About Pmgomez edit

Just thought you'd be interested to know...after I made my comments on the Images for Deletion for the tagged Xavier School photos, Pmgomez began looking at my contributions and started looking for one of my articles which he later edited with rather unusual gusto. I won't contest the edits for now (I'll be working to improve the article), but I'm on my watch. --- Tito Pao 07:53, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think the edits weren't that bad. Everybody does that, even me :evilsmiley: --Howard the Duck 12:13, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
You've got a point. Accordingly, I edited the articles. Btw, I'd also want your advise on archiving talk pages...how long is long, and in your opinion when is the right time to archive discussions? This is for a talk page on one of the articles on my watch list that is getting longer and longer...I'm not sure if it's the right time to archive the discussions or if I should wait a little bit more. --- Tito Pao 15:04, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
For usertalk pages, once it has a notice like "this page is ## kb" I archive it already. As for article talk pages, the safest thing to do is to archive non-existent discussions. --Howard the Duck 15:11, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Torch relay edit

First they are separate NOCs. Second those are their IOC designations. Third please follow the Country - City format. Thanks. Merry Christmas. Passer-by 16:56, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Compare http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%2215+countries%22+%22Torch+relay%22+site%3Adoha-2006.com and http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%2213+countries%22+%22Torch+relay%22+site%3Adoha-2006.com for number of countries. See http://doha-2006.com/gis/menuroot/torchrelay/relay_route.html for way of listing. Passer-by 19:05, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Haven't I explained this already? NOCs are organizations. The torch went to places. If you go Madison Square Garden, you don't say "I went to the New York Knicks," but instead, "I went to New York City. --Howard the Duck 02:38, 25 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Those are not merely designations to the NOCs, but to the countries participated. In Asian Games, Korea means South Korea, and Korea DPR means North Korea. Officially the torch went through 15 countries, not 13 independent sovereign states. Passer-by 00:15, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Again, the torch went to places, while the NOCs participated. If the torch went to Athens does that mean Greece participated? --Howard the Duck 00:55, 30 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Wrong. As per official sources discussed in Talk:2006_Asian_Games#Hong_Kong_and_Macau, all mention either "13 countries" or "15 countries and regions". Never do they ever say "15 countries"--Huaiwei 12:52, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Not exactly wrong, as you may want to emphasize; I've posted other sources with other descriptions like "14 countries", etc. --Howard the Duck 13:41, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was refering to official sources, ie sources from the Asian Games website itself.--Huaiwei 14:37, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, but we should also give 3rd-party sources a chance too. --Howard the Duck 14:48, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sure, but its clear the majority are saying either 13 countries or 15 countries and regions isnt it? ;)--Huaiwei 15:24, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Maybe, but we can't leave out the rest. --Howard the Duck 15:29, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sure, but when there is only one figure which can be presented, surely one of them have to prevail. Community concensus seems to be pointing at 13 countries so far.--Huaiwei 16:05, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I'd like it to be 13 countries, with HK and Macau under China, but without the ", China" suffix. --Howard the Duck 16:09, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Which is the format already presented currently, unless passers-by reverts again.--Huaiwei 16:19, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I guess an RFC will iron out things. --Howard the Duck 16:29, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

changes by user edit

Hi! User:Lagalag seems to be changing articles of Filipino people from [[Filipino people|Filipino]] to [[Philippines|Filipino]]. Is this change correct? Changing other user's image licenses edit

Please do not change the licenses other users have placed on their images. A {{pd-self}} tag or anything along that lines means that the user releases all rights to it as they made it themselves. The tag you added to Image:XS typebanner.png created a false copyright on the image where one does not exist. Metros232 16:28, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I just followed User:Mithril Cloud on what he did... --Howard the Duck 16:31, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I just reverted that one. I only changed the license for that one since you stated that it's not eligible for CC. --Mithril Cloud 16:40, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Since it's a logotype? --Howard the Duck 16:42, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's a reproduction of what the logotype looks like as far as I can tell. Hence the "Own work, based on existing samples." summary. Metros232 16:48, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
So is it a derived work? --Howard the Duck 16:51, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I don't believe so. In this list of copyrightable and not, it appears that typography and calligraphy aren't copyrightable. Metros232 16:56, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Counterexample: So this isn't: Image:Ucla designlogo.gif? --Howard the Duck 16:58, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

