We're working on something special...

...to award Buaidh for all his hard work.

It's at User:Penubag/Sandbox3.

But it's not done yet. Feel free to help improve it.

I'm hoping that everyone involved with the WP:WPOOK will sign it (please sign without a timestamp).

Thank you.

Outline of James Bond

As you may know, as well as being a member of WP:WPOOK, I'm a member of WikiProject James Bond. So, if you want, I could start a draft of such an outline so we can see how it goes? Highfields (talk, contribs, review) 14:20, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes please! Shaken, not stirred. The Transhumanist 21:16, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
I have moved it to User:Highfields/sandbox. I suggest you get approval on the project talk page before you launch yet another article about the character. It would also have been a good idea to provide an edit summary linking to any proposals for the article. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 16:39, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
I will continue drafting at User:Highfields/sandbox before moving it back into the mainspace. Highfields (talk, contribs, review) 18:05, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
By all means work on it. But I suggest that you should not move it back. Ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject James Bond and find someone else who is willing to endorse the article by moving it. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 18:45, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
I have support to create, expand and move it as part of Wikipedia's series of Outlines, I was asked to work on it as I am a member of the Outlines WikiProject and had a knowledge of 007. But, if you think I should get someone else to move it then I will. Just out of interest, whats your opinion on the outline RHaworth? Highfields (talk, contribs, review) 19:00, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
On reflection the real problem was the pretentious title: James Bond is the "outline" article. But other suggestions: do not repeat the allies & henchmen lists under films if they are already listed at novels, and/or collapse the allies & henchmen links to one word links, and no need for separate links to #Cast. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 21:22, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
I fear you do not understand the point of an Outline, please see WP:OUTLINE and WP:WPOOK for why it is called that. As for the other points, I will take them on board Highfields (talk, contribs, review) 21:26, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Outline of water

I saw a redlink for an Outline of water on the WP:WPOOK page as an example of why we need outlines. I looked into it further and found there was definitely a need so I created it. I've just moved it into the mainspace. Feel free to check it over and it'll need putting on all the projected outline stuff but I'm not really sure how to do that. Highfields (talk, contribs) 20:34, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Wow. I had no idea there was that much water-related stuff on Wikipedia.
Nice job.
You got me interested, so I took a look around...
Did you do a Google search for "water" in Wikipedia article titles?
Did you do a Google search for "aquatic" in Wikipedia article titles?
I noticed a lot of water-related topics in Category:Water not included in the outline.
Would you say that activities in or on water were different than uses of water?
Where do these fit in?
Does that help?

Corazon Aquino in Time Person of the Year

  • I have been recently seen that you must have something against Filipinos. Most of the time, you revert edits that are implying that Corazon Aquino is the first Filipino chosen to be the Time Person of the Year [1], [2], [3]. It very unfair if you would remove this fact. Corazon Aquino have hailed the country of the Philippines to rise from all the corruption adn suffering. Her husband even died for the country. Till death all that she have thought about is the Filipino. It is very disrespectful for you, that you couldn't even let go a very little fact to atleast give some respect for the president.

Into my edits:

