RFPERM Archiving

Hi Hydro, sorry for taking so long to get back to you on this. I've just run the bot through the autopatrolled candidates for approval pages (I went through pages 9 to 36). You can see the archival edits here, here and here. You can see the bot's report here (the report is probably the only readable thing here ;D). As you can see at the report, there were a few errors (kinda unavoidable when running though 776 requests  ). The most "serious" errors were the bot skipped two pages due to undated requests at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled candidates 23 and Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled candidates 24 (the reason the bot has linked to Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled for all the errors is because I had to "fake" the article titles to get it to link to there on the archive pages). This is fairly simple to fix though: It is simply a matter of dating those requests and getting the bot to run through those two pages again (alternatively I can make the bot not look for dates, since it's not actually using them anyway). Less serious, but more difficult to fix are the requests marked as   Not done but where the user has the permission. I'm not sure if you actually want these archived anyway, since it's not really relevant for what you're doing (you won't be looking at users who have the permission anyway, so it won't matter when filtering out candidates if they have been denied previously). Please let me know if everything else looks okay or not asap, as I am holding off on the normal archiving for awhile to make it easier to undo the bot's edits if there is a problem. Cheers, - Kingpin13 (talk) 21:25, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

New Pages and New Users

I've recently been doing some thinking (and a great deal of consultation with Philippe and James at the WMF's community department) on how to keep new users around and participating, particularly in light of Sue's March update. One of the things we'd like to test is whether the reception they get when they make their first article is key. In a lot of cases, people don't stay around; their article is deleted and that's that. By the time any contact is made, in other words, it's often too late.

What we're thinking of doing is running a project to gather data on if this occurs, how often it occurs, and so on, and in the mean time try to save as many pages (and new contributors) as possible. Basically, involved users would go through the deletion logs and through Special:NewPages looking for new articles which are at risk of being deleted, but could have something made of them - in other words, non-notable pages that are potentially notable, or spammy pages that could be rewritten in more neutral language. This would be entirely based on the judgment of the user reviewing pages - no finnicky CSD standards. These pages would be incubated instead of deleted, and the creator contacted and shepherded through how to turn the article into something useful. If they respond and it goes well, we have a decent article and maybe a new long-term editor. If they don't respond, the draft can be deleted after a certain period of time.

I know this isn't necessarily your standard fare, but with your new pages and autopatrolled work I thought it might be up your alley. If you're interested, read Wikipedia:Wiki Guides/New pages, sign up and get involved; questions can be dropped on the talkpage or directed at me. Thanks, Ironholds (talk) 21:09, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

WebCite bot

I have made a request at WP:BTR#AntiLinkrotBot. I don't really expect this to go anywhere, but I think a try does not harm. There can't really happen anything more seariously than just the rejection of this proposal, so I thought I simply give it another try and wait for the reactions it triggers. Just thought I let you should know. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 16:36, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

My comments haven't seemed to generate any response. I'm disillusioned that the community doesn't care more about this issue. I'll keep thinking about what we should do until we get some type of solution in place. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 00:45, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

And thanks for your support and thoughtful comments. Now we can get back to fixing citation caching :) – SJ + 23:26, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Citation caching

Brian Mingus reports he has 2 people working on WikiScholar this summer, and there is some interest from a Digital Public Library of America to support similar work, which could serve as a larger-scope umbrella service to capture and preserve citations on WP and elsewhere. This is in parallel to what we should test now on en:wp, but could push out the questions about neutrality and single-service-provider [for the caching service] to a Project with its own contributors and monitors.

