Tony Award article assessment

You're doing a great job with these articles, and all the ones you do have all the facts in them needed to make them at least start class. But until there are more sources and narrative descriptions and analysis of the year's awards, perhaps discussing notable firsts and statistics, and also discussing the broadcast itself, including the performances at the ceremony, it would be hard to consider them B-class. Just to save time, I'd suggest you go ahead and note them as "start" class when you finish each one, and then we can upgrade them if they get more analytical/narrative content in the future. Re: Spam by 68.175.106.228

Noticed that you made a valiant attempt to get rid of some of the spam from this IP, but just wanted to let you know that an admin or someone with rollback can get rid of all of the edits rather easily. I left a message over at Happy-Melon's talkpage and he took care of all of the spam. —  MusicMaker5376 17:35, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Rollback

I've granted Rollback to help in your anti-vandalism work. Please let me know if there are any problems, and remember to use it responsibly! See WP:ROLLBACK and feel free to contact me if you have any problems. Cheers. Kbthompson (talk) 18:28, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Jean, this means that now you can just click on the rollback button that you will see next to diffs and users' contribution pages. That way, if a vandal makes a lot of bad changes, you will be able to revert them quickly and easily. All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:47, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Like with what I was talking about above.... —  MusicMaker5376 19:25, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Right. That prompted me to ask Kb to give Jean the Rollback tool. -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:26, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Silly voice parts, again; OR, "Stop the Madness"

Ado Annie is certainly a mezzo-soprano (not a soprano), but the voice part listing is silly in musicals like Oklahoma!. The Stage Agent website is not authoritative at all on this point. I suggest removing the voice part indicators. Then you can turn the "Voice Part" table into a table with the names of the principal roles foillowed by names of notable people who played them in the various productions. We have such a table in a couple of articles, but I am hopeless at tables, so I leave it to you if you want to do it. Otherwise, it could just be an orignal cast section. -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:12, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

In the discussion that was had, I think it's fair to say that a consensus was reached not to add voice parts. Putting them in Hairspray is even worse! Have a fun vacation. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:34, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

South Pacific

Welcome back! Can you confirm yesterday's changes to the song list at South Pacific? I hope you had a nice break. BTW, my Wikipedia recording is up for featured status. Check this out: Wikipedia:Featured_sound_candidates/Image:Little_Maid_of_Arcadee.ogg  :) -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:29, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Yup, "bargain counter baritone", as Peter Schikele says. I had to sing it to a pre-recorded MIDI file accompaniment, so I have no control over how fast each phrase goes, but I was reasonably satisfied with the recording, and we wanted to put a copyright-free recording into Thespis (opera), so this was the easiest way to do it. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 13:12, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Chenoweth

She's getting close to B-class, but there is still too much unreferenced info. Perhaps the refs are in the links at the bottom, but I don't have time to go thru them now. If the links are just to fan sites that don't give us any more info, they should be deleted. Also, there is too much emphasis on upcoming projects and on things that never happened because of conflicts. I don't think it's very encyclopedic to talk about upcoming stuff. I'd wait until it happens and then describe it, along with citations to independent reviews. Anyhow, the article is much better due to today's work, especially your new references. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:05, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Faster than a speeding Jean!

I got up the first review of Gypsy. Muahahahahaha! Brantley seemed to be on Cloud 9. I gotta get a ticket. Everybody in the cast is out now having their piece of the review framed, and Laurents can die happy. -- Ssilvers (talk) 05:14, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Annie list of roles

I suggest putting the character names back in with original *principal* cast next to them, leaving out the copyrighted info, but perhaps including factual info like, an eleven-year-old, redheaded orphan; or a kindly billionaire. -- Ssilvers (talk) 00:16, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Musings--Not sure a character list is needed, there are only a few principals, & they are so simply drawn, I would prefer the descriptions written into the the synopsis in this particular article (not my feeling for other, more complicated, shows); in any event, no time to think more on this, prob. not till April 3 or later. JeanColumbia (talk) 12:22, 29 March 2008 (UTC) Added: re the article Annie JeanColumbia (talk) 12:24, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

OK. I leave Annie in your hands. It's a hard-knock task. -- Ssilvers (talk) 16:14, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Wow. Annie has a huge amount of (IMO) non-notable info. I did some work on it, but the tour descriptions have lots of non-notable names and non-notable/unreferenced info - is the anecdote about the abandoned black poodle really encyclopedic? See if you agree with my changes and can do anything about the production info. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:05, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
No time (or inclination) to tackle this right now. (I do think all of this cast info should be somewhere-perhaps in a separate list article, for example something like "Annie Cast Lists". The poodle story does seem unnecessary/irrelevant/does not help to understand anything about this musical in any way/or whatever else I can think of!)JeanColumbia (talk) 17:08, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

