A favour regarding Iranian/Persian folktales

Hello, HistoryofIran. Considering your coverage of Iranian topics, I was wondering if you could help me in regards to Iranian/Persian folktales. As you can see by my edit history, I edit mostly articles about folktales, and even created pages about some Iranian folktales, like The Black Colt and Yasmin and the Serpent Prince.

If it is not too much bother, I would like to ask if you know where I can find folktales that follow the following narrative frame (for reference, see Animal as Bridegroom):

  • 1. Girl/princess marries a supernatural husband in snake/serpent form (may be a horse in some tales);
  • 2. Girl betrays husband (either burns his skin or tells his secret);
  • 3. Girl goes after him with iron shoes/canes (the recurring number seems to be seven)
  • 4. Girl finds her husband in his mother's house, and drops a ring in a jug of water to notify her husband.
  • 5. Girl is forced by her mother-in-law on hard tasks (one of which may be to go to another house and take/deliver a box).
  • 6. Girl escapes with husband.

I'm specifically looking for tales where the husband is in the shape of a horse, but he can be either a camel, a donkey or a sheep. I intend to create a separate article for its Iranian tales.

KHR FolkMyth (talk) 21:53, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello KHR FolkMyth. Thank you for your contributions, I am honoured that you ask me regarding this - unfortunately I am not really well versed in Iranian folktales. As for 2.; while this remains uncertain, some accounts state that Gordiya betrayed her husband Vistahm, though she killed him instead of burning his skin/telling his secret. Perhaps Iranica may be of help? It has a lot of articles about stories [1] --HistoryofIran (talk) 22:44, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the help. As for Iranica, I did find there a summary by Trever of a Kurdish or Persian tale involving the Simurg. Will look into it. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 22:57, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
Hello, HistoryofIran. Here is the reason why I asked this favour: Grünkappe (Iranian folktale). KHR FolkMyth (talk) 19:11, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
I see. I'll let you know if I find something useful. --HistoryofIran (talk) 21:11, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Asking about copyrights

hello, asking this to you because I don't know where to check this information, if you'll help me in this I'll appreciate that. Is it allowed to take some parts of already written sourced sentences in wikipedia and use it in another related wikipedia article ? LexaneAlex (talk) 15:03, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

Copying info from one wiki article to another? Yes. Though you need at least to state in ur edit summary that u did that. I can expand my comment when I get home. HistoryofIran (talk) 18:24, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
I'm home now. You could write something like this in your edit summary when adding copied content; "copied content from page name; see that page's history for attribution". See WP:COPYWITHIN for more info. --HistoryofIran (talk) 22:06, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

Unsourced revertions

In the article British Raj, you reverted the edits without even thinking twice. The caption must match what the map title says too. And in the discussion Fowler&Fowler failed to prove or provide any sources stating that British Raj referred to country's territory too. While I've provided sources from the Imperial Gazetteer of India and the Interpretations Act 1889 of the UK Parliament. In the discussion what I did fail to provide was any sources explicitly stating that "Indian Empire was the official name of India between 1858 and 1947". It isn't POV pushing, its building an accurate Encyclopedia using "reliable sources". Would you care to provide one stating that "British Raj referred to country's territory too". Not your own WP:OR.

Animation

Hello, please take a look at the animation page, there is a problem. I wanted to add the goblet which Oxford University mentions as the oldest animation in the world. So there was a lot of discussion, I think you can help to solve this problem. thank you

Animation created with the images on a pottery gobletand dated to (c. 3178 BCE) found in Shahr-e Sookhteh. The paintings on this gobletand are the first recorded attempts by humans to show movement.
An animated vase, made in eastern Iran in the late third millennium BCE, is possibly the worlds earliest example of animation: when it is spun, the gazelle appears to leap.[1] National Museum of Iran

About user User:TimothyBlue

Hello again, thank you for help in previous topic. This time I want to report on this user because the only thing he did is about deleting already sourced information from page List of wars involving Armenia. I know that this article already violates many rules of Wikipedia, but he is putting "CN" to every section, even to wars that have their main article with same information LexaneAlex (talk) 12:45, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

