance tag from AfC which tagged it for review despite already being reviewed. John, thank you for your input. I went to the link you provided, and did not find my article. I went to various locations associated with the link you provided, and did not find my article. I left a message requesting assistance, and did not receive a response. This is so very typical of my experience with Wikipedia. Whenever I try to deal with the labyrinth of confusing and misleading information, liberally salted with technical jargon that makes no sense to the newcomer, I find myself overwhelmed. My blood pressure climbs 50 points... and none of this is worth it. Not to me. My best response is to completely avoid wikipedia, and allow you to follow whatever path you desire. Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Are you autoconfirmed?
  5. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

Only use TB when there is a comment/reply. Now going onto the topic, I will watch the page until the point of where I or another editor says that is enough. I recommend you submit Minetest to AfC (Articles for Creation) using the wizard located at WP:WIZ and work on it there and then submit it for review or put it in a sandbox until it is ready. Article should be notable when they are on Wikipedia. An editor (Like in most cases) probably will come along in a day or two, tag it for speedy deletion or take it to AfD. Hi,

I noticed that you closed some AFDs recently. Please remember to add the "old AFD multi" template to the talk page of an article after closing an AFD as "keep" (see WP:AFD/AI if you need more information). Also, if you could please use edit summaries when closing AFDs, it would be very helpful. Hi John and thanks for taking part in AFD! We have an amazing script who helps us close AFDs, remove the template from article and add old-afd within a single click. It also helps in re-listing debates just with a click. The script is located here: User:Mr.Z-man/closeAFD. And if you wan't to do it manually, do not forget to add {{nac}} after your sign. Cheers! I noticed that you redirected Gynemimetophilia to Attraction to transgender people as a result of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gynemimetophilia. Firstly, if you are going to perform a non-admin closure like this, you need to actually close the discussion. You left this one open, which meant that people could still have commented, even though a decision had been made. Secondly, this really isn't a great candidate for non-admin closures. Generally, non-admins should only close an AfD discussion if there is unanimous support to keep, merge, or redirect the article; in this case, there was quite a significant discussion which requires an interpretation of consensus. Hi.

It is nice to see a developer in Wikipedia. I don't know how much is your experience in Wikipedia but I thought I'd give you a tip that saved me once. In Talk:Software release life cycle, you said "it is not notable enough to be used". But when you speak with a veteran editor, it is in your best interest to avoid this sentence, because it is technically wrong. Instead, consider saying "it does not have due weight". In Wikipedia, notability is often taken to mean Wikipedia:Notability, a measure of eligibility of an article's subject for presence on Wikipedia. Due weight however is what you were looking for.

Floorless Coaster GA Review edit

Hi again, thanks for reviewing the article! In response to your comments in the review:

"Also move the Quote in 'Design' to the bottom and expand on the quote." In the Wing Coaster article, the quote is in the same place. Also, the quote can't really be expanded much more other then what is said in the last sentence of the design section, "Aside, from the station, a Floorless Coaster has several inversions[3] similar to B&M's Sitting Coaster's.[7]"

"In addition could anything regarding Safety and Mechanics be moved into their own independent section?" The restraints, moving floor, etc are all part of the design of the the ride. That's why that info is under the design section.

"Captions to the images are not that good." Fixed that.

A tag has been placed on PhpFox, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. It was close enough to the deleted version that I believed it to qualify as a repost. Additionally, it could have been deleted under criterion G12 (copyvio), because it had substantial chunks of content from the original deleted version. Others contributed enough to the original that you weren't the sole copyright holder, so you may not reuse content from it without attribution. Nyttend (talk) 13:29, 22 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I did not actually copy it from the old version, nor did any content added actually go directly into the article. It could be possible for it to be similar but it was not done directly hence fain my opinion it can not actually class as a copyvio. John F. Lewis (talk) 13:36, 22 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
If the content "in the article" is "direct copy from a website (not Wikipedia)" who has copyrights, then it is eligible G12 otherwise in no ways it can be deleted under a "copyvio" if it is a copy from another Wikipedia page. TheSpecialUser TSU 14:19, 22 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Articles for Creation is desperately short of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors, in reviewing submissions in the pending submissions queue. Currently there are 2822 submissions waiting to be reviewed and many help requests at our Help Desk.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog. You might wish to add {{AFC status}} or {{AfC Defcon}} to your userpage, which will alert you to the number of open submissions.
