Westerly (Australian literary magazine) edit

Such a clean talk page; it's a shame to start the mess going all over again :) Your work on referencing at Westerly (Australian literary magazine) is top rate. It shows the article is no longer a mere promotional / vanity piece, but an article on a subject that has achieved recognition from external sources who've recognised their works. I hope I'm not making you feel obligated to immediately find external sources for any articles I'm tagging. I'm even tagging my own works, in the hope to serve as a reminder to myself that I've still got work to do on the sourcing of information even I've contributed. -- Longhair\talk 00:27, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

My email wasn't working until this morning. If you've sent me a recent email, please resend. All is functional again now. -- Longhair\talk 00:41, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I glanced over the article at Western Australia Police earlier while scanning WA content for a lack of sources. The article looks like an attempt at external sourcing has been made, ie, Western Australian Year Book 1974 and Lieutenant-Governor Stirling's Proclamation of the Colony, 18 June 1829 (UK) so I left that article alone :) As I said earlier, I'm not looking for mistakes. I'm looking for articles than could be improved, and there's a lof of them out there. Wikipedia suffers from credibility problems, so the more external references articles contain, the more credible Wikipedia content becomes (one hopes). Also, paranoia isn't healthy you know. It's usually a symptom of the guilty... I'm sure we're all guilty of something at times, but nobody really cares if you mean well :) -- Longhair\talk 01:32, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

The West story edit

It's here.It seems notable enough for the Nullarbor article - I'll ttry to work it in to the text. Graham87 02:01, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm back after the batteries in my cordless headphones decided to conk out - and I had to wait until someone got home to help me. Anyway let me just say I think it's very unfortunate that The West is the only state newspaper in WA. The Age, which would be somewhat more acceptable as a reference, carried a slightly more detailed version of the same article on December 13, and I'll use that as a reference. Graham87 03:37, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Re: the essay at Freshwater Bay, Western Australia: priceless; at least we now know that Christ Church Grammar School uses the local area to find examples for geography classes. And how about all those abbreviations? It seems like that essay was not fit for consumption outside those familiar with Western Australian private schools. Graham87 03:51, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I don't know where discussion of the logo would fit in the Nullarbor Plain article. I can't just plonk it in the history section as it's all about the aboriginal history and European exploration. The cultural significance section is all about crossing the Nullarbor - do you know much about the routes of the old transcontinental flights? It could be wedged in there. The transcontinental flights could be mentioned in the transport section. Graham87 04:05, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Creation of a section like "Significant events" or something would probably be alright. It could also mention Skylab crashing near Balladonia. I'm just looking at articles on Australian disasters at the moment - I'll probably get to it some time today. Graham87 05:56, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Articles on Eucla, Balladonia etc should have some information and links on some of these things - I cleared them up in October just before running off down south, and whacked an infobox down the bottom to link all the towns of the Nullarbor (the SA ones had not yet been written at last check). Explorer edits edit

I wish I could take credit for the articles... my tagging was merely as a result of the 'small' project I took on at Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian history/Exploration. I have been adding explorers to a type of 'to do list' from ADBiography Online. If you are familiar with the level of resources available on a particular explorer, and any online links to resources, please drop them on the talk page of the WP, or my page, or at the relevant expedition in the list. For Dale, we might make a notation in the listing that limited resources are available, so that it will discourage an expedition article.

Javanese music edit

Firstly, i don't know much about the subject to make a specific comment. But generally speaking, can you make the edits yourself? Also, if there is two usages within Javanese (a general usage and musical jargon usage, i understand?) then it probably needs pointing out, even explaining somehow (ie, as appropriate) that there are two meanings. Doesn't sound like a problem that is too hard to fix. --Merbabu 00:40, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Although it doesn't have to stay on this article if we decide to do it some other way, Talk:Corrigin, Western Australia is an example of its use. And cool... I'll see what I can do! Obviously starting with towns, suburbs and LGAs, but I'm awaiting clarification from the other project members as to whether they can strictly speaking be included. I've also got to finish that wheatbelt section one day... Orderinchaos78 09:07, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Where to put Schools?????? edit

