Stavros Damianides

Hi again. Graeme Bartlett I have recently come under some personal attacks by admins of Wikipedia sparked by my edits on the Kastellorizo article. As a consequence you will notice partners or the same person with alternative names, or a gang, have launched personal attacks on every article i have edited. I would like you to initiate a prtoection for the page of Stavros Damianides. He was a well known Bouzouki player in Australia and in his younger days played with the best artists in Greece. He comes from a pre-internet age and few digital sources are around. He shares a similar story to Robert Johnson in the USA where he was never professionally recorded. The other matter is that despite evidence being given of well respected sources, these particular admins have repeatedly attacked and vandalized his entry. The man not only played on his chin as shown in the picture, he was one of the best bouzouki player around. The article was sourced and confirmed because it was essentially part of Wikipedia for 10-15 years. Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Graeme Bartlett. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Military badges

Thank you for following up my speedy deletion tags on Wally Wiglet's files. He seems to have created a one man epidemic of copyvio. Thanks. I see another admin released some of the badges from possible deletion last night because he/she was still only considering the NFU versus Free Use criticism. I've still got another small handful of free use badges from my main donor awaiting uploading but when I'm finished I'll be combing Mr Wiglet's editing history to tag any remaining files which haven't been deleted. I had no idea people could be so blatant in the abuse of copyright. do you think it's because he just didn't know the right way to go about it, or did he know and was trying to bluff his way round the guidelines by inserting these elaborate summaries? I've raised the possibility of an ANI case with someone else privately but he thinks it would be wrong to do that. What's your opinion? I would feel like a real heel doing it but if it has to be done then let's do it. Of course I have little experience in this sort of thing. Chances are he does not know. Most people do not realise they are not allowed to copy images off the web. They may even assume that an image of a public domain object is public domain. WP:AGF applies. Until you talk to the uploader you cannot be sure. Only after lots of warnings and continued infractions will you know if it was blatant knowing infringement with bad faith and no hope of reform. ANI is not the first step, but perhaps step 3 or 4. Yes, I made that very clear to him on his talk page when informing him of what was going wrong. I can see how much work he's done and it's a shame to have to wreck a considerable part of it. I've salvaged a large part of it by finding new badges from a friendly donor but a lot of infoboxes will have no badges on them for a while which is a shame. Well if you received the email perhaps you have revealed your identity! One technique I use if I don't quite trust the receiver is to register another email account on yahoo and send from there to the email of the person I got the Wikipedia email from. The summary for UK badges: If they are old enough crown copyright has expired, before 1946 the design will be public domain in the UK and the USA. After that there is a legal hole where copyright is expired in UK but not legal to copy in the USA. Since the object is 3d a new copyright exists for those that photograph it or draw it. You can photograph it yourself to get your own copyright, but you cannot just take others work. Lastly fair use may apply for the more modern objects. I can see now you were given the wrong information and understand (as I think I did all along) that you didn't set out to do anything wrong. What's been annoying me all along is the amount of your work I've been obliged to destroy. We all know how long it takes to acquire these images, upload them and then insert them into articles. Graeme has got me thinking I can save all the graphics files if I can find a reason to label them {PD Old} and reupload them on Commons as free use files: as I did with many of your badges which I had donated by a non-member. It's a helluva big learning curve mate and I understand the difficulties in trying to recognise the various copyright standards. I need to point out to you that I'm not an admin or copyright enforcer. I'm just an ordinary editor like you so don't think you have to defer to me in anyway. I'm getting into the space of challenging those editors who had 30 days notice that their article was Speedy-able, did nothing, and as soon as the article is deleted they post malformed requests asking for the undeletion. From the ones I've been able to wiki-stalk, the petitioning editor has been idle for a very long time and the indignation they show when they could not take even the minute-est effort to actually do something about the page prior to deletion makes me give them the hard eye. Jaded (Band)

