vermont template

hi, I see you've been adding the Vermont template to the bottom of all the Vermont towns. The template and all the 251 towns it includes seems a bit unwieldy. Since there is already a towns in Vermont page, I was thinking it might be more useful and usable to link to this page rather than include links to all the towns. I'm sort of new here so I'm not sure what the process is for revising temnplates (wasn't sure if it was a good place to be bold or not) and figured I'd run it by you first. Thoughts? (unsigned question posted by User:Jessamyn)

I was really just being bold myself by adding the template. I had some extra time at work and was going in alphabetical order. I saw it on the page for Burlington but not on other town pages. I didn't know why it was on one but not the others and after having checked the template's dicussion page and finding that there wasn't a guideline as to "when to use the template", I decided that I'd just put it on the rest of the town pages. I kind of prefer the template to just a "See also:" section since I think it gives the page a bit more of a grand and/or official feel. In general, I prefer graphs, charts, templates, and infoboxes over just plain text. These are just my thoughts though.

Also, in order to sign your comments on talk pages and such, please put four tildes (e.g. ~~~~) at the end of your comment. This makes it easier for people know who messages are coming from. Dismas|^(talk) 20:14, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

OMYA link

Actually, that link was already on the page; I only relocated it. I must admit I didn't investigate the geography much, although I did notice the earlier text "most of the town was split off as West Rutland and Proctor". I replaced the external link in the text by a link to OMYA and moved the existing link to External links. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Childlove movement

Hi. You voted to delete pedophilia advocacy on the grounds that it was a "POV fork." However, the supposed original POV cited has, apparently, since been rectified, as User:James James moved the article to Pedophilia advocacy. Maybe you didn't notice..? Or do you consider something else point-of-view? If you do, I would urge you to fix it rather than voting to merge the article with pedophilia, which is long enough already. Deleting the article won't make the movement go away. Keep it, on the other hand, and there will actually be a neutral source for a description of the movement, rather than mere propaganda. // paroxysm (n) 03:03, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Vermont Towns

Not to give you a headache, but I think that Bellow Falls is missing from the 251 list. Should I add it and take us to 252? I bet there's a reason, but I just wanted to make sure, and I really don't want to mess up the list. H0n0r 16:26, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

you know, there is something wrong with that list, I think. Let's make a plan to go over it, checking the names of the towns from an actual list of them. It may be that Vermotn has 251 towns but that the gores don't count and need to be separated. Let's put a note on the talk page of the list of towns and I'll try to look into it (or you can) this weekend. Jessamyn 17:32, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

I checked the list against the one on the Vermont Indicators Online page and it looks like Bellows Falls, though very high profile, is actually a village in the town of Rockingham. Thanks so much for sorting out the long list of towns - I was hoping to find a comprehensive list on the state sites but they all contradict each other, so the rural studies list is a great idea. I liked your version, however there' a technical difficulty inserting the word "town" (city, gore, CDP etc.), also "including" isn't quite right fo families. "There are 6.8% of families living below the poverty line and 10.5% of the population, including 11.9% of those under 19 and 9.1% of over 64s." Regards, Rich Farmbrough 13:08 24 March 2006 (UTC).

Mogan photo?

Hello, I am a Morgan owner and I was wondering, who is the horse in the photo and is it a Morgan? Also, there was a beautiful photo of a Morgan mare and her foal on the Morgan page before, what happened to that one? Cathy Burgess

Hi Cathy -- the original Morgan photo with the foal was removed from Wikipedia (not by me) because there was no source for the image and it couldn't be clear that it was appropriately licensed. The next one, on the black background, was removed because it was promotional material from someone's web site that specifically linked to Morgans for sale which is not an appropriate use of Wikipedia. I would like, very much, to find a better Morgan photo that we could use to illustrate the article, but I'd rather have a not so great photo than have one that is of questionable prvenance. I was wondering if I could update the project page to take out the things that are done? I was looking at Wikiproject Wisconsin and its really organized - I'm not sure I want to take it that far, but I look at the page as it is now and it's overhwelming - what do you think? (I still haven't figure out how to respond to a comment - can you tell?) I have your back. I really thought that they'd gone away but I see I was wrong. I've looked up the names and the only Benson or VT connection are a couple of UVM students, so that makes me feel a little better. I'm seeing this as a growing theme though - that the notable people are the elements most commonly in need of defense. I think that the sections are really interesting, but I'm beginning to wonder if they're worth the hassle? Anyway - I'll post some comments just now - my apologies for waiting so long. A Library Bill of Rights page was just created by a person high in the ALA eschelon. I have made edits to it. In addition I raise, on the talk page, serious concerns that I think should be on the main page that I back up with links from top sources, such as the ALA itself.