This is very important fact. This is one of the main reasons why she was chosen as a Time Person of the Year.
If you can insert this ("Bush was referred to as The Two George Bushes — this is not a reference to George W. Bush but to how George H.W. Bush was complimented for international affairs and criticized for domestic affairs, including his quote, "Read my lips: no new taxes.") much more irrelevant fact than the one for Corazon Aquino, this is simply an act of vandalism. You cannot always be followed on. You do not own wikipedia, and you are not the main leader of the page. It doesn't always have to go your way.
There has always been a confusion of who has been in Time Magazine first between Manuel L. Quezon and Corazon Aquino. These are even always being ask on Game Shows in the Philippines, specially on 1 million jackpot rounds. By adding this information, it would easily end the confusion bothering the readers of Wikipedia.
Wikipedia is an encyclopedic place. I believe that everything that I have inserted are relevant and necessary informations. It would be very unfair for you to remove these information because you think its unnecessary. I repeat, you are not the owner of Wikipedia and you're not always the one to be followed on. --XBOXaddict (talk) 12:05, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
  • I'm sorry that you think I hate her or Filipinos, I don't and I have the greatest respect for her, but the fact of the matter is, do you see the sort of detail you went into on any other peoples entries - No. And clearly Miesianiacal agrees, he reverted some of your edits too. Wikipedia has to be neutral, she may have been a great woman and I've read all about her husband but, for the purposes of wikipedia she is just another woman. If you have any problems with this, please raise it on this page, I think I will.
Highfields (talk, contribs) 14:35, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
  • By the way, I don't claim to own wikipedia, and I don't claim to be the one everybody has to follow and I am quite offended by your accusations, but look at it rationally, it's not included for anyone else, why should it be for her, I know she was a wonderful woman but we have to be neutral. Wikipedia's Neutrality policy says, The tone of Wikipedia articles should be impartial, neither endorsing nor rejecting a particular point of view - your edits clearly endorse her.
Accusing people of vandalism is also a very offensive and serious matter. As for your point on the 2 bushes, it is actually confusing because a stranger reading the text would assume it was Bush Sr and Bush Jr, which it isnt. The only way of knowing that is to read the caption, wheras you can tell she's the first Filipino by the flags. And try to remember, the content of Filipino gameshows isn't always the best criteria for wikipedia inclusion.

Your diligence

The Original Barnstar
I award Highfields this barnstar for doing what needs to be done and actually getting it done! This is an ability that most people can't do easily (me definitely included) Good work! -- penubag  (talk) 08:37, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

You said you created outline of water because you saw that it needed to be done! Thanks for being responsible and just doing it! I admire you for that part. Also, I've been wanting to see that outline created for a while so thanks for making that happen! -- penubag  (talk) 08:37, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm back...

Hi Highfields,

I'm back from wikibreak, refreshed and ready to rock!

How was your summer vacation?

Nice job on the Outline of water. And congrats on the barnstar, you deserve it.

I'm looking forward to seeing what topic you select for your next outline. If you have trouble choosing a subject, you may find the message I just posted to Penubag helpful.

Keep in touch!

Derwent Edge

The reason I changed the heading of the infobox, and attempted to change the image therein, is that the information it contained (elevation, OS grid reference) applied only to Back Tor, the highest point on the edge, and not to the edge as a whole. Note that I supplied two sets of coordinates in the article—the title coordinates, giving a central point along the edge, and the infobox coordinates, those of Back Tor (to match the elevation info in the box). In my geocoding activities, I've seen this system used frequently in other articles (see Plynlimon, for example), and I frankly don't understand the resistance to my edits, since Mick Knapton hasn't responded to my query on his talk page. Perhaps you can explain it. Deor (talk) 17:47, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Outline Update - expanding the Outline of Knowledge - 2009-10-05

Time for some catching up...

Special award and thanks to Buaidh

Congratulations and kudos to Buaidh, the first recipient of the Wikipedia World Developer Award, and the first inductee into the Outline of Knowledge WikiProject's Hall of Fame.

The award was announced about 2 months agos on the WikiProject's talk page, and on Wikipedia's Community Bulletin Board.

Buaidh created the historical outlines for all of the U.S. States, the U.S. capital, and most of the U.S. insular areas. He has also worked indefatigably day after day, improving all of the outlines of the U.S. States, and the outlines of all of the countries of the world!

Who's been up to what?
  • Buaidh, working hard on the country outlines.
  • Highfields, MacMed, and I worked on the see also sections of the subject articles corresponding to the outlines (adding or updating the links to the relevant outlines and indexes).
Wiki-Zombies

Discussions can sure be frustrating - try getting a proposal through on a guideline's talk page sometime. Most of the time, it seems like the opposition is mindlessly following each other, like...

Zombies. (You've got to see this).

Outline of Knowledge

Yes, it's a proper noun. It's only proper, since we also have an article called Outline of knowledge which is about knowledge generically.

OOK expansion!

After a couple month vacation, I'm ready to slam the gas pedal to the floor. Are you?

Things are speeding up!

Take a look...

New to the OOK

The following outlines have been added to the OOK within the past couple of months or so. Some of them were renames, some of them brand new, and some of them recently discovered after sitting in article space for awhile as orphans.

