Foreign words style -- thanks! edit

Thanks for your quick and supportive reply on my New Contributors' query! I'm starting to work more with bibliographies and bios of musicians/authors, so figured I'd better familiarize myself with the style guidelines (or get started, at least). I know my strengths & weaknesses as a copyeditor (pre-Wikipedia): that I can be consistent (even without a spell checker; I'm also a demon proofreader) but have to make a concerted effort to assimilate (read: accept ;-) and substitute a new rule for the old tried-and-true.

Given what I suppose is your level of activity, you probably don't remember: but the first time you responded to one of my Help queries was also the first time I discovered what an Esperanzan is -- and to me, you truly exemplify the spirit :-) This place could be kind of overwhelming for the likes of me, were it not for the ministrations of you and your kind, and I just want to express that explicitly here. [[Best regards, Deborahjay 09:17, 9 June 2006 (UTC)]]Reply

Thanks, I'm blushing here.  :-) Actually I've only been here in any serious fashion for a few months longer than you have, I just happen to learn — and assimilate in the sense you used it — very quickly. My strengths that help in Wikipedia are all in the social/admin/structure line of work, my major weakness is that I'm not diligent enough to work on any one article for a long time (consistently). I envy people such as yourself who can create substantial new articles from scratch, and perform major content updates consistently. I try to work on that weakness, but I've realised that my strengths are useful to Wikipedia too, albeit behind the scenes supporting others. Trust me, I remember every single time I speak to a fellow editor, and it's nice to be appreciated.
Perhaps you should consider joining Esperanza yourself; I'm not very active on the project, I just believe in its goals wholeheartedly. Yes, we're building an encyclopedia here, but we're not robots — it's being built by humans, for humans — and I truly believe the way we treat our fellow editors on here is as important as the knowledge revolution itself. One day humanity will have to wise up enough to handle the awesome power and knowledge we now have, but that's something we need to work on every day lest ignorance allows terrible things (such as you and I are familiar with) to happen once again. In summary, I see Wikipedia as a microcosm of humanity.
Anyways, enough philosophising for now, thanks again. :-) — Estarriol talk 10:27, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Incidentally, regarding the italicisation issue, if there's nothing in the MoS, you may wish to amend the relevant section to include your notes, and justify them in the edit summary. MoS guidelines should not lightly be changed, but we shouldn't be timid about filling gaps in the guidelines either. — Estarriol talk 10:32, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Floo Network Authority edit

Since you have it on your user page, I thought I'd let you know, I have merged the Floo Network Authority article with the Department of Magical Transport section of the Ministry of Magic article. The Floo Network itself remains an article on its own. Lgriot 17:00, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Life is Beautiful -- thanks for the guidance edit

You really performed a great assist in helping me track down the source of the problematic statement in that article, and explaining how to do this effectively on my own, plus highlighting some of the considerations involved in deleting questionable material. (Considering the subjects I edit, this is all too likely to be necessary again and again :-/

See the latest on the Discussion page there for current and projected developments. (Oh, one more thing -- how do I write an internal link directly to a "Talk" page? I seem to have got the syntax wrong when I tried just now...) Thanks again! -- Deborahjay 08:03, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Bielski Brothers - remedies in stages edit

Further to your reply at the NCH page -- I've done a preliminary restore of the neutral content, i.e. Further reading, an interwiki link, and a stub template. Haven't touched the others (External links and another, can't recall quite what), that might be part of the POV material, nor have I "treated" the latter in the commented discussion and what was deleted from previous versions' content. (I'm still thinking about it while doing neglected "real" work, e.g. KP and my ongoing regular pro bono editing).

My inclination is to write a concise, NPOV synopsis of the contended content, re: allegations (though not "charges" -- believe me, I've put some thought into the connotations of that language!!) of atrocities. Thanks for being supportive of my "sensible" judgment -- upon which I ought to rely more -- and for everything, really.  :-D Deborahjay 21:01, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Update: I followed through on the above (while I was thinking about it...) and am going to give it a rest for now. Your review and comments are welcome, as always. ---later, Deborahjay 21:22, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

A short Esperanzial update edit

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Tip of the day project update edit

Just trying to get things better organized around there. Toward that end, I've created a task list template for the project. If all the contributors to the project placed it on their user page, we could all keep in touch more easily (with announcements, alerts, etc.). It, and the latest announcements can be found at:

Re Tom Hendricks edit

That's ok - I blocked them for the 3RR violation primarily, though I note you had also warned them. They've emailed me already complaining about the block, I have yet to respond... -- Francs2000 22:55, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have advised them to come back after the block expires and make their suggestions on the article talk page. Let me know if anything sparks off again. -- Francs2000 23:01, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

re: Ryan Bennett edit

Hi, in response to your request for information about Ryan Bennett for the purposes of a bio page on Wikipedia, I have sent you an e-mail with a lot of background information. --Ivantrembow 22:28, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm glad to help out with the Ryan Bennett page. I know much more about Ryan than some of the other organizations, such as IFC, etc. Do you have any more info on them? I gave some basic info so the links are not empty stubs, but I fear if nothing else is added, they will just delete the articles for lack of info. Reds0xfan 22:24 24 July 2006 (MDT)

I quoted you edit

Your last response in a discussion on Talk:Magneto (comics) was very succinct and to the point. I used the last response under "Significant stories" in a personal discussion with User:DrBat on the same page because it was easier than putting it all down myself. Basically he was wondering why the character's biography needs to be trimmed and cited. Hope you don't mind, as it was basically the same context. --Newt ΨΦ 00:04, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

August Esperanza Newsletter edit

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

September Esperanza Newsletter edit

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!

John Locke edit

When have I made this mistake before? The other mistake involved a misunderstanding with which injurty to Locke the editor was talking about not the fact I did not remember the episode with the shrapnel. I have watched all the Lost episodes at least twice except for a few episodes that I completely missed (apparantly the burning leg one). Gdo01 18:39, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cage Rage edit

I just noticed on the list of notable promotions with only a stub article that you are listed as expanding the article. Without realising this, I had taken it upon myself about two weeks ago to expand the Cage Rage article along similar lines to the UFC article. I'm new around here so I don't want to tread on toes and just wanted to make sure the way was clear for me to keep doing what I'm doing. Many thanks Crazyknight 09:59, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

November Esperanza Newsletter edit

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Cage Rage (again) edit

Hello again fellow Londoner! As you know, I've been working on the Cage Rage article and, thus far, I think I've done pretty well. However, as a new Wikipedian, I am in dire need of some guidance. I'm trying to get it to a B-class standard and don't know what is missing to get there. I have a to-do list on the talk page but I'm unclear on things like image use. I know you probably have loads on but a quick casting of the eye across it would be most helpful. Many thanks -- Crazyknight 10:52, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