You tube links and copywrite

Just letting you know that as the videos themselves are not on wikipedia, they do not violate any copywrite rules for wikipedia. Wikipedia is not responsible for sites that articles are externally linked to. There are many pages that have youtube links on wikipedia and have had them for some time. Also, it is very possible that such videos may be perfectly legally available on you tube as both productions were broadcast nationally on public television and youtube is not making any money off of these videos.Nrswanson (talk) 04:17, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

A Hairspray fun fact list

I remember trying to add a message board that I run to the Hairspray links list a few weeks back, and you removed it. Since then I have created a *closed* topic entitled 'fun facts' which has info not found on the wikipedia page (and probably not anywhere else)... the info on this list has been passed onto the show's producing office to ensure all of it is 100% accurate and it cant be changed or commented on by regular users. This list includes technical specs, plot holes and other tidbits about the stage show. Is there any way that this page can be added as a link without it violating the no forums rule? I think this is the proper way to contact you, if not I am sorry. 24.193.154.242 (talk) 09:15, 5 April 2008 (UTC)christina ((This is a copy of my response, for the record: Re: Your note to me. Thanks for asking. I really can't tell until I see your material. I suggest that you include it in the article, and let's see. I have to remind you though, even if I think your material/link is acceptable, there are many others who watch carefully for violations and for acceptable material, as well as some automated "bots" which may believe that your material violates some policy. Also, be aware that anything that seems like WP:TRIVIA, that appears to be Original Research WP:OR or that lacks notability WP:NOTABILITY will be discouraged and possible removed. You might want to read about Reliable Sources and Verifiability, WP:VERIFY also. Finally, there is a good principle which I've seen quoted, that is: "Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. As explained in the policy introduction, merely being true, or even verifiable, does not automatically make something suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia."

I realize this is a bit long-winded, but there is a lot to think about here. The only other thing you might want to consider is getting in touch with the editors who are on the Musical theatre project here, they may be able to help you more than I can. JeanColumbia (talk) 10:56, 5 April 2008 (UTC)))

Thank you for your assistance. Glory Days (musical); Bernadette

Glory Days was obviously deleted in error - the article must not have clearly explained that it was about to open on Broadway, and I am guessing (I never saw it) that it didn't have enough info in it. I asked an administrator to re-instate it, so I hope it's back up soon. As for the young Miss Peters (I can't believe she's 60. I must be old), I am happy to help out how/wherever I can. Just call, and I'll be there....

Oh my, this is just the best message I've received in many a day! JeanColumbia (talk) 19:40, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
Yes, that's correct - it didn't clearly assert notability. The current version does assert notability, so that's okay. DS (talk) 12:32, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for working on this. It's a bit disorganized and, of course, needs inline referencing. I tried to spruce it up a bit further. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:21, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Hairspray

It looks like a lot of fancruft has crept into the cast info. What are the male and female "Authority Figures"? Are these really principal characters? It looks like people are creating articles for some non-notable actors.... See what you think. -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:29, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, trying to remember--Female authority figure is Prudy Pingleton, Gym Teacher, Matron; Male authority figure (this is from the official site) is Harriman F. Spritzer, Principal, Mr. Pinky, Guard. In other words, many small roles, except for Prudy. Don't know if 1 actor plays all 3, but that was the case when I saw it (if memory serves). JeanColumbia (talk) 20:50, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Archive for May 2008-July 2008

Thanks for working on The Pirate Queen. It looks like once the show tanked, the editors abandoned the article. I think to tie it off, it needs a cite that supports a final verdict on the show's critical reception (maybe there's a "roundup" of reviews?) and something about the box office or amount that the show lost. Then, I think, the article will at least tell the whole story (if not in great detail), unless it gets revived someday. This seems like a job for SuperJean? BTW, if you want to see my latest WP article, check out Robert the Devil (Gilbert). I'm getting close to having a full set of G's major plays on WP. All the best. -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:09, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Hairspray

Hello, Jean. Would you kindly look at the Hairspray talk page regarding Awards, and see if you can respond and, if you agree, work on the awards section? The new editor seems very knowledgeable about Hairspray and has access to a lot of materials about it, and I am hopeful that we can improve the article with her help. Legally Blonde

Hi Jean, I saw you just edited the cast list article for Legally Blonde (musical). I recently posted a question at User talk:The 80s chick#Legally Blonde cast, asking that user what they thought should be done about the cast listing in the main artice (I saw that they had recently edited the cast section in the main article). I thought I'd let you know in case you had any ideas or wanted to comment. Thanks! —MearsMan talk 12:34, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Jean, I threw in my 2cents at the Legally Blonde talk page, so others could benefit from this recurring question. Please feel free to disagree/agree/comment there. -- Ssilvers (talk) 14:13, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Footnotes in headings; Awards, etc.

