My talk page changes

I think this may just be a misunderstanding, so let me try to explain my reasoning better. I'm not implying that you are a linkspammer at all. I just replaced all instances of he word with its acronym form so it won't be picked up by the search engines. The only reason it's mentioned anywhere on Wikipedia is because that website's workers decided to bring ithere and try to link it everywhere, and make an issue of it such that it was discussed. Now that's all over, I figure it's safe to find-and-replace all the words. I don't mean to say that any of the people who said it are spammers, I did myself. As for breaking a link: if you are talking about User:Uriah923/ON, that was a silly oversight of my using the find-and-replace and a redirect was created. If you mean the link to the off-wiki website, that was unavoidable. The problems with that website have caused it to be placed on the spam blacklist, I could not have made my edit go through without removing the link. I thought about it and decided replacing the domain name with "ON" was best because 1) it breaks the link so that editing is possible, while 2) anyone reading it who conciously wants to follow the link can still look at it and visit the website by retyping the domain name, since the rest of the URL remains. I understand that editing others' comments is bad form, but I hope this satisfies your concerns. Tell if not. :-) Dmcdevit·t 21:15, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Joe, I recall you some time ago on Talk:West Bank supporting the existence of a separate article on the West Bank as well as the one on the Palestinian territories. There is currently a debate going on as to whether there should indeed be an article on the Palestinian territories as territories, or whether it should focus on the use of the term Palestinian territories, and if the former, what it should be called. Russia vs Soviet Union

Thanks for the copyediting you did on the Bill Haywood article... I really need someone looking at that article besides myself! I noticed you changed Russia to Soviet Union in a couple places. I had actually changed them from Soviet Union to Russia originally, because I believe that at the time Haywood went there, it was still Russia. Haywood went there in 1921, and according to the Soviet Union article, "the Soviet Union was a socialist state that existed from 1922 — 1991". Of course, he wasn't there long before the Soviet Union officially came into being, but that was my motivation.

So, having said that... do you still think it should be Soviet Union? It matters little to me either way, I just want to get the article accurate. --JerryOrr 11:56, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

You are correct. If he fled in '21, Russia is more correct on where he fled to. Probably should be accompanied by an HTML comment pointing out that it wasn't the Soviet Union until '22. I had thought it was '20, and didn't check. - Jmabel | Talk 15:49, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Famine and distribution

Hi, just noting the changes in the famine article about the possible ineffectuality of agricultural technology against particular types of famine. I had originally removed the distribution part, as I thought that arguably all (or at least most) famines fall under this umbrella. If a greater yield can be acheived from the available land in troubled areas, then surely this would most likely help in avoiding the problem of poor distribution? Also, I admit that specific outcomes from most wars may make agricultural technological advances not effective, but do you think that "deliberate political intervention" is a little vague? It may be vague, but it is very relevant. And you are correct that "all (or at least most) famines fall under this umbrella". Often, though, "deliberate political intervention" is the primary cause of the famine. To pick an example that is not recent enough to push too many immediate political buttons, consider the famine in Ukraine under Stalin (the Holodomor): Ukraine had a major agricultural surplus; the famine was caused by the deliberate confiscation of that surplus and more. And this was not wartime.

Feel free to try other wordings; I'm not wedded to the wording, I'm just trying to make the point that no amount of improved yield can do anything about something like this. ~- Jmabel | Talk 03:21, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Renaming article Jew to plural

Hi:

In looking back over the discussion at Talk:Jew I noticed that you had previously written about using the plural form "Jews" (or "Jewish people") for the article title. Someone recently added a poll on possible name change. Please take a look. I'm in support of the move for the sake of consistency with other "group" names, and have attempted to provide examples from List of ethnic groups; some have come out strongly against it. Janjua page

I have seen that you have warned user 202.83.173.117 on the 18th March for his behaviour. He is now attempting to damage this page also which has fully referenced sources for it's info regarding the Tanoli descendancy. I have added the reference of them being Janjua in origin and infact have also referenced points from reputable sources as well as proivding an independent internet link of the Tanoli dynasty's ruling chiefs, which he has not only deleted but also removed their reference from the Tanoli page itself also. If he has counter evidence, I more than welcome it, but I warned him a while ago for the Tanoli page deletion and now he is doing it to the Janjua page.

Other Pashtun editors are clearly in agreement with me that they are NOT pashtun too. Indalecio Prieto Page - translating e.g Julián Besteiro Fernández's name

I think that there is no need to modify Spanish personal names in English articles about Spain and Spanish speaking countries. It can only create confusion. I can't see any problem with writing those name, it still the very familiar alphabet. I may be wrong though.

Romania in the Middle Ages

Hey Jmabel, thanks for pointing that out, and sorry if I caused you any inconvenience. I reverted Greier's edit because s/he seemed to be removing quite a lot of material from the article, and because the text being removed was properly wikilinked and formatted, suggesting that this was not a removal of simple vandalism. However, s/he reverted me immediately after that, using an edit summary pointing out the copyright violation, so the problem was soon fixed. I'll do my best to prevent things like this from happening again, but I guess the lesson here is that we should always use edit summaries. Cheers, Tangotango 07:29, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I deleted it, and also protected it from recreation. The article in question was S.M.M.O.G (also created at similar titles with the full stops in different places). The text read:
