Toolserver database down

The whole toolserver is down for a little bit, until we can find someone with the expertise to fix a problem with the MySQL database. [1] --Interiot 16:02, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Apache was down momentarily for an unrelated issue (something about a bad auto-update debian package or something). But all throughout, MySQL has still been down. Decreasing Total Count

I spend a good portion of my time marking new posts for speedy deletion. Everytime an article is deleted my count decreases. Is there a way to calculate those edits to make for a more accurate count of edits? Mkdw 01:28, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

If the toolserver ever starts running again, my toolserver-based edit counter will tell you the number of total deleted edits you've made. Until then though, no, there's no way that I know of on-wiki to get any sort of deleted-edit count. There was some discussion about Yurik's query.php being able to do it, but he said it's not likely. Identifying copyright violations

Hi, Interiot! A few of us are working on identifying and deleting copyright violations by users with multiple such problems. To that end, would it be possible for you to prepare new articles reports for User:Jack Cox and User:Witkacy? See User:W.marsh/list for more context. Yeah, if I had the ability to do so, I'd gladly create lists of articles created by users with reoccurring copyright issues... I already do this for other wikis. Wannabe Kate counter

It already technically might require opt-in due to the "top 10" list of articles, and the monthly bars. But ze Germans gave me a reprieve when I made the tool only work for en.wikipedia.org. I suppose someone on enwiki could still potentially threaten to sue them over German law, but that hasn't happened yet. If it did, I'd probably try to find another host for it, since it's not tied to any given server. --Interiot 16:41, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

It consumes an average of 3mb from Wikipedia for each person, and some people's Special:Contributions dump takes over 20mb.

Well, what do you know, the algorithm that figures out what months to display has a comment "this is a fairly odd algorithm". I've put a bandaid over the issue, it should be working now. Thanks for the bug report. --Interiot 18:20, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Empty edits

I've noticed a lot of empty edits showing up on my watchlist lately. (eg. [6]) Just curious whether there's a purpose to these? --Interiot 03:13, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Not empty edits. Check carefully. I removed the same hyphen in all of them. They all had "wholly-owned subsidiary". I hate the hyphen with the -ly mistake. There were hundreds of them. So I just went through very quickly getting rid of them all. That's why I didn't leave an edit summary. It would have taken too long. Is there a way to automate this? I just got AutoWikiBrowser. So I'm studying that. I don't know much about bots. There are even more of the mistake, "publicly-owned". I don't know if I have the drive to get rid of all those. I recognize your account name. You're one of the biggies, so if you have any advice for me, I'd be glad to hear it. Such as: how can I find all -ly adverbs with a hyphen? Would love to get rid of that. It's sometimes the little mistakes like that that make Wikipedia look amateurish. I'd be grateful for any advice you have to give. Thanks. SDC 03:27, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Ranchero article

Hi. I've been a car nut for years and only just discovered the Rio Grande when searching eBay for a 1969 Ranchero. Knew about the 500 and the GT but never this one. Just bought a base Ranchero for practically nothing and I was out searching eBay for some goodies. There are presently three Rio Grandes for sale on the site. Edit counter

It might be useful to show articles that have a high percentage of edits by the person instead of just a high number of edits, to identify articles that demonstrate their writing well. You'd have to find a way for it not to return simple things like redirects that only one person has contributed to, though. — Omegatron 00:57, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

Probably possible. Sooner or later, hopefully someone will implement full history analysis for articles, and this would presumably be part of that. My current articles-created query takes a fair bit of time to run already though, I may not implement it soon. --Interiot 04:18, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

About your footer

I noticed you are having the same problem with your footer that I used to have with mine. That is, when posters click the "+" at the top of the page, it creates a new section below your footer, creating the need to move the footer back down there. Re: Adminship