Here's some more pages that have been renamed to outlines even more recently, but that need to be converted to OOK format:

Lists to merge into outlines

The following pairs of pages are content forks and need to be merged:

Not sure what to rename these to
Rough outlines, renamed/moved to draft space
Lists that can be structured into decent outlines

Only a few hundred more to go.  :)

The Transhumanist 04:46, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

You appear to be unfamiliar with how Wikipedia functions.

"Policy does not prohibit users, including both registered and anonymous users, from removing comments from their own talk pages"

Stay the hell away from my talkpage until you deal with your own hypocrisy and the fact that you don't seem to understand the problem is with TT calling me a liar. → ROUX  20:42, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Reference for what, exactly? And I note you conveniently omit your "Shut up you annoying little person" comment. Would somewhat undermine your argument, wouldn't it? → ROUX  20:46, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

It might, but you've being doing that for the past hour and a half, so who's the better person. The problem is that you swore and cursed at TT, far worse than calling someone a liar. Since you've deleted the posts, I restored it here to refer to. It is my page afterall. And for your information, I copied this here before I said it, feel free to add it yourself. Highfields (talk, contribs) 20:50, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Transcript of debate at User talk:Roux for reference

By the way, I don't appreciate being told I don't know what I'm talking about, or being called a hypocrite. I'm a member of the project concerned, I've tried to be nothing but diplomatic (unlike some), I've been neutral despite my allegiance and I've read all the comments being debated. So please at least have some courtesy to me, if not the Transhumanist. Highfields (talk, contribs) 9:21 pm, Today (UTC+1)

I'd be happy not to call you a hypocrite if you didn't act like one. Finger-wagging about being pissed off at outrageous accusations, followed by calling me tiresome and indeed your 'unlike some' comment above? It's the definition of hypocrisy. You have not, actually, been neutral--you have spent much time castigating me and approximately zero time saying anything to TT about making such disgusting allegations. Go away. → ROUX ₪ 9:23 pm, Today (UTC+1)

No, I wont go away. You have sworn, cursed, shouted and accused in the debate in question, I'd call that uncivil. You are tiresome, you have left over 20 replies, all saying the same thing, never making any progress. I have never accused lying, I would class taking exception to what I mentioned above to be normal, no matter who had said it. You said on the other page that 'it would naturally be neutral, and don't you dare call that into question ever again.', and yet you seem to think that that is also reasonable tone and language. Plus, you say above the edit box here 'please be polite', would you class swearing as polite? Highfields (talk, contribs) 9:31 pm, Today (UTC+1)

Hey, Highfields, cut it out, please. You've made your point: stop posting on User talk:Roux's page.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 20:48, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

I suggest you leave User talk:Roux alone, your recent comments could undoubtedly be considered harassment. Regardless of who is right or wrong, you are better off disengaging when discussion is going no where, and instead pursuing other remedies to the problem. Prodego talk 20:51, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

As I've just told someone, I cant remember who, I intend to leave it, but let it be known I don't appreciate being insulted for no reason Highfields (talk, contribs) 20:54, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

A bit advise, people are constantly going to disagree with and insult both your work, and you personally. You will find yourself in a better position, both mentally and in terms of public opinion to simply let them say whatever they want, and let their comments be judged by others. What they say only reflects on them, not on you. If you disagree with them, do so respectfully, regardless of how they act towards you. WP:COOL really is a guide for success. Prodego talk 20:57, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Warning

Highfields, regarding the recent dispute, while I do appreciate your attempt to defuse the situation with your apology, I still want you to know I feel that it was just a tad too little much too late. If you are engaged with a heated dispute with someone, it is best to just step away from the issue until matters can get discussed amicably. It is never acceptable to continue to bait people, and certainly not edit war with them on their own talk page in deliberate attempts to provoke them. I will take no administrative action at this time for several reasons: you were not warned about this before now, you don't appear to have a history of this from what I can see, and you did make an effort to apologize afterward. However, I do want to ask you to take a break for a while, leave Roux alone, and be aware that if this sort of thing does recur, you very likely will be blocked for a period of time. What happened here placed both of you in the wrong, when you both clearly knew better. I would much rather this not happen again for either of you. Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:19, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Dear Highfields,
It is difficult to continuously respond to uncivility in a civil manner. Like when someone is standing there repeatedly yelling at you. It's natural to want to yell back. When I first met Roux, I gave in to the impulse to dish some back. Then I realized I was just as in the wrong as he was, and have endeavored to remain civil ever since. But the damage was already done. My initial uncivil response to his uncivil remarks seems to have started a war that has dragged on ever since.
I'm in the process of seeking a truce with Roux. The Transhumanist 20:31, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