Hey, regarding the declined speedy deletion of this article, I originally tagged it as a hoax, but then changed it because it was not the obvious vandalism I'm supposed to use G3 for. However, looking for sources before I tagged the article, it seems pretty clear to me that all information presented in the article is false, that the band doesn't exist (if they do, nothing covers them), and that they never sold the amount of albums that article says they did. What should I do regarding this? I'm hesitant to immediately send it to AfD because it is obviously a hoax and would probably be an obvious delete. TCN7JM 07:43, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Flag nominations

Hi Graeme. Thank you for your message on my talk page regarding flags I've nominated for deletion. Can we discuss this in more detail because I'd like to save the editor's work if possible. The reason I nominated those particular flags for speedy deletion is because they all appear to be downloads from other websites and are missing permission from the author of the images. From what I have read before nominating them is that this makes them copyvio and eligible for speedy deletion. Is there a way round this? SonofSetanta (talk) 09:41, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Take a read of Wikipedia:Non-free content. Some content can be used without permission. Things that are used to identify the organisation. This can be logos, flags, seals or badges. However if they are replaceable by a free image that is better. There is no need to lodge a PUF entry fo something used under fair use, becase we expect it to be unfree. Ok. I've read that and now understand what is required. I'll check through the graphic files from yesterday and ensure all the {Puf} tags are removed and leave a message for Wally to that effect. All of this is still a learning curve for me but it'll help me in the future when doing similar things myself. I can assure you I won't be applying for a post as a copyright enforcer. It is good to have a source. Since one requirement is that the item has been published, and it is important that we know it is genuine. Also your image is low resolution. The portion used is probably the front (if this is a badge). If it was issued in 1945 then it would be public domain. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 06:56, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Regarding the flags and badges, I drew them myself using Inkscape and the Gimp but, obviously, I based them on other images. For example:

• The Devon and Dorset Regiment Colour is based on this.
• The Assaye Colour is based on images here and here.
• The Royal Tank Regiment Distinction was based on a slightly larger version of this, which I cannot now find.
• The Naval Crown was based on an image here.
• The Royal Artillery Distinction was based on an image here.

I can dig out the rest if you need, but these should give you an idea of what I was doing. I thought they were original enough to qualify as my own work (obviously, if they did not resemble the originals there would have been no point in drawing them) but please let me know what copyright tag and source I should have used. DYK Nomination

Hi Graeme, I found your name on a list of active DYK reviewers. I've submitted the Charles R. Chickering (artist) article for DYK nomination, which I created shortly before its nomination. It was approved by one reviewer but with a reservation about wording in the hook, so we need another opinion. Could you check it out if and when you have the time?

Also, I am reviewing some other DYK nom's but being sort of new at it, I'm having a difficult time checking for QPQ. Is there an easy (or easier) way to do this besides combing through someone's contrib's? -- Gwillhickers 18:31, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Usually they will indicate on the nomination if they have done one. But on the one you considered it was not a self nomination, so no QPQ was required. Also a move into article space counts as the date created. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 10:59, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. As I said, I'm knew at DYK reviews. Also, my Charles R. Chickering (artist) nomination is no longer listed under Sept. 6, and it has not hit the main page yet. What happened? What is really strange is that when I went to View history, for Sept. 6, it's not listed there, while there are edits made on Sept. 11. Okay, after a little digging I found out the article was promoted by Allen3, so I guess it will take some time before it appears on the main page. However, I am still puzzled that it doesn't show up in View History, and that edits made on the 11th show up under View History for the 6th. Your dates are being confused because there is a template transcluded on the Template:Did you know nominations page and the real page you should look at the history of is Template:Did you know nominations/Capture of the Dutch fleet at Den Helder: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Did_you_know_nominations/Capture_of_the_Dutch_fleet_at_Den_Helder&action=history I agree that the referencing is not good enough, and if no one will fix it it will miss out. Thanks for the info! Some wording (near paraphrasing) issues came up, after the nomination was promoted, which I have resolved and I was hoping you could take another peek at the nomination if you have the time, as things seem to be moving kinda slow over there.

