Knights of Columbus
Hi! Thanks for voting for the Knights of Columbus on the Catholic Collaboration page! I know that it is not the CCW article for a few weeks, but right now it is up for FAC so if you could see your way over there early that would be great. Joseph Doria.
I can't find anyone in the online database at www.apo.org with the last name of Doria. I also looked through the "D"s. for Omicron Sigma and even searched for those at Omicron Sigma with the first name Joseph.
Having said that, the database while fairly complete for recent times, lacks a large number of individuals once you get farther back. (Frank Reed and Herbert G. Horton for example. :) I do see some individuals from the 1960s at Omicron Sigma though.

- My Father (James Miller '68) was a member at SPC and later an advisor when the chapter was briefly reactivated. He and Joe Doria were members of the chapter at St. Peter's together. My recollection may be wrong about the chapter involved. I don't know the active dates of the 2 chapters at St. Peter's. They may have both have been members of Pi Tau, but I will check with my father when I can. Jim Miller 22:27, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Suggestion for your user page (and anywhere else you may have a need for it)
Hiya, I was just looking though recent changes and came across this edit to your user page so I thought I'd share a tip that you may find usefull. If you changed the code to look like the following:

it will achieve the effect your after. It's pretty much a way of telling the browser "I want the next line to be on it's own and DON'T want it shared with anything above it". An alternative that gets the same results is <br clear="all" />. I use this on my user page to declutter sections - especially with the amount of templates that would overlap otherwise - and to organise my userboxes at the bottom. It's merely a cosmetical thing in most cases, but I think you'll find it useful. Anyway, keep up the good work and happy editing, TheJC TalkContributions 03:04, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

NJ town article assessments
Chris, I saw you changed the assessment for Allentown, New Jersey to C class. I wanted to go through and assess all the articles about towns that were in the backlog of NJ unassessed articles. I rated a large number of articles as B, but I agree with your change, and was hoping to come up with something consistant. Do you think all the automated articles should be C class if they have not been further improved? I also have been rating municipalities as Mid importance, and unicorporated areas as Low.

- Jim, IMO, I think that articles that have not been improved from the automated bot information should either be stub-class (if short for a CDP for example) or start-class if it contains the usual municipality information. Fortunately, WP:NJ members like User:Alansohn have been adding details to nearly all of these articles, so there are few that are in that category. Many are now either start-class or C-class. B-Class articles should be well referenced and have broad topical coverage. Also, at least one photo, IMO. As for importance, low-importance is for things that are only of ancillary concern to WP:NJ. Examples include Annie's Road and Evil Clown of Middletown. IMO, all communities should be mid-importance, except for major cities, which should be high-importance. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 14:15, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Doctor Who poem quote - Houston, we have a problem
I was thinking about how best to include the poem reference, so I decided to look at the citation for the poem's inclusion a bit closer. You might want to do so as well, since it appears that anyone can sign up for a TV.com account (I signed up as user BlatantExample in less than three minutes); I almost added a mostly spitballed reference comparing Donna to the Virgin Mary and the Doctor's severed hand being in reality the invisible hand that Adam Smith refers to in The Wealth of Nations. I only didn't because I don't need to vandalize another website to point out its weaknesses here. With respect to U-Mos, we haven't the foggiest as to who added the reference, but I am willing to lay pretty good odds that it wasn't the good folk at BBC - if it had, it would have been a part of the press release, or deserving of a mention in Doctor Who Confidential. Apollo Energy Systems - Electrosport
Finding information about small companies from that era is difficult. The "modern" electronic databases often provide little help. In some cases it is possible to find one or two newspaper or magazine articles. Sometimes obscure sources may provide insight (such as the Caltech interview of Victor Wouk[1] that has some history about other battery companies during that period) or an enthusiast's page, such about the Sonotone Company[2]. I don't have information about Apollo Energy Systems. The Electrosport had a printed sales brochures and Motor Trend did an article about the car, but finding anything about the Electric Fuel Propulsion Corporation itself has not been fruitful so far. Nevertheless, I will contribute to the Apollo Energy article whenever I run across something their origins! — CZmarlin (talk) 05:23, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