TimothyBlue's edits seem pretty reasonable - in fact, I would say that they're being very nice with them. They could very well remove them with good reason. Point your mouse at the "[citation needed]" stuff, more info will pop up, in which they explained their reasoning(s) there. --HistoryofIran (talk) 13:35, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to Armenia, Azerbaijan, or related conflicts, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Sary or Sari

The name of the center of Mazandaran province has been Sary since the distant past, which unfortunately has been changed to Sari due to repeated misuse by users on various websites and information sources. This problem has been observed on various sites including Wikipedia and Google and the current maps published by them. By referring to the available official documents, including the names registered in official organizations, including the International Aviation Agency, IATA, and old official maps and available official documents, it proves that the name Sary is correct. Therefore, it is necessary for databases and search engines to correct it.

Your contributed article, Bundari

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Bundari. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Bondari Esfahani. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Bondari Esfahani. If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Shirt58 (talk) 🦘 10:44, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

Rumi/Ibn-Sina Ethnicity War Edits

Hello, I hope you are well.

These articles were edited by the same user Kansas Bear without any discussion or reason to remove the Persian ethnicity from both figures. Rumi's page already has the consensus of him being Persian. I've written some comments about the changes and am wondering why these changes were made. The application of MOS:Ethnicity apparently does not apply to Greek or Roman philosophers and poets but strangely applies to these two? I don't agree with that logic.

These are Persian born, Persian influenced figures who wrote under Persianate society. It's logically the same for someone like Socrates who was Greek born and influenced in Greek thus making him a Greek philosopher from that school of thought and region.

I was wondering if you could weigh in on this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2607:FEA8:55DF:FC8A:8C6D:42C2:1616:4D24 (talk) 03:42, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Hello, and likewise. Please see my recent comment here [2]. "Roman" can be a nationality too, but if you think the mention of "Greek" should be omitted in those kind of articles, I think you should take it to their talk pages, or even create a section at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biography. --HistoryofIran (talk) 06:44, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

about tahmasp image

Hi. The image of tahmasb.png actually belongs to Tahmasb II and unfortunately, Most of peaple are saying that belongs to Tahmasb I, But it's not true because this kind of Crown used by latest Safavid kings (After Abbas I) and Tahmasp I never used this kind of crown ( Which you can notice in real Tahmasp I portraits )According to this, the mentioned image strongly belongs to tahmasp II.However the original painting was painted in latest Safavid era. Abtin3rJ (talk) 11:34, 7 May 2023 (UTC)

@Abtin3rJ: Hello. I'm sorry, but that's not true. See [3], the portrait was created in the 17th-century, when Tahmasp II didn't even rule yet. --HistoryofIran (talk) 11:43, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for answering, I checked and found out this painting actually has been painted from another painting which belongs to 17th century and you are right, maybe the artist of original painting just painted the tahmasb I with crown style of latests Safavid kings cause artist was in the same period with them. But its's still doubtable for me.Thanks! Edit reverted: Parthian Empire

You asked why I described the sentence as condescending: I believe that saying "Parthia's victory cemented its reputation as a formidable if not equal power with Rome." is a way of displaying a bias toward Rome and against Parthia. Why is it not equal? Why is it necessary to say that just after talking about a Parthian victory? Why is that relevant in a section about Parthian history? Mantis Orquida (talk)

@Mantis Orquida: Sorry, but you mostly answered my question with a number of questions. It has nothing to do with bias, Rome was arguably the strongest power at that time, while it wasn't that long ago before that the Parthians were still establishing their rule over the Iranian and Mesopotamian plateau. If anything, the text is complementing the Parthians, saying that they were possibly on par with the greatest power at the time. --HistoryofIran (talk) 23:02, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Request

Hello colleague. Can I ask you for something? I'm not good with English wiki, and I'm sure you can do it several times faster than me, and with as lesser words as possible.

