monobook.js

I've noticed your mention of a javascript for softblocking or self-blocking using monobook.js. Can you tell me how this works and how to use it? I've tried testing it on my monobook.js and it doesn't seem to work, but I think I'm doing it wrong. Can you help? Neapolitan Sixth (talk) 15:16, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I was given the code and I placed it in someone else's monobook. I don't know if the code worked or not. I've been told that it sometimes doesn't. In this case, however, it's not been tested by the person I placed it upon. He's simply not even attempting to log in right now. My understanding is it simply hides the log in function, so you're rendered incapable of logging in. I may test it on myself, just to see if it works. LaraLove 15:52, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
OIC. You have to log out for it to work. I'd have to set a longer time for that to work and I didn't want to block myself for that long. Still doesn't seem to be that effective because you could just edit anonymously or just refresh and the login link is back. Thanks for replying! Neapolitan Sixth (talk) 20:20, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Are you aware of the wikibreak device? I'll leave a note on your talk. Enigma message 02:56, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Tee hee

That's another good editor I've fooled into thinking I'm an admin :D

Please, don't take this the wrong way, but I'd appreciate you removing me from your list of "community ban" participants. I just contributed to the RfC, is all. Hoping this produces a Δdrama < 0, SHEFFIELDSTEELTALK 20:09, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I can correct it to state that you're just an editor, but the point is to list those you participated in the AN discussion. Removing you would be inappropriate. It's not to state you've done anything wrong. I'm simply detailing the limited participation that took place in the blocking of this user. Your actions are not in question. Logo stuff

Hey, I thought you might be interested that your user page came up in a discussion regarding some minor improvements to the logo image, at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#New_logo. Also seen you around at administrators noticeboard and just wanted to say hi and give you a much-belated welcome. :-) Let me know if there's ever anything I can help out with, and happy editing. Dcoetzee 01:55, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Sorry

I just wanted to apologise for posting what amounted to an accusation against you on AN. I really didn't mean it to come out that way; I just wanted to try to encourage everyone to calm down. I had a vision of a whole bunch of admins I respect going out of control like a row of dominoes, and I wanted to try and stop it. Sorry I did such a poor job, and you caught the worst of it. SHEFFIELDSTEELTALK 02:59, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

It's fine. I'm actually pretty calm. Just incredibly disappointed at the complete ignorance of so many people. The wholly inappropriate statements that are allowed of editors. The total hypocrisy and irony is painful to witness. I've come to see so many flaws in this place in the past few weeks that I've been completely blind to for a year and a half. And it's sickening. RFA Thanks

Thanks for your support at my recent Request for adminship. It’s been my pleasure to work with you, too, and I hope to do so again. I hope you find I live up to your expectations. Best, Risker (talk) 14:08, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I deleted it and moved it to my talk page, per your comments on the MFD. I'm glad we could come to a compromise after you've been allowed by the community to label users as racist even after you are shown evidence that they are not, and then you bitching when I point it out. LaraLove 18:25, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Lara, despite what you may think, I have nothing against you, but you're letting your emotions destroy your Wikipedia career. You're cursing at people all over Wikipedia, making personal attacks, being grossly incivil (even if you don't agree with WP:CIVIL). I don't have anything against you, so I don't want to see you get in trouble for it, but if you don't calm down I'm worried that it might happen. I'm not going to comment further on your talk page, because I'm not here to antagonize you, just wanted to let you know that I think you should just let all of this go. SWATJester Son of the Defender 18:30, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
If you want her to calm down you may want to just walk away for a while and let her cool off. Continuing to "express concern" like this probably isn't helpful to that end, coming from you, the person who pissed her off in the first place (not that I'm making any judgment of fault). Equazcion /C 18:33, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

As long as the comments stand in the Arbitration case, I'm going to point out what the community has endorsed. I'm not removing the message from my talk page as I feel it's more important to let this ride out and give the community an opportunity to correct a grossly inappropriate accusation, or set a precedence that it's acceptable for one user to falsely accuse another of being a racist, but not acceptable for the falsely accused to voice their disgust. LaraLove 18:40, 16 May 2008 (UTC) Also note that this can also have a negative affect on Wikipedia as it gives right for users to label others based on the articles they edit. This may lead to a feeling that one cannot edit taboo articles, even to correct the NPOV, without risking being labeled inaccurately, and in a way that may damage their reputation. In that regard, this is not simply a personal attack, but rather a community endorsement that could negatively impact the encyclopedia. LaraLove 20:20, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I think it is how one edits taboo articles not the fact of editing them that is the critical factor, we desperately need people to edit taboo articles but in an NPOV, dispassionate way. Thanks, SqueakBox 20:36, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm a bit late to the party but I also offer you my support. You're not only not a racist, but you struggled against attitudes of pervasive racism throughout your life. The accusations are groundless and irrelevant, and I hope nothing like this will happen again. Dcoetzee 10:38, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you all!! I needed this. Sigh. I'm disgusted and baffled by the ignorance and hypocrisy that surrounds this situation, and it's very good to know that I'm not alone in viewing SWAT's comments as inappropriate. In that some still peg me as a racist, after I've clearly detailed that I am not, I'm just utterly floored. How awesomely stupid some people can be. LaraLove 08:20, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Here's some support from me too; you two are being railroaded over absolutely nothing but some vacuous accusation of thoughtcrime. What's worse than the accusations of racism is that they were done, not on their own empty merits, but solely in order to complain about an admin action, and then to deride anyone who defended said person or even their admin action; I believe that is in the "ad hominem" section in my book of logical fallacies. Keep up the good fight and don't let them get you down. :) --Golbez (talk) 18:36, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