I am sorry for not having answered before, I needed some time to think. Many had asked me to try to become an administrator, and I had refused because I did not feel like I needed the tools. As you have pointed, until a month ago I thought the same. However, you may be right. I am a WikiGnome, and that fact won't change, as an editor or sysop. As you know, we enjoy giving a hand here and there, fixing small things, improving others, but never staying too long in the same place. In a similar fashion, as an administrator I would help with backlogs, block repetitive vandals, protect some articles, and then continue with tasks that may not require these tools. I know you are not supposed to be an administrator 100% of your time. After all, this is an encyclopedia :-) But wanted to clarify that WikiGnomes rarely change, and thus I may disappoint some people who may expect me spending more time using administrator tools. -- ReyBrujo 12:39, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Well, what I can say... I am overwhelmed :-) I am used to work silently, and kind of evade recognition because I joined this project without looking for it. However, I just can't refuse to become "more useful" for the community, and if that implies becoming an administrator, it is worth trying. A question about your interface

You posted a "keymarks.js" file at the Virtual classroom. How do you operate such a script? Is that a user.js file? The Transhumanist 22:06, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

It's part of a custom Firefox extension that I need to release sooner or later. As I mentioned on the page, it mostly acts like the standard keymarks which anyone can use. In this case, I just add the ability for me to host the keymarks on a central server (so all of my computers get a consistent set of keymarks), and I can tweak the arguments of the keymarks a little bit (as I mentioned, allowing "w $page" to prune things like "blah blah [[link]] blah blah" down to just "link" (as well as changing "blah blah {{link}} blah blah" to "Template:Link").

You can install the .xpi here if you want, though it has no uninstall, it doesn't show up in your extension list for some reason, and it also needs to be reinstalled every time the browser version is upgraded. So it's not ready to be released yet. But really what it is is a server-side Greasemonkey... it can run ANY javascript that can makes the insides of Firefox do nearly anything, which makes it very useful for multiple installations of Firefox. If there's interest, I could see about releasing it sooner. I'm just not sure how many users there are who are willing to update their browser config by SSH (or otherwise update their configuration server-side (though... I suppose one might be able to use any MediaWiki installation to host .js files. Though in this case, they'd be used for off-wiki purposes as well, so it might not be so kosher)). --Interiot 22:17, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

What if you install the XPI, and it conflicts with something? How do you get rid of it?

I guess you could install the latest version of Firefox again, that would do it. But I've been intending to release it sooner or later, so I could do that instead if there's interest.

Normal keymarks that are built in to Firefox show up as bookmarks, in your bookmarks folder, except that the special "keyboard" box gets filled in [7]. My "server-side keymarks" don't show up in the local browser UI, they show up only in the server files. --Interiot 05:38, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

about the edit counter

I think I'm already using wannabe kate... this is the link to my edit count: [8] I think it's wannabe kate. It reports the links to only the first articles I edited, not to all of them. For example it doesn't show the link to other mainspace articles I edited later, or even to this talk page. However, the edit count is updated immediately after each edit. Edit counter

The better solution for edit-counting might be (barring integration with Wikimedia) to take an rc feed as AntiVandal-Bot does and once a user has been queried keep their counts updated. I could run a baseline of non-deleted edits at a given dump date, but it would be of limited use becasue of synchronisation issues. What do you think? Rich Farmbrough, 12:03 14 November 2006 (GMT).

1) at that point, you'd more or less have another toolserver. And while we do need either the existing toolserver to work, or a new one to be created, I don't have the skill to do it. And 2) I don't see the point in making a specialized toolserver that only does edit counts, because there are many other pretty important apps that run on the toolserver (probably more important than edit counting). --Interiot 12:53, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Additional help is always welcomed. As I said, we really do have a large number of tools that are very useful to run, and several are more important than the edit counter (for instance, commons has a tool that checks whether an image is used on any server before deleting a commons image. Since enwiki and other servers don't replicate to the toolserver, commons deleters have to check these servers by hand every time they delete an image... that's just one toolserver tool that's important to get working). So if you'd like to help, it really would be best to get the general database replication working. Working on only the edit counter would be working on a bandaid that will be discarded once the/a toolserver starts working again.

