Dear Imars edit

Imperial Knight Eberhard (Bernhar) Buob (Booe)

First let me say thank you for all your help with this page. You do great work and there is so much you know about editing that I will never know.

I am adding the requested sources but it will take me some time to do so as i must look into barns of paper work and books I have used over the paast 30 years, and when I say barns full it is many barns full. But I do not know how to link the source to each item as I have seen you have done on the page. I have tried and no go. I have added another link tonight to a book bot just listed it under sources.

I will add more every day as I can but as I said it will take some time to do so, My wife and I work with the church and have a lot going on there right now with TG and the 25th of Dec around the corner.

For now I will list these books under the source along with the area of the page where it should link and when I work out how to link it to the place in the page where it goes I will link it.

Again thanks for all your help. Ron Booe --Rvbooe (talk) 00:31, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dear Imars edit

(→The Crest and shield of Imperial Knight Eberhard (Bernhard) Buob (Booe): Booe could not have died defending Jerusalem. It was in Mamluk possesion since 10 year before his birth to the 1500s.)

True that the he was born 10 years after or more like 14 years after but per facts I have he along with others had returned and died fighting. The info I have says he was defending the wall, not Jerusalem. This could have been in any of many fights that took place after the fall. The info did not say he was fighting off Mamluk to keep them out of Jerusalem but to get in from all the info I have.

Thank you for your help and letting me know that I should re-word this. I just listed it as it was listed.

Thanks Ron--Rvbooe (talk) 03:19, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dear Imars edit

Please get in contact with me. My email you will find on the page you delete from WIKIPEDIA.

Thx,

Thorsten —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.174.122.111 (talk) 05:59, 21 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Thorsten, I did not delete any pages from Wikipedia. Are you talking about the link I removed? It would be easier to have a conversation if you created a user on Wikipedia. I am not about to reveal my real e-mail address to someone I do not know.

Thorsten. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.174.126.128 (talk) 14:39, 22 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Thorsten. It is quicker for me to formulate my answers in English. You can continue to answer in German. There are two reasons why I removed the link to your site. First, is the conflict of interest. You are linking to your own site. This is against Wikipedia's guidelines. See WP:EL#ADV. You are essentially using Wikipedia to generate traffic to your own site. Now I could not have known that for sure until you told me, but it was my assumption when I removed the link. Which comes to point 5 of WP:ELNO: "Links to web pages that primarily exist to sell products or services,..." OK, you do not have a huge amount of advertising, but the Branchen-Guide, Gastro-Guide, and Hotel-Guide imply that you are not doing this for free.
Servus! imars (talk) 20:40, 22 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Höchstädt edit

Give me 5 minutes to sort things. I'll explain then. Agathoclea (talk) 22:34, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

ok, now everything is where you wanted to have it. The problem was that you copied the content of Höchstädt to Höchstädt an der Donau. This created problems with copyright as part of the whole concept is that all the authors that have contributed to the article in question are referenced in the history. What you should have done was to use the "move" tab which moves the whole article to its new title - then the history would have moved with it. I accomplished this now by deleting and restoring sections and moving those around. Sometimes you might find it impossible to move certain articles then you should either ask an admin like myself if it is a simple clearcut move or if it is a little more controversial bring it up on WP:RM and follow the procedure there.
If you have made similar cut&paste moves in the past let me know so I can sort them out as well.
Hope this makes things a little clearer. BTW moving the page now means that all articles that have linked to Höchstädt have to be changed to [[Höchstädt an der Donau|Höchstädt]]. I have done the most important one - the district template. Agathoclea (talk) 22:46, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
BTW should you be using WP:POPUPS it becomes very easy to update links that go to a disambiguation page. As you hover over them it will give you all the options you can select. And when you click on one it will make the edit for you. Agathoclea (talk) 22:54, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
It takes quite a while for template changes to filter through. I think at the moment the queue is in the matter of days. Just check back next week to see if all is ok Agathoclea (talk) 09:48, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nitra Cathedral / St. Emmeram's Cathedral, Nitra edit

Happy to leave you the last word on the talk page! but a couple of suppl points: (a) I have updated the redirects; those remaining are all dependent on the Template, and may take a few days to come through. (b) Also, are you in general OK from now on with either or both the formats "St. X's Cathedral, Y-town" and "Y-town Cathedral", as there are quite a few other articles that I intend to move to one or the other of these formats and it would be quicker to have any further discussion once here rather than several times on different talk pages! HeartofaDog (talk) 15:22, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I don't want to bore you with this, and I understand that cathedrals per se are not your thing, but would you be happy with Nitra Cathedral as a title? I much prefer that format myself, but on comparable articles people have objected to losing the dedication from the title, so I tend not to remove it.HeartofaDog (talk) 17:43, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: Changes made with AWB edit