WP:WPOOK

Hello, after this nastly little mess I would like to state my wish to leave the project. You can always rely on my help and support but for now I intend to give the project a break. I'll get back to you later with a final decision. Highfields (talk, contribs) 15:20, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Outline of Knowledge status report

Happy New Year Highfields!

The outline development team wound down over a year ago (after building the country outlines). The start of the New Year seems like a good time to jump start the team back into action.

So I'm clearing away the cobwebs and contacting everyone to get the team back up and running and going full speed ahead.

There are two objectives currently. One is to refine the existing outlines. Two major outlines in the process of being revamped are:

These are a big improvement over the previous versions, but they are incomplete. If you find yourself with a spare moment here and there, please consider chipping in on these. They especially need annotations.

The other objective is to fill in the gaps in the overall network of outlines. We're currently working on sports. Here's what we have so far...

The entries above include descriptive annotations to aid in topic selection. Please add as many missing annotations as you can.

You may have noticed some major sports are missing:

If you are feeling ambitious, please feel free to build one or more of these.

To assist in the maintenance (such as spotting and reversing vandalism) of the outlines and their support pages, please watchlist them. At a minimum, please watchlist the support pages:

The wikiproject page has been overhauled. It includes tasks, guidelines, and a participants list.

See ya there!

Thank you for participating in the rename proposal, by the way.

The Transhumanist 04:17, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Matlock, Derbyshire

I watch this page, and couldn't help but look at your recent edits. I wouldn't normally bother, but I wanted to say thank you and well done. Your additions were really good, plus well referenced as far as I can see, and the images are great. I gather you took them yourself? Anyway, well done and thanks again - HIGHFIELDS (TALK • CONTRIBUTIONS) 16:18, 2 January 2011 (UTC).

Thanks for your appreciative comments. My main source of references were the Conservation Area documents published by Derbyshire Dales District Council. My job was made much easier by these well-researched and comprehensive documents. Davebevis (talk) 13:10, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Outline update 2011-01-18, and an invitation...

We've undergone a name change: the "Outline of Knowledge" WikiProject has been simplified to "WikiProject Outlines".

The current main focus is to increase the availability of outlines. If readers can't find the outlines, the outlines can't help them.

Here's a navigation aid I came across today that I forgot we had:

If you'd like to use the main page with outline links instead of portal links, set Wikipedia:Main Page alternative (outline links) as your default main page. See the instructions.

Due to the occasional sniping attempt on outlines and their support pages, outlines now have an alert page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines/Article alerts. Please go there now and add it to your watchlist.

Tarheel95 and Robert Skyhawk are working on a project to track traffic to outline pages. Speaking of traffic...

A discussion on outline traffic analysis has been started on the Outlines WikiProject talk page. You are cordially invited to participate. Your input is greatly needed on possible ways to increase the availability of the outlines. All ideas and feedback are welcome. I look forward to seeing you there."

Sincerely, The Transhumanist 04:57, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Outline collaboration

Here's the latest addition to the religion section of Portal:Contents/Outlines. Wikipedia has rich coverage on this subject. Very interesting, especially from sociological and historical perspectives.

This is a call to all members of the Outline WikiProject and outline aficionados to help refine this outline. It needs annotations, missing topics added, and the entries in the general concepts section placed in more specific sections.

Come join in on the fun and get acquainted with members of the Outline WikiProject.

