Move an image to Commons edit

Greetings Dbenbenn. I was wondering if the picture Image:The Little Prince.jpg from The Little Prince could be moved to Commons.. what do you think? And, would you know, how to do that? (I am a very new user :)

The image was scanned by fr:User:MagicTom for Le Petit Prince and then copied by you into the English version; then there are more local copies in other languages, as well. And I just started one in Russian. Thanks in advance for any help! - ru:User:Bepa - Introvert 09:05, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC) (Talk)

No, the Commons doesn't accept "fair use" material. You can read more at Commons:Commons:Licensing. dbenbenn | talk 13:55, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Clearly I support including an article about the book. It would be appropriate for such an article to list at least some of the films picked by the author as the fifty worst, for instance the worst 1 or 10, although an argument could be made to include all 50, since it is a relativley short list. Pburka 21:24, 10 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

50 Worst edit

Ok, what I think ought to be kept is Medved's original list/book. He was a campaigner for the joys of kitsch film before he became national. At that time, he was just another film writer fresh from a college major, and he was treading the ground already covered by Michael J. Weldon's The Psychotronic Guide to Movies, for example, which had catalogued the non-ironic bad movies for the stoner set. Medved was pithy, though, and he came up with a list. The mass media loves lists. Unfortunately, so do Wiki-visitors. What I'm against is anything that offers our visitors the chance to write their 50 worst. Such a list is inherently POV and therefore violates the deletion guidelines. The only way anyone can vote on it is "delete," if they want to stay within our guidelines. However, we can report on the genre of "worst film lists" and specifically highlight Medved's initial publication. We're tripped up, here, because the article Fifty Worst Films of All Time is not complete, either in terms of discussing Medved nor in having all 50. It would be better, IMO, to delete it and recreate it fresh or to totally rewrite it. Your central point is correct, though: The redirect of the stupid list (50 Worst Movies should redirect to the Medved-dependent Fifty Worst Films of All Time. I will go and amend my vote. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Geogre 02:46, 11 July 2005 (UTC) (Hmmm, I have Weldon in 1983. Surely that can't be right. I know I knew about this stuff before Medved turned from political hack to film hack. I thought it was Weldon first. Memory deserts me.) Geogre 02:54, 11 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

(3149) Okudzhava edit

The name's origin may be "confirmed" in your mind, but do you have a reference to supply? An Internet URL is ideal, but even a book reference would do. Otherwise the asterisk mark will go back in (at the Meanings of asteroid names (3001-3500) page). Urhixidur 00:27, 2005 August 22 (UTC)

The reference I used is the IPA(I took it from the Meanings of asteroid names main page).
This IPA's list indeed has Okudzhava for #3149.
Okudzhava is Bulat Okudzhava (there is no other one!); the biography for Bulat Okudzhava] published on the MP site has it that an asteroid was named after him in 1988. The MP site seems rather trustworthy to me: it is The Official site for the writers of Moscow and Moscow region Russian: "Официальный сайт писателей Москвы и Московской области.
Will those references do it or they aren't substantial enough? Where should I have cited those reference? (I looked on the discussion page, didn't seem like the right place.) Thanks - Introvert talk 00:59, 22 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Talk:Michel Saloff Coste edit

Hi Vera, thank you for your comments about this page. I recognize that there are vanity issues with this page, particularly because (as I noted on the talk page for the entry) M. Coste is not on the HEC website list of regular faculty... but I must confess, I took pity on him as a newcomer. I too, hoped against hope to find an entry about myself in the Wikipedia, and was disappointed. I found the policy against vanity pages before I had the idea of writing a self-referential encyclopedia article, but perhaps he did not see the brief note at the top of the "create a new page" template. Perhaps I'm too willing to give newcomers the benefit of the doubt... only time will tell. In any case, I appreciate your note! Mamawrites 03:13, 22 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hello Introvert, thanks for your comments. As I understand it, the speedy deletion vanity criterion only applies to articles about a person which do not claim that the person has done something notable (e.g. published a book, won a regional/national/international sports competition, etc.) or is notable for another reason. If the article contains any claim of this sort (in this case: it mentions a few books he has authored), its deletion should be discussed at VfD, even if the article was written by the subject. Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Precedents says that professors who have contributed to books are generally considered notable, though, so the article is unlikely to be deleted if you list it at VfD, I think. I'd say that although the article is indeed self-promotional, it doesn't hurt to have it around if it's basically correct, so maybe it would indeed be best to just leave it as it is or maybe add a {{cleanup-importance}} tag if you think that the article still doesn't make clear why he is notable enough for an encyclopedia article. Old style dates Wikify dates. edit

Suppose Ivan Ivanovitch was born 6 January 1813 NS 25 December 1812 OS.

As I see it there are four issues here:

  1. Will the "born in 1812" category include Ivan wrongly?
  2. Will the 1812 article include Ivan Iavanovitch on the OS birthday?
  3. Will the 25 December page include Ivan?
  4. Will it look OK?
  1. I don't think so, the process is smarter than that, and wiifying the date certainly won't affect it.
  2. No, that's a manual process (or the page wuld be overloaded).
  3. Ditto.
  4. Yes, I think because otherwise the date will look something like 6 January 1813 NS December 25 1812 OS to some users.

