Hi

George, you said "Here are the sources from Google. Also, use template:cite book/doc for instructions." I have to say I don't like that template and don't use it. But anyway, I stand by the album not being the only use of the Chinese phrase or even the most notable. It requires (album) at minimum. Cheers. In ictu oculi (talk) 03:22, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Jumper (pornographic film)#Plot

A Boy was Born

Your comment on the article talk is too difficult for me to understand. If you show an image of a yellow flower, you can't say "red flower" in a caption. With an mage of "A Boy was Born", you can't have "A Boy Was Born" in a caption. You can omit it, but not contradict the image, I think, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:42, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

In hoc signo vinces

Actually, I'm not sure why that should be done — it's only had three reverted edits in the past month, and I don't see why we need to have any kind of protection for such a low level of problematic editing. Do you have a reason why I should change my mind? Nyttend (talk) 11:07, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

I thought that infrequently-edited pages are qualified for PC. Do frequently-edited pages also apply? --George Ho (talk) 15:08, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
I'm actually referring to infrequency of reverted edits, not infrequency of edits in general; my point was that we don't have enough disruption to warrant either PC or semiprotection, simply because the problem edits are so rare, so we can easily get rid of them. PC in particular is bad for frequently-edited pages; if I remember rightly, this is because it will produce a massive log of edits waiting for review. Nyttend (talk) 17:15, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
Recently, someone tried to add an uncited statement; it was reverted. The topic is a one-millennium-old Latin phrase, yet it is not well-known. Also, the article has been prone to additions of uncited statements, especially for the whole year. It may be left unchecked, unless someone randomly looks at it, sees something wrong with it, and fixes it. --George Ho (talk) 03:40, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
It still doesn't seem appropriate to me, simply because of the low level of disruption. You may actually do best to request advice from administrators in general (go to WP:AN and explain the situation carefully), or to request page protection from someone else (go to WP:RFPP and request protection, giving your reasoning carefully), since I don't deal with protection as often and might be unaware of common practice in some way. No matter what you do, you need to be careful to note that I suggested that you ask elsewhere — if you mention our discussion and don't mention that I suggested going elsewhere, people may tell you to wait until I've offered an opinion, or they may think you're admin-shopping for a better answer. Nobody's going to complain about this kind of thing if you let them know that it was my idea. Nyttend (talk) 05:37, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
Hm, I just realised that you've been here since 2006, and I was giving you instructions like a newbie; I'm sorry for the unwarranted condescension. Nyttend (talk) 05:38, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Matt Damon - GA Reassessment

Hi George,

I posted an assessment of the Matt Damon for the GA Reassessment request. Do you mind taking a look at Talk:Matt Damon and let me know what you think. I'm not sure if the intention is to get the article spiffed up - or just to know that status and potentially remove the GA pass icon.

I'm happy to help get it cleaned up if the intention is to clean it up.--CaroleHenson (talk) 16:56, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

I just posted a request banner, so I have no opinions on the article itself. However, I helped you create Talk:Matt Damon/GA1 by cutting and pasting from the talk page. --George Ho (talk) 22:58, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
Cool, thanks! I wonder what happened to the original GA1 page, hmm.
What inspired you to post the request banner (i.e., time since reviewed, something else)?--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:13, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
I saw "2008" as the latest year of GA review. I figured that the article has had flaws for six years since. --George Ho (talk) 23:18, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
Gotcha, makes sense. Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 00:49, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
By the way, you may want to read WP:GAR. Also, notify the article's major contributors. --George Ho (talk) 06:23, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi George,
Thanks! Adding the {{subst:GAR}} at the top of the page seems to create a duplicate banner box + the link goes to a new page, incremented to Talk:Matt Damon/GA2.
Should I do that and then move the info from the GA1 --> GA2?
Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 15:04, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
I'm just going to go ahead and create the GA2 page and add a redirect from GA1, so it doesn't foul up the process.--CaroleHenson (talk) 15:20, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
I requested merging history logs of GA1 and GA2 in WP:REPAIR. Don't move any content or rename the page; you can continue reviewing and wait for someone to fix this. --George Ho (talk) 16:39, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
Ok, cool, Thanks, obviously I was confused.--CaroleHenson (talk) 17:21, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi George, Since the Matt Damon article was my first reassessment, do you mind taking a quick peak at Talk:Matt Damon to see if I finished it correctly? I updated the article history... and supplied a conclusion at the end of the transcluded doc. Thanks so much for bearing with me through this!