It isn't complicated. When it comes to higher-level flowering plant taxonomy, all botanists now follow the APG-II system (with the odd tweak to reflect recent findings). I'm bringing our taxoboxes into line with that. It is years overdue. Hesperian 09:52, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mount Nokogiri (Chiba) edit

Thanks for fixing this up; I was completing a link, but it isn't really my area of expertise. Moonraker12 (talk) 16:31, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

So there’s another one? Ha! This is like picking a thread and ending up unravelling your sleeve! I’ve just followed it up via google map and the Mount Kaikoma page, but I see you’ve fixed it already. I wonder how many more there are! Good luck, anyway, Moonraker12 (talk) 10:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
PS Just a question: the google map link shows the Akaishi mountain with the same characters as the Chiba one; would this make the name Nokogiri-yama, not -dake? Moonraker12 (talk) 11:05, 20 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
That is weird. Oh, well...Moonraker12 (talk) 15:16, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mount O edit

Hi Imars, Thanks for starting the article Mount O (among many others). I wonder if we can find a better title for this article, and I hope you'll join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Japan#Mount O. It may turn out that this is the best title but I'm hopeful we can do better. Best regards, Fg2 (talk) 10:28, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

www.ishigaki-japan.com Spam? edit

Hi there,

I noticed that the link I'd placed for www.ishigaki-japan.com had been removed from the Ishigaki, Okinawa article. Although I am the creator of the site I currently make no money from it, plus, it's probably the best English guide to the island at the moment (I am a British guy who lives on the island and I'm documenting as much of it as possible). For these reasons I can't imagine why it's been classified as spam.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated,

Regards, Richard —Preceding unsigned comment added by RichardInJapan (talkcontribs) 03:24, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the response edit

Thanks for responding. You've clearly taken the time to take a good look at my site, and I appreciate that. Although we could go on arguing about this forever I'd like to respond to a few points. With respect to the site being my own, yes, I can see how this may be problematic, but you were unaware of this when you removed it - I provided this information freely later.

It is true that I was not sure that you were the site owner, but I already had a good idea. Your user name indicates you live in Japan, at the point where I intervened you had made exactly two edits to Ishigaki and Okinawa, and finally the only edits you had made were to add a single external link to what turned out to be your website. This was a strong indication that you had some interest in the site in question. I figured you were some JET or other expat now living in the area.

Secondly, the original research bit interests me. Surely any references which I make on my site would eventually resolve to original research at some point, plus, given that I'm providing information which is currently very scarce or non-existent, such references are difficult to obtain. The Ishigaki City council's website is included as an external link, and I don't see any external references on their site (I actually had a meeting with them tonight, at their request, regarding a collaboration).

External sites do not have to provide references, Wikipedia articles should. There is no issue with the Ishigaki City site, because it is considered an authoritative source. If I wanted to confirm who the current mayor of Ishigaki is, or if a newspaper reporter wanted to do that, he or she would certainly turn to that website, because the city is considered an authority on the subject of Ishigaki. Your website certainly appears to be genuine and I am sure it includes accurate information, but if someone from the New York Times wanted to write an article on Ishigaki they would have to confirm the source. How would they know you hadn't snuck pictures of Guam into your site and labelled them as Ishigaki. Now if some independent authoritative source referred to your website, such as a newspaper and they claimed that you were an authoritative source on Ishigaki and you can provide a reference to that newspaper, you would have more room to maneuver. Then one would assume that this source had vetted your site. But you cannot make this claim yourself.
Now about original research, Wikipedia is meant to be an encyclopedia. It should not be used to further my claims that the world is not round, but donut-shaped (unless I can provide verifiable authoritative sources). Nor should you add content to the Ishikagi topic in Wikipedia, like "I found a great coffee bar in Ishigaki." First it is not a neutral comment. (See WP:NPOV.) Second, it is not verifiable. (See WP:VERIFY.) Third, it was your own research. (See WP:OR.)

Yes, I'm hoping to sell advertising space, however, given the fact that Ishigaki isn't very well know, revenues are likely to be very limited and certainly won't cover the time which I've put it (although that's difficult to cost). Surely there are other external links which earn money through advertising revenues.