The problem is this. There is an article Azerbaijani language. It uses a picture that is followingly used by the rest interwiki articles. This "Map of the Azerbaijani language". The description of the file states that this is “own work”, which is based on two other maps:

I draw your attention to Talyshistan. On this map, the darker blue shading of Azeri Turkish prevalence "cuts" the shading of the Talysh language and dividing it goes perpendicular to the Caspian Sea, which is not shown on these two maps on which it is supposedly based. I think this map is unreliable and needs to be replaced. With respect, colleague. Smpad (talk) 15:49, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

The Marsh Arabs Article

You only locked it without reverting the vandalism of this troll and his sockpuppets. He is adding irrelevant or outright made up sources for his claims. He is a self admitted racist troll (https://i.imgur.com/bb9R6EE.png) even his name has racist contentions. He is also bragging about it (https://i.imgur.com/ND8mkeG.png). He is now vandalizing the Zutt Rebellion article. I'd appreciate if you could fix both.

Thanks. Lorne Collin (talk) 22:05, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

This latest edit by user:Raziel1975S would indicate they are stalking your edits. Similar edits[4][5] whereby Raziel1975S, arrives after you have edited an article. Their pattern appears to be make a few disruptive edits, then not edit for a month, then make a few more disruptive edits, rinse, repeat. --Kansas Bear (talk) 20:41, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi Kansas Bear. I didn't realize that - thanks for informing me. I am honestly tired of that user, the only reason I haven't reported them yet is because I've been too lazy. But that's gonna change now. --HistoryofIran (talk) 22:00, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Question

Hello. How you doing? Do you have no problem if I take inspiration from your menu and make a similar menu for myself? Don't know if I should be asking this, but anyways, asking just in case. WikiEditor1234567123 (talk) 20:40, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi @WikiEditor1234567123:. Be my guest! I don't own anything here. And I took this menu myself from one of our great Wikipedians. --HistoryofIran (talk) 20:42, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know. By the way, not to force you or anything, but since this seems to be your field, I recommend taking a look at the Battle of the Terek River. Article seems to have the RS but needs to be fixed, additional information added, etc., so it wouldn't be a stub. Since this was basically a huge clash between two Empires in the North Caucasus, I hoped this would interest you. WikiEditor1234567123 (talk) 20:55, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
I see. While it is in my field, it's not my strongest point tbh. I have added it to my watchlist. If I encounter WP:RS which may be helpful to it, I'll add it. --HistoryofIran (talk) 22:46, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Apologies if I'm bothering. I saw your recent SPI case. I figured maybe you want to check this SPI case I made. This other user also raised his concern about Muqale here. Another account that might be of interest to you is Valarkho who made similar edits as muqale on the Gelae article Ola Tønningsberg (talk) 23:24, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
Hi Ola Tønningsberg. Interesting, I am glad to see that I'm not the only who was finding this fishy. I'll take a look at it, tak! --HistoryofIran (talk) 23:36, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
Hello, @HistoryofIran. I noticed you got an answer and the admin directed you to the Dzurdzuketi archive which my SPI was also part of. I believe the previously mentioned user, Valarkho, and Muqale may be connected. They have the same writing style and equal interests. Do you think we should mention Valarkho in the current SPI? Nobody has CU checked these two users together. Ola Tønningsberg (talk) 01:21, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
Hi Ola Tønningsberg. I think that may need a new SPI investigation thread, or could you perhaps comment that in my SPI thread? I'm sure that would make it get taken more seriously. --HistoryofIran (talk) 11:59, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