- thanks for the help cleaning up the RfC link (to make it actually work) and the outside comment on the discussion page. my next question is, do you suggest that i create another RfC? the reason i ask is because my original RfC was about whether the anonymous blog should be a source, and after multiple outside editors came and said that it shouldn't be, the source was simply moved to an external link by the same editor who removed my RfC. i felt that if the RfC stayed up, outside editors could have clarified that this link should not be considered encyclopedic. but now, since the RfC is gone, when i try to remove the link from the article, my edit is reverted as 'vandalism.' should i start another RfC, the same as before, except now change the word "source" to "external link" so that i am not accused of vandalism? or any other advice? thanks. I read the terms and while I understand the potential of conflict of interest which you noted, JCTransit.com is a free website which fills a large gap of missing public transportation info for jersey city residents. The site is a free directory which offers unique info and tools to aide residents in navigating jersey city's fragmented transit system. I saw your assessment of Wyckoff, New Jersey, and "start" seems a tad low. What guidelines are you using as part of these assessments. I'd like to improve these articles and we should have some benchmarks with links to sample Stub/Start/C/B/GA/A/FA articles for the benefit of all those editing and assessing articles. - Alan, I agree. A little farther up my talk page is a conversation I had with User:ChrisRuvolo about this recently. Since Wycoff had no history section, no photographs, and only a few expansions beyond the automated information (schools was a good section) I rated it as Start. I have done all the unassessed towns Starting with A and B this way, and was just looking at the end of the last unassessed bot log when I looked at this one. You may also see that MelonBot is going through all of our templates making changes. I asked HappyMelon to update our project banner to the WPBannerMeta standard. - Actually, it turns out that mine isn't actually centered - it's right justified in the left column of a two column table. Since you aren't using the columns to link talk pages like WPNJ, you don't have the extra padding provided by the empty column. Centering was a lucky matter of column size. For complete transparency, I took a lot of the code from {{WPVG Sidebar}} to begin with. The code in the portal template dosn't allow for it to be centered, and that discussion seems to advocate taking the code and modifying it. - I tossed that back and forth for a while. I had it collapsed for most of the time I edited it (which was really a backwards way to do things! type, preview, show, repeat). Is there an easy way, without changing the source, that I can force the Current Issue section of that page to stay expanded, while leaving the collapsed state as the default for everything else? | The Reboot of Wikiproject New Jersey has certainly stirred up some new activity at the project. Discussion on several improvements and new initiatives have been going on at the talk page. There has been an involved discussion regarding our 92 unassessed articles, especially those on municipalities. The current goal is to review and assess all 566 New Jersey muncipality articles by September 30. A suggestion has been made to intiate Wikipedia Takes New Jersey to begin clearing the large backlog of articles needing photos. Let's all grab our cameras and head out into the vast wilds of the Garden State. Town Halls, High Schools, Historic Places - every article deserves a picture. |

| The redesign has been well received. There are still some things left to do. This newsletter was one big check mark off the list. Hopefully this can be continued on a regular basis. There are literally thousands of articles in Category:New Jersey that have not been tagged as part of the project, and stub sorting hasn't been run in 10 months. We will need to identify some friendly bot operators to help with these projects. An outreach department (which includes the newsletter) needs to be formalized. Creating an invitation template for easy placement on userpages will also be part of that effort.
There are lots of best practices described at the WikiProject Council with ideas of how to make our project more responsive, welcoming, active, and effective. Task forces? Peer review? Other ideas welcome! |