As I mentioned at the noticeboard, I found Swat's bringing it up to be wildly inappropriate on two levels: 1)I don't even think it's true. 2)Even if it were, it's absolutely out of line to bring it up at ArbCom for an unrelated event. Enigma message 04:04, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Don't sweat it. That was the whole point. I knew when I made them it would make it to the communities attention. I for some reason thought it would go to AN or ANI rather than MFD, but I was a bit worked up and not thinking as clearly as possible. So it ended up where I wanted it anyway. To be honest, I gave up practical politics twenty years ago. It was physically exhausting trying to put forward a "live and let live" philosophy when I was part of a group of five, albeit enthusiastic, within a larger cohort of forty, all with entrenched and, of course, "entirely correct", points of view. Sometimes, it isn't worth the candle. I keep away from politics here partly for that reason, but also because there are other things to do; I have article projects to tackle; it would be good to get a Triple Crown as time permits. But I applaud your tenacity. Stick with it, Lara. While some editors are apparently heading to hell in a handcart, you stick with it, kiddo. I'm with you, and Chip. Much love, and kudos. --Rodhullandemu 20:21, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Thoughts from Lara, after some reflection

My deepest appreciation to everyone who supported me during all this, both on-wiki, in IRC and via e-mail. It's been a life lesson, to say the least. For all the ignorant people that continued to call me a racist after all that shit, it's a drop kick to the face from reality that I'm ignorant myself. Coming from white European ancestry, I have great pride in how this country came to be. Risking everything, traveling an ocean, building a democracy. Political and religious freedom. Unalienable rights. I had to sit down and really think about all this today. Because everything went so fast this week that I never stopped to think about any of it. I turned to one of my closest friends here and got a reality check after discussing it with a couple of my friends at work.

I think it's just a feeling I got as a kid, learning about the foundation of this country, an overwhelming sense of pride, knowing my ancestors had done this, and that feeling has never faded. Talking to my dad about this as a kid, sharing my excitement with this newfound knowledge, he said to me, "Sweet pea, that's white pride." So that's always stuck with me. When I talked about this with my friends at work, they were with me. So I guess it's just a matter of how we're raised here. Now, putting greater thought into it, my dad (who, for the record, I hate and have not spoken to for eight years now) is a white supremacist, which is not something I grew up knowing... you just don't realize this shit as a kid. To give him a shred of credit (not really), he hates everyone, including white people, pretty equally, but he's still totally racist. But he never identified as a white prider. So as I got older and learned what his views meant, as far as racism goes, that became pretty obvious. But still, for me, living in the south where I do, white pride != white supremacy.

So, anyway, in my reality check, I was told "Well, that's more like proud to be an American." But for me, that's more about being proud of what America is today. Not to say I'm not proud to be an American, but again, this is just sort of something that has stuck with me since my childhood that I never knew was perceived so totally different elsewhere, which is where my ignorance comes in. The totally ironic part being that I'm called a racist when a big part of my pride regards how awesome it is to live in such diversity. I married a German, I have an Italian best friend, a German best-wiki-friend, a Mexican best-work-friend. And my other friends include black, Jewish, Polish, Asian, Pacific Islander... and of various religions. It's really quite cool, in my opinion.

I never intended to offend anyone. I was just too blown away by being called a racist to stop and see why there was a double standard on pride and how so many people believed that pride could ever be supremacy. I do, however, stand by the fact that there are white priders that do not hold racist views. Perhaps the title is forever tarnished for being abused by racists, but there are people, like myself, that were raised to believe something different than much of the world apparently perceives. Poorly educated in regards to racism, I may be. But I'm not racist. LaraLove 07:08, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Well said SWATJester Son of the Defender 07:15, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Behind every Wiki User, there is a person, a person that has lived a life way different than yours. You usually can only judge the person by what they post on Wikipedia. Every person has different views. It is amazing at some of the stuff people have gone through, on and off wiki. I am thrilled to see you post this and am happy that you felt like you clarified yourself.
After re-reading, I am still trying to decide what I am trying to say. So I will leave it like this. =D <3 Tinkleheimer TALK!! 07:18, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Any race-based "pride" movement or ideology is "racist" by default. The use of "racial pride" rhetoric on the part of racial minorities is generally tolerated because they are usually not in a position to enforce or inflict power on other people. Different "ethnic culture" or country of origin-based "isms," when empowered, can be just as bad, but so long as "the given political system" allows for effective pluralism, they are considered relatively benign. All the race-based nationalist movements of the 20th century, including the Black Power movement, failed to the extent their proponents advocated for separatism as opposed to desegregation and racial integration, but it took the persistence of those movements for the US to begin to recognize the rights of its minorities as citizens the first place. "Racial pride" today is an artifact of these failed ideologies. It only seems benign when it is not empowered, in any case. Ameriquedialectics 21:08, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

It's called an IP sock, because you're obviously the IP of a registered user, but you're not making it clear who. So, basically, you're hiding. When you're ready to let me know who you are, then we can chat about how my insulting and partisan manner is somehow destructive, and then maybe we can discuss how I don't care. Your pink laralove theme is misleading but who I am right? That doesn't even make sense. First of all, I pick pink because it's my favorite color.