This one too :3 Your uploads are really nice! Great gallery ;D SSDGFCTCT9 (talk) 22:55, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! I'll be uploading more, I've got a few of some ads for the Federal election that happened yesterday, as well as some from some travels. Speaking of which, did you hear about that in the UK? Also, I hope you don't mind if I copy your travels section... SSDGFCTCT9 (talk) 20:12, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Eh, didn't think so, but let me tell you, history has been made! It was one of the most intense and exciting elections in a while, and so much came out of it. Would you care for an explanation? SSDGFCTCT9 (talk) 20:52, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Why yes! As I said, travelling is my passion. I suppose I could say going to Vietnam and Japan were my favorites, mostly because I was able to have a human connection with the people there.

And as for the election, you're absolutely right. The Conservative (right-wing Conservative, as if it weren't obvious enough) majority means that Harper can pass whatever his party accepts, and doesn't have to pass it through the others. The Bloc is nearly destroyed (hurrah! I hate separatists), the Liberals got record losses (central-leftists; I don't like them much either) and Ignatieff even lost in his own region, and even though the NDP (socialists; bleh) got some enormous gains, it has less power than it did before because of the Conservative majority. I can honestly see something happening in Canada, for the first time in many many years. I'm not sure if you would, but do you have any opinion on this? SSDGFCTCT9 (talk) 21:00, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Haha, didn't think so, but it was worth a try. It's not as if I know much about British politics, either. SSDGFCTCT9 (talk) 17:55, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

So Bond, do you like travelling too? SSDGFCTCT9 (talk) 17:31, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Mystery

Please solve this mystery if you can...

On September 23rd, traffic to Portal:James Bond doubled, and has stayed at the new level since then. I can't figure out what happened.

See http://stats.grok.se/en/201109/Portal%3AJames_Bond

Traffic to Outline of James Bond stayed the same (though it was at the higher-level already), which leads me to suspect changes made somewhere in Wikipedia.

See http://stats.grok.se/en/201109/Outline%20of%20James_Bond

I'd like to find out what happened, in case it reveals helpful link placement tips that can double the traffic to outlines.

I look forward to your reply. The Transhumanist 22:14, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Annotations needed

The annotating of the entries on Portal:Contents/Outlines is nearing completion.

Annotated entries look like this:

  • Basketball – team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing or "shooting" a ball through the top of a basketball hoop while following a set of rules.
  • Canoeing and kayaking – two closely related forms of watercraft paddling, involving manually propelling and navigating specialized boats called canoes and kayaks using a blade that is joined to a shaft, known as a paddle, in the water.
  • Cricket – bat-and-ball team sport, the most popular form played on an oval-shaped outdoor arena known as a cricket field at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard (20.12 m) long pitch that is the focus of the game.
  • Martial arts – extensive systems of codified practices and traditions of combat, practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development.

Entries needing annotations look like this:

Please go to Portal:Contents/Outlines' and fill in as many missing annotations as you can, even if it's only one or two. Every little bit helps!

Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games

Hi. I am part of an effort to get Wikimedians access to the 2016 Summer Olympics as accredited reporters and photographers. Part of this effort includes covering the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Two Wikimedians have credentials to attend these games as reporters through Wikimedia Australia. As English Wikipedia does not allow original reporting, this is largely through Wikinews with a project page found at Wikinews:Paralympic Games. If you are interested in helping to get Wikimedians to the next Summer Olympics,I'd encourage you to assist with Wikinews efforts, and also to work on all language 2012 Summer Paralympic Wikipedia articles before, during and after the Games to demonstrate a track record of success. Thank you. --LauraHale (talk) 04:40, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Hunting for embedded outlines

I'm looking for outlines embedded in articles.

I've run across a number of these over the years. One example is the Outline of fencing, which used to be part of the fencing article.

If you know about or spot any structured general topics lists in articles, please let me know (on my talk page).

Another thing you might find are articles that are comprised mostly of lists (without "List of" in the title). If you come across any of these, please report them to me on my talk page. I'd sure like to take a look at them.

Happy hunting.

I look forward to "hearing" from you. Sincerely, The Transhumanist 06:55, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Crich Stand

Just a passing thought about this image. Will you please add to the description for this image, details of the tower itself and the two monuments in the foreground and the co-ordinates! — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 10:31, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
