POTD

Hi Jason,

Just to let you know that the Featured Picture Image:8-cell-simple.gif is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on November 9, 2007. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2007-11-09. Sorry about the delay there. After its replacement, it fell off my radar, but better late than never! :) howcheng {chat} 00:30, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Awesome edit

I've been drawing the little hypercube representation for years now, I've never seen it animated. Truly beautiful!

24-cell animation edit

Hi, I just wanted to say, great job with the 24-cell animation! I like it.—Tetracube 04:35, 18 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Tag image? edit

You tag the image on the "Image:Imagename" page, and it seems you've released the rights to the image perfectly as of looking at it now. Awesome work. Sorry if anything I said confused or alarmed you in any way or degree - Wikipedia has to be careful about the licensing of the images it displays. Cheers, Nihiltres 22:11, 18 February 2007 (UTC) (this message duplicated at User talk:Nihiltres)Reply

Tesseract edit

Please take this as just a constructive criticism. The tesseract you created isn't as easy to understand as this one, as yours is rotating in two ways, but this picture is obviously inferior in quality to yours. I wondered if it would be too hard for you to remove the superfluous rotation. Mrug2 18:33, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mrug2. I know what you mean, and I did ask for suggestions on Talk:Tesseract, so thank you. I've posted a response to your message there. — JasonHise 01:54, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier - I've only just seen the new picture. Yes, it's great. Well done - Mrug2 18:24, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

More polychora coming? edit

Do you plan to create and upload similar animations for the 120-cell and 600-cell? If you did, that would be awesome!

Unessesary reflections? edit

Hey Jason, I absolutely love your pretty pictures of 4D stuff. I can't stop staring at them. However, I just noticed that the opaque planes connecting the lines and points of said objects have reflections in them. I was trying to understand the 24-cel, and it was when I looked at the hypercube when I realized there was a lot of relection going on. The reflection no doubt looks cool, but I think this is a case of form inhibiting function, which , as far as I'm concerned, should never happen. If looking cool affects the scientific (or whatever) information one can derive about 4D objects, well, it's simply not a good thing. Could you perhaps make a 24-cel without the reflections just to see what it looks like?

POTD cancellation edit

Hi Jason,

It has come to my attention that your Featured Picture Image:Tesseract.gif no longer appears in the Tesseract article. It seems to me that if it's not good enough for the article of its subject, then it probably shouldn't be a Featured Picture either. Accordingly, I've canceled its POTD appearance and have nominated it to be replaced by one of the other two tesseract animations you have in the article. Please see Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/delist/Image:Tesseract.gif for the discussion. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 23:32, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

What is the purpose of all the reflections in this image? Please reply at Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates#Current_nominations and add any useful info to the image talk page. — BRIAN0918 • 2007-06-05 14:40Z

Zoetrope view request edit

Hi, could you kindly create a zoetrope like view (just a succession of static pictures, displayed in a grid) of the 4d objects? I think it'll help in understanding them. Thanks. --Amit 12:14, 15 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I do not currently have time. They are simple gif images though, so I would not object to anyone extracting frames from them to make such an image. JasonHise 19:26, 15 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank You edit

The images that you have contributed are absolutely mind-blowing. I have essentially been dumbfounded from staring at them for the past hour and a half. Thanks for these contributions... you're making Wikipedia an even more interesting place. - Prezboy1 20:35, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

How? edit

Hey, i really like what you do, but i'm a little confused. I know 3DS max and maya quite well, but I have no clue how you do those pictures. Do you use a plugin of some sorts or do you fake the rotation by applying transformations on your model? Because i'm pretty damn sure these programs only deal with three axies =P (Epgui (talk) 01:39, 5 December 2007 (UTC))Reply

To accomplish this in Maya, I actually set up a MEL script for each cluster that serves as a vertex. The MEL scripts were rather similar, and differed only in what initial x, y, z, and w I associated with them. The rotation and the projection were done completely with code.