MySQL crashes when they import the static dump. I haven't heard whether they know why it might be crashing, but one would think that if it's the toolserver mysql that's crashing, that the problem is likely on the toolserver side. No, not really, I was asking about the main reason that replication stopped in the first place, which seemed to be because of the way the en wiki was set up. Perhaps it's worth talking to DaBpunkt as you suggest. Rich Farmbrough, 22:40 14 November 2006 (GMT).

Oh, that. Um, first it was an architecture change (multiple masters to replicate from, which MySQL doesn't do natively). But DaBpunkt hacked a way around that. His replication code was a little buggy at first, but we've fixed almost all the bugs we know about. Then the increasing number of edits by all wikis overwhelmed the disk I/O the toolserver has, so they stopped enwiki just so dewiki and all the others wouldn't indefinitely lag. They ordered a new RAID card, got someone to drive out to Amsterdam, found out it was incompatible. Ordered a second one, drove out there, got it installed okay. So replag was 100+ days by then, so they had to import a static dump rather than trying to replicate the whole way through 100 days, and last I heard they were having problems importing the dump. --Interiot 22:50, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Discussion request

I noticed your remarks on Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Discuss and Vote; I would appreciate it if you could take a look at WP:DDV, and indicate if it accurately represents the way Wikipedia works (and feel free to reword it if it doesn't). *grin* For a time, the user-installable javascript fix being discussed here allowed visitors to see "User talk:Jimbo" at the very top. The script actually replaces the text at the very top (eg. intended to fix more mundane cases like lowercasing, so it looked pretty startling to see Jimbo up there. Nonetheless, I have no ill intent, and the latest version of the code totally prevents this from happening (hopefully). Real title script

Hi Interiot. I really love your title fixing script. Do you think it would be possible to fix sub- and super-script titles as well? See for example T1 space. interiot edit-counter and UTC

Hello, it seems to me that the counter shows the user local time and not the UTC (as stated on the graphs). You can check it by watching the actual time (showing with a red line), and knowing your own editing-habits. Can you assure this and correct it? Misibacsi 20:54, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

It's not possible for the graph to show user local time, since the toolserver doesn't have access to user preference information, including their local time. All revision time information is stored in the database as UTC. --Interiot 20:57, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

There's not a way currently with any of my edit counters. I remember seeing it somewhere though... One of the tools listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject edit counters might do it. ImageCrop

Wow, that is looking good[12]. Ultimatly I would like to see something like ImageCrop put right into the mediawiki engine. It already uses convert from ImageMagick to reduce image sizes, cropping can be done with the same program.

I think that article about maps for one would benifit, showing a small portion blown up without having to create a special image. Images of insects, or animals, can have certain portions of the anatomy pointed out etc... There is little demand now, but invention is the mother of neccesity. HighInBC ^{(Need help? Well, I'll agree with you there. For instance, almost all of the images in commons:Category:Ocean topography are simply crops of Image:LARGE elevation.jpg (warning: you may not want to try to view that full-size). Yes and Image:Whole world - land and oceans 12000.jpg(also not one to load in your browser) is often used as a starting point to crop new images from. I am not worried about large files, they raised the limit from 5mb to 20mb becuase they could handle it. It does take a minute or so to get the reduced version, but after that it is cached. Hi - Per WP:HD#How to view annotation of an article? a user is looking for a way to find the edit that introduced a particular edit to an article. I generally do this by binary search of the article history. Seems like there's probably a way to do this with some funky javascript, which I could probably figure out how to do myself if I was sufficiently interested (but I'm not). Oh, come on, the javascript edit counter can't possibly be more complicated than finding the most recent edit to a particular article that added the string "foo". I could do it as a shell script, that anyone running Mac OS X or Linux could use, in an hour or two. I haven't done it because it really doesn't come up often enough to annoy me (and, most people run Windows and wouldn't have a frickin clue how to run a shell script). I think of you as "all about the tools", hence the pseudo challenge. If you really aren't interested enough to pursue this, that's actually fine with me. New feature on your edit counter?

