Managing a conflict of interest

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. You appear to be engaged in an edit war with one or more editors according to your reverts at Nick Xenophon. Although repeatedly reverting or undoing another editor's contributions may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Wikipedia this is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, and often creates animosity between editors. Instead of edit warring, please discuss the situation with the editor(s) involved and try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to lose editing privileges. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Just frustrated at the lack of information like margin of error, sample size, etc. These sorts of pages are a much better way of collecting polling DATA than poll of polls compiled by online news sources. slave owners in South Australian history

I don't want to be perceived as "whitewashing" SA's history, but it is not helpful to go round and add "and slaveholder" to the etymology of things and places that were named after people prominent in the establishment of the colony. I have not seen the new book you are using as the reference, so do not know precisely what it says, and undoubtedly it gives a different perspective than some other references. I note for example that Cockburn's Pastoral Pioneers of Australia (1925) (page 65 of the PDF, bottom right of page 9 of the book) says of Angas and slaves:

"In a career full of great achieve­ments, his biographer claims for him the origination of the South Australian Company, the Bank of South Australia, the National Pro­vincial Bank of England, and the Union Bank of Australia; a large share in the emancipation of the slaves in Honduras and the Mos­quito Coast; while his “foresight and shrewdness won for Great Bri­tain the possession of New Zealand as a colony.”

Other historic articles in Australia after his death also gave him credit for emancipation of slaves in Honduras. I have removed the "slaveholder" remark from articles about streets etc, but have not touched the articles about people themselves without a better reason. --Scott Davis ^Talk 04:46, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

My argument: Not helpful to whom? So, it is not helpful to add that he was a "politician, banker and slaveholder" but it is fine to describe him as the "first chairman of the South Australia Company"? A more objective position is to state what he was or not have a description at all although there are many examples on Wikipedia where descriptions of this kind are given. I also note that you are bolstering the claim that he was a slaveholder. Other editors have requested a citation for the description instead of unilaterally deleting it. The emancipation of slavery is a reference to an ADB article which fails to mention his possession of slaves. For your convenience:

"The legacies of British Slave-ownership Centre at University College London has created a database containing the identity of all slave-owners in the British colonies and estates in the British Caribbean colonies at the time of abolition. According tho this database, George Fife Angas (1789-1879)... was compensated for four claims in Honduras in 1835. The claims involved more than ₤6,942 for 121 slaves." Island Off the Coast of Asia

Does the book provide evidence beyond the Legacies of British Slave-ownership database for George Fife Angas ever actually owning any slaves? The database entry says that he had some kind of association with the claims, and that he collected the cash but was not the claimant. I haven't found if it says anywhere why he collected the cash or what he did with it afterwards. Have you? Other reports have him in the company of William Wilberforce and other well-known emancipists, he either had a significant change of heart, or he was never a slave-owner. I have not said he might not have benefited indirectly through slavery (such as slaves harvesting the timber for carpentry), but that is a far cry from claiming in every mention of him after 1836 that he was a slaveholder (when clearly he was not after 1835, if ever before that).

To answer "not helpful to whom?" - to readers of Wikipedia. It is helpful to say that Angas Street was named after the chairman of the South Australia Company. Angas Street was not named after Angas because he had previously been a slaveholder (noting that we do not have any information that he had been, only that he collected compensation money from claims made by former slaveowners other than himself). You might notice that I have not removed the material from George Fife Angas, where it would be appropriate (if confirmed, see that talk page), but it is undue weight and WP:OR to describe Angas as a slaveholder at every reference to his later activities when the available sources don't. --Scott Davis ^Talk 13:38, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Is it not original research to confirm the sources of a scholarly text written by a Professor? However, your observation that Fife was not proven by the Legacies database to have been an actual slaveholder is interesting. Perhaps a better description is to say he had "business associations with slaveholders". As far as Angas Street is concerned, a more objective description is to state "George Fife Angas in recognition of his chairmanship of the South Australia Company". Thoughts? Yes, I'm happy with that phrasing on Angas Street and similar phrasing in any other relevant articles. It would be helpful to discover why Angas collected the money, and what he did with it. It is possible that as a banker in London with connections in Honduras, he was a natural choice to act essentially as a courier service (morality of that to be determined separately). Currie seems not to have been a slaveholder himself either, although he benefited directly and indirectly from the government largess. It certainly looks like there is more to write (but possibly research required to be published first) about the Slave Compensation Act 1837 and its effects. My concern about Angas in particular is that "slaveholder" does not just seem to be glossed over in other biographies, it appears to be directly opposed to his character and other information about his life and associates. --Scott Davis ^Talk 00:03, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