Be well, – SJ + 23:26, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

That is great news. WikiScholar is a really ambitious project that will require a lot of work, but I think it is exactly what we need for all our projects that use citaions/references/etc. Thanks very much for the heads up.
In related news, Pmartin has started archiving WP citations recently. Oh, and congrats on your re-election (I'm sure you can guess who I voted for). Best regards. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 23:51, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

I don't now much of this yet,I did notice everyone on that chart at or below 82% wasn't promoted and people 83% and up were. I think I read the "bar" is 90%. Seems to have defacto dropped and/or have a discretion zone. PumpkinSky talk 20:34, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
Sorry for the late response. Yes, there does seem to a discretionary zone and the 90% bar is more of a "safe zone" than a hard threshold. Looking at the stats that RL0919 has posted to the talk page has been enlightening for me. I guess my impression of RfB is a bit different than the reality, so I'm happy for the info. Star Gazers... New October Episodes

Hydroxium:

Great to hear from you! I've been doing fine. Since last talking to you, I've started a new job... I've been really busy with that. Just for the record, I wasn't intending to beat you with regard to the "Star Gazers" article; but, I am glad that you were pleased with what I added. I didn't see your message until after I had added the new October episodes to the list early this morning. I'm not sure what the show is planning to do with the new website; but so far, they haven't added any real information to it yet. They do have a You Tube Channel; and, that is where I obtained the new episode titles. SDPB was suppose to have aired one of the new episodes tonight; but, it was pre-empted by Ken Burns' "Prohibition" (so, it will probably air late Saturday night and early Sunday morning here). I really like the old "Star Gazer" website (with all of the scripts and downloadable episodes, etc.). I am really hoping that they keep all of that with the new website (but, there are probably no guarantees). I don't know whether or not you have seen any of the new episodes yet; but, there have been some format changes. I'm definitely going to miss the old theme music, which is now gone. On the other hand, Jack Horkheimer had been gone for more than a year; and, the show was overdue for some sort of changes (especially removing Jack Horkheimer's face and name from the opening sequence). Anyway, it was great hearing from you again. Brianhass (talk) 06:55, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Brian. Sorry for the late reply. I hope your new job is going well. Unfortunately my public TV station doesn't air the program regularly, so I haven't seen any new episodes yet and I'm on a 28.8k dialup, so I can't watch the show on YouTube. Oh well. I agree, the old stargazers website is a treasure of information and a great tribute to Jack Horkheimer. I hope they keep the original web site or add it to the new site. I didn't know the music was changed. I really like the original music and it always reminded me of looking at the stars. I do think it was time for a change, but I wouldn't mind if they said something about Jack Horkhiemer in the credits or something. Anyhoo, I want to thank you for keeping the article up-to-date and stuff. Best regards. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 03:20, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Hi Hydroxium. If Star Gazers does drop the old website (and all of its content), the good news is that a lot of that is still available on http://archive.org (they archive a lot of things and have old websites in their Wayback Machine). Still, it would be a shame if they did abandon the old website format. For a TV show's website, I think the one for Jack Horkheimer's "Star Gazer" show was the best. As far as the new theme song on "Star Gazers," it's not particularly distinctive (in my opinion) and reminds me of a lot of those themes that you hear for educational/instructional programs.... kind of bland. The "Star Gazer" website said that the number one question asked was about the show's theme song. Well, I guarantee few will care enough to ask about the new theme song. I'll miss the old theme.... but, I suppose Johnny Carson took his theme song with him when he left "the Tonight Show." I suppose it's appropriate that Jack Horkheimer takes his theme song with him, too. As far as the broadcast of "Star Gazers," I'll admit that it is kind of hit and miss on SDPB in South Dakota. The first episode of "Star Gazers" was aired only once at 3:55am on Sunday morning. There was a time when Jack Horkheimer's show ran virtually every night; but, that was years ago. I agree, it would be nice if there was a reference to Jack Horkheimer in the credits... something like "Based on 'Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer'" or "Based on the Series Created by Jack Horkheimer"... but as far as I can see, there is no such reference. I hope you'll also keep the "Star Gazers" article up to date whenever possible. I'll add my contributions whenever time permits. By the way, the job is going pretty well. Keep looking up!Brianhass (talk) 10:37, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
Same on my public TV station, they used to air the show several times each day. Now I'm lucky if they show it ince a month. Oh well, seeing it once a month is better than nothing. I have a few things I want to add to the article. I just need to get around to doing it. Thanks again for all your help. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 18:11, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Happy Thanksgiving, Hydroxonium!
As we all sit down at the dinner table and say our thanks today, I would like to give thanks to you for your wonderful contributions and wish you a very happy Thanksgiving. May your turkey, ham or beast of choice satiate you until next year!TRA! Buster Seven Talk 17:03, 22 November 2011 (UTC)}