G'day again SatuSuro. I've just tweaked Mosman Park and noticed it had no mention of schools. Past tense, it's got two now, in the (MP, WA) page, same as Peppy Grove. BUUUUT, I see Victoria Park has its schools in the LGA page. Just to start things off, I vote for (**, WA), but if anybody has good reason to go for the LGA page I'll be happy. We do need to standardise this.  Gordon | Talk, 11:54, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry. I was unclear: not talking about the info-boxes, but which page -- either the LGA page (Shire/Town/City of **) or the locality (**, Western Australia) page.  Gordon | Talk, 12:03, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'd say they should always go in the suburb article. If the school sits on a boundary or very close to one and is major (eg Presbyterian Ladies College or the like), the article for the neighbouring suburb probably should make mention of it. I know I've done that with a couple in that area but I forget which. Orderinchaos78 12:01, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for that I do hope it sorts it out! SatuSuro 12:05, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sacred site edit

Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_holy_cities - so List_of_holy_cities is now a deadlink, to which Sacred site redirects. I'm doing a lot of cleanup; while I don't think Sacred Site should point to that list, there's currently nothing else in place for that link so I thought it better to clear it for the moment than to leave it as a redlink. :) --Firien § 12:01, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Yeah - hopefully now that it's not pretending to be a real article, someone might come along and write something more informative. Quite a few of those redirects should have had articles, but I checked the history of each one but they were all created as straight redirects, so I don't think there's any harm in making space for future articles to be created. --Firien § 12:13, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Pop Culture sections edit

What do you think of these? I think they are indulgent, undisciplined lists of - well, trivia. Some bloke is telling me that the Pop Culture list on Orangutan is important because it is how we view orangutans. wtf? I suspect the people creating the list of Pop Culture have more interest in their pet character than they do in the subject of the article. I thought WP was a serious project, not a bank of pages where people could list their pop culture favourites. --Merbabu 13:18, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Don't Threaten Me edit

If an admin wants to take issue with me, let them. Don't threaten me and tell me to quit editing an article. If you have rational arguments, use them, not threats. And please read Wikipedia:Avoid trivia sections in articles, which says things like "Whenever you see a "trivia section", take a look at each fact and consider how you might integrate it into the larger text, whether by inserting it into a section, adding a new section, or creating a more targeted list of closely-related items, such as Cameos or Continuity errors." It does not say, "Delete trivia sections wherever they may be found."--Prosfilaes 08:36, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Best to leave it now before the admins who are now watching this article choose to take issue with you..." is a threat. If you want to ask me to drop it, make it a request and don't bring up the admins. If you think the problems is between Merbabu and I, then perhaps you ought to be posting to his talk page too, instead of threatening me on behalf of your friend.--Prosfilaes 08:48, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mount name edit

I guess whatever the reason is, Gunung Gede can be translated with Mount Gede without any problem. Similar case with Kawah when I saw the name in Volcanism Global Program website as Kawah Kamojang, for example, I'd rather to translate it with Kamojang Crater. However when the name is really attached to the subject, for example in Anak Krakatau, I'd rather not to translate it. It would be a problem if somebody say Mount Gunung Gede, wouldn't it? — Indon (reply) — 09:27, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I can understand the travel brochure of not translating Gunung with Mount due to its effectiveness for foreign travellers to ask directions to the local people. However, major articles about geology and volcanology always translate Gunung with Mount, or not to use Gunung/Mount at all. — Indon (reply) — 09:37, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Haunted locations article edit

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand the message you left on my talk page about this article. You said,

"I would object to have to put a citation on a list - its is the provenance of the article itslef to be adequately refrenced."