A question

Hello colleague. Do you happen to know a user who has access to the full articles of the Encyclopedia of Islam 2nd edition, to whom I could turn for help (I need the text from one article)? With respect. Smpad (talk) 11:29, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello. If I'm not mistaken, every Wikipedia user access to Brill now. Does this link work for you? [8] --HistoryofIran (talk) 11:31, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
Wow. Didn't know until now. But I don't fit yet, because I've been on Wikipedia for less than 6 months :( I'll have to wait. But incredibly huge thanks, colleague! With great respect. Smpad (talk) 11:36, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
What article is it that you're interested in? I can upload it for you. You can also request it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request. --HistoryofIran (talk) 12:31, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
Sorry for not answering, colleague. All these days I have been busy with fierce disputes with Azerbaijani users. Right now we are arguing about the reliability of Garnik Asatrian. And I picked up a couple of your arguments, but they continue to insist that Asatrian cannot be authoritative on the Talyshis because of his personal views on the existence of the Republic of Azerbaijan (that he wants it to be divided for the benefit of all the peoples inhabiting it). One Azerbaijani user (Interfase) with great wiki-experience went through my articles and removed all references to Asatrian and information from them. We are arguing now on the Russian version of Wikipedia: Reliable sources/Noticeboard. Is there any verdict on Asatrian in the English wiki? With respect, colleague. Smpad (talk) 13:35, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
There has been multiple attempts here as well by users due to sheer WP:JDLI. I’m not home atm, but this thread has all the info that u need Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Archive 391#Garnik Asatrian on ethnic issues. HistoryofIran (talk) HistoryofIran (talk) 14:03, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
Colleague, the fierce debate on Asatrian is still ongoing and their outcome can be unpredictable. The non-Azeri participants began to make complaints on Asatrian for forgery of information, and I want to ask you for help with sources on one fact: do you know the sources that would talk about the looting of Lankaran by Cossack warlord Stapan (Stenka) Razin who made raids on the Persian coast from Baku to Astrabad (Gorgan) in the second half of the 17th century? Just a mention, even in the sources in Persian if possible. Exactly about Lankaran, not about the near Svinoy island. It's very tense. But I will be very grateful to you if you could help. Sincerely, colleague. Smpad (talk) 23:01, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Those participants need proof (aka WP:RS) that Asatrian is forging history, not their own personal feelings/opinions. --HistoryofIran (talk) 23:05, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Yes, but they just refer to the Russian version of WP:RS, where there is this passage: "Unusual claims require serious evidence". So the rationalization is: "We read from Asatrian that Razin’s Cossacks plundered Lankaran, but we don't read about it in other sources, which means that he specially wrote "Lankaran" to give more historical importance to the Talysh, since he openly speaks in an interview for the collapse of the Republic of Azerbaijan and believes that the Armenians "need to work" with its non-Turkic peoples, which means that he is not a reliable source for the Talysh in general." With respect, colleague. Smpad (talk) 23:27, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
But I fail to see how that makes Asatrian unreliable, especially for such a minor event, it seems more like nitpicking and an excuse to get rid of a source they dont like. In what work does Asatrian mention Razin's Cossack and Lankaran? --HistoryofIran (talk) 23:36, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
So, this is from, perhaps his only work in Russian, Introduction to the History and Culture of the Talish People, a collective monograph edited by him, prepared and presented specifically for the second Talysh studies conference ([9]). And there is this passage:

При шахе Сулеймане (1667-1694 гг.) все земли Талыша были объявлены шахским доменом, личным его владением. Нападения казаков Степана Разина в 1668-1670 годах привели к разграблению Ленкорани и других городов в Мазандаране, как и всего каспийского побережья области Талыш – шахские войска не смогли отбиться от казаков.

With respect, colleague. Smpad (talk) 23:46, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Талыш is Talish. Smpad (talk) 23:50, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Ah, it's Russian. Thought it was English. --HistoryofIran (talk) 00:06, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
After many difficulties, I did find a mention of it in Struys's memoirs (this guy) (published in Russian in 1935). And even in the publication of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijani SSR in 1961. But I would like to ask you, colleague, can this book be a reliable source — [10]? I can't find anything about its publisher on the internet at random because I can't even read the Arabic script :( I don't know what Agatha Christie and probably some South Indian writing are doing on the cover of the book, but there is a passage in it that I need:

این غارت قزاقها بارها در طول سواحل خزر از لنکران تا فرح آباد مازندران تا به دار آویخته شدن استنکا رازین در دوم صفر ۱۰۸۲ ادامه یافت .۲ در دوره شاه سلیمان قورچی باشی شاه فردی از تالشان به نام امیراصلان بیگ تالش بود .

But 2 Safar 1082 scares me. I tried to calculate it somehow. If taken from the Hijra, then this is 1704. But Razin was executed (by dismemberment, not hanging) in 1671. In general, sources about Razin's raids in Gilan, Mazandaran and other Persian places (for example, in Iranica 1) are sufficient, but there are very few of them specifically about Lankaran. But the dispute over Asatrian is already going in my favor :) With respect, colleague. Smpad (talk) 21:39, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I can't read the Persian script either, so it's hard to say with certainty. That Persian source does look a bit dodgy though. --HistoryofIran (talk) 22:52, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
Hello colleague. I am still waiting for the result on Asatrian (it took too long), but for now I turned my eyes to the Russian version of the article Azerbaijani khanates. The Ardabil, Zandzhan, Karadag, Makin, Maraga, Sarab, Tabriz, Urmia, Khalkhal, Khoy, and Merend khanates are also listed there ([11]). And in Ukranian and Polish wilis also. Whereas they are not in the English version. Azerbaijani participants refer to this Swietochowski quote:

Thus began a half-century-long period of Azerbaijani independence, albeit in a condition of deep political fragmentation and internal warfare. Most of the principalities were organized as khanates, small replicas of the Persian monarchy, including Karabagh, Sheki, Ganja, Baku, Derbent, Kuba, Nakhichevan, Talysh, and Erivan in northern Azerbaijan and Tabriz, Urmi, Ardabil, Khoi, Maku, Maragin, and Karadagh in its southern part. Many of the khanates were subdivided into mahals (regions), territorial units inhabited by members of the same tribe, reflecting the fact that the residue of tribalism was still strong.

Do you happen to know what to do with it? Sincerely, colleague. Smpad (talk) 12:45, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
Hi. There's no mention of "Khanates in the Caucasus" in that quote, and it goes without saying that Tabriz, Ardabil, etc are not located in the Caucasus. Moreover the vast majority of WP:RS agrees that Azeri was not an ethnonym during that period [12] and that the khanates were certainly not independent [13]. See also [14] [15]. Referring them as "Azerbaijani khanates" is POV and WP:UNDUE, not only since the ethnyom did not exist, but a lot of sources use "Iranian/Persian khanates" or just simply "khanates" (some which can be seen here Khanates of the Caucasus or just a quick Google books search). --HistoryofIran (talk) 12:51, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
Azerbaijani users say that the Azerbaijani khanates weren't limited only to the Caucasus, and the khanates of Iranian Azerbaijan are also Azerbaijani khanates. They don't refer to ethnicity, they quote Muriel Atkin:

In Safavi times, Azerbaijan was applied to all the Muslim-ruled khanates of the eastern Caucasus as well as to the area south of the Aras River as far as the Qezel Uzan River, the latter region being approximately the same as the modern Iranian ostans of East and West Azerbaijan. (Muriel Atkin, Russia and Iran, 1780—1828. 2nd. ed. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press. 1980. ISBN 0-8166-0924-1, 9780816609246)

Therefore, they argue that Azerbaijan was also above Araks, and the territories of modern Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iranian Azerbaijan are all Azerbaijan. Therefore, all the khanates were Azerbaijani.
Btw, are there any source that limits "Azerbaijani khanates" exactly to Caucasus, not just mentions Caucasus?
With respect, colleague. Smpad (talk) 13:10, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
Its just cherrypicking and grasping at straws (i.e Wikipedia:Tendentious editing). The links I posted hold more than enough sources that demonstrates so. HistoryofIran (talk) 13:23, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

Questions

Hello colleague. I have 2 questions:
1) Article History of Talysh (bad translation of bad composed Russian article that was also recently merged) was recently merged with the Talish (region) article. Can you please check the current content?
2) There is an interesting picture of Tabriz inhabitants after the war Ottoman–Safavid War (1603–1618). Can it be placed in the Tabriz article?
With respect, Smpad (talk) 21:03, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi.
1) Just checked, it looks a bit messy. I personally think the original revision at Talish (region) before was beter.
2) I don't really have an opinion about it as of right now, so that's up to you. --HistoryofIran (talk) 21:36, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

The city of Bijar is on the move...

I'm sorry to bust in, but I'm unsure about what to do concerning the uncertain page name for the article on Bijar. You'll notice I moved it to "Bijar, Kurdistan," which if not the best choice, was better than the dreadful "Bijar (city)." I do think "Bijar, Iran" was the best choice, and apparently it was moved there after discussion. It only lasted a short time before it was moved back to "Bijar (city)." It's not the end of the world, and perhaps I shouldn't care, but I'm deep into this project, and I feel the page name as it exists is about the worst choice. Any thoughts? Brightkingdom (talk) 00:58, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi Brightkingdom. I don't mind "Bijar, Iran", but I think you will have to convince the user who moved it back, or make a move request, where I will give my support. Bests. --HistoryofIran (talk) 02:14, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