Welcomes

FYI. I have added your welcome to a flock I have collected (and use) at User:Buster7/Welcomes. I see that you are active at welcoming new editors and support your endeavors. Your example makes me want to return to welcoming. Are you free-lancing? I ask because that is the method I prefer. While I supported the WP:WikiGuides project, I found all the record keeping and reporting tedious. I know they were necessary for result tracking and WP Foundation use, but it caused me to lose interest. How do you choose your newbies? From the recent changes page? Lets chat. TRA! Buster Seven Talk 17:57, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks B7. Yep, I'm free-lancing. Funny you should mention WikiGuides because it was my memory of your work there that helped inspire me to welcome new users. I find the new users through the Feedback dashboard—where new users leave comments. I added {{User feedback responder}} to my userpage and it has a link to Special:FeedbackDashboard on it. It's part of the WP:New editor feedback project. We are supposed to follow certain steps, but I haven't been following it very well. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 23:25, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Feedback Dashboard upgrade

Hi Hydroxonium,

Thanks for signing up for the Feedback Dashboard response team! I wanted to let you know that the tool just got an important update (see here for details). I also wanted to invite you to the IRC office hours session that Steven and I are going to hold this Sunday, December 4. Hope you can make it and share your experience/questions with us! Thanks again, Maryana (WMF) (talk) 23:52, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up, Maryana. I've just replied to the update at the Village pump. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 23:59, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

RFA thank you

Thank you for your comment and support at my recent successful RFA. Being now the new fellow in the fraternity of administrators, I will do my best to live up to the confidence shown in me by others, will move slowly and carefully when using the mop, will seek input from others before any action of which I might be unsure, and will try not to break anything beyond repair. Best, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 22:08, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

You are most welcome. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 03:15, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Your opinion is requested.

Hello again, Hydrox! Would you please go here and give your opinion? I feel like I'm being attacked by someone who has nothing better to do. Thanks! — WylieCoyote (talk) 09:48, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

I've commented at that page. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 00:28, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Interesting

Was interested in your helpful comments re Fair Use images on User:CAWylie's talk page. You know, I celebrate 10 years on Wiki this month, but deliberately steer clear of the images minefield. Still puzzles me how we use an album cover image from Amazon whose website clearly states people may not "download......any portion of it, except with express written consent of Amazon" but the licensing makes no mention of consent. Is there a blanket permission letter/communication somewhere? Moriori (talk) 03:10, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Congratulations on 10 years, Moriori. Thanks for your dedication to the project. Regarding images from Amazon, I am not aware of any consent that Amazon has given us to use images from that site. So it's probably best to remove those images from our site. In fact, I'm guilty of using an image from there. I'll have to fix that. Thanks for the heads up. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 01:06, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Your help is requested (again)

Hello again, Hydrox! Would you please go here and review my last article, at least remove the tag there? It's been around for most of the week and no looky-loos. Thanks! — WylieCoyote (talk) 02:25, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

No rush. Take your time. Editing is time consuming and we both have RL's. Sometimes its best to keep things under wraps until they are ready for the marketplace. TRA!Buster Seven Talk 05:49, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
Will do. Thanks for the reminder. All the best. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 01:00, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Batman signal

I suppose one way to find situations would be via the recent changes. And if one of us finds something, we leave a "crumb of bread" in the edit summary since we watchlist each other. I'll give it a whirl and see what comes up. TRA! Buster Seven Talk 05:07, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

