Ivor Novello edit

Hi. I understand your edit about Novello's birth name, and you are certainly correct, but it is clearer to refer to him as Novello throughout. It is crystal clear that, as a child, he must have performed under his birth name. The references to the book are very helpful. Obviously, the Novello article could use considerable expansion, so if you have the resources, feel free to go ahead and fill out his biography. For a good example of a more complete biography, see Noel Coward. All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 00:09, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the new info. One minor technical thought: the reference goes after the punctuation, like this: Novello was nine feet tall.<ref>footnote</ref> There are some rather surprising things in the WP:Manual of Style, so look thru the MOS when you have a moment. Of course, for a british person like Novello, spelling, etc. should be UK spelling (unless it's in a quote). Question for you: You wrote: "For the UK tax year 1943-44, Novello had paid £19,948 income tax from his £35,400 earnings". What does this have to do with the imprisonment, or anything else? Happy editing! -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:29, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hi. The amount of income tax paid by Ivor Novello demonstrates that he was not a parasite on the war economy, which was the implication in a fuel rationing offence. IAC-62 (talk) 23:37, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

RfC at Robert E. Lee edit

As a recent contributor to Talk:Robert E. Lee, you are receiving this notice for an RfC at of a proposed restatement of a wp:primary source which contains more points than the existing block quote from the letter. The primary source is a 1856 letter of Lee’s to his wife from Texas as found at Alexander Long, Memoirs of Robert E. Lee: his military and personal history (1886), p. 82-83. Opponents have seen wp:original research in the proposal as drawing conclusions not found in the primary source. A rewrite of the first proposal follows an edit break. Battle of the Beaufort (1982) edit

I'm sorry, I don't understand what this means: "Mordechai Goldman... invalided out of the army after being wounded".

Could you clarify it? Jokkmokks-Goran (talk) 00:56, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

The article says he was wounded by Syrian artillery outside Beirut, after the Beaufort action, and later invalided out as unfit for army service. IAC-62 (talk) 17:15, 7 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

A very old edit edit

Hi, I see you're looking back to see what I did many months ago; I hope you're not taking my (quite gentle) comment too hard. I guess you've noted that I made many edits, and that the article went from the jaws of deletion to properly-structured, fully-cited, and distinctly more defensible. Actually there was a full-blown deletionist campaign against the entire project, and hundreds of articles vanished for ever. I brought at least 50 articles from AfD-ready to GA in the course of six months, removing a large amount of fan-material and original research, and adding whole new sections of scholarly analysis with many hundreds of citations. A whole shelf of learned books. I'm afraid that if in the midst of such an event, one uncited but actually verifiable claim gets the chop, it's hardly surprising. Nice that we now have the leisure to chat about single edits in detail. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:23, 18 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

I prefer the nazgul article as it was. It is now too long and much of it retelling the story. I don't much like many of the Tolkien experts who make careers out of the books, and the ideas of such are now presented as authoritative. Your own editing style is at times dismissive and even somewhat arrogant, as with your deletion of Gaelic nazc as 'nonsense'. Tolkien was aware of nazc and ghoul, as he said in the work I quoted. He appeared to dislike it, as he hadn't consciously intended it. The possible, just, Gaelic derivation of admiral, as compared to the arabic standard was also dismissed; years ago, haven't been back to look.IAC-62 (talk) 19:11, 18 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