I am totally not sure if this is the right time, or place, to ask you this, but it is worth a try. People, at least the people I know from Norwegian Wikipedia, has always been facinated on wich of their edits was number 1000, 2000, 3000 and so forth. This is possible, but difficult, to find out for the first 5000 edits from our contribution list on Wikipedia, but from 6000 and on it is near by impossible. I was hoping that you could add an option to your editcounter that showed what edits was my number 1000, 2000, 5000 and so forth. Changes in edit counter?

Something strange has happened to several users on nowiki, including myself. The numner of deleted edits has suddenly increased by several hundred, without any abnormal activity in the deletion log to explain it. In my case, I had 34980 edits on 16 November, and 35090 today, but my contribution list shows about 900 edits in that period, and my number of deleted edits has jumped by about the difference, aorund 800. Has there been any changes in the way the counter works, so that it has now picked up on more deleted edits? I'm sure there's a natural explanation for this, but several users have suddenly lost a great number of edits and are somewhat worried. Cnyborg 03:20, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Need help with a query

I am trying to find out how many Templates in the German Wiki have interwikilinks. So far I can only list those that have none (http://de.wikipedia.org/w/query.php?what=nolanglinks&nlnamespace=10). Is it possible to achieve what I want? Agathoclea 18:20, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not that experienced with blocking, so feel free to advise or adjust if you feel strongly. I didn't see anything that stood out to me that one sock was being used to circumvent policy beyond the copyvios, and it seemed like casual copyvios were happening on both accounts. I personally think sockpuppets have acceptable uses, and since I didn't see any evidence of other problems, I assumed the sock was behaving acceptably unless evidence turns up otherwise. --Interiot 12:48, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

I'll leave it up to you but typically I'll at least firmly encourage the use of {{User Alternate Acct}} and {{User Alt Acct Master}} at a minimum, esp. in cases where the user is engaging in improper behavior. It's not a big leap from copyvios to abusive sockpuppetry and no one will know to check for the sockpuppetry if a very public mention of the alternate accounts is not available. But I haven't examined this particular situation (I had counselled Nareklm in the past regarding his intial run-ins with copyvios but I figured he was past it - I was wrong) so it's your call. Laptop crashing

As a champion of Firefox, I wonder if you've an insight as to why my laptop might be essentially screeching to a halt on most any history page I try to look at. Specs line is: "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0". According to the monitoring, I have a great wireless connection and such, and in particular commons picture catgegories download almost without delay--maybe half a second more than my desktop using a hardwire link. Have the same dwadling response, though not as eggregious for my own contribs, but I believe that is simply due to a high present default limit -- 1000 or perhaps 2000 edits, iirc. The desktop slowsdown sameway for that; whereas for the histories, most never finish loading at all, at all, even given several minutes. I usually have to stop the page, and go back. Hrm, I'm not sure. Is the laptop totally freezing up / crashing? Or is it slowing way down?

• 1. If you have any Firefox extensions installed, can you try starting up Firefox in safe mode, and seeing if the problem still exists?
• 2. Try disabling javascript and seeing if the problem still happens.
• 3. Might the laptop be running out of RAM? Does Internet Explorer slow way down when you load the same page?

1. The page just seems to start loading, and keeps loading forever. I can alt-tab to other windows, and select other tabs, but that tab is essentially locked, save the mouse cursor will move around. The status bargraph (lower right corner) goes about half way and hangs, and if I'm trying to enter history from an edit preview window, a coupld of times I became concerned enough with the time delay, I tried to drag the new content and copy it into the cut buffer. It will let me highlight it with the mouse for an instant, but not let me C-c or C-x it into the buffer. Similarly, C-a, C-c/x fails to capture. Fortunately, stopping the new page load then restores the page to normal... but then I don't get the peek I want into history.
   1. Seems to me I recollect that I can go to a new tab and force it to history there, but not in an edit mode.
   2. In fact, I'm pretty certain the problem only manifests itself from within an edit screen, and operates fine outside one. (What does that tell us?)
2. Don't believe I have many extensions if any added. This is near virgin new build computer, and since wife was buying a new practice at the time I suggested she plan on taking it for the new office. (Was a BD present, but also not what I wanted. I'm going to try a MAC for christmas, as windoze has worn out it's welcome!)
   1. OTOH, I've two teens, and the one may have added a few search bars and such.
   2. I'll give it a try sometime sunday.