- It's not a question of whether or not the information is true, but whether or not it can be referenced to reliable sources. If you can show a newspaper or magazine article, or another published source where someone has made claims about his assosciations with those groups, it can be added. Hudson County border
Djflem, I removed the incorrect description of the Hackensack River being a border of Hudson County because according to the article on the river, it ends between Jersey City and Kearny. The Hackensack never enters Essex County before joining the Newark Bay, and cannot be a border of Hudson County. As the article about it says, the border between Secaucus in Hudson County and the Bergen County Meadowlands towns is the Hackensack River. It really is! Reference is cited. This is easy to check. Good luck!Djflem (talk) 19:40, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
A CU needs help
Hey Jim,
I just talked to some fine CU folks in San Antonio. They'd like to get an article about their CU onto wikipedia, but have made some missteps, and now have their entire CU's IP address blocked from editing. Which is way out of line from my POV. It's not like they are trying to spam wikipedia or be malicious, they are making honest mistakes in their attempts. I've given them some recommendations how to get out of jail, but I don't know who I could go to for unblocking their CU's IP. Do you know any CU-friendly admins who could do something about that? - Thanks for getting back to me! Great news: Her account is now unblocked. I told her she may as well start a new account instead of trying to have her old account renamed via WP:CHU. I'm not sure if that means the CU's IP is now unblocked too, or what the next step is to do that. I've told her about you; she definitely would like input on the CU's article so that it passes muster. I told her what I could about third-party sources, no original research, etc. Thanks for all your help, I'm sure she will appreciate additional help too! Firstmark Credit Union is Live!
I'm not sure how it's live because I wasn't the one that moved it from my sandbox, but I was planning to do it today anyway. Any idea as to how that would have happened? My plan now is to leave the page alone and see what, if anything, is said about it. Thank you again for your assistance. NJ Gov Shutdown FAC
Shame that the article didn't get promoted during the FAC. However, take a look at the changes that were made to the article because of its nomination. I think this article really benefited from being nominated as its quality improved. There wasn't this much activity surrounding the article since it was brought up to good article status last year. NJRHP
I noticed your well-documented and well-implemented addition of New Jersey Register of Historic Places information to Clark Thread Company Historic District article. Nicely done and footnoted. I am not sure it adds much in this case though, because the NRHP listing supercedes the NJ listing, but it is okay by me.
The NJ source document for Hudson County that you provide does provide other info. Scrolling through it, i find most items are where there is both a NJ listing (SR = state register) and a NRHP listing (NR), or where there is a "SHPO opinion" which I assume means recommend not listing. However there may be places where a place is NJ-listed but not NRHP-listed. Loew's Theatre on page 8 (apparently in Jersey City?) is one. There was apparently an owner objection on that one. I assume New Jersey is the same as New York State, in this: that a historic place can be nominated by anyone, and the State may recognize it on its register, but if the owner objects it will not be NRHP-listed.
Anyhow, if you would like to do articles on the ones that are only New Jersey-listed, I would be glad to help. These would not fall under WikiProject NRHP but would fall under worldwide WikiProject Historic sites (wp:HSITES), which has a general historic sites infobox available similar to the NRHP infobox. - Thanks for the kudos. NJ does operate the same as you state NY does - owners may object to the NHRP listing, but not to the state listing. SHPO refers to a state issued opinion involving funding eligibility. The definitions of the different designations can be found here.
- I obviously need to expand the New Jersey Register of Historic Places article since it doesn't mention the state designated, but not federal, sites at all. This, of course, will lead me to the need to create NJRHP categories. At least the existence of the hsites infobox will keep me from having to dust off my template skills (mostly copy and paste!) for a NJHRP infobox. Yikes!
- Still some things to do with HSITES and template:Designation (looks like California got the color the NJ WikiProject uses from the state flag). I will probably finish adding the info to at least the Hudson County NRHP articles, and then take a look at the infobox for adding the information to the Loew's Jersey Theatre article. - Okay, good, and i did mainly mean kudoes. There are various ones with "COE" or with "DOE" indicated, i don't know what that means. Abbreviations for different NRHP statuses are listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#NRHP codes, including one which mentions DOE also but i still don't know what it means. Oh, DOE and COE for New Jersey defined here at this NJ historic preservation office page. Determination of Eligibility and Certificate of Eligibility explained. More SR-listed but not NRHP-listed from Hudson County document:
- page 10, the Staten Island Ferry Route and Terminal Sites is SR listed but not NRHP.
- page 10, a U.S. Post Office
- page 13, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York Railroad Company Portal Bridge, (owner objection vs. NR listing)

- Further, the NRIS database has info about places like Loew's Jersey Theater in Jersey City. You can get a cut-and-paste ready NRHP infobox for it by searching on "Loew" and "NJ" and checking the box for "Search for properties that have been delisted?" at Elkman's NRHP infobox generator. That has info useful for a historic sites infobox, but since the place was never NRHP listed the NRHP infobox itself should not actually be used. And some of the info put into the NRHP infobox is misleading for non-NRHP-listed places. doncram (talk) 05:35, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Proposed compromise aimed at consensus at WP:NJ
Hi, JimMillerJr. As you may remember, way back in August I started a thread at WikiProject New Jersey to discuss the "Federal, state, and county representation" subsections in New Jersey municipality articles, as User:Nightscream and I had a substantial disagreement on that subject. Approximately two months later, we've hammered out a compromise that we mostly agree upon, and presently I am seeing if there is a consensus for this compromise. I'm leaving this message here not as canvassing, but because you participated in this discussion previously and perhaps would be interested in weighing in on the compromise. | Education Task Force - The conversion of the former WikiProject Education is New Jersey has been completed. New Jersey education-related articles are now supported by the Education task force. The project banner has been updated to fully support the task force with independent importance ratings. No More Comments - A proposal at the Village Pump has resulted in the deprecation of comments subpages. These were usually found at Talk:Article title/Comments and contained little more than assessment notes. These pages were not widely watched, and are often a hidden location for vandalism and BLP violations. WPNJ has 104 articles that used these pages. A complete list of them, along with their contents, can be viewed at Wikipedia:WikiProject New Jersey/Deprecation of comments. It is up to the members of WPNJ to decide what to do with this information. |

| Municipality template compromise; School Districts (almost) complete | New WPNJ members | ||
| Legislative templates in municipal articles - A rather lengthy discussion ran from the end of August until the end of October regarding the use of our legislative district templates in articles about local municipalities. Many WPNJ members commented on the concept, and a proposed compromise seems to have been reached. The templates will require some adjustments to fit the new wording, but should result in more directly relevant sections about County, State, and Federal representation in our articles on cities, towns, villages, townships, and boroughs. Hopefully, more dicussions like this can result is some kind of Manual of Style to bring greater standardization to all of these articles. School District articles now comprehensive - WPNJ Founder Alansohn recently reported that almost all of New Jersey's school districts now have articles - "I have created the article for the last missing (non-vocational) school district in the state." Congrats to Alansohn, who I am sure would love more members at the Education task force to help maintain these articles! |