Here's a recurring issue: In the awards section, you generally footnote the source at the end of the heading. I cannot find a guideline on this in the MOS (am I missing it?) It seems to me that headings should not have notes, but I see the problem: It is awkward to figure out where to put the footnote. However, I think that the awards section can be treated like the Synopsis section: You don't need a footnote right in the section, you can just add a reference under the "References" heading at the bottom that says something like *[http, etc "Laurence Olivier Awards information for Xanadu]. Frankly, as I've said before, I think we are listing too many awards, and they take up too much space in these articles. I would suggest only listing both winners and noms for Tonys and Oliviers (if the show played in the West End or B'way), and for other awards, only list winners (and don't list any info for awards that are not truly a big deal). Of course, if a show did not play on the WE or B'way, an Obie or Drama Desk award, etc. would be more important. I'd like to hear your thinking about this, since you're doing the bulk of the work in this area. BTW, you may have noticed that a new editor named Marian Kroy is doing a great job improving some of our Synopses. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:15, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

1)I don't care where the reference goes, does the article even need one? 2) I have no opinion on what awards to include/exclude, whatever everyone wants is ok with me. (I'll stop working until you tell me what to do, I don't see any point in wasting my -and your-time.) JeanColumbia (talk) 17:29, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, as I said, my preference would be to just put the ref at the bottom of the article in the refs section. I would definitely list Tonys and Oliviers just the way you are doing it, and then winners of the other awards that you think are really significant (e.g., Drama Desk). You know much more about the significance of awards than I do, so I would go ahead with the ones that you think really add to the encyclopedia reader's information. I'm thinking that when a show is eligible for Tony awards, an Outer Circle Critic's Award *nomination* may not really significant, but as I say, I don't know, and you are much more familiar with the industry than I am. Of course, an important off-B'way play, for instance, is not eligible for Tonys, so the Drama Desk and Obie become more important.... I will follow your lead, because you are doing all the work here, but maybe I can save you a little bit of work. BTW, I asked the question at the musicals project talk page and did not get a lot of interest on it. LOL! -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:40, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks! I wonder if we can get into the Tonys as "press" from Wikipedia.  :) -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:28, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Fame (musical)

Hi,

What is the reason you deleted the Dutch musical-numbers and the cast on Fame (musical)?

Markmu06 (talk) 15:25, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Copy

This is a copy of the response I left on Markmu06 talk page:

==Fame (musical)==

Hi, I used the "rollback" feature on 11:37, May 13, 2008, because User Special:Contributions/172.143.113.180 had deleted the entire article and added his/her comment :"fame s****s". Here is the specific action I took: [2]. I restored the article to the version immediately preceding this obvious vandalism; if I inadvertently did not get the Dutch musical-numbers and the cast that you refer to, sorry, that was not my intention! I merely wanted to restore the article to the version before the vandal and remove the inappropriate comment.

The article was reorganized on April 22, 2008, as you can see here: [3]; I did not perform those edits/reorganization. It appears that I am not the editor you need to speak with (although I see that the material is in the article last paragraph of "Productions around the world", although not in exactly its original version).

Hope this helps! JeanColumbia (talk) 15:57, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Jean. What do you think of this edit? Although it makes the quote shorter and snappier, does it remove balance and information about the direction and costumes that is of sufficient interest to justify the extra verbiage? Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 13:18, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

On a Clear Day You Can See Forever

Hello, Jean. I'm putting the finishing touches on the film article, so you may want to remove all the info related to the differences between the play and the film, since I'm including it in the new article, where it's more relevant. Also, can't something be done to fix the Playbill image? In the film infobox, images can be adjusted by citing the number of pixels, i.e., 150px, 200px, etc., and I notice you designated the Playbill image as 180px, but it still is enlarged and blurred. MovieMadness (talk) 17:46, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the image, it needed to be adjusted to 135px for clarity. It looks fine now. MovieMadness (talk) 18:39, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Dear Hbdragon, IMO ACL is not even close to comprehensive. Where is the background/genesis section? Critical response section? Box office info? Analysis of the book and music? See the article structure page at WP:MUSICALS for more guidance on topics that a musicals article might cover. If you do decide to do a research project to expand and improve the article, post a message at the Musicals project talk page, and some of us are likely to help out. Just my 2c here: Marvin Laird is only mentioned in the one place. If he's important to her life, maybe he should be mentioned more than once. Otherwise, maybe the new statement should go in a footnote. Is he notable (that is, does he deserve an article?). If not, it may be that he really doesn't need to be mentioned. It's a close call. Best regards. -- Ssilvers (talk) 15:40, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
