Marymount School, Paris edit

Hi. I'm the one who originally tagged the article for speedy deletion, then COI. I read the comments on the talk page, and agreed that the COI was unneeded, and removed it. But I was trying to expand the article, and while looking for info on the school, I found that most of the content was taken from the School's Site. I tagged the page for copyright problems, and reported (though I didn't request speedy deletion again, since I think someone from the school made the page, and would have permission to use the material). Request to move article Frederick Fillmore French incomplete edit

You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page Frederick Fillmore French to a different title - however your proposal is either incomplete or has been contested as being controversial. As a result, it has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete after five days will be removed.

Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:

  1. Added {{move|NewName}} at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
  2. Added a place for discussion at the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved. This can easily be accomplished by adding {{subst:RMtalk|NewName|reason for move}} to the bottom of the page, which will automatically create a discussion section there.
  3. Added {{subst:RMlink|PageName|NewName|reason for move}} to the top of today's section here.

If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. - JPG-GR (talk) 07:01, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Brooklyn Theatre Memorial: A Picture request edit

Forty eight thousand, two hundred fifty seven days ago, as I write this, they went into the ground; named once, but made anonymous by circumstances not of their choosing, nor anyone's choosing. December 9th, 1876, a bitterly cold day, the wind so stiff it was making those few theater walls still standing rock back and forth. They had to rope them up so they wouldn't collapse into Washington street, adding even more dead to the list. June 14, 2009, the emacs calendar figures, will be when 48,400 rolls over. It's a Sunday. Late spring. cobalt blue skies, probably big fluffy cumuli drifting lazily through the air, clean, clear sunlight making emerald the Green-wood grass. That will be a good time to take a picture for me. Or sooner. Or later. They ain't in no hurry, those dead in Battle Hill. They've got nothing but time. Take care, and thanks. Be true to your school edit

Hi, Jim, remember a while back when I commented on and edited what to any outsider looks like an utterly contentless, meaningless string of ascending random integers representing Intermediate Schools (I.S. 2, I.S. 7, I.S. 13 ... or some such sequence) in Staten Island#Education? (See Talk:Staten Island.) When I was doing some miscellaneous cleanup (the colors in a table) tonight, I noticed that some proud, loyal parents, teachers, students or alums had subsequently inserted a couple of P.S.'s into the string and other schools to a list below, so it looks even more of a mess than it was before. I could essay re-editing this myself, but I'd prefer that someone who knows the Island check out what (if anything) is worth keeping or changing. Notability is very much in the eye of the beholder in these things. [For my money, if I had the time or patience, I'd prefer to show some census numbers for educational participation and attainment — as I have in the Bronx#Education — that might tell a non-Islander,and for that matter a Staten Islander, a little something interesting or useful about education in the Borough. The footnotes for the Bronx article will lead eventually to equally good numbers for S.I.]

Of course, I could (and probably will) enter this on the S.I. talk page, but it's not as heavily visited as, say, Talk:Manhattan or Talk:Yankee Stadium, and I wouldn't be too sanguine about getting any timely, useful response. Since you've already commented on this before, you seemed like a likelier source.

Have a good new year. —— Shakescene (talk) 06:15, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Been slightly ill and neglecting my Talk Page. The list, though meaningless to us from other islands, is small, unobtrusive and harmless, seems to me. Any scholastic statistics and other details should go into appropriate neighborhood articles. I don't plan to visit the island again until springtime, when I'll take pictures with a new camera. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:52, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to hear you were/are under the weather. Hope you (will soon) feel better. Now, what you're suggesting for a spring project sounds like part of a plan to me: a picture of I.S. [Ran#], especially if it's somewhat quaint, modernistic, specialized or otherwise unusual, might go some way towards making that list more interesting to mainlanders and other-islanders (heteronesians?) —— Shakescene (talk) 06:53, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Last year I put pix into New Dorp High School and a few others. Any new ones will not go in the SI article but more locallized ones. Slowly coming to cough less. Jim.henderson (talk) 04:31, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Folding bikes edit