What exactly do you mean by that? I see you left a similar comment on the talk page of the article itself; you seem to be objecting to the citation needed tags I put on everything that didn't have a source, but I don't understand why you would object to that. I added sources for several of them myself; and am working on finding sources for some of the other ones, but I don't want to source the entire article all by myself without help. The citation needed tags are a cry for others to help me source the article. They are also a reminder for people adding locations; if you saw a thing on the t.v. about how place x was haunted and you add place x to the article, you should say the name of the show where you heard about it. If you read in a travel magazine that place x was haunted and you add it to the article, you should say the name of the travel magazine. Why do you find this objectionable? I'm even more confused seeing as earlier on your talk page User:Longhair was praising you for your work on sourcing Westerly (Australian literary magazine). I don't understand. Could you explain what you ment a little more clearly? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs) 15:35, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think I see what you're saying now. You are saying that for instances where there is a different Wikipedia article on place x, the citation that place x is haunted should go in the article on place x, not the list of haunted locations. Place x can be added to the list of haunted locations, and if people want a source for the assertion that it's haunted they should go to the article on place x. Is that what you are saying?
If that is what you meant, I think a lot of people think that way, and indeed, the articles on these places are where I'm finding a lot of the sources I'm adding to the list. However, I think that the source should be cited both in the article on place x and in the list article. Wikipedia:List guideline seems to support that conclusion in section titled "References for list Items". As for Alkimos (ship), I see the citation in the main article, and have copied it to the list.~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs) 16:01, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Long Boring Story edit

I'd love to hear it... and I'm willing to wait because if you are in AU it is pretty late. I moved it because I could find no verifiable sources that refer to this as the Murchison region of Western Australia while I did find a source that called it a shire. If this is incorrect, a move back isn't that difficult a thing to do; there just needs to be a source for the name.--Isotope23 16:02, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Scratch that, I found some sources that call it "Murchison region" and some that call it a Shire. Regardless, a discussion of the best name for the article and appropriate redirects if necessary would be a good thing.--Isotope23 16:15, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the intransigent, I'm afraid he is entirely irrational, arrogant and uncooperative, and he needs to be taken to task immediately lest he get any further out of our control. Personally, I would abandon your mediation idea. Why bother? I advise you take it straight to Arbitration. He simply should not be allowed to get away with ignoring legal threats and failing to follow orders.

By the way, Satu, have you been hitting sauce again?? You're sounding like the Christmas Cheer has reached Perth a little early this year! :) LOL Sarah Ewart 00:30, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oh, dear, dear Satu, I think we have crossed-wires. Re this. When I wrote the above, I was talking about Gnang failing to respond to your legal threats and complete his overhaul of Wikipedia:Can we help you?. I didn't realise you were being serious and talking about someone else, I'm terribly sorry about that. Maybe you should email me more info and I'll give you an actual, serious answer. :) Sarah Ewart 01:09, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
My appologies for starting some leviaty to reduce the apparant stress that SatuSuro was displaying and causing further complications, I'll go sheepishly sit in the corner now. Gnangarra 01:21, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nice work on O in pop culture article. Looks like a fantastic solution to me. Here's hoping someone else agrees, too. I replied to your email. Cheers mate, Sarah Ewart 13:43, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

O-a (or should that be O-h?) edit

I checked it out when you mentioned it a while back. By then it seemed that other users / admins had it well in hand, and I didn't have a new and improved original recipe for peace and quiet to offer, so I kept my mouth shut. My opinion is:

  1. There should be a cultural references section;
  2. There are too many cultural references to enumerate them all;
  3. Randomly plucking out a handful is not the way to go;
  4. Considering it is such a prominent example of what the zoo insiders call "charismatic megafauna", I should think there would be published material on its impact on, and representation in, human culture. For example, I wouldn't be surprised to see the animal discussed in Figuring Animals: Essays on Animal Images in Art, Literature, Philosophy, and Popular Culture by Mary Sanders Pollock and Catherine Rainwater; or Representing Animals by Nigel Rothfels.

One of the things that frustrates me about Wikipedia is the persistent failure to settle disputes like this by hitting the books. We prefer to revert, discuss, eventually block or protect. Hesperian 00:32, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Murchison edit

I'll just go ahead and respond on the talk page so the discussion doesn't have to happen twice. Thanks!--Isotope23 00:48, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hehe... I really need to crank up my LGA conversion project again. At one stage I was generating one every 3.8 minutes, and there's quite a few to do. Unfortunately, I got distracted by numerous other projects :P Orderinchaos78 13:16, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks :) It was easier than Gardenvale, Victoria, my bane of yesterday morning and this morning that saw my phone bill increase by a miniscule amount. :| Orderinchaos78 13:19, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Twoz a bold move brushing aside caution and applying what would have been consensus anyway, Murchison (Western Australia) is the new home of Murchison region of Western Australia. To ensure my boldness was complete it fixed all the redircts from other articles. Given the number of articles that linked I think would have been a good pointer to the status of the region, though the challenge has had its benefits. Anyway one scrub fire extinguished whats the next? Gnangarra 14:11, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Kota Gede edit

