Well I could have written "In this case, 'none' is used as a contraction of 'not one' [etc]", but I had a limited space.
But you're correct: I should've argued it properly. I just kind of made my original change as I was reading (habit, being a magazine subeditor) and then got a bit exasperated that it'd been undone.
