Hi, Am looking for ways to contribute more effectively to Wikipedia. Your suggestions are most welcome!

New York City experience relevant to Wikipedia Takes Chennai edit

Glad to share our experiences. We were organized somewhat formally as a "competition"; possibly you would want to go this route, and possibly you would want to be more informal (which has its advantages too).

One useful tip I think will be to tell the teams to start with an empty memory card and use only one memory card per team, so that it will be easier to sort the photos later. Or if you do not do this, you should be ready to keep very good track of which images belong to which team.

We gave a certain number of points (I think 10 points) for locations in the center city, and another number (I think 20 points) for locations in the farther suburbs. Obviously if you would use such a system you would adapt it to the practicalities of travel in Chennai.

We found it somewhat useful to assign each of the locations/goals an alphanumeric, and to advise teams to take a "context shot" with the alphanumeric written on a card or notepad, which would help keep track of what location each image is of. Here is an example of a "context shot": File:WSTM Mark Frank 0077.jpg, and its corresponding "clean shot": File:WSTM Mark Frank 0076.jpg (obviously it is the "clean shot" only which will be used on Wikipedia). This was helpful to us because we had a list of several hundred goals, and we were able to put the alphanumeric into a special template and get the proper location name outputted. I can certainly understand though, if you find this system overly complicated, and a very careful notation of ever photo taken in order and its location would be of equal usefulness.

We had some difficulty scoring the teams, and I would recommend using something like Template:Hunt to allow the teams to self-score, and then you need only check the top three or so reported scores to verify their accuracy.

We used the Commonist tool to upload the images to Wikimedia Commons, but there were serious problems with this and I would not recommend Commonist or uploading directly to Wikimedia Commons at all, unless there are a very small number of people or most people attending will already understand Wikimedia Commons. Instead, I think I would recommend that the images be first uploaded to Flickr which is easier to use for many people, and which we used for the complementary Wikipedia Loves Art project. Of course if you use Flickr, the teams will have to specify the appropriate Creative Commons licenses there (CC-BY or CC-BY-SA).

We put the rules in printed packets originally, and I will see if we can send you the PDFs soon.

Let me know if you have any other questions.--Pharos (talk) 15:24, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pune edit

Hi,

I have removed the paragraph on Choki Dani that you added to the Pune article. Firstly, any content added to Wikipedia needs to be referenced using reliable sources. Secondly, anything that you mention within the article should be notable enough to be mentioned (it doesn't make sense to talk about every theme park in the article). A good thumb rule is that you can mention a park/museum/... if there is a chance of it having an independent article for itself. Please make sure these criteria are satisfied before you add any content to the article. For more information, see the guideline for Indian cities-related articles.