That sounds like a great idea. TRA! - Hydroxonium (TCV) 00:39, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback dashboard. I think it's the best way to find new editors that are at least reaching out...they do'nt know where...but they're reaching out. Mostly, I'm welcoming the editors w/ redlinked talk. I first check their contributions to see if they are serious...no sense wasting time on scoundrels and whipper-snappers! I'm using a Seasonal Greetings one w/ a link to The Welcoming Committee's Wikipedia:A Primer for newcomers page. Also, I just found Wikipedia:A Primer for newcomers after giving User:Schmidt congrats!. A great resource. BTW...Happy Holidays to you and yours. TRA! Buster Seven Talk 15:54, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
I'm probably not following the right procedure at the dashboard. How does one show that a response has been made? Grrrrr! These new gadgets! Bring back Morse Code!Buster Seven Talk 16:00, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I think the users reaching out are the ones that would respond best to help. I have found some promising users with the feedback dashboard. Yes, MQS's Primer for newcomers is excellent. But it's a long read for some new users. I found it shortly after signing up, but didn't actually read it all until several months later. I too, am not following the proper procedure for using the Feedback Dashboard. If you click the Respond to this link, it is supposed to mark them as responded. But its a javascript feature and I don't have javascript, so it does nothing when I click it. The WMF folks developing this feature are hanging out at Wikipedia talk:New editor feedback to get feedback on this feature. Several others using the feedback dashboard are also there giving their input there. Best regards. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 02:15, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

Hydrox's Dashboard

Hope you don't mind but I was roaming around your backyard and noticed the Hydrox/Dashboard page in the garage. Where can I get one of those? It looks like just the thing Ive been looking for to clean-up my backyard. Do the sell them at Harrods? TRA! Buster Seven Talk 19:08, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

I don't mind at all. Though I put it there so I could keep track of goings-on, I also encourage others to use it so they can see what's going on. I cobbled it together from other things. You're more than welcome to copy it if you like. TRA! - Hydroxonium (TCV) 02:42, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Assistance with User Jayjg

Hi, I'm going to take you up on your offer and ask for your assistance. I'm having a tough time dealing with User:Jayjg here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Cincinatis#Jewish

He has vowed to prevent me from engaging in anti-semitism:

"Finally, if you continue to yellow badge these individuals, you will almost certainly be blocked."

Which is not what I am doing. He refers to inserting the fact that an individual is Jewish in their Wikipedia biography as anti-semitism.

I have tried to explain my position, but he constantly ignores me, repeats false allegations, and is generally uncooperative and bellicose.

He has stated that according to WP:BLP:

"To prove relevance, you must provide multiple, reliable, secondary sources that state something (such as being Jewish) is relevant to an individual's career or notability, not just your personal view that it's really, really, really important."

But the only thing the actual text in the WP:BLPCAT states is that:

Categories regarding religious beliefs or sexual orientation should not be used unless the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief or orientation in question, and the subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant to their public life or notability, according to reliable published sources.

By this criteria, their religious affiliation can be mentioned if I can show with reliable sources it is "relevant to their public life or notability" (not "career or notability"), and "the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief", and their ethnicity can be mentioned without any requirement of showing its relevance to their public life or notability.

In his further response, he did not address this point, and basically just repeated what he had written earlier. I think I am at an impasse as I want to include mention of an individual's Jewish ethnicity in their biography, and believe that User:Jayjg will reject any attempt to do so (I believe he will do this because he's given changing reasons for why the content I've inserted is unacceptable and has accused me of anti-semitism), and I can't engage in a constructive discussion with him to identify and address his concerns with the content. --Cincinatis (talk) 02:03, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Cincinatis. I help where I can. I'll join the conversation at your talk page. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 02:37, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

...and I often lose my connection (like just now), which means I have to spend another 10 to 20 minutes trying to dial-in and getting ring-no-answer. But I'm not complaing because it's free. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 01:34, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

ARC

I once knew an editor that said he was limited in how he expressed himself. But it seemed to me that every time I read anything he wrote it always was just the right thing, said just the right way, at just the right moment. Well said at ARC. Im sure after the firestorm is over and the embers die down, there will be the beginning of a re-newed Civility conversation. Make sure you take a seat at the table.
