Yes, I know exactly what it means because I wrote it :) In short, Užupis is a district in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania, famous for its artists. And those artists decided one day to declare half-serious Republic of Užupis with its own currency, king, and army. They have festivals each year to commemorate their "independence." The main symbol of Užupis is this angel scuplture, standing in the main square of the district. Something happened some foreign language characters in one of your edits

Hi... I saw an edit you made (via your "tiny plastic" alias) to Ethernet, changing the spelling of "Chaosnet". But in addition to that change, a bunch of the foreign language links were messed up, the text was replaced by question marks. This affected Arabic and Asian links -- but curiously enough, not Cyrillic (Russian) or Greek links. You can see the diffs in [2]. I fixed it, no problem, but I figured I'd mention it because it suggests something went wrong with some browser's international text support. Paul Koning 14:22, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

There are a few people working on various versions, including me, but it's been slow going, and we're all amateurs at this (and it shows). We are keeping everything in a layer-supporting format (or two), so that the work can be passed around, collaborated on, etc. Email me your email address, and I'll gladly send you those. Would you like them in xcf format or psd? Or both?

No one has tried the 3D vector approach yet. I'd really like the images to be photo-realistic. Is that possible?

Anyhow, let me get you up to speed...

On July 15th, I'll be co-coordinating the largest collaborative project I've ever taken on before. Previous collaborations I led or helped lead include the redesign of the Main Page (to its current design), resurrecting the Tip of the Day department, overhauling Help:Contents (including all of its subpages), and the (first) overhaul of Portal:contents and its subpages (which weren't subpages back then - the more recent overhaul didn't change the look, just the page structure).

The collaboration will be run as a competition at the WP:AWC, with each participant using advanced tools like WP:AWB and Linky to complete passes on a set of over 200 draft pages (which will be moved to article space when completed). During each pass, each participant will make a simple change to all the pages. A successful pass is affectionately referred to as "trip around the World".

There will be three types of awards:

The first one will be the "World Traveler Award". Part of it turned out to be copyrighted, and so we've taken a step backward. But the design concept is this: a globe stand with the Earth (NASA's "Blue Marble") in there instead of a globe, with the Wikipedia globe puzzle (completed, without any holes) superimposed upon the Blue Marble. Underneath the stand, laying on the same surface and partially covered by the shadow of the stand, is a customized Passport "To the World", with the golden Wikipedia Puzzle Globe in place of a state emblem. It was almost done when the copyright problem was discovered.

One of the temporary versions of it hasn't been deleted yet - the passport isn't done yet, and wasn't placed quite right, but it gives you an idea what we had:

But I discovered that the picture that the stand was pulled from was copyrighted. So, we either need a new stand (or cage) created from scratch, or find a picture suitable for inserting the Blue Marble and passport into. User:RyRy5 found this picture, that looks pretty cool:

But I think the original one looks nicer. Can you help?

The second award will be a medal. It will have a ribbon that goes around the recipient's neck, and will be swiveled a little to the side so you can see its thickness. One of these will be given out monthly.

I'd like a golden medal with a world map (complete with latitude and longitude lines) engraved or embossed into the medal, with the words "Wikipedia World Traveller" along the outer rim of the medal (parallel to the rim). We're getting there slowly but surely, and so far, we have this, courtesy of User:Penubag:

The words are kind of warped, and the ring (or maybe just its shadows) doesn't seem to integrate into the medal correctly, giving an odd visual effect. And it's missing the latitude and longitude lines. And if it could use the same font used in the Wikipedia logo, that would be great.

The third and greatest of the awards, will be for the championship. This will be held by whoever has completed the most trips in total, and will be passed around to whoever the current champion is. The champion will get to keep the award only until someone else beats his or her record.

This last award must be the most impressive. I'd like it to be a trophy consisting of Atlas standing on a pedestal holding up a golden Wikiglobe instead of the Earth. We haven't even gotten started on this award yet.

As you can see, we need help.  :) And time is running out!

The images

Okay, I did some background research.

• The globe-in-cage one I can do by building a model just like that cage, thus getting the same appearance without the copyright issue. Did you mean that you wanted the puzzle-globe outlines superimposed like in that example, or the puzzle-pieces "built around" a solid core which is the earth? Or perhaps (a concretisation of the former) a puzzle-globe where the puzzle-pieces are segments of the earth? Actually, I'm guessing it's not "built around" since you want the sphere completed and hence you wouldn't be able to see inside.

The globe stand, or "cage", shouldn't match the original. That would make it a derivative work. Whatever you create can't be that particular design. I'm sure you can make one that is as good or better than the original.

