Tombstone edit

I'm well aware of 3RR, so I'm not going to be reverting any more times. By the way, you'd do well to talk to User:Rich Farmbrough: I agree that the wording is a problem, and I've asked him to run his bot to change the wording to put metric second. Nyttend 15:47, 26 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Man Enters the Cosmos edit

The article was already under review. I am not sure moving the images around helps. I think due to the brevity of the article, they are better on the right where they can be next to the appropriate text. The sundial is visible if you see the full size image. I think it is helpful to have such a picture until a better one can be taken. In short, since the article is under review without comment about the images I think they should be reverted. Also, since the template is not a listing of RHP, but rather relevant info, I think the template is appropriate. I am going to revert. Be careful with edits since it is under review.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 19:18, 26 October 2007 (UTC) Reply

Battle of Bad Axe edit

I will take a look at it in the next day or so. Not sure who else to ping on it - I called in a lot of favors on getting Larrys Creek ready for TFA, so I am tapped out at the moment. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 12:56, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for adding the coordiantes. I have to finish this map {{Lycoming County Pennsylvania Map}} so Dincher and I can submit an article to FLC, then I can work on the Black Hawk Map more. I have a new "fort icon" that I like better - will try to upload it.
Hi Ivo, I started some copyedits on Battle of Bad Axe. I put the "Background" battles into chronological order as I thought it was confusing before. I think absolute dating (on May 23) is clearer than just relative dating (five days before). I am working on the rest of the article, but have some questions I think you should answer before I make more edits.
First off, the timing after the Battle of Wisconsin Heights as currently worded is unclear to me. "Background" ends with the Battle of Wisconsin Heights on June 21. "Prelude" opens with Neapope addressing the militia in the Ho Chunk language on the morning of June 22 (I tweaked this sentence already). The next paragraph opens with "Following the engagement at Wisconsin Heights, the militia decided to wait until the following day to pursue Black Hawk. To their surprise, when morning arrived, their enemy had disappeared.[5][8]" This makes it sound like the morning of the 22nd the British Band was gone, but the last paragraph had them there for Neapope's speech, so was it really on the morning of the 23rd? Further confusion comes from the last sentence of this second paragraph: "The band fled west toward the banks of the Mississippi River, with a week's head start on the militia, over rugged terrain.". I can see a day or two head start, but a week is confusing.
Next during the battle itself on Day 2, the first paragraph ends with "The slaughter that followed would continue for the next eight hours." In the second paragraph this sentence has some sort of error in it: "The battle wore on four 30 minutes, until Atkinson came up with Dodge's center element, closing in the remaining Native warriors." Either the battle "wore on for 30 minutes" (which seems at odds with eight hours above) or it "wore on for four hours and thirty minutes" which seems more consistent with the 8 hour statement and "wore on". This last is probably source dependent, but it seems odd that the exact number of casualties is known for the first day of the battle, but the second day and total casualties are so vague. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:56, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification Ivo - all you say makes sense to me. When you have edited it as you want, let me know and I will finish up. I also wondered if it would be worth mentioning that the Indian Creek massacre was almost certainly not committed by Black Hawk / British Band forces, and perhaps adding a bit at the end on the legacy of Black Hawk (hockey teams and helicopters) instead of just ending with rioters in Detroit. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:24, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I will add the overall article to my list of things to do, may take me a while to read it carefully and think about organization. I also have a cabin icon I like better on the map now, as well as a new teepee icon for native villages. I made the teepee light orange-brown (sort of animal skin color) but am not sure it stands out well enough (it was white at first but that was very hard to see). I do need to adjust the base map color too. My thought on Bad Axe was more that this is the last article in the series on the war, so it seemed odd to have the last sentence be about the Detroit rioters with Black Hawk still in captivity. I was not thinking as much about the overall Black Hawk War article and a long term view makes more sense there, but I would still say about Black Hawk's release and death. Language edit

Hello. I saw your barnstar given to Caroig. It is well deserved, he deserves it for his work but I am kind of concerned with your language there. I am the person who nominated the geobox categories to CFD, thus terms like "process hound" and "rule baron" hurt me, especially that I nominated them in good faith. I have no personal issues, nor vendetta here and I'm surprised some people reacted so much nervous. I respect you and your longtime work, as I've told you, when we discussed Christmas trees in the summer :), so I hope the respect and good will is mutual. Cheers. - Darwinek 20:33, 26 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your answer, I am glad we've been always cool :). As for the Christmas trees, I will try to find out if there are any farms near my location. - Darwinek 21:12, 26 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Assessment edit

I assume you mean for assessing the Illinois articles? Yeah, I got on a little bit of a kick and was bored, so I thought what the heck. Hopefully everything's pretty accurate. My methodology for the most part was:

  • Places over 100,000 = Top Priority
  • Places in Chicago 7-County 50,000-100,000 = High Priority
  • Places outside Chicago 7-County 25,000-100,000 = High Priority
  • Places in Chicago 7-County 5,000-50,000 = Mid Priority
  • Places outside Chicago 7-County 5,000-25,000 = Mid Priority
  • Places under 5,000 = Low Priority

Granted, there were some exceptions, mainly for the smaller places. I also did some other miscellaneous things along the way (people, points of interest, rivers, sports teams, etc.). I'll try to get to assessing more places when I get around to it.

