Prove it edit

WP:RS - please - it is not a horror movie JarrahTree 13:58, 1 June 2017 (UTC) - Hello, In that case, Categories "British horror films" and "Supernatural horror films" are wrong. I apologize. (Jkrn111 (talk) 14:12, 1 June 2017 (UTC))Reply

Dont to be too quick to apologise - the challenge I am offering you is - is there a WP:RS or more than one that actually determines that the movie is in fact adequately termed 'horror' ? In the days of video stores, maybe some poor bored clerk put it in horror, or - if someone got freaked out by out it, and maybe thought it was not a psychological thriller .. for me the use of Vienna. Keith Jarret and Art Garfunkel was not horror but psych thriller perhaps... Maybe there is a lot more to categories than are at first sight JarrahTree 14:40, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

unclassified vs unclassifiable edit

Hi Jkrn,

A lot of the langs you added to the family list as "unclassified" are actually "unclassifiable" per Glottolist. By that they mean that the lang is extinct and not enough was recorded to ever classify it -- perhaps some words or names might resemble other languages, but we can't tell if they're loans, or none of the words look like anything else, but w more data we might've discovered regular sound correspondences (as recently with the reclassification of Bijago, once a better look was taken), or maybe all we have is an observation that those people over there used to speak differently than we do -- that is, that the language is unattested. But I think by "unclassified" linguists usually mean something rather different -- there's no consensus over how to classify it for some reason, such as most of the vocab and morphology appearing to belong in one family, but with some divergent core vocabulary, or it's been classified but the evidence is weak, poorly analyzed, or has never been published, or there are competing "classifications", none of which are convincing, etc., but, with further investigation, it should be possible to classify it. — kwami (talk) 05:17, 8 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Macro-Mayan edit

I don't think it is a good idea to categorize language articles with membership in proposed families that do not yet have broad support in the linguistic community. I appreciate your doing some work on categories but you really need to slow down and focus on an area you're familiar with. There are often reasons for stuff that aren't obvious to a non-specialist. Not everyone who has ever produced a paper on Basque is a vasconist, even though some sure fancy themselves vasconists. Akerbeltz (talk) 08:58, 25 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

We just went through this. You must nominate categories for renaming at WP:CFD. You can not unilaterally decide for these categories to be renamed, and especially not in your out-of-process procedure of creating new categories and emptying the old ones. xplicit 23:51, 14 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Art films edit

Hey there. I'd like to recommend that you pause a bit and only classify films which have been described by reliable sources as being art films. From art film: "An art film is typically a serious, independent film, aimed at a niche market rather than a mass market audience". You are currently classifying some mass-market Icelandic films as being art films, when that doesn't seem to fit. If the article itself doesn't mention things belonging to a category, the article should really not be categorized as such. Thank you :) – Þjarkur (talk) 22:30, 10 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

I do not agree. Those were art films. Both. Could you please add some art films into Category:Icelandic art films ? It is empty now. Thanks. (Jkrn111 (talk) 01:25, 11 March 2019 (UTC))Reply
Hi. Please do not add this category to ALL films associated with an individual director, regardless if that director is noted for this genre. Each and every individual film must have reliable sources to confirm this. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 09:24, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Since you don't have a reliable source classifying them as art films, your categorizations are original research. (Incorrect original research, at that). Please do take better care and only categorize things if the text in the article specifically mentions them as being such, categories also need to have a citation. Friðrik mainly made experimental films early on in his career. – Þjarkur (talk) 09:58, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hello, Look at the List of directors associated with art film. For example Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, J. L. Mankiewicz, Vincente Minnelli and Howard Hawks (they all have references). Are their films for niche audience ? Of Course, No. It is quite easy to recognize art film, i think. (Jkrn111 (talk) 11:09, 11 March 2019 (UTC)).Reply
It's not Category:List of Icelandic films directed by someone who has made experimental films, directors have careers spanning decades and can make multiple kinds of movies. "It is quite easy to recognize art film" is original research. When categorizing, please remember to also insert a citation in the article itself. Thank you. – Þjarkur (talk) 11:19, 11 March 2019 (UTC) For Example, film "Pastoral: To Die in the Country" by idiosyncratic filmmaker Shūji Terayama was deleted (from cat. Japanaese art films) I wrote "In a 2011 case for the film's release into The Criterion Collection, Robert Nishimura lauded Pastoral: To Die in the Country as "an important film by an important filmmaker". He cited its "effortless phantasmagorical freedom" and referred to the work as "so unique and spellbinding that it transcends all classification." Is it not enough ? And there are many similar cases in my work. (Jkrn111 (talk) 11:41, 11 March 2019 (UTC))Reply