Oh, by the way, I notified the major contributors - but many of them had retired / stopped working on Wikipedia.--CaroleHenson (talk) 20:05, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

You technically closed your reassessment correctly; I recommend not to remove transclusion of your reassessment. Reading WP:GAR again, if you aren't confident in your reassessment abilities, try "community reassessment" then. Well, you have been a major contributor recently, but I don't see it as a major issue for now. To start a "community reassessment", use {{subst:GAR}} and click "community reassessment". But I don't think a "community reassessment" is necessary for now unless delisting may be controversial. --George Ho (talk) 20:21, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
I'm not concerned about my ability to assess a GA article -- and that's really was a reassessment is, right? I think some of my edits went a bit beyond GA criteria, but I like to leave it as polished as I can. So, I don't think we need to start a community reassessment. And, I think I read GAR thoroughly enough... but there's not a lot of detail there, so that's why I thought I'd check in with you.
Yep, it makes sense to keep the transclusion... especially since with a little time to settle, I am guessing there might be edits or questions that may arise and it's good to have the history.
I think we're good for now. Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 20:47, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

Under a Vast Sky

Can I ask why you moved it? The song is known in English by its English name and not its pinyin name, and your move therefore appears to violate WP:USEENGLISH and WP:COMMONNAME. -- Ohc ¡digame! 15:54, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Show me sources that use the English name. I'll find them in Google. --George Ho (talk) 18:10, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
I couldn't find either titles in Books, but I found news articles. I don't see such articles as prevalent enough to persuade me into preferring one title or another, but "Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies" seems more accurate. --George Ho (talk) 18:42, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Accuracy isn't the prime criterion for a namespace. It's the one used by reliable sources. But what I really object to is the nonsense pinyin name that nobody uses. Can you please move it back? Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 00:05, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Well, I think RM is best preferred. Nevertheless, no books on Google Books have used either name. Why counting on recent news articles? --George Ho (talk) 00:43, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

I was able to improve Hoi Fut Tin Hung. However, I could not understand Chinese while I was searching the song by using "Beyond 海闊天空". Wouldn't improving the article be better than spending time on the title itself? --George Ho (talk) 00:47, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

  • It's important, and I thank you for it. But form, and the name is also important. The song has an English name by which it's known (I'm not arguing which, BTW). I'm just saying "Hoi Fut Tin Hung" is meaningless mumbo jumbo, and the article shouldn't stay there. Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 02:32, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Do you know how to set up a page move proposal? If not, read WP:RM for instructions then. --George Ho (talk) 02:33, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes I do, but you're missing the point. You moved it and I object. I will if you make me by refusing to move it back, but I was hoping we could resolve this amicably between the two of us. You have filemover rights, so you can easily move it back without any fuss, so please will you do it without making me jump through the hoops? Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 02:46, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Which one: "Under a Vast Sky" or "Boundless Ocean, Vast Skies"? If the former, I can't. If the latter, ...well, I can't tempt myself into moving it just because it's more accurate translation. WP:UE and WP:NCUE conflict with WP:PINYIN (wait, it's) WP:NC-ZH. Also, translating "Hoi Fut Tin Hong" has been an idiom long before Beyond sang its own song with the same idiom words in 1993. I want to hear people's opinions first. --George Ho (talk) 02:55, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Both are "accurate" because there are two ways of translating. One is to translate literally word for word ("Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies"), another is to take the meaning and translate that instead ("Under a Vast Sky"). -- Ohc ¡digame! 03:10, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

By the way, we can't edit war further per WP:3RR. You must undo your reverting my link changing due to my renaming the article. --George Ho (talk) 03:01, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

  • You don't seem to understand. There is nothing in any of the sources used in the article (or sources anywhere, for that matter) that identify the anthem as "Hoi Fut Tin Hung", so I'm going by what's in the source. It's happening because you moved the article to a nonsense namespace. The link being used now (Under a Vast Sky) is fine, even though it's a redirect. That's what they are for so the us is perfectly acceptable. We're arguing over the namespace for the article, and that's a separate discussion. Regards, -- Ohc ¡digame! 03:10, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
...I don't know what to tell you. At least... why not use both English names of the Cantonese song in the article? --George Ho (talk) 03:14, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
From the viewpoint of professional translation, I prefer "Under a Vast Sky" by far. There really isn't much point in literally translating many idioms: just take for example 人山人海 or 自食其果, for these are utterly meaningless. ;-)
I've added alternative English title with different source unless you want to revert it back to just one English title. Off-topic: what about dandan youqing; will you propose renaming that Chinese album? --George Ho (talk) 03:56, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

re Nominating Bucko for DYK

I don't really participate at DYK anymore these days but I'd be most happy if someone else wanted to nominate it instead of myself. :)

How about maybe:

... that reviewers compared the writing style of comic Bucko to The Big Lebowski and screenwriter Raymond Chandler?

How's that?

