Ghirlandajo

I am glad to see you say that you have advised Ghirlandajo on his behavior before. It seems to me that we agree there is a problem but we merely disagree as to the solution.

I do grant you that Ghirlandajo has toned it down recently. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were not as many incidents in the last month or two as I had expected.

Certainly it would be best for everyone if Ghirlandajo would take advice from his friends such as you. But now the ArbCom case has already been filed. Currently I feel a little warning from ArbCom may help motivate Ghirlandajo. However, if you feel threats would only alienate Ghirlandajo I am prepared to be convinced.

I feel the most important thing is to get Ghirlandajo to talk about it and acknowledge there is a problem. We simply can't make any progress if he feels we have no right to complain.

I do understand that Ghirlandajo is a major asset to Wikipedia and we would suffer immensely if he left. But if we can't discuss our differences then we can't work together.

I'm asking you, no I'm begging you, to help establish a dialogue with Ghirlandajo. Help him understand that Cowman, or I, or someone else who understands the issues, does not have to be an enemy. (watchlisted you) --Ideogram 14:53, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

My plugin

Hi. I see in recent changes that you're using my plugin. A couple of points:

• You need to change your edit summary, as it currently says "clean up" (the AWB default) :) Change it to something short and sweet like "Bot". Unfortunately AWB insists that the edit summary box contain something otherwise I'd do it all programatically!
• In the last few minutes I released a new version which will remove importance= parameters from MILHIST templates. It's no big deal but you might want to grab that version, up to you.

PD Soviet pictures et al

Are you back? It seems one of these German deletionists is opening a second front: [1]. That is the same guy who is currently trying to get the Reichstag picture deleted on Commons:[2]. Funnily, he is invoking the fact that there is no panorama freedom in France ([3]). Personally, I think that since these statues are government property on a government site, there is no reason here to even invoke panorama freedom. So, like with the Reichstag flag picture they are mixing up German law with the law of the country of origin to construct a possible copyright infringement. But I do not know French copyright law. If you are also active on French Wikipdia, do you know anyone there who knows the French law so that , if this is indeed a new bout of lunacy, it can be stopped? --Pan Gerwazy 22:22, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: Adzhimushkay

Meh, names don't always make sense. ;-)

"Quarry" (or perhaps "quarries") is a more accurate translation of the Russian name, and hence seem to be the one more commonly used in English; I'm sort of hesitant to simply make something up just because it seems more sensible. (Not to mention that "catacombs" has a somewhat different sense in English than it does in Russian.) In any case, though, I'll leave the choice of name up to your discretion. It's absolutely true that Tony Sidaway did make this edit calling another editor something unprintable, but four minutes later he removed it as "not helpful". I wonder if it might be better to withdraw that from the page rather than draw attention to it? David | Talk 21:59, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Battle of Krasnoi

Hi, could you please do me a favour and take a look at the Battle of Krasnoi? There is a war between User:UberCryxic and a newbie, User:Kenmore. The latter started the page but, after UberCryxic's uncooperative edits, blanked the page in frustration. Could you mediate some sort of solution in this content dispute? --Ghirla ^-трёп- 07:49, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

I am glad to know that Ghirlo is up here giving us the most unbiased reports of what's happening (*rolling eyes*). Anyway, there are still some problems with this page Grafik. And now they're major: two versions of the article are emerging and I believe Kenmore has the idea that the top part is "mine" and the bottom part is "his," though I am not exactly sure what he is thinking. All I know is that he is not letting me edit "his part" of the article. I know Kenmore is trying to help and be productive, but my attempts (and those of Kirill as well) to make him understand the policies of Wikipedia have failed. He wrote things in my talk page like:

Don't change my written words...please keep your contributions to the article at the top, in the space that Grafikim reserved for you to write your version of Krasnoi.

I know you like to see pro-French perspectives on 1812…wait until I finish my upcoming Berezina River article. That battle I judge to be (generally) a French victory. I plan to discuss it in detail later on.

I call these battles as I see them…Krasnoi I give to the Russians, Berezina I give to the French.