16-cell animation commentary edit

Hi. An anonymous user added a funny statement to the 16-cell animation you made, linked at 16-cell#Images. Perhaps you can understand if it makes any sense, remove or correct as needed! Thanks! Tom Ruen (talk) 19:27, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

It is portrayed in a slightly distorted manner: when the convex hull of the 3-dimensional projection is octahedral, the vertices which only have edges on the octahedral shell should draw together, thus flattening the octahedral convex hull, then back apart, and then stop while the convex hull is hexagonal bipyramidal. [1]
I'm of the opinion that this commentary is nonsense, but I'll leave it to Jason to make the final decision.—Tetracube (talk) 19:31, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I see Jason has only one edit[2] since January, so I'll just remove the comment. Tom Ruen (talk) 19:40, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jason. Do you have a file format? Stella (software) uses a modified "OFF" format for 4D, examples at OFF [4] and 4OFF [5]. I've not generated these as output, but could. Tom Ruen (talk) 03:46, 8 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
My importer currently works exclusively with VEF files, though it looks like the two formats have a lot in common. It should not be difficult for me to add OFF support if that is easier to export. JasonHise (talk) 02:24, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately my Stella4D is a jealous god, and only imports 4OFF, won't export its polytopes. I could generate VE data quickly for most of the uniform polychora, any format, but I don't have time to add faces for now. We should also try some of the star polychora, no transparent images of these so far! Tom Ruen (talk) 02:45, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
And maybe you can improve on some of the 3D figures as well? Tom Ruen (talk) 02:52, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Oops... what's happening here? edit

Jason, those are great and iconic images you have been producing. But what is going on with the recent "improvements", apparently signed off by you? Has a vandal compromised your account? The current Image:8-cell.gif is a miserable shadow of its former magnificence. --Epipelagic (talk) 09:10, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Since I obtained the ability to render any shape I can get a VEF file of I did new renders of all 6 polytopes with a new material. I'm sorry to hear you do not like the new version... which aspects of the original did you prefer? JasonHise (talk) 20:28, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well just scroll down here and look at the difference between the thumbnails for the current and original versions. The new version doesn't even work as a gif. You can also see it on my user page, where it now appears as a static and uninteresting image (at least on a Mac using Firefox). --Epipelagic (talk) 09:20, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
The lack of animating is cause by some bug/limitation in the resizing algorithm uses in the wiki engine - SO larger files only animate if sized to the original resolution. I'm unsure how to describe the limitation/failure/bug, but in this case the old file was 625k, and new one 3meg. On the quality, perhaps the old images should be restored if they are different and considered better in ways, and new images uploaded with a separate file name? Tom Ruen (talk) 21:48, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I am willing to do new renders of the shapes... the main thing that is important to me is that all six be consistent (rotation speed, material, lighting, ...) Any feedback on what would improve the images is welcome. JasonHise (talk) 22:35, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Tom that some of the older version should be there as well. Why not retain your new and more sophisticated versions as you want them, but reinstate, under modified names, the older versions which, at smaller sizes, both animate and display more elegantly, particularly the 8-cell? --Epipelagic (talk) 00:07, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
The original versions have been re-uploaded under new names:
5-cell-orig.gif
8-cell-orig.gif
16-cell-orig.gif
24-cell-orig.gif
JasonHise (talk) 05:22, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Great! --Epipelagic (talk) 06:04, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I see this thread which explains quite a bit but I had left a post at Commons:File talk:8-cell.gif concerning the broken animation when resized before seeing this. I wouldn't upload any new versions of animated gifs until this is resolved somehow. I was asked to fix a broken gif on a userpage which led to this.

Hi Jason, I like your Clifford torus animation. Do you think you could do a similar thing for the 4-D Klein bagel? The equations are here: Klein_bottle#4-D_non-intersecting. The parameterization is based on the Flat torus. Cloudswrest (talk) 22:02, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Spin One-Half without pause edit

Hi Jason. Thank you for your animations; I love your work.

Do you have a version of File:Spin One-Half (Slow).gif without the pauses? From the "(Slow)" portion of the filename I assumed that here might be more than one version already uploaded, but I don't see a File:Spin One-Half.gif or File:Spin One-Half (Fast).gif. -- ToE 15:26, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I just wanted to let you know that I've successfully re-timed your gif for my own purpose, and that I wasn't looking to use it on any particular Wiki page. Now I need to think about how to construct a kinetic_sculpture along those lines. Cheers! -- ToE 00:34, 10 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
There is indeed a prior version of this animation here: File:SpinOneHalf.gif. Best of luck with the sculpture, I'd love to see how it comes out! -- JasonHise (talk) 06:52, 14 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
