File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Monument in the college premises in memory of Rajan officers who sacrificed their lives in service of the motherland.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. — neuro(talk) 04:12, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dharmaraja College, Kandy edit

Nice work on Dharmaraja College, Kandy article. Excellent contribution. But the article needs a bit more work. The wording on the intro and history would need some wort to make it sound less of a official web site and more like a encyclopedic article. Just have a look around a few articles on schools and universities. And I think Olcott was Colonel Olcott not Sir Henry coz he was an American. Finally have a look around how the alumni sections have been written, categorizes it a bit more. good luck Cossde (talk) 04:23, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

About the recent changes, I can'nt condemn it as vandalism since that user has removed parts (even though they have been there for some time) that are not encyclopedic. The aim of a wiki article is to provide unbiased encyclopedic information. The items the user has removed is very much suited for a fan site. Look at the edits for the intro, The introduction for a article in wiki is a summary of the information in the article note a editorial. I am a afraid I cant say anything against the user's work. This is why I told earlier that "The wording on the intro and history would need some wort to make it sound less of a official web site and more like a encyclopedic article. Just have a look around a few articles on schools and universities." . Keep up the good work & let me know if you need any help.Cossde (talk) 10:48, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with File:Wimalaratne Kumaragama.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Wimalaratne Kumaragama.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by STBotI. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 08:18, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:TBKehelgamuwa2.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:TBKehelgamuwa2.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 05:30, 26 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of A. E. Goonesinha edit

A tag has been placed on A. E. Goonesinha requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. • Hi. Per the above message, it's OK to create a new article using the original as a reference, but the end result has to be in your own words. No need to ask permission, but thanks for being so thoughtful.  :) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 16:55, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi again. Much better, but it is really biased and compromised with personal opinion. WP:MOS might be of help and I can try and clean it up a bit myself. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 17:08, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thanks for the info. Would appreciate if you could rectify the parts compromised with personal opinion. Eventually, I'll try to put them in a better way.. Thanks. Gihaned (talk) 17:13, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • You got it. In fact, I've already started in. I don't have time to complete it, though. Feel free to add whatever you'd like to help flesh it out and I'll follow up later. Seems to me like this guy should have had himself an article a long time ago and for a first effort, your article is a winner. It may be a candidate for the "Did You Know?" section of the front page once it's cleaned up. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 17:53, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Thanks a lot. I'll also be editing it constantly since I got it in now, and will add whatever I find, whenever I can. Yeah, it's a real pity he didn't have an article on wiki. Even some of his disciples (unheard of, among the Sri Lankan public); have wiki articles. Thanks again.. Gihaned (talk) 17:58, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Would be more than glad if it'd be candidate for the "Did you Know?" section!! I'm sure you'd do a marvelous job with grooming it to a nice article.. Gihaned (talk) 18:10, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for File:AEGoonesinha1.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:AEGoonesinha1.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:44, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

We're darn close... edit

It still reads a bit promotional and even a bit gushing in spots, but it is wonderfully informative overall. It won't take much to bring this up to standards. Terrific, terrific first effort on your part! --PMDrive1061 (talk) 04:29, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use File:WGopallawa.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:WGopallawa.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 19:17, 7 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:AEGoonesinha2.jpg edit

Thank you for uploading File:AEGoonesinha2.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. obi2canibetalk contr 12:00, 7 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka edit

Dear Gihaned,

Thank you for your contributions to the Wikimedia Projects. As an editor from Sri Lanka, you are warmly invited to join the official Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka and to subscribe to its mailing list, Wikimedia-LK.

The user group currently includes volunteers from Wikipedia and other projects, from the English, Sinhala, and Tamil speaking communities. It is the Wikimedia-approved platform for editors from Sri Lanka to enable wider collaboration, for both online and offline projects.

With your support, we hope to organize cross-project content improvement drives as part of online projects, as well as organize in-person edit-a-thons, training sessions, photowalks, and other such activities, in the near future. The ultimate goal(s) of these initiatives is to improve the overall coverage and quality of topics relating to Sri Lanka, as well as encourage new editors to join the Wikimedia community, while simultaneously empowering and retaining our existing team of editors.

There are no mandatory obligations for members who choose join the community, other than the usual editing rules for online projects, and the friendly space policy for in-person projects. You may also (or instead) subscribe to the mailing list, where any member could initiate discussions with volunteers across projects, notify members of events and meetings, stay up to date with competitions, organize your own events, and so on.

See you on board, and Happy Editing!
