A note about Harvard style citations edit

"Harvard-style" references. Step to step instructions are:

  • Click the "Cite" button, then choose the "Manual" tab and the "Basic" option at the bottom.
  • In the "enter your citation here" box that comes up, type "{{". This takes you a template search form.
  • In the template search form, type "harvp" (for Harvard citations with parentheses) or "harvnb" (for Harvard citations without parentheses – these are common in other articles), and click on the template name.
  • Fill in the fields that you need (the authors' surnames, year and page / page range at a minimum). You can add and remove fields using the tab on left-hand side.
  • When you are done click the "Insert citation" button in the top-right of the box, then click through the remaining dialogues to actually insert the citation and save the edit in the usual way.

Advice for article improvement edit

Hi JArthur1984, sorry for bothering. I've been working on the page for the Chinese botanist and academic Hu Xiansu for a while now. Can you take a quick look and see if there's any glaring issues present? Thanks! Zinderboff(talk) 13:25, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I would be happy to review in detail. From my initial quick overview, I noticed a couple of missing punctuation marks and added them. My other suggestion is to add further citations. For example, in the early life section, there are a couple of paragraphs without citations. It may be that they are all from the source at the end of the section, I did not look at sources yet. Although the policies do not require that a citation appear at the end of every sentence (at the end of a paragraph may be sufficient, for example, if the source supports the entire paragraph), the overall trend is that China-related articles are edited vigorously. For this reason, almost all of my edits include a citation at the end of the sentence. My approach is probably overboard, but I like to make things extremely clear, especially for editors who may come to an article very much into the future.
I will look more closely at the substance of the article later. These are initial reactions. Happy editing! JArthur1984 (talk) 13:47, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the comprehensive review! I really appreciate it!
The current sourcing quality varies quite a bit: from books and scientific articles to some brief biographies about him on some institutions he worked for (cited for the time being before I find better sources). I know of this one Chinese botanist who seems to be extremely interested in Metasequoia and Hu Xiansu. Their website about the topic seems to list relevent sources, but I don't have access to most listed unfortunately. Zinderboff(talk) 15:34, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