4. Don't think RAM would be the issue-- I recollect increasing the virtual memory setting, and RAM was 500 MEG, iirc. One time I definitely had it running sans anything else with a single tab, so it had all the resources outside the autoload processes.
5. Didn't try it with IE7, as IE7 was loosing edits on me right and left when I first assayed it's perils, so have only edited on it once since. It behaved itself that day, so perhaps my bug report via a MS employee got addressed, and the auto-update fixed that issue. I can but hope. I even put up a warning box on some of my user pages about it, and think I dropped you a note back then. (June/July timeframe)

Graphics Lab

I saw your name listed on Wikiproject Illustration or the list of graphic artists, and I thought I'd let you know that a Graphics Lab has been created on EN. Based on the highly successful French and German graphics labs, it seeks to better organise and coordinate our graphic design and photo-editing efforts. Up until now, there has been no common space on EN where users could ask for maps, charts and other SVG files to be created. What's more, the Graphics Lab has discussion boards, tips, tools and links; in sum, a good common workspace. Come help us out! Minor request for the wannabe tool...

I was wondering if you could add a section (possibly right beside the username) that stated when the stats were accessed. It hasn't been deleted, it's still at User:Gegelia/Tbilisi Youth City Assembly. After you created it in July, Kober moved the article to your user space [17] after noting that it needed some cleanup. [18]

Later, I noticed the redirect that was left behind from Tbilisi Youth City Assembly. Redirects such as these are discouraged except temporarily after moving a page to user space. The reason for this is that either the redirect is an potential legitimate article title – in which case it should not point to a user page because they are generally considered to be "owned" by that user, not freely editable by everyone as articles should be – or it is an inappropriate article title, in which case it shouldn't exist at all. Redirects to user pages may be speedy deleted at any time under the criteria for speedy deletion.

If the user page is intended to be an article, it can be moved back out of user space. However, note that once it's moved to article space, it's subject to more stringent article standards, and could be deleted. It's probably a good idea to do some cleanup on it beforehand, if it's going to be moved out of user space. Kober did a good job on your talk page of explaining what may need to be cleaned up, and why it could be deleted if it were moved out of user space. --Interiot 19:23, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Appropiate image tags

Hey, I've been emailing a few websites, and Armenianhighland.com lets you use there resources includes the pictures. Also armenica.org lets you use there images as long its for educational purposes and no sells etc. I'm wondering what would be the appropriate tag for these? Nareklm 20:30, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

The issue with armenica.org is the part about not allowing modification of the content. The GFDL (and all images posted here) are explicitly allowed to be modified, just as all the text is. So armenica.org content shouldn't be used here.

The Armenianhighland.com site is difficult to navigate... do you have a link to where they say that their material may be used?

If you're looking for things like maps, there may be other places to look for free versions of those. Off the top of my head, I'm not familiar with Armenian content, but this mentions a number of sources, some of which contain non-US maps as well. And Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps or Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Images to improve are places that you can request that maps be created. --Interiot 21:38, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes, but the very next paragraph says the "do not modify" part, so Armenica material can't be used here while that's still in place. Perhaps someone could contact them and let them know that it's important to Wikipedia that material be able to be modified (eg. so that captions can be translated into other languages, and for other reasons), and that maybe they could change their license. Most likely their license mentions that because they don't want people to remove their logo from the corner of the image, but unfortunately that hinders their use on Wikipedia as well. (Wikipedia has no problem whatsoever crediting people, it's an important part of the GFDL... but at the same time, we allow everyone who uses Wikipedia material to modify it). --Interiot 05:41, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

That's not the issue. The problem is that all material on wikipedia has to be compatible with the GFDL license (unless it's fair use). We make sure that all text and images on Wikipedia can be used and modified by other people. If it's not available under a compatible license, we can't use it.