Hi Jim: We'll have to get together for dinner again. I'm getting more serious about folding bikes now that there's more daylight. I hate to invest a ton of money. I'm considering this bike. Do you think it would meet my needs since I'm "big and tall." Thanks! Americasroof (talk) 17:24, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sure, Roger. Dinner anytime, but better yet an afternoon bike ride, most any weekend except the coming one when I'll be in Pittsburgh, or do it on one of my weekdays off. If you've got no bike you can test ride my Brompton Bicycle, with the seat tube extender adjustable for people up to 6'6" while I ride my big bike, or I can invite my friend Ron in Jersey City and invite him to bring his Dahon. You might want to delay your purchase until the Manhattan Folding Festival eight weeks from now, where you can test ride (and test fold) several different models. That's where I decided on Brompton last year. I also know people who love their Bike Friday and wll let you take a ride. Funny thing, I've got a better picture than the Downtube corporate Web site shows, with a happy user posing with their product on the Park Avenue Viaduct last August. I also ought to put the Folding Festival link into Cycling in New York City or Folding Bicycle or something. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:20, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much. You were very helpful. When it gets warmer (and the days are longer) we'll have to hook up. The whole incentive for me is photographing NHS buildings. I can only do it before or after work. This time I will not to wait a year or two.Americasroof (talk) 15:59, 16 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Photos for List of New York City Subway stations edit

I wonder if you're up for a challenge. The challenge, if you accept it, is: select pictures for List of New York City Subway stations. It would be great if that turned into a featured list. The selected pictures (of your own and others, in existing articles) should be varied and showcase the New York City Subway system. Examples of similar featured lists include List of London Underground stations, List of Bay Area Rapid Transit stations and List of Oslo T-bane stations. You probably have better artistic selection than I do. So... Hope you can help! Tinlinkin (talk) 10:28, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks; I dislike the London article for its arrangement of pictures. It cannot, far as I see, be arranged well, because it just isn't the kind of list article for which every item, or even a wide sample of them, should have a picture. Necessarily, it becomes crowded, even cluttered. One, two, or perhaps three pix can suit such an article. I gave the New York station list article one pic by a better photographer than me, and the terminal article another, and will be on the lookout for one or two other pix suitable for the purpose. Jim.henderson (talk) 19:54, 6 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I don't blame you, selecting a few representative pictures would be best. OTOH, New York's subway system does have some of the most varied architecture in the world. The London layout seems to be predominant for the featured lists I have seen, though (before the recent additions to that list, anyway). Perhaps when the NYCS stations list is up for featured list review, we'll see if the conservative approach is suitable. (I doubt it will be.) Tinlinkin (talk) 04:20, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
We'll see. I take no interest in upgrading a mediocre article to the point that it can join the fraction of a percent that get formal recognition, on the theory that the effort is better spent upgrading the far greater number of horrible articles to the point of mediocrity. Most station are not very interesting to see, with sometimes most of the stations on a line fitting into one, two or three designs, and my pictures mostly do little to bring out the differences that do exist among them. But if someone applies more talent, or better applies more industry to the question, another answer may come out. Me, this afternoon I spent five hours bicycling through western and north central Queens, taking mostly non subway pictures (churches, firehouses, NRHP, etc) that will go into my three weeks backlog, which will take priority over this kind of job. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:42, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

You beat me again edit

I see you've got your images of Oceanside (LIRR station) and Island Park (LIRR station) up before I could, not to mention East Rockaway (LIRR station) which I wasn't planning on. Hey, less work for me, but I still want to capture Island Park's station house. ----DanTD (talk) 22:43, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for adjusting the subcats of the Queens subway stations and otherwise improving the usefulness and accessibility of my pix. My main targets for that trip were the Sage Presbyterian Church in Far Rockaway and whatever might turn up in Long Beach, but I planned my return home through mainland Long Island, and some of the train stations along the way came out pretty well. Due to a flat tire in Manhattan before starting, it got to be late in Lynbrook or even in Oceanside.
Low Sun can make lovely results if you take time to find the best angles but low Sun also made me rush to pedal back to Queens before dusk so mostly I didn't have time to take proper advantage. Heck, I even failed to hunt up a good angle for the Reynolds Channel road bridge, and got something rather uninspiring. I'll resume discussing railchasing in the next section, but maybe when you get to New York a few of us Wikirailfans can get together for a meal or something.