source/authority edit

You have recently changed more language articles and categories than people have breakfast in a year - you need to offer a source/claim of authority, otherwise there is no knowing why or how you are making the changes. I would suggest a speedy reply and adequate WP:RS for others to see otherwise, the process of disruptive editing looms, and ultimately blocking, if you cannot verify why and how your changes are substantiated. In anticipation of a WP:AGF and clear reply, thanks for your help. JarrahTree 06:18, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, 1) I create categories exclusively with the same name as existing "language group (family)" articles on English Wikipedia. For example I created Category:Kanyara languages after existing article "Kanyara languages". Is it forbidden ? I did not know that. 2) For example Category:Galgadungic languages differed from main article "Kalkatungic languages", so i created a new category with proper name "Kalkatungic". I made many categories this way before (i think more than one hundred) and that was ok for admins. I have done about 7000 changes (almost everything is categorization). I am confused now, could You please help ? (Jkrn111 (talk) 09:19, 31 March 2020 (UTC)).Reply

You are not saying anything about the source of the information - it simply does not come out of the ether - there has to be something to establish there is something that can verify WP:V JarrahTree 09:23, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

I dont understand, therefore I decided to stop editing Wikipedia and I will just read it. (Jkrn111 (talk) 09:34, 31 March 2020 (UTC)).Reply

Jkrn asked me to chime in. I don't see the problem either. Categories are simply a navigation device -- it doesn't matter what we call them, any more than templates or image files. We could give them binary numbers in order of creation, if that wouldn't be inconvenient for editors to use. What do RS's have to do with them?
Now if Jkrn were moving them to inconvenient or unintuitive names (like binary numbers), that would be disruptive. And it may be inconvenient to have so many nested sub-categories, rather than more articles in fewer higher-level categories. But that's POV philosophy of use, and has nothing to do with sources. If the name of an article that Jkrn has used is bad, then the article needs to be moved, but that's not Jkrn's doing.
Skimming WP:CAT, the only thing I see is, Particularly for technical subjects, use words and phrases which exist in reliable sources, so that those sources may be used to support inclusion of articles. But he's taking the names directly from the articles, so they should already be supported per the requirements of WP:TITLE, and category use is secondary. And the language articles being included are those already listed in the family articles, so there's no question as to which they should be (though of course you could always put a hat note at the top of a cat saying we're following one list or another, since no matter which source we follow, some other source will disagree with it).
I've created or moved hundreds of categories, and although ppl have sometimes reverted me or moved them to something else, AFAICR no-one's ever said anything about RS's. — kwami (talk) 12:24, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

It is less to do with RS, and more V - there are considerable changes which have no sense of where or how any clarification can be made, I find that extraordinarily frustrating, specially when there are so few editors with either the capacity or enthusiasm to help out in clarifying or verifying the considerable volume of changes. sad. JarrahTree 12:42, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Jkrn, I think it's reasonable for Jarrah to ask you to consult others on mass changes (though the threat of a block seems a bit much for first contact). I'm sure the two of you could work something out. Maybe just the two of you, if there aren't enough people interested for a formal discussion to be productive. E.g., 'I plan on adjusting cat X to match the hierarchy in article Y, any objections?' or s.t. like that. Personally, I find it inconvenient for navigation to have layer after layer of nested cats, each with only a few article, but it wasn't important enough to me for me to say anything to you. — kwami (talk) 13:46, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

September 2023 edit

Before adding a category to an article, as you did to Hope Sandoval, please make sure that the subject of the article really belongs in the category that you specified according to Wikipedia's categorization guidelines. The category being added must already exist, and must be supported by the article's verifiable content. Categories may be removed if they are deemed incorrect for the subject matter. Thank you. Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Breweries in Thailand edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Breweries in Thailand indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. plicit 12:44, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