Otherwise, thanks to you and the other regulars for keeping this project rolling. I'm always glad to help out when I can. Abog 04:11, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wisconsin Towns edit

The Wisconsin Towns system can be quirky and vexing especially with Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan using townships as their local civil divisions while Wisconsin uses just towns for its local civil division. This confuses people. Thank you- RFD 12:09, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Welcome back! You can always contact either RFD or me if you want specific help with this topic. RFD lives on the western side of Wisconsin, and I live on the eastern side. I have been to most parts of the state, and I suspect that RFD has been too. Royalbroil 12:40, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Warrior (1832) and What is a Boat edit

A couple quick comments. Thanks for your edits on the article. :) I was unaware of the distinction, which brings me to another point, just so I am sure I understand this correctly, a boat operates on mostly inland waters and a ship operates at sea, is that about right? Also, is the title okay, or does the title need to include its a steamboat, that seemed a bit much for a title to me but would be happy to submit to prevailing convention on this. IvoShandor 10:46, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

What is funny is that as soon as I saw your comment at WP:SHIPS I went to change the article, got there it still read "ship", clicked edit, and it read "vessel" and just second from an edit conflict we were. :) IvoShandor 10:52, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

What is a boat:

  • Vessels that operate on inland waterways and not at sea are generally boats.
  • Torpedo boats are boats. (Even though they operate at sea, and some World War II* * German torpedo boats were destroyer size)
  • Submarines are boats. (This might be because they started out as submarine torpedo boats)
  • Vessels carried by ships are boats (The only problem with this definition is that there are now some ships so large that they could carry a ship as large as the Titanic on board. There is a saying: "A ship can carry a boat, but a boat cannot carry a ship."

I like the idea of dates with vessels, as often the same name is used many times. --Toddy1 19:02, 28 October 2007 (UTC)) Reply

Helena, Wisconsin edit

I started an article about Helena, Wisconsin. Maybe, I am crazy doing it especially after reading the discussion page at the Battle of Bad Axe. I hope it helps. I prefer doing articles about unincorporated communities in Wisconsin more then I do biographies on Wikipedia, however. Less hassles and stress I guess although I would do biographies if I feel there is a need. I hope the Helena, Wisconsin article helps in a small way. Thank you-RFD 21:48, 30 October 2007 (UTC) Reply

Forrester Afd edit

  • Hi IvoShandor - Gary Forrester here. I have apologized to Kandar, and I am apologizing to you. I did not intend malice when I wrote on the Illinois project site that the article bearing my name was "good." It was simply misguided on my part, without a proper appreciation of the Illinois project. It was stupid on my part. I hope, however, that you would see fit to support the retention of the Wikipedia article that bears my name. Although the information came via my site, the article was well-researched by a number of people who were assisting me, and they felt that the achievements in music & Indian law & literature were "notable." I expect the end-product was that we over-stated things and the article could use a good humbling edit, and for that I thank you. Best regards from New Zealand. --Forrestergaz 02:26, 5 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Stephen A. Douglas edit

No worries. Whenever I decline a protection request, I add the article to my watchlist to check the vandalism and protect if necessary. Just to let you know, when an article is declined, you care request an examination by another administrator. No admin will get offended if you want a second opinion, because we are not perfect. I am sure there are thousands of articles with 6 month vandalism that hasn't been fixed because very few people actually watch those articles, but in time we will reach them. That AFD edit

Did you see that last comment in the AFD? I don't know if you really wanted to read it, so I'll summarize:

"Hi, I just finished playing tennis at some famous tennis club blah blah blah Have you ever been to New Zealand? It's beautiful blah blah blah my parents are dying in a nursing home in central Illinois blah blah blah New Zealand might be destroyed in an earthquake blah blah blah I really am notable because I have contributors and supporters blah blah blah I'm counting my blessings because I'm here in pretty New Zealand and America is fighting a war in Iraq and innocent civilians are getting killed and the Bush administration is populated with liars."

I'm not sure what any of that diatribe had to with his article. Anyway, my point (besides being rather snarky about the AFD) is that occasionally people come around here with no idea what Wikipedia is really about. And there are people who will come by and try your patience. It doesn't help to get upset about them. Besides, the guy didn't even know the difference between article space and user space.