I was actually unaware of the fact that the criteria for external links was lower than that for the main content, although it does make sense.

Overally I'm attempting to produce a definitive guide to the island of Ishigaki and Yaeyama, and many people would agree that it's already the prime English resource for sight-seeing information. I've spent a hell of a lot of time on the photography in order to allow users to make up their own minds about the sites which I'm describing. I've also endeavoured to be as unbiased as possible with the descriptions. Yes, it's in my interests for the site to be linked to from Wiki, but it's also in the interests of wiki users who have arrived at the page though a desire to learn more about the island.

Yes, I may end up making some money from the site, but it's unlikely. My main motivation for bulding it is to introduce this beautiful island which I live on to the rest of the English-speaking world, and a little help from wiki would be very much appreicated.

I understand your plight, and I agree the amount of money involved will probably never cover the blood, sweat and tears you put into your site. Unfortunately, the amount of money is irrelevant; it is the principal. Wikipedia is meant to be an encyclopedia and not a marketing vehicle. As I indicated above, if your site does become an independently recognized authority on the island, then the situation would be different. If your town newspaper printed an article about the site, or if it appeared in the Japan Times or even the Yomiyuri, I would be more inclined to be lenient. The question of intent is also there. You could also upload your photos onto Wikicommons and make them freely available to everyone. You can expand the articles on Ishigaki and Okinawa.

Regards,

Hi Richard, I made some comments above. Like I said, if you do not like my answers you can bring it up on the talk page of the respective articles or if you want, we can raise the issue on the Talk page for the WikiProject Japan. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Japan. I am trying to be helpful and not a jerk. It doesn't always appear that way, much to my chagrin. imars (talk) 06:16, 15 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Prince-Archbishopric edit

Hi you, sorry for the Archbishop. I only saw the Elector missing, after your cleared it, so I recopied - from my copy - the complete entry I used before with the Elector-… prefix, which was missing to give the uniform appearance of the three Elector-Archbishops, as seen without the hidden formatting. I was not aware, that you were bothered about the hidden formatting Mentz and so I did not worry about my copies, showing Mentz. Ulf Heinsohn (talk) 15:34, 22 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

External links edit

I wasn't aware that there was policy that said that external links had to be to fully-verified sites. It's true that WP:External links does recommend against other open wikis (the irony there I will pass over), but I think an exception is warranted because there's so little English-language material on the web on that topic. I thought that site contained a lot of likely-correct interesting/useful material which wasn't in the article here. If you would care to research, verify and add all the encyclopedic material from there to the Wikipedia article, there would of course be no use for the external link, but failing that, it provides useful information which isn't in the Wikipedia article, so please put the link back if you aren't prepared to put in the work to add the more relevant general material to the article. Noel (talk) 20:32, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The irony is good and I appreciate it. There is no way of proving that the information is useful or correct. There are no sources. There is little indication even who created the content; Rhymeswith711, who is user CB in the site's forums. Nor is there even a lot of information about who is behind the site other than a bunch of JETs from Chiba. Having been a JET, I would not rate this a particularly trustworthy source. This link definitely falls under point 4 of WP:ELMAYBE. I am willing to discuss the issue. You could add the link to WikiTravel. imars (talk) 07:09, 21 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, I've got better things to do with my time than argue about this. In the meantime, this link may amuse you - or not. Noel (talk) 16:55, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Whether or not you intend it, you come across as rather abrasive; nevermind implying that your time is much more valuable than mine. Perhaps I am being oversensitive. I agree that external links do not need to be held up to the same standard as citations. Perhaps I was being too hasty in removing the link. I suppose I will consider the problem on my own and come to my own decision in my own time. A constructive dialog might have been more useful. imars (talk) 13:33, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Changing flags edit

Hi Imars, I have commented on your recent comments re changing flags on my talk page. Rossmwilson (talk) 16:02, 18 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Imars, thank you for your response on my talk page. I have always regarded the situation with the constituent nations of the UK as being something of a special case, as the UK and how it came into existence is somewhat unique. Most of us would probably, when asked directly, define ourselves as English / Scottish / Welsh / Irish, rather than British (of course there are always exceptions), whereas most people from California would probably describe themselves as American rather than Californian. I do, however, take your point about the level of granularity relating to national / subnational flags, and I understand your point about the Germans in particular. I have some friends from Oberfranken and also some from the Allgäu, and am aware of the distinction some people apply to themselves even within Bavaria. Many thanks for your advice on where I can discuss the matter further. Rossmwilson (talk) 17:00, 20 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