(unindent)I think that the UCLA logo is actually used as a logo and the De La Salle "logo" is not. Based on De La Salle's University Identity page, it appears that this isn't a logo that they use. It looks like SunKing created this logotype based on the font standards that the identity page lays out. Am I reading that page correctly? Metros232 17:03, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm. How about if it appears with the logo, like on the walls of La Salle's building? --Howard the Duck 17:06, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I don't quite follow what you mean and how it relates to the image. From what I see, it's a completely different logo that SunKing created using the font guidelines but not the logo guidelines. Metros232 17:14, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, it's 1AM here (lol)... the thing is, the logoface seems to appear with the logo on one of La Salle's buildings at Manila (I'm not sure, though), making it a part of the logo. --Howard the Duck 17:21, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I don't remember any building in the campus that has both the logo and logotype on it. However, the logotype is used on official letters from the university but with the "Manila" text aligned on a different position. I do believe SunKing's version is just based from the guidelines and not an exact replica of the logotype. --Mithril Cloud 17:24, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ok, from what I understand about the link provided:
  1. The logo is copyrighted
  2. The logo can appear without the logotype
  3. The logotype can't appear without the logo unless it's part of a text.
Ergo, the logotype is copyrighted since it must always appear with the copyrighted logo. And since it's copyrighted, it is a derived work. (Can we email DLSU on this?) --Howard the Duck 17:30, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't appear that the image that SunKing created and the logotype that the school uses are the same (particularly the way the top line and bottom line are aligned). But, yes, perhaps you should email DLSU to explain the situation and get their input. Metros232 17:42, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Actually, the page where the logotype appears has a copyright notice, so ergo, its copyrighted, and the file in question is a derivative work. --Howard the Duck 17:55, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

why would a student from boise, idaho research about her? i don't know, but OTHER PEOPLE WOULD RESEARCH ABOUT HER! think about that. you're not the only one who researches here in wikipedia. dufus. and why'd you go to her page anyway if you don't research about her? and what do you care about her in the first place? why would you pd or afd her??

Nobody owns articles here. If you don't want your work to be edited mercilessly, create a blog. And I'm not from Boise, Idaho, either. And calling me butthole wouldn't help. --Howard the Duck 13:08, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

then why did you mention in your reply that you're a student from boise, idaho? and wikipedia is for everyone, and the creator of the article has every right to the article. it is unfair for the creators of the articles who put so much effort into creating the page when other rude people (like yourself) edits it "mercilessly". how would you feel if you created an article, and someone ruins it or deletes it? i just want you to know where i'm coming from.

Also, read slowly my reply to you, I've never, ever, said that I'm from Boise, Idaho. Wikipedia is for everyone, everyone can edit it, page owners really have no rights on any page, except for choosing on what type of English to use. Look, it's perhaps my articles are relevant because they're not deleted, but editors don't care if someone's placed a great deal of effort in article; in fact, it is nothing. If you're really a fan of Kristine Bernal, then you should create a blog or a fansite. Wikipedia is not a fansite, a gallery, etc. Remember, this is an encyclopedia. --Howard the Duck 13:24, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

merger of college leagues in the philippines edit

hi, i noticed that you advocate the merger of the different college sporting leagues in the Philippines. What would be the parameters for this merger in your opinion? For me, i don't think a complete merger will be good as this would entail a longer season for the competition and it would severely affect the studies of the student-athletes.....your thoughts please...139.130.237.18 05:58, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'd advocate a March Madness-type of tournament. The old leagues will be dissolved, a new system of leagues - based on geographical location would be used instead. Each league would have like 6-7 schools, and the top teams figure in a single-elimination-type of tourney... (since this is unrelated to Wikipedia, you can email me instead of you'd want to continue the discussion.) --Howard the Duck 07:22, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK. Thanks for the clarification. Do you think that the same function might be served better by having using

Filipino people edit

I just reverted your edit to Filipino people where you deleted from the infobox those communities with populations less than 100,000 as non-notable. While this certainly makes the infobox more concise and readable, I have some reservations about doing so. For instance, the Filipino community in Bahrain is just 33,301 people but comprises nearly 5% of the total population. I think it would be less controversial to include all communities for which there is sourced information. Black Falcon 03:45, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

33,301? That's like a barangay in Quezon City (lol), certainly not notable when compared to the Filipino population of 87 million. Maybe on the demographics of Bahrain it can (and should) be included but not on the Filipino people page. --Howard the Duck 03:51, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
My apologies. I just noticed as I was reading through the article that there is a separate page for Overseas Filipino, which, if anywhere, is where this information (communities of less than 100,000) may be notable. I will revert my edit promptly. Black Falcon 03:58, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Why not merge this with other Filipino populations in the Middle East except Saudi Arabia? They'll most probably surpass 100,000. --Howard the Duck 04:01, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
It would surpass 100,000, but then the same might have to be done for Europe (> 260,000 excluding the UK and Italy). I am not insisting that the populations in the Middle East be included -- the only reason I chose Bahrain was because the proportion of Filipinos in that country is relatively high. However, such information about a numerically small but relatively (to the host country's population) large Filipino community would probably fit better in the Overseas Filipino article. Contingent on my ability to find reliable sources, I will probably add such info to the Overseas Filipino infobox. Black Falcon 04:10, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ok, if you say so. --Howard the Duck 04:17, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Uh... hi!!! I'm actually quite glad that someone who is good in computers like you (or is it because I'm a dummy?) edits Filipino-related articles but I can't help but be curious on what part of the articles I edited are copyrighted or came from another website?? About Spanish language in the Philippines edit

Just wondering why did the Filipino Government abolished the Spanish language as the national language of the country?.. I find it hard to believe that they would do that. I recently visited Filipinas and Timor Leste last year and I totally enjoyed my holiday visit.. The only thing that shocked me that every one was speaking American-English instead of Spanish in Filipinas. I hope that the Filipino Government in the future will re-established the Spanish language as the national language, because it is the true official language of the country.--Ramírez 02:29, 29 January (UTC)