On second thought, I'd rather be snarky about the AFD. If his parents are dying in Illinois, how come he isn't back there with them? I'd ask, but then I'd get a response that boils down to tl;dr. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 16:22, 10 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have returned to reviewing GAs to help with a backlog after finishing a section for GA sweeps, and started with a brief article that met all of the criteria. I made a few changes concerning grammar, please revert if you think they're incorrect. The article has been listed under "Military people" at WP:GA. Keep up the good work, I think I've read most of your articles related to the Black Hawk War. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 07:18, 17 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re:Hey buddy edit

Hey guy, had a great Thanksgiving, hope you have had a good one. I really haven't done much on the Wiki either, my motivator is gone! ;) I have set up that the geoboxes are being put in by a bot though, but other than that, just tinkering here and there. I have not gone forward with the NRHPs yet, I hope to have your help with it. I'll be on AIM anytime you are ready to chat.--Kranar drogin (talk) 13:55, 23 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, that is certainly a step in the right direction!--Kranar drogin (talk) 07:30, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Happy Thanksgiving edit

Always good to hear from you and take your time - while I hope at some point you decide to come back, I also understand if you never do. Kranar and I will work on the Black Hawk map. Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:44, 23 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Happy Thanksgiving. Welcome back. Hope very much that your experience on Wikipedia is never ruined again. Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 15:27, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Userpage edit

I saw your message to Ryan and restored your userpage. Just trying to be helpful but it occurs to me I should have asked if you wanted it all restored or just some revisions. I can redelete it and only restore some if you like. Good to see you back, btw. WjBscribe 07:01, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

lol - its just been deleted again as it had the speedy template on it. So (a) would you like me to restore it and (b) do you want all of it or just some of it? WjBscribe 07:01, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Attack at Ament's Cabin GA review edit

Hi, just to let you know I am not a regular reviewer or aiming to to be one. I am just following the guidelines as best as I can, which includes the "review a GA candidate as you nominate one", which is how I chose Attack at Ament's Cabin as my second nominated piece (Bega schoolgirl murders was my first). I apologise if my bold second go at a review has offended you. In my defence, I can only state I reviewed to what I believe were the guidelines for a GA. On minor details like red links which I knew were not part of the criteria, I lumped it in the details as a suggestion to improve the article, not as part of the GA-List.

I am curious about the statement "Concerns about comprehensiveness, which is an FA-requirement." Does this mean a GA article is only grammatically correct but can present a confusing picture of events (as per statement on what kind of contact Hodge's weapon had with Girty, and the cause of the natives' retreat)? Contradictions between sources can be brought to notice in the article but Attack at Ament's Cabin has no mention of there being such contradictions. (... I think perhaps it would serve us better if you could detail here why there is no contradiction between the sources, did I misread something?) I do admit I am strict on how I judge (my third review is of Battle of Vimy Ridge) and perhaps overly so, but I also fear if I relax, I could be doing worse. I appreciate your statements, and encourage you to bring it up for WP:GAR. I too would like to know if I was too strict in judgement or in error. Cheers. No hard feelings, ever. :-) I understand the conflicts raging in the mind when all possibilities have been researched only to be presented with multiple scenarios of the same instance, which seems impossible to merge into one from all angles. That is the problem with research on the early parts of history when most records are oral, and written records tend to be tainted with bias or mythological inflation, which leads me to respect historians who explore all possibilities.
Seriously, I really enjoyed reading Attack at Ament's Cabin (just compare it the mass of Wiki articles, especially popular literature and entertainment), and I was disappointed no one took it up to address my concerns (by address, I mean, to correct the portions pointed out, or to explain what the statements mean, or to defend the article, etc) within the holding period. It is really unfortunate I chose to review it during your inactivity. Thank you for pointing out the history behind your nick. All I knew about Ghostbuster's baddies were Gozer, Gatekeeper and Keymaster. Now I know more. :-D Jappalang (talk) 13:19, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

A modest offering edit

I know that this is not exactly the sort of civil rights books that you are posting, but since prequels are the rage these days, well this event is sort of a prequel to the Civil Rights movement and it is (opinion) useful to keep this sort of thing in mind when looking at the 1950s and 1960s. Anyway, it's the Tulsa race Riot: A Report by the Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921, published by said commission in 2001. I have a copy if you can't find one. I'm a book person too and like to see tham, rather than other www sources used because they can't usually just be googled. Carptrash (talk) 22:36, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

1. No need to apologize and 2. it is accepted. As you've no doubt discovered, I have issues too. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 23:07, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your articles edit

We're getting them all. Danny (talk) 02:11, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi again. We got them all except Christmas tree cultivation, which seems to be have two dead external links. I will check them again. This is great stuff. Keep it coming. Danny (talk) 02:32, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bad Axe thoughts edit

Hi Ivo,

Nice to see you active again. As for Bad Axe, I see you saw my copyedit comments. I would also add a cool wikilinked map to it (I will work on it). I do think it needs some polishing before FAC, but need to figure out what exactly.

I just finished an FAC I was not planning on being involved in (but that got the article promoted) which has left me a bit worn out. I am fairly busy in real life and here currently, so let me reread the article and think about it a day or so and get back to you, OK?

I also think I have suggested this before, but User:Kevin Myers has written some very good featured articles on Native American conflicts (Pontiac's Rebellion, some American Revolutionary War stuff) and would be someone to ask to look it over too. I have had a few interactions with him and can ask if you want - not sure how active he is right now.

I also still have looking at the main Black Hawk War article on my mental to do list. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:26, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