As discussed on the ALA talk page, I've gone ahead and asked the Wikipedia community to comment on Safelibraries our edits, so that people who are unrelated to this dispute can help guide you. Well, things are turning ugly at the RFC, with Safelibraries actively threatening lawsuits and screaming of a conspiracy against him. I genuinely feel bad that it came to this. I spent a lot of words thinking that if I was just kind enough, caring enough, and helpful enough, eventually Safelibraries would wind up kicking his bad editing habits, but, then, I always was a naive idealist. I just wish there was something else I could have done that would have succeeding in ending the bad edits while simultaneously not alienating and upsetting Safe.

In any case, the RFC evidence is watertight, and combined with the numerous violations of civility, personal attacks, and legal threats contained in his response, I think it's safe to say his disruption will soon be over. If he continues to edit disruptively after the RFC, the case will be a very straightforward one for the Arbitration Committee and will undoubtedly result in his being barred from editing pages related to his POV. But, let's hold out a little hope even still that he sees the error of his ways and just stops the inappropriate behavior, and that such action won't be necessary. What conspiracy are you talking about? I did not mention one, nor do I have one in mind. Your claim that I do harbor such claims is more of your setting up false arguments about me, then knocking them and me down at the same time. The legal threat pertains to your defamation of character and libel, something wiki policy specifically excludes from the general ban on legal threats, and now that you have writtten this AFTER having read where I specifically pointed this out, I am certain I am now required to report your defamation and libel as instructed on that legal threats page.

Jess, the diff you posted wsa just a spelling correction. Just quickly glancing over his recent edits, nothing jumps out at me as being inappropriate, but I'm just skimming. In general, if he make any edit that you disagree with, without it first being supported by a consensus, you should feel free to revert his edit or otherwise undo it, and then we all talk about it. Civil unions in Vermont town pages

Hi. I live in Boston, but had dinner with a Vermont town clerk on Saturday. She says that civil unions are categorized with marriages in vital statistics, and that in the first two years after enactment many Vermont towns reported greater numbers of civil unons than marriages. I asked her if they report civil unions as marriages in federal census and she said that it is done by the state which includes it. Knowing almost a dozen couples with civil unions I thought it made sense to chage this. I am surely open to additional opinions. I started first in towns and incorporated villages where I knew gay or lesbian couples. It seems a shame to describe their homes as non-family households. 14:02, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

I was there 86-90 back when the computer lab was mac +s and vt100s. I did mostly linguistic/semantics stuff with Weisler and Feinstein, worked at the Farm Center and the motorcycle co-op (when there was one) and helped take the marching band to the St. Pat's parade in DC a few times. Librarian.net spam filter keeps blocking me

Hi Jess, the spam filter at your librarian.net keeps blocking me. I got one error message the first time about spam, and the second time I got this: "Sorry, but your comment has been flagged by the spam filter running on this blog: this might be an error, in which case all apologies. Your comment will be presented to the blog admin who will be able to restore it immediately. You may want to contact the blog admin via e-mail to notify him."

Here is what I tried to add that I can't see how it could trip the spam filter warning (on the page called scrotum!):

"Having only read the NYT first paragraph, I don't see the problem with the book yet. What I object to is the ALA awarding books top honors for 'children's books' when even the authors themselves would not give their own award winning books to their own children due to the inappropriate nature of the content for children."

I'm pretty sure I found one of your comments and approved it after the fact. My spam filter is usually pretty lenient, but a lot of peopel saying "scrotum" seems to have made it touchy. That's funny about your spam filter. Yes, I have an incident to cite. John Green, author of 2006 ALA Printz Award "Looking For Alaska," said, emphasis mine,

1. I'm with Mary. I have no problem with a parent reading my book and saying, "Nah, I don't want my child reading this. That's fine. In fact, if I had a 12-year-old, I might not let them read 'Alaska' for any number of reasons.

2. The book has never been marketed to 12-year-olds. Never. It is packaged like an adult book; it doesn't even say it's published by a kids' book imprint on the cover, and it's never shelved in the children's section of bookstores. It's a book for high-school students. Furthermore, the ALA does not hand it to 12-year-olds or say that it's appropriate for 12-year-olds. As Mary also pointed out, it's for a book that falls within an age range that starts at 12 and ends at 18. In my case, the book is published for kids 14 and up.