How was Thursday's haul edit

So, since we discussed it, Thursday has passed, and what did you get?3 1/2 years of Mitch32 22:50, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alas as mentioned above I've got a three weeks backlog; I'm just starting examining my pix from the Five Boro Bike Tour of three weeks ago and after that there's the ones from my later little Elmhurst to Rego Park ride. Last Wednesday (day changed due to a mixup about a colleague's work schedule) was a longer ride; 55 km, 33 miles of indirect route from Gravesend to Jamaica. Got some maybe okay stuff of Coney Island Complex despite it all being fenced off and a jittery worker warned me out of an apparently public area by Coney Island Creek. Nice pedalling through Kingsborough Community College; hope some of the pix there came out well. Found no twin towers or anything like that at the east end of Emmonds Avenue.
Snapped some historic houses (like, 300 years old) and churches in Canarsie and Newlots. The Executive Director of one of the historic houses saw me and came out of his trailer to give me a brief lecture but the Sun was kind of low there and too far south. Really low Sun in Jamaica made difficulties that I probably failed to overcome; I don't expect good things of my shots of the JFK Express but some of the churches might fare better when I dig down to that level.
I'm thinking of biking along the Second River through the Oranges in New Jersey which is also the route of a part of the Morristown rail line mostly devoid of Wikipix. Climb to Summit or whatever distance leaves me time to pedal back to Newark before Sunset. That would be this Wednesday or on the weekend. Jim.henderson (talk) 23:30, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Little Neck (LIRR station); a.k.a.; "Racoon Junction" edit

Do you know of anyone who has ever given the nickname "Racoon Junction" to Little Neck (LIRR station), or does this strictly fall under the WP:CB category? ----DanTD (talk) 13:37, 6 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Never heard of it. Grew up in the 1960s in Manhasset, New York not so close as to make me deny it for sure, but within reasonable range of neighborhood folklore. Teenagers in Manhasset occasionally discussed the Little Neck grade crossing but never, for example, the ones in New Hyde Park and its neighbors because they were out of range of folklore. Today I'm working through picking and processing snaps of Downtown Brooklyn on June 2. Nice stuff on DeKalb Avenue but what's that; six weeks backlog? Dreadful. 'Nother couple months of warm weather will keep the backlog growing or at least not shrinking; then boo-hoo it'll be less time on the bicycle and more at the computer. TXE and Commons edit

Hi Jim

Dave Atkins has recently received this in his discussion page

Commons:File:TXE3Reed Relay.JPG edit

This file was moved to Commons from English Wikipedia, but some description information may have got lost in the process.

As you are noted as the original uploader, or in the history for the file, it would be appreciated if you could help in reconstructing this information.

Thanks for you assistance and keep uploading 'free' media :)

Neither of us know anything about "Commons", but I believe that you do and since you have taken an interest in the TXE article in the past, I thought that you wouldn't mind advising us.

It appears that someone (or a bot?) has copied (rather than moved, as the above note says) the picture of a TXE3 reed from the TXE article to another section of Wikipedia called Commons. There doesn't appear to have been any adverse effect on the TXE article, rather Dave is being asked to do something to the information which has been transferred to the Commons. What is it that he is being asked to do? What problems would arise if he didn't do anything?

Why would anyone copy a picture from an article into the Commons in this way?

Your advice would be appreciated. Mark126 (talk) 10:10, 29 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

All righty; no need for alarm; since we last discussed TXE I have become a photographer and thus a frequent contributor to Wikimedia Commons. wikimedia commons started as the central picture bureau of all Wikimedia projects including Englisn Wikipedia and that's still its main purpose. When patrollers discover good pictures, they move them to Commons because there they will be safer and more easily available to users of different languages. Commons has supplied many good pictures that were originally uploaded in German, French, Russian, Japanese and other languages and that I used in various English language articles.
Moving a picture to Commons does not the slightest harm to the article for which the picture was originally intended. However, the patrollers who do the moving sometimes get overenthusiastic and overroboticised, hence fail to transfer some useful information about the picture. For the picture in question, the result was that it lost categorisation. I repaired that problem a few minutes ago. We can discuss further improvements here in my talk page, or better in the TXE talk page, or best in commons:File talk:TXE3Reed Relay.JPG, the picture's talk page. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:29, 29 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for that Jim. Whoever it was has also created Commons:File:TXE3Reeds.JPG Perhaps you would do whatever needs doing to that one as well? I note that you have said that TXE3Reed Relay was uploaded to en:TXT, but that doesn't seem to have any relevance to the picture. Am I missing something?