Accepting a G13-eligible submission

Hi Graeme, I'm one of the developers for the Article for creation helper script. I saw your comment at User_talk:Hasteur#Bot_limits:

I still find about 1 in 20 articles queued for G13 delete that were worth accepting as they were. My complaint about the AFC tools is that you cannot accept a declined article. So then I have to do it by hand, more work, and not all the bits get done then (like notification).

...And thought I could help! I've updated the source code to display the "Accept" link for all G13-eligible nominations, even if they've already been declined. It won't be available in the main gadget for a few weeks, but you can install this mirror script for access to the functionality now (you may have to WP:BYPASS your cach). Speedy deletion declined

Hello, you declined The Makerz speedy deletion saying, "person in this had article" I do not know what the means, but neither of the members of the production group ever had articles they were both redirects to this article (seemingly created to make it seem as if they did have articles). Also according to the article their only production credits were to two not notable songs, definitely not enough notability to pass A7. STATic message me! 04:09, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

I am acting on behalf of User talk:158.28.225.226 who asked on the WP:REFUND page. They gave this statement: "Guitar effects pedal manufacturer, now defunct, with previously sold pedals becoming very expensive and high prices demanded in the boutique and second-hand market." It was previously deleted with a PROD process, so I undeleted it and removed the prod tag. Anyone can challenge a prod. There were some references despite what your prod statement said. I was considering whether to just close off the discussion or just remove the comment.. The reason I called the comment a troll comment was that it was obviously designed to stimulate an argument. Especially since a recent RFC on the subject was closed, I did not appreciate starting an argument on the topic again. I think that there's a general problem of home page content having certain topics over-represented, possibly including Gibraltar, mushrooms, professional sports, and video games. Hi and thank you for the rapid response! I will definitely look into adding a section with the Kubler index as well as other prior methods. Also you mentioned leaving the sandbox. I am not yet a wikipedia pro, so i may or may not have messed up when trying to get the page to be titled "Illite crystallinity". I hope i didnt make the page live or anything like that. Also to change the "C" in the page title to a "c" do i need to move the page or can this be edited?

there is some debate at iron(II) hydride you may not be aware of. It is just BH3 and GaH3 all over again, the articles misleadingly read as if the amphotericity refers to the molecular form but any references (as expected) go back to either the dimer (in the case of BH3 and GaH3) or complexes. You can then put your reviewer/edit comments there. Otherwise, if you'd prefer to see a "formal" peer review first, WP:PR is the place i will go first. Any preference for option one or option two? Please de-authorise AWB of User:ChrisGualtieri

Please remove the AWB authorisation of User:ChrisGualtieri. He's recently been warned by multiple editors about disruptive editing without effect, and acknowledged it by deleting the warnings from his talk page, then proceeded to make several hundred more edits without visible effect, in blatant and wilful disregard for the AWB rules of use and the requests and then demands of the community. I think there has been a misunderstanding here. And that is partly my fault. The edits which are shown to "convict" me are actually WP:CHECKWIKI Fixes. Specifically Checkwiki error #61, reference before punctuation. It has consensus, it impacts the page, it is specifically mentioned in WP:MOS as MOS:REFPUNC. Many of the edits include additional fixes. Such as LATISM – Orphan tag, multiple issue tag, #61 [1] Lateralization of brain function, #61, spacing per mos, spacing after punct for ref. [2], K-epsilon turbulence model – link text same as link, #61, false br, pipe in external link, uncategorized tag added [3], Joe Lamont, fixed broken link, added persondata, #61 – [4], Jessica Mauboy - #61, reforder, combine duplicate ref – [5]. While far from being the greatest edit in the world, it has consensus and even Yobot routinely fixes these. I'd also like to note that the issue Josh Parris brought up was not repeated and I did actually bring the discussion up at User_talk:Magioladitis#Questions after Parris's warnings while I was offline. I am not angry over AWBs removal, given the appearances, but I would like it restored as the edits which resulted in its removal do have consensus. ChrisGualtieri asked me to comment here: I would suggest the following: ChrisGualtieri please do not remove any comments from your talk page and assume good faith in people critising some of your edits. Please user more informative edit summaries to at least display your main goal each time. I also suggest that you start doing some typo fixing with AWB to slow your edit rate. I also think that there was a misunderstanding on this last series of edits and I personally encourage editors to fix pages according to the Manual of Style but you need to be more careful in the future. To be fair, I had a rough day and I backed them out it out when I saw Lucia Black's post at the end. I didn't realize the template substitutions were not covered by any consensus yet and I did not repeat the edits that caused concern - but I suppose it my method of relaxing, which I find such fixing to be, caused some issues. I compiled with the warning; but I was not in the mood to argue or fight - in hindsight it was better to leave it and make a post of acknowledgement because I doubt Parris read the other post on your page as to my inquiry. The problem that I saw was asking to rename files that have almost the right name. The policy says do not rename. Renaming files is usually disruptive for reusers of our content, so there has to be a good reason to rename, such as a useless, misleading or offensive name. I try to find misleading, offensive, cruel, degrading and etc. (file names that might fall under WP:CRD or WP:BLP violations) files, but it is very hard, especially at the upload log, when I see a file that needs to be renamed, that is misleading I place the {{Rename media}} template ASAP and later on it gets deleted under the file speedy deletion policy (most likely due to improper source, permissons or copyvios and etc.), so you probably didn't see it there in my file contributions. Also it is quite hard in finding misleading titles in files since I might not have knowledge in the subject. I requested the file mover user group so I could help in renaming files, although my file contributions may show I don't have familiarity with the policy. page deletion