You mean put the Javanese in the interwiki too? I'm afraid I can't do that unless there's an article there, and unless I'm mistaken there isn't. I just noticed that there were pages on id: and nl: and linked them. You can write one or ask someone at the Javanese Wikipedia to translate one. I can't write Javanese myself. post 2am edit

An interesting observation is that my watchlist became very quiet after 2am local, I wonder whether this is an indicator that maybe I've stayed up too late again. Gnangarra 17:26, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

BTW edit

I just got around to looking at the Orangutan article you mentioned before. I can't believe that people are essentially edit warring over whether or not Every Which Way But Loose et. al. should be mentioned. I left them a reminder that WP:LAME exists for such arguments...--Isotope23 17:40, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks . . . edit

for the welcome message you sent. I suppose it was my tweak to the Randolph Stow article that attracted your attention? Merry Christmas. Deor 20:07, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't know whether this is something you might find interesting, but beginning on page 24 [here] is an article about a 1950s collector of fantasy literature in Perth and his troubles with Customs, written by two fellows with Western Australian connections. Deor 00:12, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Tas project edit

Actually... I while back, I thought it might be a good idea to "move/rename" the Hobart wikiproject to an all encompassing Tasmania project! A lot of the current project content is state-focused, rather than Hobart-focused, anyway. What do you think? -- Chuq 01:24, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Other state projects edit

Let's get these three working and comfortable first so we have a healthy base to draw on for creating the other 4 (I'd include NT as well, and maybe even an offshore territories WP?) I'd hate to end up with several substandard projects because we overextended ourselves too early ... just my thoughts Orderinchaos78 03:58, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rats in the ranks edit

My I suggest Nineteen_Eighty-Four. Not sure if "Since Winston is morbidly afraid of rats, a cage of the hungry vermin is placed over his eyes, so that when the door is opened, they will eat their way through his skull." is suitable for your kids :D (Caniago 04:40, 23 December 2006 (UTC))Reply

Happy Christmas and a wet New Year edit

Hi Satu, Happy Christmas and here's hoping for a wet 2007!!! This is my first year on wikipedia (although I've been reading for years) in fact it might only be 6 months so far. I will see you around no doubt. New Year's resolution suggestion - get those boxes out of the garage and dust all those references off. After six months, I think I am really trying to follow Indon's example and add good info but vandal and cluelessness patrol remains a distraction. All the best Merbabu 13:53, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Christmas edit

Hi SatuSoro, thanks for the Christmas greeting, and please accept mine in return. Thanks for your help through the year. Phaedrus86 22:52, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Layout of your main page edit

Hi SatuSoro. I noticed that your main page is a bit broken if displayed in the Firefox browser in that the Picture of the Day overwrites the Wikipedia Signpost and the top of the Tip of the Day. It displays better in IE7 but only looks correctly arranged if the browser is maximised on a high resolution display - less than that and the Picture of the Day is moved to below the Tip of the Day. Firefox is 10 - 20% of users these days I understand, enough to warrant pointing the error out to you.

One way of getting around the problem is to use three tables, with a main table containing the other two, one containing all the items on the left, the other containing all the items on the right (Signpost and Tip of the Day). This works in both Firefox and IE7, and should work ok in all browsers. I am sure there are better solutions using CSS, this is one way of fixing it. It also fixes a minor error in the HTML you borrowed from my page for the Signpost and Tip of the Day - the last </td> should be a </tr>.

I have put a copy up in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Phaedrus86/sandbox2. I'll leave it there for a week or so. I commented out the categories at the end of the page so if you copy the source from this page you will want to remove the <!-- --> comment tags. Phaedrus86 05:29, 24 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ghouls. edit

I found the link at project Aus (I still go there!) and thought I would give some encouragement. Will try and do some real editing now. Not at my current favorite article though West Perth. Did you notice Banksia brownii at front page? Fred 10:02, 24 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
