Welcome edit

If you get stuck with anything, just ask. Here’s good. Schwede66 17:08, 12 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much! I'm sure I'll need to!

Also keep safe, and don't be too sceptical about these little Covid critters - they are real and Auckland is where they seem to be hanging out at present until Jacinda and Ashley can get them corralled again!  Velella  Velella Talk   23:01, 17 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Velella. Not sure how to post this back to you. I'm sure I'll learn these things. And don't worry. I am not remotely sceptical about Covid Critters. jepercival (talk) (talk) 23:21, 17 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

That got to me fine. To grab another editors' attention you can ping them using {{u|Jane Percival }} as an example, but without the "nowiki" tags - but always sign it using 4 tildes as without them no ping is sent. Regards  Velella  Velella Talk   23:29, 17 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Recent edit reversion edit

In this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.

I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.S Philbrick(Talk) 13:14, 29 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Sphilbrick. Thanks for picking up on the copyright issues with the page I recently posted - Thomas Ward (astronomer). I'm new to editing and that was my first project - I guess it's good to make mistakes and learn from them - and to understand the Creative Commons licence. I'd like to rework the page without those references... many of the newspaper clippings I found, have similar information in them. But... I no longer have my draft page. Is there any chance you can access the version you deleted? Or am I being too cheeky? If I have to start from scratch, well, so be it.

Not sure if you want to take the reference out of the current (old version) of the page, as that's where I originally found it. jepercival (talk) (talk) 10:43, 30 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Jane Percival, Thanks for posting at my talk page. You're correct that I did not see this message and only know about it because you mentioned it at my talk page. When you get a chance, could you check in at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions and ask for help with your signature? it isn't quite right, and the people that hang out at the teahouse can probably do a better job of helping you fix it? S Philbrick(Talk) 13:05, 30 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sphilbrick Thanks very much - I'll do as you suggest. jepercival (talk) (talk) 22:40, 30 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sphilbrick Hi Sphilbrick. I've been working on the Joseph Thomas Ward page, and wonder if you'd care to look at it before I publish it. Just to make sure that I'm on track this time. I've pretty well removed all the references to the Te Ara - Encyclopedia of New Zealand page, except for the reference to Ward's birth and coming to New Zealand which I hope is okay to leave in. Otherwise I'll just take that out altogether as I couldn't find any other references to those facts. I'll understand if you're too busy. jepercival (talk) 09:03, 2 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sphilbrick Oh, here's the link to my sandbox... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jane_Percival/sandbox jepercival (talk) 09:04, 2 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Jane Percival, Thanks for fixing your signature. Please don;t wait for my review to publish. S Philbrick(Talk) 12:29, 2 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
When you say that you “removed all the references to the Te Ara - Encyclopedia of New Zealand page”, I wonder whether you understand what the previous problem was that let to Sphilbrick‘s intervention. Using Te Ara as a reference was not the problem; in fact it is a necessity given that it is an authoritative source for Ward. The issue was that presumably, you had copied the text of that source. That is not permissible as they have copyright on that text. I have not read the source; can you please confirm here that the draft is now written in your own words? That there won’t be similarities in prose between Te Ara and the draft? Schwede66 18:09, 2 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
    • Schwede66Sphilbrick Thanks to both of you. Ah... you know, I should've understood after years of writing academic essays and understanding about plagiarism. I'll double check that one first sentence, but yes, the remainder has been paraphrased into my own words. jepercival (talk) 22:15, 2 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Another GSoW kiwi edit

Hi there, I have been working on the NZ Skeptics article recently and noted your discussion in the Talk area. This is just to touch base to see if you are still working with Susan and doing editing etc. I am from Auckland and did my training for GSoW about three years ago and have continued doing Wikipedia writing and editing. I am unsure how many Kiwis are active in the group these days, so it would be good to hear how things are going for you. My name is Greg Chalmers, also known as Realitylink (talk) 22:07, 30 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Greg. I only just now saw your message. I started my training with Susan in about 2019/2020 - got through it all and really enjoyed it, but then my elderly Dad got sick and I had to reluctantly set it aside. I'm about to be in a position to start up again, and have wondered if I've left it too late. I was also in the greater Auckland area until about a month ago. Now I'm in Napier (although actually, I'm physically in Japan at the moment). Cheers, Jane 133.106.33.5 (talk) 12:24, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Jane. I am sure you will be fine getting back into writing and editing articles and it seems like Adrienne and Susan are going to set up some sessions for revision. I am happy to help and it will be good to keep in touch. Take care now. Greg Realitylink (talk) 22:51, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