Hello I am writing to find out why my page was deleted. The page name is Taipei Adventist American School. It says it was deleted for copyright infringement. I guess i don't understand what was wrong with the page as it was information about our school. If there was a problem perhaps i could fix it and then improve the page before it gets deleted.

The problem was that it copied writing from http://taas-taiwan.com/?page_id=2 We require that the text is free to copy. The school website did not grant us a free license to copy it. If the school web site is yours you can put a CC-BY-SA-3.0 license on it of you want Wikipedia to be able to have a copy of text from it. Else you are welcome to rewrite in your own words. If you have the tools to work at WP:AFC then why not? The main requirement is "move". There is a good gadget to help with review that you can pick at preferences. But if it is declined already or not submitted, then it does not work and everything has to be done manually. It might be counted as edit warring if you counteract someone who declined an article, but I think our reviewers are too ready to reject contributions. G5 deletions

I've noticed a number of G5 declines from you recently with edit summaries indicating that you do not feel that being created by a blocked or banned editor is sufficient reason to delete an article. Creation by a blocked or banned editor that is violating a block or ban is sufficient reason to delete an article. If you personally do not feel comfortable processing G5 deletions, please do not interfere with the deletion process by removing the tag: just let it sit until another administrator processes it. If you think that G5 is a bad reason to delete articles, then get a community consensus to rewrite WP:BLOCK, WP:BAN, and WP:CSD. G5 deletions do not have to take place if the article is a benefit to Wikipedia. Nominators for G5 are often not supplying sufficient evidence that the article was created problematically. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:57, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

Insufficient evidence for you to delete, perhaps, but those are personal criteria. To delete under G5, all that is necessary is to demonstrate that the article was created by an editor that was violating a block or ban. There are no other criteria for a G5 deletion. As I said, if you feel that G5 should have additional criteria, it's certainly reasonable for you to attempt to gain consensus to modify the criteria. If you have qualms about processing G5s, it's perfectly reasonable for you to skip them when processing speedy deletions. What isn't appropriate is for you to interfere with the deletion process or tell editors that G5 has additional criteria. It doesn't. The criterion is simple and direct:"Pages created by banned or blocked users in violation of their ban or block, and which have no substantial edits by others". google scholar is likely to have more reliable sources. The draft still does not have independent sources though. So you may need to find writings that reference Hood and see if they cover the person and not just his work. Though mostly you do not get to see content, so you have to still look in a big library to read the actual content. News sources may serve you better. I and User:Keilana are OAs for a course project in Molecular Biology, taught at John Hopkins University for the upcoming Spring, 2014 semester. We ran the same course last semester, and you can check out the course page. I will be putting together the new course pages (two, one each for two sections) for the upcoming semester in the next couple of days.