As I said, they may just want to make sure they get credit for producing the image. If that's their main reason, then someone may be able to convince them to release their work under the GFDL license, because the GFDL makes sure they're given credit (not by keeping the watermark, but by noting in text beside the image). --Interiot 07:07, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

edit counter question

hi - great tool, thanks for sharing it. But... I have a question: down below, where it lists edits by category, it only seems to show main pages that have over 10 edits, and doesn't list all the ones that have fewer. Is this a bug or a feature? It lists the top 10 most edited pages in each namespace. It's... a stop-gap, I suppose. If the toolserver's database ever starts working again for enwiki, then wannabe_kate will almost certainly be shutdown, because it's very inefficient. At that point, you'll be able to use the Contribution Tree, which does what you're looking for and more. Until then, it's possible there's another edit counter that could output the data you're looking for... I don't specifically know of one though. I keep asking for one of the offline tools to be able to spit out a .csv file so people can do all sorts of analysis in Excel, but that hasn't happened yet. The back-end of the software is done, but it is difficult to spit out a CSV when some of the articles have commas within their titles. This spells out the syntax a bit (though I don't know whether it's standardized, and I remember Excel being far slipperier than it should be). I think you just wrap the cell value in single quotes, and then replace actual double-quotes inside the cell each with a pair of double quotes. This is one example output from Excel:

32.1,"He said ""What about Breakfast at Tiffany's""?"
33.3,"She said, ""I think I remember the film, and as I recall, I think, we both kind of liked it."""
34.5,"And I said, ""Well that's, the one thing we've got."""

Sounds good. Adding it to wannabe_kate might be useful short-term, but ultimately, fixed-IP scrapers have a good chance of getting blocked once(if) the toolserver comes back up. And the toolserver's database is just as slow as Wikipedia is at listing out every single detail of someone's contributions, so it can't do it either. Well, Flcelloguy's Tool can produce the CSV, but if it tried to do anything with it, it would run out of memory, because it keeps all the contributions it reads in its internal cache, so it can produce the edit counts and everything (which, admittedly, may not be the best idea, as doing a sequential read after all the contributions have been processed can save a lot of memory). An idea for your count tool...

You know, I just got a dandy idea for your edit count tool. Instead of doing a full count every time someone asks, maybe you could store on the disk previous requests for a user, and just update on each request. I'll bet this would really cut down on the time necessary to run the query, let alone help the server. At worst, it would be a little off because of deleted material, but, should dire accuracy be needed, there could be a "update" button, or something like that. Yeah, I keep thinking about that idea. You've got it right... it would be off a tiny bit for deleted edits (or maybe off by a lot if someone spends all their time tagging things with {{db}}), so it'd need some fine print and a purge cache button. *shrug* It kind of sucks though to have to spend time on an ostensibly "temporary" script that won't be used if the toolserver ever does come up. Spam fighting tool

I’d like to request a new spam-fighting tool... and I figured you were the guy to ask! (if not, feel free to laugh at me)

When researching complex long-term spam I find myself often searching though history logs looking for who/when a particular EL was introduced. When an article has 100s or 1000s of edits this can be quite difficult. I’d really like to be able to supply a string of text (the link) and have a program search the history for me.

I can see this being done in fairly short process.

1. Load the oldid list from the history into an array[].
2. Find the midway point, check for $string.

   If it’s there, we know it was added before, if not, it was added after.

3. Repeat the previous step using the midpoint and either the first/last edit, until the first oldid with $string is found.
4. Grab and dump oldid/diff link.

To prevent timeout, each cycle could be run and results could be printed separately.

There's a similar discussion above, which ended without me committing to do any work on it. :) Yeah, it's definitely feasible. I even heard a hint on IRC that there might be a .exe floating around that may do this already. So far though, I haven't gotten the urge up to write this tool myself yet... I'm still doing these by hand as well (it's O(log n), and as you said, n is usually a a couple hundred or a couple thousand, so it's doubtful there will be a point where it's not possible to do these by hand... Binary_search#Performance says it takes 13 checks to find a change among 5000 edits, so it's not as difficult as it may seem. If you change the history limit to show 5000 entries, it goes a little quicker. *shrug*). --Interiot 17:57, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