This is blatant POV pushing (and an odd attempt to strike a deal with me? Berezina is actually a Russian victory, but again I don't know what he's thinking), but the problem is that he will not understand that unless he is familiar with Wikipedia's policies and actually respects them. What do you think we can do about this? I want to address this issue now before Kenmore's edits impact other articles. I believe he can be a very constructive editor, but right now he is behaving in a strange manner.UberCryxic 19:28, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Hey Grafikm, thanks for your intervention at Krasnoi. I just wanted to say that it is fine to advise people to be cool - everyone should - but although well-meaning, it is also slightly disingenuous to give us the same warning in the same tone. Kenmore has carried out some vicious personal attacks against me and for the most part I've ignored them (or haven't replied back in the same sense). Yes, this is a defense of myself. The various requests for articles and images have been consolidated into the combined requests page, which now includes requests for article creation, maps and other images, translation, and article cleanup. Some advice for editors working on featured article candidacies is now available; further suggestions are welcome. A showcase of high-quality articles has been added to the project page; it includes featured and A-Class articles within the project's scope. The Early Modern warfare task force, covering the period from c. 1500 to c. 1792, has been created. A standard category scheme for military conflicts and operations is now available.	Current proposals and discussions Discussion continues about possible enhancements to the project award system. The proposed category scheme for military units and formations is nearing completion; further commments are welcome! A discussion about working on old featured articles with citation problems has begun. Several ideas for new task forces are up for debate.

I have a quick question about this image in the article,
File:Stalin Vasilevsky Rokkosovskiy Mausoleum.jpg,
or rather the caption that goes with it. Are you listing the names in order of rank/importance or in a left-to-right manner? I would think most people would expect the names to be presented left-to-right (especially if they're unfamiliar with the parties by sight), in which case the caption would read "Vasilevsky, Rokkosovskiy, and Stalin, etc.," yes? We need help to ensure the informatin gets added to the infoboxes.
Collaboration of the Month The Collaboration of the Month is going well. This month's Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

In English speaking world there is a thing called Encyclopedia Brittanica[[4]] and Encarta Enclopedia,[[5]] which have more authority than Wikipedia in an acadeic world. In addition, according to the CIA it is also Sokhumi[[6]]. Maybe that's ery tough for a semi-Russian French man to understand the correct spelling, since even french don't know how to spell stuff in their own language. Sosomk 19:10, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

I objected to Ghirla's assaults: 'airing russophobic statements'[7], accusing me and others of tentdentious editing (in portal page not so mild word etc.)[]. Pity you don't comment on Ghirla's accusations on Talk page mentioned. Also, he was waging a one against all battle on the article concerned, and as for trolling - I retain, that there is a remarkable threat, as the block lists warn me.

• the block lists suggest my claim is substantiated
  • Ghirla has been blocked for trolling
• Isn't it against wikipedia rules to take advantage of a portal with the aim of gathering pseudeconsensus (almost similar to voting fraud??)
  • I don't object to mentioning disputed articles, but his way of summarising it might and should be deleted.

Project news Due to the diligance of many editors we now have more than 5000 articles tagged as part of the project. The /Assessment department has been making progress with discussions on the top priority level of novels. These are those articles that should be present in any version of this encyclopedia. The "Members" list has been modified with a short archive or "inactive" list). Member News The project has currently 170 members, 28 joined & 0 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of October 2006. Of these 7 have been moved to a short "Inactive" list due to not contributing to Wikipedia for at least six months. They are free to reactivate themselves at any time, of course!	From the Members Welcome to the sixth issue of the Novels WikiProject's newsletter! Use this newsletter as a mechanism to inform yourselves about progress at the project and please be inspired to take more active roles in what we do. Auto list news The NovelsInCompleteInfobox has been regenerated at the start of October and was shown to have grown rather than shrunk! So this month I have concentrated my efforts (with some help from Grey Shadow (talk · contribs)) on the novels missing "genre" tags. These "genre-less" have now "all" been dealt with. Hopefully we can break the back of this load of work, but it will need help. It would be nice to get these worklists to a state where they can monitor the newly created articles rather than cleaning the retrospective material.
Collaboration of the Month The Collaboration of the Month is going well. October's collaboration was slightly compromised by the removal of our notice early on; however there were still nearly 80 edits to improve the article. This months Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is Doctor Zhivago (novel)
Current debates We have a project structure that allows for the formation of special interest task forces (al la "WP:MILHIST".) This is useful for identifying groups of Novels editors who have a common interest. (i.e. Science fiction novels, Crime Novels, Children's novels, Classic literature, Russian novels etc.) Would there be interest out there in setting one or more of these up. Comments please to the General Forum.
Newsletter challenge Last months Liponym challenge was met by Springeragh (talk · contribs), but the article is still a "very" small stub. The first person to start the article is mentioned in the next newsletter. This months' article is Lawrence Durrell's novel Clea.