We are wondering if you would be willing to help with this. Mostly, it involves hand-holding and answering questions for students who are new to Wikipedia. However, we also hope that you would be able to help review articles as they become mature, during the review cycles in units 9, 11, and 13. Here is an example review by Keilana.

Depending on how many other OAs we get, we'd be asking for commitment of between two - four reviews for each of those three cycles, and each might take about an hour.

Self-requested blocks

Hello, Graeme. For some time I have been considering possibly adding myself to Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to consider placing self-requested blocks. Before doing so, I thought it might help to see what a few of those already in the category think about a few matters. I should be grateful if you would give me an idea, via either talk page or email, of your ideas on the following questions.

1. Why do you think it is that such requests are commonly refused? (Obviously, in a way this is more suitable as a question for admins who are not willing to consider placing self-requested blocks, but you may have some thoughts on the matter.)
2. Some admins in the category have a list of requirements for such blocks, but as far as I can see you don't. Do you actually have such a list? If not, do you just take the line "I will block you if you ask me to", or would you refuse a request unless you thought it was suitable?
3. In your experience, how often, if at all, do you get such requests?
4. Do such blocks ever cause problems of any sort, and if so, how? JamesBWatson (talk) 15:28, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

1. I do refuse some requests. The reason may be that there is no reason given. Another possible thing is that the person is already under a cloud and discussions are already taking place about a ban, then I let that run its course.
2. I will decide on each request as it comes. They are not so common for me to have any criteria, and you are the first to suggest that I could have a written list available.
3. There might be one request per year.
4. I don't know of problems. The person might change their mind and email to be unblocked. But you just consider why they asked in the first place then! It is no big deal, and I think you would hardly notice the difference in your life by adding that category! Graeme Bartlett (talk) 19:41, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

NIAMA-REISSER Technology Article Help

Hello there. I would kindly like to ask you to read the article in its entirety and give three examples of advertisement in the article. I have edited the article more than four times now. One admin undeleted the article once before, but Trivialista and Tokyogirl, etc. other users believe it still to be advertisement. The Columbus Dispatch wrote an article about it. The C. Dispatch is the biggest Newspaper in Ohio and the article was on the cover. The company was in TV broadcasts, where reporters reported about the tech, etc. The company showcased their products at a booth at the geneva auto convention in Switzerland. The Article was written in a way to show how the technology works. To my knowledge there is no sentence or phrase contained within the body of the article that coould allure advertisement. Regardless, maybe you can help me and point out the sentences that would deem it so, if there are any. I am new to wiki and haven't contributed anything other than the article. There are many articles like HuettlinKugelmotor, EcoMotors, FelixWankel that are written in the same fashion and style. I believe to get singled out here. Maybe you can help. Thanks, for your time

Yeah, Graeme. I am also a student of statistics, or maybe was, some years ago. I feel though I should leave the figures as-is. It could be an idiosyncrasy of french scientific practice or of this research in particular. On a casual read, you'd notice that the original french source uses 5% throughout. I'd propose I change your edit back to 5% and leave it as-is. If you disagree with me, then I'd go to google forums and ask some chemist or physicist about it. Thanks. AutoWikiBrowser request

Hello, I'm Kkj11210. I was the user who recently made a request on the AutoWikiBrowser page which you've declined. First of all, I was wondering if the types of edits were necessary for approval of the page. The Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage states that only 500 mainspace edits are necessary. But in the case that the types are distinguished, I would like to explain my reasons for the contributions and the request for AWB

I would like to use AWB to perform main cleanups of Korean articles. For instance, the first goal that I've set was using AWB to change the outdated address systems to newer systems, which I've discussed here. I believe that AWB can help a lot with that. Moreover, there are other general cleanups like the cases above which AWB will really be helpful with. Following the idea, I've been mostly doing vandalism reverts because I was waiting for the AWB access. If you look at the 500th to 1000th contributions, you can see that I had been contributing to Korean articles; I've stopped since I wished to start general cleanups first, then move onto individual articles. Talk:Soccer in Australia

