Hi Newhoggy,

I saw your congratulation message on Angela's talk page but I'm not sure how to interpret it. Maybe she has just married? :) —Gennaro Prota•Talk 23:09, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Ah ... no - I recently got news that she was living with him in Melbourne. Good guess though :-) -- Newhoggy | Talk 23:19, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

An answer

It's not that I didn't want to answer. Actually, I left Wikipedia for drama that I didnt want to talk about (its a lllooonnnggggg story). I have now returned, but still find it hard to edit because I have exams next week (and I have a certain average to maintain). Also, with all the commotion in the last few days, I simply forgot to answer, so please don't take it the wrong way ([1]). See you. Oran e (t) (c) (e) 23:54, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Ok, it's all right then :) —Gennaro Prota•Talk 23:56, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia is in sore need of a policy regarding musical artists and groups. You've been active in this area in the past, and thus, we invite you participation here.

Inline audio link pop-ups

What it would look like to hover over an audio link

As you're one of the people who commented about formatting/clutter on the {{audio}} template, I'm wondering what you think of my proposal for a javascript popup instead. I fixed the "clicking on the icon goes to the image page" problem a while ago, but there is still the "overloaded interface"/"too many click targets" problem, and I'm proposing we use javascript to hide the extra links until you hover over it. You can try out the mock-up yourself by adding this to your User:Gennaro Prota/monobook.js:

document.write('<scr' + 'ipt type="text/javascript" src="'
             + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></scr'
             + 'ipt>');

This would be a site-wide change, so everyone would see it, and it safely falls back to the current design with several links on browsers without javascript. I would be happy with any kind of support, suggestions, or criticism; right now I feel like I'm talking to a wall. — Omegatron 18:42, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

CSD G7/I1

When I delete a page under the speedy deletion policy, I always note what guideline, specifically, applies. In this case, two applied: G7 (author request) and I1 (duplicate image). That's all!  :-) Mangojuicetalk 17:54, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

CMVP

Thanks for the CMVP logo update. BTW, the article is using the gif and you mentioned updating the png. Luis F. Gonzalez 22:47, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps I've cause some confusion, sorry. Initially I updated the png, converting the gif on the NIST site (to png). Then, I realized that a) the image could be on Commons b) there was no point in converting, as the image quality wasn't certainly going to improve for that. So I uploaded the original (unconverted) gif to Commons; the intent is that both the article and your user page use that one and the png be removed. —Gennaro Prota•Talk 13:07, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Gennaro Prota, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Article in need of cleanup - please assist if you can

WinKey

  • REQUEST PARAGRAPH RESTORE
I think that this paragraph was better in the WinKey entry. The problem of the WinKey was not just in early First Person Shooters, but any software that heavily relied on shortcut keys, including most graphic aplications and Maya (software). Yes, we pried out the keys. Why would we bury this history under trivia in "Modifyer keys" when it is unique to the WinKey?
It is also possible to disable the WinKeys entirely by modifying the Windows Registry. The WinKeys are powerful enough to take the focus away from an application, yet are often placed directly adjacent to commonly used modifier keys, making it easy to hit them inadvertently. While in some applications this behavior is merely distracting or annoying, in others (such as real-time games) it can be devastating. Some people find the placement of the WinKeys so unfortunate and simply pry the keys from the keyboard altogether. Some keyboard drivers (such as Microsoft IntelliType) allow users to easily disable the WinKeys.

--Knulclunk 00:12, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

  • I agree that it belongs more to the WinKey entry and I like the way you have drafted the paragraph (though I'd tone down some terms, e.g. devastating). Thank you very much. I'll certainly add mention of this. BTW, Be bold in updating pages! :-) (but I always appreciate discussion when, as in this case, the change affects an issue which has been considered before and settled differently). —Gennaro Prota•Talk 20:47, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

OEM article

Hi, thanks for your reorganization of the OEM entry. I made some further work which you might want to review. I feel that it doesn't need a cleanup tag anymore, but I'd like to hear other editors' opinions on this. —Gennaro Prota•Talk 12:37, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

It looks better now. Would you be able to find some references to back up the article? -- Zanimum 15:17, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
I'll try :-) What parts specifically? I guess one of them is the OEM vs. bulk distinction. Adaptec makes it (or used to make it) with SCSI cards, so I'll look at their web site. Any others? —Gennaro Prota•Talk 16:37, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Comment

You are right to say that the current article on Comments is programming language specific and that there other kinds of comments. However, I think the solution is to have to articles, one dealing with comment sin the general case and one dealing with the specific details of programming language comments. The current article does need to be renamed as Comments (computer programming) or something along those lines, rather than its current more general name. Derek farn 22:51, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

My suggestion would be to move the current "comment (computing)" to "comment (computer programming)" and have a new article "comment (computing)" that dealt with the more general case. Any general material in the existing article being considered for transfer to the general article. The number of articles linking to the current page is not that large, so it would not be too big a job to update them. Derek farn 00:33, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
Strong recommendation for discussion: This message is for all interested parties, but is principally directed to User:Derek farn and User:Gennaro Prota for information purposes. A discussion thread has been started Talk:Comment_(computing)#Article_structure.2C_disambiguation_and_scope. It is strongly encouraged that discussion on this issue be conducted on the relevant page so all interested parties can mutually participate to help maintain and improve the article, and WP in general. Thanks! dr.ef.tymac 02:49, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

