How to add a project?

I know nothing about scripts, so I'm a bit weary of fiddling here, but could someone add Wikipedia:WikiProject Extinction? FunkMonk (talk) 15:23, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi, how many pages do you want included (top 10 articles? top x articles?), how long of a time frame do you want (past x days), what do you want your threshold for "orange" /intermediate activity to be (how many edits is intermediate editing activity), and what do you want your "red" threshold to be for high editing activity? I added the Bats project on here recently, so I just scrolled through the other projects to get an idea of what I wanted each of those parameters to be based on what other projects are doing. What's wrong with the bird project?

It seems a hot articles page was once attempted to be made for the bird project[2], but it doesn't seem to work? Anyone knows how to get it running? Enwebb, Kaldari? FunkMonk (talk) 10:05, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

@FunkMonk: It looks to me like it's an issue with how the bird articles are categorized. The bot is pulling from Category:WikiProject Birds articles, but there aren't any actual pages there. Compared to the mammals or the bats hot articles bot categories to see the difference. The issue is with the WP:BIRDS template, which is, unfortunately, permanently protected, or I could fix it myself. The template is placing the bird-related articles into categories based on quality and importance, and then those categories are placed into the WikiProject Birds articles category. Really, the template should directly place the article into all 3 categories rather than nesting them. It's a relatively simple fix, but an administrator or template editor needs to do it. They just need to set the template parameter "MAIN_CAT" to "WikiProject Birds articles". Hope that helps! Enwebb (talk) 16:57, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

@Casliber, FunkMonk, and Jmilburn:—I edited the template, and then I refreshed the talk page of a bird article to see if it would populate the category, and it did. Peregrine falcon is now in Category:WikiProject Birds articles, which leads me to believe that all the other pages using the template will end up there shortly. Yes, in theory the hot articles bot will run tomorrow, unless there are other problems that I did not notice. However, it might take a few days for the hot articles bot to accurately reflect editing activity across all birds pages. It won't be accurate until the WikiProject Birds articles category is fully populated (category currently contains ~50 of the 22k bird articles). I'll check back in on it tomorrow to see if the problem is solved. Enwebb (talk) 00:36, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

Anarchism project

Hasn't run for the anarchism task force even though the category's populated. Any ideas what might be the matter? czar 16:57, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

@Czar: There's a minor error in how the category name was typed (line 212 of the source code, the red square). I bet this added character is the problem. For whatever reason, though, the page is no longer appearing editable? I see a view source and a view history but there is no longer an edit source. I see this instead: "You do not have permission to edit this JSON page because it contains another user's personal settings." I haven't seen this before. Enwebb (talk) 03:01, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

I don't think so. Category:WikiProject Elements articles is a WikiProject category and contains talk pages. The category you mentioned contains articles. What is the reason to change the category? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:40, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

Something broken with climate change?

Hi, the bot points at Category:Climate change, which does have articles which have been recently edited. The bot's output is aimed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Climate change/Hot articles, which is empty. Are we doing something wrong? NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 16:01, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

@NessieVL and Izno: WikiProject Plants and WikiProject Lepidoptera are both too big to use this bot. The queries that the bot runs are quite expensive (i.e. time and resource consuming for the Tool Forge server), so as the documentation says, "The category must have fewer than 50,000 pages." How to create separate feeds for dependant projects?

@Kaldari: How do I create two separate Hot Article feeds, where one project is a dependant of another, and where they share the same wikiproject template? Specifically, I'd like to create one feed for WP:WikiProject Mountains of the Alps, which uses the same template as its parent, WP:WikiProject Mountains, namely:

{{WikiProject Mountains|class= |importance= |alps=Yes|alps-importance= }}

where "alps=Yes" adds the article's Talk page to the WP:ALPS Project.

• This first feed would show only articles related to the mountains of the alps (receptor page: Wikipedia:WikiProject Mountains of the Alps/Hot articles.
• I would then like to have a second, broader Hot Article feed at WP:WikiProject Mountains, but the latter does not need to exclude articles relating to the Alps. (receptor page: Wikipedia:WikiProject Mountains/Hot articles)

As my post immediately above this one shows, I recently configured feeds for other WikiProjects having distinct project templates (e.g. here and here), but figuring this particular one is beyond me. @Nick Moyes: The easiest way would be to add a TF_1_MAIN_CAT parameter to {{WikiProject Mountains}} that specifies a specific category (like Category:Alps articles) that you could then use to configure HotArticlesBot. HotArticlesBot doesn't really care about templates, just the categories they use. See Template:WPBannerMeta#Task_forces for further guidance on setting up the task force category. @Izno@Xaosflux sorry for late reply, I was a bit busy and missed it altogether. The alerts are all in same colour from 10 to 200+ edits. I was hoping to get a gradient or something like that. Any chance the listing could go above 10?

This is mostly certainly an awesome tool and many thanks to those who maintain this! WP:FAR is using Wikipedia:Featured article review/Hot articles as a monitoring tool. Based on my reading of the documentation, you can only go up to 10 articles on the listing.