Can you explain your removal of my comment on the above talk page, while leaving the previous one which discussed my "sheer ignorance" (three times) and my " narrow mindedness", among other things? I have tried incredibly hard to keep discussion polite in that thread in recent times, and that other editor, Orestes1984, has been doing precisely the opposite. He will take delight in you removing my comment and leaving his (along with several others where he abused me). He will count it as a win, and refer to it in future battles as proof that this place disapproves of my position in that discussion. I believe that your action will just encourage his already bad behaviour.

Note that I'm not too concerned about my comment being removed. It didn't add to the conversation as a whole. It was a hope that we could all get closer to the point. Removing my comment in isolation is the problem. HiLo48 (talk) 21:27, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Since this involves me let me discuss this:

Firstly, while knowing full well I am talking with an administrator and pushing a rock up hill... Oh well, such is life, as they say.... You have pushed me to the point where I simply do not care what consequences my actions take when it comes to dealing with you as you are impossible to deal with as an editor, it really does remind me of some of the editors over at Macedonia naming dispute and other similar pages on Wikipedia where editors hold such a conservative religious (see your dictionary in the sense of feverent support for one side), based view on their opinions that any discussion leads to a "flame war" and so I simply avoid these parts of Wikipedia to prevail my own sanity... Congratulations, that really does take a lot of effort.

Secondly, I don't count this as a "win" it is most definitely not a "win" and as noted by other administrators, you really shouldn't see this as a childish "win," "lose" situation.... the fact that you see this as a "loss" is indicative of how you deal with these situations which is little better than school yard children's bickering. You simply either do not know how to resolve conflicts in an adult manner, or simply do not care to. I don't deal in life in terms of "win" or "loss" but it seems Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian rules football takes great pride in their "win" by enforcing the name soccer on a sport they broadly have little interest in to the point where they attempt to enforce their meat puppetry in article name disputes in New Zealand here a country that is not even relevant to this ongoing dispute. You may wish to see the userbox here here to see what I'm talking about.

I look at the end game and if that involves calling it for what it is, in spite of the consequences then so be it.... Unfortunately it's the narrow minded Australian mentality to see riling someone to the point where they don't care about what they say anymore as a "win" and if you want to look at it from a childish perspective, then you are the winner HiLo48, so congratulations!. In this case I am just trying to control users attacking other users. I may have missed some messages, and if the only purpose of the article talk page messge is to attack someone else then it can be removed. Just complaining is not a reason to remove, but may be a reason to close the discussion. Please stick to the topic of the article page. I won't be closing any discussions I have participated in. Before ARBCOM take this on there must be attempts to sort this out, but I don't think there has been much effort on this yet. Hi Graeme, thanks for introducing yourself to me. I'm new to Wikipedia editing. I would love to visit Austalia someday. There are so many cool and intersting things there that I would love to see, such as the stromatolites in Sharks Bay or some of the great fossil beds. I would also love to see the southern constellations and view alpha centauri b for myself. Molecular biology is pretty awesome and I'd love to tell you about it. I may need help with a few Wiki things. For one thing, when I was practicing in my sand box I tried to use the Cite button but I couldn't pull up any articles or books from it like I saw in one of the tutorials. Uploading chemical compounds/organic compounds/synthetic compounds

Hey Graeme,

I was trying to upload an image of a molecule "Aminoallyl-UTP" from Chemcyte however, I don't think I did it right as it will be deleted. I wasn't sure how it works with chemical structures because it isn't art based and thought if I was going about it in a conservative manor it would be ok, I'm not sure how this fits into wiki as anyone can draw the same compound easily (even better if I knew how to write in SVG). Hi Graeme, I was wondering how you view another users sandbox page? I'm supposed to be working on an article with my class partner in our sandbox area. I can see her user page and talk page but not sandbox. references disappeared

Hey Graeme! Sorry to bother you again so soon--I found the move button and I'm gonna take a minute to do that--seems simple enough.
