Wales on rugby union.

By any reasonable definition of a "National Sport", Rugby Union lags behind Association football in Wales. Geographical Distibution, attendance figures for major clubs, local participation. Stating that Rugby is the national sport of Wales is at best debatable and at worst a downright inaccuracy.
- I think you are wrong unfortunately. I was pretty sure that rugby was the national sport of Wales and after looking into it I'm even more confident. All those things you have stated above do not mean it's not the national sport. It's a cultural thing more then anything else. As a soccer player living in NZ it's pretty clear to me that just because more people player soccer and netball does not mean that all of a sudden rugby isn't the national sport. The same is true of other sports in other countries. If you look around at the relevant articles in wiki and the web the concensus is that the national sport is rugby. There are people that disagree but the vast majority seem to concede that rugby is the national sport. Please do a little research before deciding to force this opinion on everyone. Add a reference, something that is verfiable preferably. Anyway, the best link I found was this one, an icWales soccer columnist talks about applying for the job as Wales Rugby Coach and says: The ad itself is a master of understatement, "Rugby union is the national sport of Wales with passionate and loyal support throughout the nation."
- Which roughly translates as, "Fail to win the next World Cup and everyone will come round and burn your house down."
- He seems to think rugby is the national sport, and he's a soccer columist!
Well Shudda, You'd actually have to be Welsh to understand the comedy of using the Western Mail as an impartial source on the whole football/rugby debate. You're better off asking George Dubya for an impartial opinion on gay marriage.
It is quite simple really. More participants, more fans, more support, more facilities = national sport.