Ballet - musical form vs. dance technique edit

Hello, Introvert! My edits weren't errors at all and I fail to see what you cannot understand about them. If Prokofiev, for instance, composed a ballet, he didn't compose a 'dance form and technique', but a 'musical composition intended for ballet performance'. That's why I fixed all the links related to ballet compositions to the 'ballet (music)' article. Sounds logical to me... --Missmarple 19:52, 4 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your reply. I believe it is common terminology and solid tradition, to refer to a (European classical) ballet by the name of the composer. With full understanding that it is the music that the composers compose, and they may not be authors of libretto nor choreographers nor stage designers. It is also correct and common to name a ballet after its famous choreographer, like Balanchin's ballet, but that would be referring to a particular choreography.
Of course in full ballet description all cornerstones would be attributed to: the music, the libretto, the choreography, and stage design and decor. But for short, I believe that classical ballets are and will remain Composer's ballets, and in no way this traditional naming diminishes the value and importance of either author - or that of the dancers, for that matter.
As for now, I corrected your edits in three articles about ballets themselves (Pulcinella (ballet), Romeo and Juliet (Prokofiev), Spartacus (ballet)), and changed the wording in Tchaikovsky. You know your list of changes and please if there were other articles about ballets where you changed the pointer to ballet as musical form, make appropriate corrections. If you desire to insist on your point, you could reword the intro in each of the Ballet articles and say, for example, Pulchinella is a ballet with music by Stravinsky (although I still don't think this is unnecessary in the intro, it could be expanded within the article, instead).
It's hard for me to agree with your changes to the articles about composers (with regard to ballet) either, and I intend to revisit this subject later. I am hoping someone knowledgeable will soon contribute to the ballet (music) article after it being a stub for 2 years. Don't hesitate to write me a note if you think there is more to discuss. - Introvert talk 08:45, 5 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for doing the AfD for Nikolay Volkov, I was going to do it myself, but I just wanted to make sure that the discussion was not still active. Most (if not all) of the votes to delete were conditional based on the articles being written in Arabic instead of English. As one of the articles was rewritten as a stub in English, I presumed the delete votes were invalid. Hi edit

I noticed your revert in Jewna article. I would be interested to find out what is known about her in Russian historiography. Could you share your thoughts about it? Does 'Jewna' mean something in Russian? I am very curious about everything regarding history of Lithuania. Could you respond in my talk page or in Jewna discussion page. I am interested to work on History of Lithuania articles in the future. Best Regards, Juraune 13:08, 7 August 2006 (UTC).Reply

Thank you very much for your sincere and comprehensive answer. It is interesting to see the original sources of Lithuanian history translated nicely by you to English. I would like to share my thoughts about the name of the Princess Jewna. I don't know how it was written in Cyrillic, but it is very likely, that her name could be written Jeuna in Latin, 'u'instead of 'w', and in that case every native speaker of Lithuanian will tell you that her name means "Young" ('Jauna', diphthongs 'au' and 'eu' in Lithuanian pronounciation are almost the same), and her youngest and favorite son Jewnut, in Lithuanian is 'Jaunutis', the ending '-utis' means both masculine and diminutive, gentle name. I do not say that Jewna was Lithuanian, but it is very likely that when Gediminas married her, she was called by the name "Young". In Lithuanian historiography her name is written "Jaunė", 'ė' is pronounced as Russian 'э' and it is a linguistic reconstruction by the scientists in that field. If it is of interest to you, what do you think about my explanation? Best wishes! Juraune 20:42, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! I have books available written in English and Lithuanian by acknowledged experts, I cannot hope to have a personal consultant in these matters in Lithuania, since these people are really busy in real life :) As to the meaning of the name as Eva or Eve, it is very likely, IMHO. She could have been Christened as a child by that name, but later... I am doing original research now, so I'll better finish. Best wishes! Juraune 14:17, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Eva or Eva in Lithuanian is Yva, translated means Willow tree

New cat edit

Hi, Vera! Thanks for giving me a nudge regarding this. I am generally not very good with categories, so I am trying to avoid them whenever possible.

I think the general idea is quite good. The only thing I don't like, as you probably suspected, is the category name. "Country subdivisions of Russia" is not a term we use anywhere. "(Lists of) [a]dministrative divisions of the federal subjects of Russia" would be more in line with the terminology, but it's kind of long and unwieldy. Still, it's the best I can come up with. Also, subdivisions of Russia shouldn't go into this cat, because it is already the main article of Category:Subdivisions of Russia.

If you have any further ideas regarding the cat name, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll rename the one you created and start populating it in the next few days.

Again, thanks for your help! Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:17, 22 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

You are, of course, absolutely right about omitting "the"—it's perfectly permissible to do so in headers, titles, and other places where space is at premium. Well, that's what my English grammar references tell me anyway :) I'll go with "administrative divisions of federal subjects of Russia". Omitting "administrative" is inadvisable because it is somewhat ambiguous—there are plenty of types of non-administrative divisions. I'll also add "subdivisions of Russia" as a see also link in the new cat.
One more time, thanks for your persistence and advice. See you around!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 13:18, 23 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
You make it sound as if I accused you of stealing credit or something :)) What I meant by "persistence" was not "занудство", but rather a motivation for me to further look at the category structure instead of thinking "I don't know how it works; to hell with it" :) Best wishes to you too, and I'm counting on seeing you around next time something like this surfaces!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 13:19, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