Keep in mind that I'm a newb when it comes to graphic design. I did the puzzle pieces that way because it was easier. Ditch my version. What I'd really like is for the grooves between the puzzle pieces to show.

What would be really cool, is if the symbols on the logo could be redone using the same or a similar method as the grooves. That is, being carved into the surface, rather than merely written on it. Can you do that? The modified logo would then be able to be reused in the trophy as well, right?

The surface of the Earth should look like it is comprised of puzzle pieces. I know this doesn't make much sense for the (liquid) oceans, but it still looks cool. It's magic!

• The medal; this should be relatively easy. I'll try building it first of all, and then if there's time I'll try building a neck to pose it on (that's hard to do, so no promises!).

• "Atlas Edited"; the hardest one to do by 3D modelling. As implied just above, modelling humans convincingly is quite difficult. If you wanted a stylised person of some sort it would be easier, or if we were looking down from above the globe so that the detail on Atlas doesn't matter (faces are particularly hard). I can produce a completed puzzle-globe at high resolution from various angles if needed for this, but the final composition should probably investigate other approaches; I probably wouldn't be able to do this one within the time constraints.

So, in summary, I can try for two out of three, and provide a little help for the third if needed. :-) I'm getting some elevation data at the minute to sculpt out the map on the medal, will post some images later on.

We've got another line of development on the trophy which looks like it will be pretty cool. See Penubag's talk page. Please assist him with suggestions, help, etc. Like help him make it look gold (metallic), get the lighting and shadows right, etc.

And maybe you can create the pedestal for it! Something impressive. Talk to Penubag, and see what help he needs.

I was thinking what to put on the four missing visible puzzle-pieces. For the one directly above the Omega-tonos piece, I was going to go with either the Egyptian hieroglyph for "w" (G43, below) or the hieratic equivalent (Z7); above that, Braille w (2-4-5-6, ⠺), and then going to the side we'd have either Linear B wi (U+10039) or Cuneiform (Hittite) wi (U+120FE), and finally Tengwar vilya (U+E017, PUA) up in the far corner. Wikipedia logo

Hello! I heard that you had an interest in fixing up the text on the Wikipedia logo; I'd like to draw your attention to the following, perhaps you can help me with a little background research I'm doing on that same issue.

• Meta-wiki page on the issue (central)
• Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language#Mystery character (attempt to figure out two particular characters; my main stumbling-block!)

We're also bandying about the optional idea of replacing the Klingon piece, since the tlhIngan Hol Wikipedia is no longer around.

I saw your edit to the image fixing the Devanagari and Katakana pieces of course; my own proposal is to remake the 3D sphere rather than fiddling the image (not that your version doesn't look good). Any ideas on the bottom two characters mentioned in those topics linked above? Particularly the edgemost one, it's driving me batty.

I have a plan to get a raytracer to redraw the kana characters since the Japanese I asked said my fix was wrong. I might as well replace the Klingon character once I have the raytracer up and running. I just have to finish my exam in two weeks first... But yes, totally redrawing the logo would also be nice :). It is difficult to tell in the mangled mess of that history, but what I actually did was to revert the logo to the 23:19, 27 June 2004 version. The N was changed in the 18:52, 21 September 2006, which was a scaling down of a larger version of the logo, not an edit. I don't think anyone has ever edited the logo. Medal

Image:Example-WP-World-Dev-Medal.png is the result of my render so far. The image is a bit bright, I need to fiddle with that somewhat as you can't make some of it out (the edge of the medal blurs into the front face, and you can't see wrinkles in the ribbon). Medal specifications

The medal I am seeking needs to have the following details:

It needs to include a world map, not a globe or map of part of the world. Here's a world map I found that I converted to a silhouette. It's not exactly what I'm looking for, but it will help you experiment:

I'm looking for an Aitoff, Hammer, or Mollweide projection of fairly high resolution with solid latitude and longitude lines (not dots) and no words or letters on the map - I can convert almost anything to silhouette, but dots in place of lines do not show well. If you have time, please have a look around (on Wikipedia and off) for public domain world maps. The one we use must be public domain, since the medal will be copyrighted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

By the way, please don't add any frilly things around the world map. It will be very impressive by itself, engraved into or raised above the surface of the medal.

Heh, I can't even recall when I started handing out these tools to new crats. Guess they're random. I'd say your medal is pretty good, all it needs is a gold color gradient. What program did you use to create it? Also, thanks for Wikipedia font, I went over to my mac at work and wrote it out but you made it easier for me as when I brought it over, the whole layer became rasterized, although I expected that, I didn't know how bad it'd turn out after I warped it.
