Evidence

I notice that you have decided to make it personal by suggesting that I haven't understood the sources given in the article. Let me allay your fears by saying that I have indeed understood those sources. I would be happy to cooperate with you in bringing additional sources to both articles. The issue here seems to be that you are of the opinion that most authors take as part of the definition that the Gateaux derivative/differential must be linear. I will grant that many do, but the cited sources by Max Zorn, Einar Hille, and Ralph Phillips do not, and neither does the Springer EOM entry. I have adjusted the Gateaux derivative article to indicate the different usages in mathematics. The EOM entry made a rather bizarre distinction between the differential (possibly nonlinear) and the derivative (linear) which was adopted by our own encyclopedia article. I don't know if this is just an unfortunate byproduct of a poor translation from the Russian, but I find the distinction less than helpful, and have excised it. Thanks very much for this. It must have taken you an awfully long time typing that, with all the fancy characters :):). Much appreciated. It has also given me a lot of practice at reading, because I can compare with your transliteration. My error was reading the Hebrew/ Aramaic full stop as a letter, so I missed two words that ended in "aleph - fullstop."

However, try as I might, I still can't work out the missing two aleph-final words in Daniel 1:1-5. I can only find one in each of verses 1 to 3. Could you possibly tell me in which verses the missing two are? I'm wondering if maybe you are counting aleph-final words in the middle of hyphenated words, but even that wouldn't change my count - I can't even find any aleph-final components of hyphenated words. HIMYM

Re [1]. I share your sentiments exactly. I loved the series and admired the great writing and acting up until series four, then it unraveled but there still was the occasional great episode during seasons 5 and 6 (although I've now completely given up on the show and haven't even watched season 7 at all).

I've looked over the episode list, trying to remember which episodes I could recommend, but it's too long ago for me to tell from the plot summaries.

At any rate, since we apparently share the exact same opinion about the series, I thought I'd recommend other comedy series I've greatly enjoyed instead.

Things like Black Books, Louie, Arrested Development or Episodes and of course 30 Rock ([2]) come to mind. If you haven't watched one or more of these, I'd give them a shot rather than holding on to the unfortunately and ungracefully deteriorating HIMYM. I also hear fantastic things about It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia although I never managed to quite get into it for some reason. Another series I liked, but I know it's not for everyone, is Californication -- not a comedy, but enough comedy to offset the drama for more than a few good laughs, if you like the humor (s04e04 "Monkey Business" comes to mind as a great episode that showcases the best of the series). --195.14.197.88 (talk) 19:03, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Newcomer's guide

Hi there! We've all been slowly adding to WP:The End and now it's becoming quite long. It occured to me the other day that we might be able to split it into a guide instead of a single page with the same down-to-earth language and helpfulness. I'll take a look over time - I've made this one of my priorities on Wikipedia, but I don't get a lot of time. From a brief glance, love the format and the look, but not totally sure about the need to split it up so much. But still we could try both. I'm really all for keeping it short, because we run the risk of creating longer policies, and adding to them when what we really need to do is streamline. Still, I'll keep popping my head in to try and refine it, because I do agree it's needed - all of the current introductions/ tutorials seem to be quite long, and no one emphasises the need to learn as you go, and take policies like occasional vitamin supplements. My point is that we can have the broken up version, as well as the unbroken version. With the broken up version, basically I think some things should be left out, such as "Have patience" - by all means say this, but I don't think it should get a separate page. As far as people knowing they can stop and finish later, my belief is they will tend to want something complete. At least, if you wish to adopt this approach, although I would advise trying to limit the number of pages, I would also suggest having an index, either at the end or the beginning, with a one sentence summary of each point on the index page. That way, at least they have an overview. The problem for them is to decide just where they will give up and return later. I once did a ridiculously long internet survey, answering over 100 questions, just because I'd started, so I wanted to get to the end. I didn't want to waste the time I'd already spent, and I figured if I didn't complete the survey, it was definitely wasted. Then I got to the end, and found I didn't have JavaScript turned on, so it was all lost anyway - and the form didn't preserve my clicks when I went back. I never tried it again. Our problem is to try and keep those sorts of people who want to get to the end of the overview. Once they've started, many people won't stop, just to see what's going on. Then afterwards, they'll say, well, never again. I'm keen on the idea, and above all the visual format - this will hold people for a while longer because it looks good. I would suggest if it is to be broken up, keep the number of frames to about 6-8, include a photo on every page, and above all, include a marker at the bottom: "page 3 of 6" etc. I also like the text "You can continue on to the next page of this guide or you can stop here, it's up to you," but (as you have done so far) I would only put this once (though I'm assuming you already agree?). Basically I agree mostly with this format, especially with the idea of teaching them how to understand the user interface. That is a potentially brilliant idea, but don't tell them everything - just get them started. Presumably you agree here also, though. I wouldn't know how to do the graphics side of things here, but I would suggest bright red circles around the key bits, especially the things at the top of the page, such as the tab for the talk page/user page. Then, if someone can do it, just a bit of simple text clearly associated with the circled component, explaining it, in a format that clearly stands out on the page - but I don't know if there's a graphics whizz out there. Perhaps we could try recruiting someone within Wikipedia? Let me know if you think this is too elaborate. IBE (talk) 14:22, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

I think I mostly understand what you mean. So if I understand right, you want the essay and guide to be sort of "companions" with basically the same message but tailored a little differently. Whereas the essay would be a little smaller, less detailed, and easier to get through; the guide would be more comprehensive with a little more graphics and instruction? Give the user full knowledge beforehand what exactly the guide consists of. Is that the general idea?--v/r - TP 15:43, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Thankyou - I am "building up" a dossier, although I would prefer to say that, as things come to hand, I file them away. I don't go searching for evidence, and for a long time I had only a mild problem with Medeis. It just got out of hand, and now needs to be monitored. That said, I don't think Medeis was trolling in that particular instance. I think that edit is a case of: too many troublesome edits have put her fellow Wikipedians a little offside, although maybe she'll quibble with me that I don't understand the offside rule, or something like that ;) IBE (talk) 05:47, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Yeah... the problem is that Medies has the potential to be a very useful contributor, if she would just stop behaving in such an obnoxious fashion. It's not just a question of getting rid of someone annoyning and useless, which would be much easier. Let's hope that we get a positive result next time (or, indeed, that she decides to change her behaviour without official steps being necessary, although I wouldn't put money on that).