DX10 operating system

I think that the page should remain there and not at DX10 because most people searching for DX10 are using the abbreviation for DirectX 10. —Mets501 (talk) 21:11, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for notifying me. I disagree though. If we follow this logic we should also have a redirect from DX9 and from DX8 and... Of course DX7 is the Yahama keyboard. Also, people reading about DirectX are unlikely to be perplexed by the abbreviation and look it up here. And then again, what about the future? Should we have DXv for each future v version? And also DXx.y and DXx.y.z. etc.? And what about other technologies and pieces of software? After all "VC6" and "VC6.5" are common abbreviations for Visual C++ 6 and Visual C++ 6 SP5. —Gennaro Prota•Talk 09:09, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
You're right. I've moved the page, and put a disambig notice at the top of it for DirectX 10. —Mets501 (talk) 13:58, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Re: Your opinion

Hey Gennaro Prota. I think it's unfortunate that Esperanza had to come to be deleted, but it did feel like it was a different organization than it used to be. The values of Esperanza still hold, however, and many of its programs will hopefully continue. It seems that the organization as a whole just wasn't a good fit for Wikipedia anymore. -- Natalya 19:39, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

There was anger on both sides, which was too bad. But, of course, it's always hard when people disagree on something. -- Natalya 19:50, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

It's been taken care of! Let me know if you need anything else. -- Natalya 22:37, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Bold editing

At your suggestion, (heh), I made a bold edit that has started a bit of a controvery over an image file name. (Kent State Shootings-image name) Do you have a few minutes to poke your nose in and check it out? If it's not your cup of tea, that's okay. Thanks!

In ogni caso ti ringrazio. Buon editing. --gala.martin (what?) 15:02, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Please Stay

Despite your concern over the "slipstream", Cup of Coffee issue, I encourage you to stay on as a Wikipedian. Yes, there may always be self-promotion and vandalism in Wikipedia, but the ultimate goal; a worldwide, central, interlinked database of human knowledge, is so useful, practical, and ambitious, that I believe the good will overcome the evil. We are building a cathedral. Patience is needed. Please stay on.--Knulclunk 17:46, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Knulclunk :-) Actually, the "cup of coffe issue" was just one example… I have so many articles in my watch list which degrade similarly… The point is: we are building a (free) cathedral... fine! I don't claim that we have the same security measures as NASA, but at least let's close the building yard gates at night! —Gennaro Prota•Talk 05:32, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

ISSN template issue

The ISSN template is giving unhelpful results for some titles. Andy Mabbett 19:45, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for notifying me. I see that Docu changed the url back to opac. In effect, the main reason why everything is implemented in the lower layer template {{ISSN search link}} is exactly that if the linked to site becomes unavailable/outdated/whatever we have a single place to modify its url. IMHO MediaWiki should treat ISBN's and ISSN's uniformously but, until then, these ISSN-related templates are an acceptable alternative. —Gennaro Prota•Talk 11:50, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Help with audio sample

Hi. I saw you had a few disgussions at Template_talk:Audio. I made a few audio samples for Icelandic movie titles. But I think it's a bit ugly how it's put up. See When the Raven Flies. Would you mind giving me a few tips how to make it neat? I would prefere having a link to a javascript player. --Steinninn 08:05, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, maybe you should have a message on top of this page saying that you have left. And I left Omegatron a message around the same time as I left you one, so I think he has left too. Thanks tough. I'll just leave the audio samples as they are and see if someone wants to change them in the future. --Steinninn 22:32, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

ENU (disambiguation) citations?

I've been trying to find an original definition of ENU as American English, but the closest I have come is your entry here. I know I've seen this used, but can't recall where. Can you provide some examples? This does not conform to the ISO 639 standard, and I'd like to start collecting improper usages.Peter K. Sheerin, K6WEB (talk) 04:07, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Template:Usage instructions cross-reference

A tag has been placed on Template:Usage instructions cross-reference requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Thanks. --MZMcBride (talk) 22:06, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Gennaro Prota! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 938 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Your userpage is in a category

Your userpage User:Gennaro Prota/KISS principle has a category, and so appears in Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from FOLDOC.
As the guideline on userpages describes, this is undesired. It is suggested that you edit the userpage to prevent this showing. It can be done by adding a colon (:) before the word Category, like this: [[:Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from FOLDOC]]. The category seems hidden. -DePiep (talk) 01:43, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I've commented out the {{FOLDOC}} tag. You have been kind to report this here and avoid modifying the page yourself (which would have required you much less time) but we have risked for this to remain undone forever :-) I currently log in every two centuries or so. —Gennaro Prota•Talk 19:19, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Orphaned non-free image File:Winzip-logo.png

Thanks for uploading File:Winzip-logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:35, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