Cirt (talk) 16:09, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

George Ho, perhaps a picture to go along with your nomination, maybe something from commons:Category:Erika Moen ? — Cirt (talk) 02:03, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Or perhaps this image might be a nice one to use, let me know what you think? — Cirt (talk) 02:43, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
I shrunk the image to 180px in the article. To make the image useful, the pictured subject must be mentioned in another ALT hook. What about her "simple drawing"? --George Ho (talk) 02:55, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
There are a couple sourced quotes in the article that refer to the pictured subject, including: "Artist Moen’s work is lively, capturing the action of the script perfectly and bringing the characters to energetic life." or "Erika Moen’s gorgeously simple drawings" or "it's Moen ... who really sells the story, with a lighthearted illustration style" or "Moen's clever drawings are a pleasure to behold." -- what do you think is best? — Cirt (talk) 03:00, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Doesn't matter, but they must be rephrased. If not, well... exact quotes I wouldn't recommend. Just quoted phrases would do. --George Ho (talk) 03:03, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Okay, well those are a few good options for you, shouldn't be too hard to rephrase, right? Let me know if you need help with that? — Cirt (talk) 03:09, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
  • ... that Erika Moen, one of illustrators of Bucko, is praised for "capturing the action of the script perfectly and bringing the characters to energetic life"?
  • ... that drawings of Erika Moen, one of illustrators of Bucko, are praised as "clever" and "a pleasure to behold"?
  • ... that drawings of Erika Moen were praised for bringing the script and characters of the comic, Bucko, to "energetic life"?
If you disagree with either of proposed hooks, don't hesitate to tell me. --George Ho (talk) 03:19, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Of those both 1 or 3 are good, but 2 is a bit awkwardly worded. Thank you very much, — Cirt (talk) 03:50, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Politicians and inherent notability

Hey there, and thanks for the additions to Norm Peterson (politician) which are very much appreciated. (I hadn't thought of looking in that book for birth dates - it's always great to find them since the SA Parliament website is awful.) "Inherent notability" is generally shorthand for a subject whose notability is guaranteed by a position they held (or a place listed in a Heritage register, or something). WP:POLITICIAN guarantees notability to everyone elected to national or first-level sub-national (i.e. state) legislatures, so Peterson therefore has "inherent notability" under that policy and bypasses WP:GNG. But it's a rare tagger who, on having their tag removed, takes the time to improve the article, so thank you. :) Frickeg (talk) 23:06, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

From The Doctor to my son Thomas

What do you think of this new article I've created, From The Doctor to my son Thomas ? — Cirt (talk) 05:02, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Um, sorry but please read the article first? It's not to his son, it's to someone else's son. — Cirt (talk) 05:24, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
You don't have to read the entire article right away but I think if you watch the video and just read the lede introduction section of the article you'll understand more what it's about? — Cirt (talk) 05:25, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
I already created the DYK nomination; I just wanted to adhere to BLP policy and to be creative without misleading readers. --George Ho (talk) 05:36, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, I think there's a significant language barrier here, as the majority of all your suggested hooks completely misunderstand the article. Not sure if you understand it from the lede intro section. It's not his son. It's someone else's son. — Cirt (talk) 12:13, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
I know that. I was just trying to make an April Fool-ish hook. --George Ho (talk) 17:26, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Ah okay well that's understandable but I don't want to make light or make fun of the topic but rather treat it seriously. — Cirt (talk) 17:30, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Can you reverse the striking on some of the hooks? --George Ho (talk) 17:32, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Why? Can't you see they are wrong and not per the article's sourcing and factually inaccurate? — Cirt (talk) 17:34, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
To be truthful but confusing and misleading, not lying or inaccurate. I know you don't like joking on that innocent little boy and to make him the April Fools joke. (Well, I don't know if I should compare myself to that boy. I was on the same situation; see User:George Ho/Block History) Speaking of the boy, I wonder if the boy knows the "Doctor"'s real name. --George Ho (talk) 17:44, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
I'm sorry but I strongly disagree with being inaccurate. — Cirt (talk) 17:45, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Every time I try to make a joke hook, they end up being rejected. Great. I'll never make a successful April Fools one. And all libbies tell me to be nice to the grieving boy when, in fact, I was trying to make a botched humorous attempt. Now the recent ones are deemed as "inaccurate". I know that the Doctor doesn't have a son, okay? But my attempts shouldn't have come out wrong. How am I going to make a joke on that? I don't like taking things too seriously; that makes my heart ache so much. --George Ho (talk) 17:50, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry you feel that way and I'm grateful for your nomination but I just don't want to be inaccurate. Especially not with this subject matter. I hope you can understand, — Cirt (talk) 18:00, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