I now understand the general rationale of copying a picture to Commons, but why would anyone want to do it with these two pictures? They are not beautiful and would only be of (limited?) technical interest in the appropriate setting, which en:TXT does not seem to be.Mark126 (talk) 16:03, 29 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

On the contrary, Commons had no other picture of a reed relay, an important type even if no longer made in the millions per year for voice circuit switching. It would presumably be useful for illustrating articles in other languages, though I know no other language well enough to write those articles. Commons is not all about beauty; most of my 1700 pix there are of workaday architecture, railway stations and street scenes. TXT? Did I say that? Maybe age has begun to erode my memory.
I think I'll watchlist all your TXE pictures. Most likely only a few will be considered interesting enough for Commons, but it would be help ensure that they are moved correctly if someone thinks them worth moving. Meanwhile, I could create an image category for TXE here in en Wikipedia, making them more easily accessible to other editors interested in technical photos and diagrams. Sometimes we are surprised at the uses other people find for our images. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:04, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK Jim, we'll leave it with you to over-see. Thanks very much for your help. Mark126 (talk) 06:40, 31 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

116th Street edit

I disagree with the approach embodied in your edit here. Are there no 116th Streets of significance in places other than New York City? bd2412 T 08:02, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

My edit? Yes, last month I was bicycling on 116th Street in Ozone Park, Queens and presumably many others exist. However, in the article in question, my edit added a picture without changing the topic of the article. When an article about another notable 116th St appears, I can be the one who makes the necessary adjustment, or another interested editor can handle it sooner. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:56, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I acknowledge that you did not change the topic, but you did replace the disambiguation tag with a New York category. However, I see your point about other articles on other such streets lacking, and I suppose this does not really present an issue until there is one. bd2412 T 16:29, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Turns out, I made a more important error, in not checking the article history before acting. The article was originally a redirect to the 116th Street (Manhattan) article, then someone mistakenly turned into a disambiguator among subway stations on that street, which were later incorporated into the Manhattan article. So, I have reverted my change and that of the other editor, back to the original. When another 116th Street gets an article, this one can become a disam again, but not among subway stations. GPS edit

Jim, I noted some changes you made across GPS pages. I understand your attempt to fix this, but I would like you to consider some issues that arise when it comes to terminology.

"Standalone GPS" is a term used for a type of signal reception. Standalone is not really the proper term for a PND/PNA (personal navigation device) or generically "Dedicated GPS" as one would mean with a handheld garmin or tomtom for example.

Standalone specifically refers to the ability of the GPS device to work using only the GPS satellite signals, which are worldwide accessible and free. This is in contrast to carrier network dependencies such as AGPS whgcih severly limit range (non trivial as many aGPS will work only on 3% to 5% of the globe) vs 100% of the globe fore standalone GPS syterms.

So you have two differentiators: 1) type of device: ie whether the device is multifunction (eg a camea with GPS, a smartphone or phone wiht GPS) vs the dedicated PND GPS devices 2) type of signal use: ie whether it will work with birds alone, "Standalone GPS"; whether it will work only with a carrier signal supplement, AGPS, or whether it will work either way, Standalone and AGPS.Carwon (talk) 16:38, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ah. Thank you. Yes, while researching ways to improve over my autogeotagging camera I found some tangles among the various GPS articles and tried to unsnarl them but was, alas, inattentive to this important distinction. Your additions today to those articles will ensure that unwary editors and readers alike won't make this mistake again. I'll review those articles more closely, later this week and hope you and other alert watchers will be ready to catch any new mistakes I may invent along the way. Accuracies in articles edit

Are you sure you meant accuracies in this edit? -:) Seriously, I agree with your deletion, there is far too much "drive-by" templating. Templates are useful, but are not a substitute for explaining perceived problems on the talk page. SpinningSpark 18:37, 8 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hee-hee, yes I am more careful with writing for the general public than for my fellow editors. Actually in this case I didn't bother to check whether the flag had been casually planted, but was addressing the similarly commonplace question of staleness. The maintenance template was old, and a quick glance at the article and talk page did not make its reason obvious. Rather than search the history for a cured reason I simply deleted it, with the hastily composed notice that you noticed. Most such deletions of stale warnings get no answer.
