Well, the term Abkhazians in its largest meaning may refer to Georgians as well as ethnic Abkhaz, but this meaning is considered (unfortunately) obsolete. In modern times, Georgians of Abkhazia identify themselves as Georgians, and Abkhaz as Abkhaz. However, I do agree with you that the true Abkhzians are an offshoot of the greater Colchian ethnos. I understand your reasoning, but the term Abkhazians changed its meaning over time. Sad but true. --Kober^Talk 08:43, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Of course. I understand your point and agree with you, but the people whom we now call Abkhaz are ethnically and linguistically different from Georgians and cannot be classified as an ethnographic group. They used to be part of the Georgian cultural and political world, but Islamization and Russification significantly changed their orientation. As we all know, the name Abkhazian formerly referred to all inhabitants of Western Georgia, i.e. Colchis, but then narrowed to denote a single ethnic group (Apswa). I don't live in Abkhazia so I can't comment for them but I would rather use books of reliable scholars (Strabo, Javakhishvili, etc.) about Abkhazians rather than original research and modern political literature. Giglia 09:30, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Re:Georgians

I basically agree with you but let's have everything as it is now because the article itself is in a very poor condition and the introduction is by far the only portion which contains a stable and readable prose. I think we should first expand and improve the main text and then shorten the intro. I agree with you that it is too large. Btw, "Sub-ethnic communities" does not mean that Mergels and Svans are ethnically different, but refers to them being a subdivision within the Georgian ethnos.
