Being new to this Wikipedia thing, I apologise if this isn't the way to "talk" — but I can't figure out how else to communicate, and it seems like it's what I'm supposed to do, so here goes.

Regarding the DVD cropping thing, you are absolutely correct — the resource I link to was created by me, specifically after you undid my first un-referenced addition to the wiki entry :) And I can see how it would be less credible being that. Save for the Amazon review I link to on my blog, and http://gedblog.com/2009/03/30/andy-richter-gets-tweaked-for-dvd/ , I have difficulty finding anyone commenting on this fact. On the contrary, actually, it's easier to find people praising the fact that it's in 16:9, yet apparently unaware of how it came to be so. So basically, I decided to write that blog post to actually visualize the difference.

I assume you also own the DVD? It'd be very helpful if you would pop it in your player and compare it to the screenshots I've presented on my blog (I have the region 1 DVD, and I don't believe a region 2 DVD was ever produced?). That way you could confirm the legitimacy of my claim.

Since this is an IP address and you are not signed in, I don't know if you will get this, but thank you for your message to me regarding Andy Richter Controls the Universe DVD. (I will post this on my own talk page, perhaps you will see it there if not on the IP page.) I have compared my DVD to the 4x3 version on several occasions. The widescreen version clearly shows things on the SIDES in many scenes that are not visible in the 4x3 version. I gave one example in my initial posting on the Talk page of the article, specifically, the 3-way phone call with Teak, Jessica, and Phil. It's in the episode "Saturday Early Evening Fever". I also watched the original FOX airing in 16x9, and the HDNet reruns in 16x9. The formatting of those original arings and the HDNet reruns were absolutely identical to the formatting on the DVD. I can say this for absolute certain about the HDNet airings because I had my DVD set before HDNet stopped running the show and compared them then. (I'd love to have a blue ray, because 1080i masters of this show exist, but, that's not likely to ever happen...)

The fact is, production codes 001 - 009 were shot on 35mm film. (See the production codes here: List of Andy Richter Controls the Universe episodes. Note that the shows were presented WAY out of order.) It is conceivable, that in that first 9, shot on film they played various games with how the 4x3 vs. the 16x9 broadcasts were cropped from the 35mm film frame (and I do not know if the 35mm film frame was "closed matte" (16:9) or "open matte" (4x3). However, production codes HIGHER THAN 009 were shot directly to Betacam HD tape, directly in 16x9 format and edited electronically in the digital domain. It's essentially inconceivable that the 16x9 frame shown to the viewer on these episodes shot directly to tape are cropped. And, in fact, since the SD presentation was not letterboxed, it, by definition, must be a crop or a "pan and scan" of the digital HD frame. Fish Man (talk) 13:09, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

That is super strange... Where did you get your DVD? Mine's from Amazon.

If you wouldn't mind humoring me, I wonder if you'd pop in the pilot episode just the same and compare it to the screenshots on my blog, even if you have already compared it to other 4:3 sources. I just want to eliminate the possibility that the 4:3 TV rip I have isn't one of those odd "taller than the original crop" ones. It's a PAL source, so it's entirely possible that it's a different scan from what you've seen and that they just scanned the entire frame disregard crops (I've seen this with the film "A Walk to Remember" — the original aspect ratio was 2.35:1, but when they broadcast it on HDTV, they just scanned the film with a 16:9 crop, actually letting you see more of the frame (even if it wasn't intended to be seen that way)).

It doesn't look like it was meant to be cropped to anything but 4:3, though. To my eyes it's pretty obvious that something's wrong with whichever scan ended up on my DVD, as you can see from the screenshots. The start montage, for instance, is pretty obviously mangled... And if your comparison revealed things to each side on the DVD which weren't on the TV version, I'm wondering it that TV version was double-cropped? Or if something completey different is going on. It's strange, that's for sure :)

Nero Wolfe and Chad Mitchell

I've appreciated your contributions to NW pages and discussions for a while now, and was therefore startled to see your handle on the Chad Mitchell Trio history page -- you added, I think, a reference to Shel Silverstein's Three Legged Man. I was browsing that article's history because Joe Frazier was for quite some time a good friend of mine, and although neither of us still works in the Los Angeles area we try to get together for lunch every year or so.

I was messaging with Prestopino a few years ago and speculating about what song list they would use for an upcoming concert. I wondered if they would do Three Legged Man, because that was the only song I ever heard them do in which Presto used d-tuners on his banjo. He wrote back that he didn't ". . . think they'll do that Silverstein song." Email is a notoriously difficult medium for nuances, but he made it sound almost dismissive. Now I've got myself curious and should ask him, but he'll never remember that exchange.

Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors wanted at LSU

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you are listed as a Wikipedian in Louisiana. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors to help with Wikipedia assignments at Louisiana State University, which will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester. The role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

Pittsburgh event for Wikipedia's tenth anniversary

Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop at CMU (Aug 15)

Since you are one of the editors in the Category:Wikipedians by alma mater: Carnegie Mellon University, I'd like to invite you to the Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop that will take place at CMU on Aug 15 (this workshop is open to general public, and is a joint imitative of CMU and Pitt). There will be another workshop held at Pitt in the Fall as well. It will cover how to include Wikipedia in one's course (WP:SUP) and also how to become a Wikipedia:Campus Ambassadors. Pennsylvania has currently only one ambassador (myself) and it would be great if we could recruit at least several more. Ambassadors help course instructors, showing them how Wikipedia works, and interact with students.
