template:replace edit

What is the purpose of {{replace}}? It doesn't have any documentation, and doesn't seem to be used anywhere... --Waldir talk 11:53, 22 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I was trying to make a template with an long if-function ({{grc}}, I think) substitute without leaving the if-function in the wikitext. But apparently it needs a more complicated technique. If you're looking to use the template name, feel free. — Eru·tuon 14:49, 23 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
No, I just searched for it as the replace string function would come handy for something I was cooking up, and I thought that maybe some template wizard could have made it work. I think we should ask for the deletion of that page, though, so that it doesn't confuse other editors. Are you ok with that? --Waldir talk 18:30, 23 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Definitely. It's no use to me any more. — Eru·tuon 14:12, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok :) I marked it for deletion. Cheers, Waldir talk 16:59, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Aorist edit

Great rewrite job on Aorist, of a section I've been scared to touch! I've reworded slightly, to fit better with the rest of the article, which discusses the aorist aspect, not just the aorist tense. And do you have a source we could cite? -- Radagast3 (talk) 00:44, 16 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for adding the ref. I think the article is pretty solid now. -- Radagast3 (talk) 08:40, 16 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Whew! edit

I've gone through a bunch of old templates you've created and put deprecation notices on them. You'll have 2 weeks or so to save your work, or you can opt to stop them from being deleted. In the future, please consider posting templates when they're more usable rather than works in progress. Thanks! Tehw1k1 (talk) 09:12, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Aquilegia canadensis edit

Your current edits make the article look way better. A species Wetland Indicator Status is kind of important especially in the area of land development. The etymology; not everybody is a botanist and they just might be looking up that one specific species. 7mike5000 (talk) 00:33, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wetland indicator status is useful if a species is actually fond of wetlands, but columbine is indifferent with regard to wetlands, and is more common in drier areas like cliffs.
I like the idea of making etymologies more available to people, but in an encyclopedia, they should be placed in the article to which they're specifically relevant, and not in any article where people might find them. — Eru·tuon 02:43, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Accent marks edit

Please note that no transliteration system of Russian ever uses accent marks to show stress. Stress can be shown either in the native Cyrillic script, on, better yet, in the IPA transcription. I have reverted the changes you made. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 30, 2010; 19:11 (UTC)

Also, please don't put "alternative transliterations" in the lead. There are often dozens of (valid) transliteration variations; we don't put them all in the lead but standardize on one in order to keep things clean. You're 100% right.Although initially I couldn't understand why;it just seemed wrong.
But it was indeed
my orthographical "correction" that was wrong (never mind the perispomene before the following omega; hadn't really noticed the accent :) ).
FYI You really got me blown out of my mind cause I really didn't have any recollection at all of the -οψ masculine declension noun group
(thought all masculines (-ps) are spelled with an omega and thus have been spelling them for ages).
Had to go through googling, then through all the lexica @perseus and finally back to my high school ancient greek grammar book (infact the secondary notes- word lists therein) to understand and find out that this subgroup indeed exists...

Aorist edit

You have your tendentious and erroneous falsehood devoted to the "linguistic sense" of aorist. Leave the article on the aorist tense alone; let some vestige of the actual Greek tense survive on Wikipedia. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 00:03, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Why is the term "tense" so important? An aorist is an aorist whatever the name, right? — Eru·tuon 00:21, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Because, as Cynwolfe documented, "aorist tense" is the term in common use; "tense" is the only term for the Indo-European class of verb forms of which Greek has seven and Latin six - a combination of stem and ending.
But I removed text because it was wrong in any vocabulary. The aorist is not equivalent to the "perfective aspect"; in some uses, it has pure "tense" - in the linguistic sense; in some uses it has pure aspect, in some it is a combination of both. An article on the classicist's aorist should be comprehensible to classicists, this is not. It is also wrong. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 00:50, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm fine with the term "aorist tense" being used in the article. Smyth uses it, and he explains the aorist in a way consistent with the way modern linguists do. — Eru·tuon 01:45, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Your opinion would be appreciated at Talk:Aorist#Protected II. — kwami (talk) 01:03, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

My source for the meaning of aoristos in this context is Dionysius Thrax; I have not consulted secondary works - which would be difficult to find - but LSJ is at least compatible with that analysis. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 17:53, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Do you mean that Dionysius explains in what sense the aorist is unlimited or undefined? All I have read from him is that the aorist is past and has similarity to the future, which doesn't help much. Does he say more? — Eru·tuon 18:55, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
All of your edits so far have been improvements in my opinion, but I thought the recent edit to the lead made it rather less clear. Thought I should say s.t. to you directly, considering the atmosphere of the article. — kwami (talk) 07:07, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Which should be a sufficient indication that you are doing harm to the article. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 18:45, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reindeer edit

Thanks for your comment. Still not sure what is gained by splitting info that relates to its real life use into two, in the process providing less info by removing the people that did it (the Sami), and ending up with the final unreferenced sentence. Though I certainly do agree that the specific claim doesn't need a ref, there really is no such thing as a claim that doesn't need a ref if strictly following wiki policy (→WP:REF, which of course could be followed by WP:IAR). In any case it can be questioned if the specification on earthbound reindeer pulling pulks belongs in the lead, seeing that it isn't mentioned at all in the Reindeer in Christmas subsection. Regardless, I'm sure you already knew these things, and I'll leave the reindeer–and the judgement of what belongs in this lead–behind. Etymology of Alpha (letter) edit

Thank you for your speedy responce. Even though you wrote that álphō (to invent) is not an actual Ancient Greek word, I guess you really meant it's not included in the WEB LSJ. And indeed is not in the web edition although I've seen (αλφέω, ευρίσκειν) in an 1901 edition with ref. M (Magnum?) 72.47. --Odysses () 22:08, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Still does not make sense. edit

Hi,

Your revert and clarification didn't really clarify very much regarding Achaea.

"Achaea today has about one-third of the population of the Peloponnese. Two-thirds of Achaia live near Patras, the capital of Achaea and the Peloponnese, and more than half of the population live within the city. Patras is also the third largest city in Greece excluding Piraeus. The main industrial area is 20km south of the city near Fares, and Tsoukoulaiíka and Vrachnaiíka."

1) The first sentence says "Achaea" and the second one says "Achaia".
2) Patras is the capital of Achaea, not the Peloponnese.
3) More than half of what population (the Peloponnese or Achaea?) live within the city?
4) "Patras is also the third largest city in Greece excluding Piraeus." requires a comma.
5) "The main industrial area is 20km south of the city near Fares, and Tsoukoulaiíka and Vrachnaiíka.": this is a run-on -- "and Tsoukoulaiíka and Vrachnaiíka".. what?

My preceding edit fixed all these errors. The only bit of information that I removed is "and Tsoukoulaiíka and Vrachnaiíka", because it's not mentioned what those cities (?) actually pertain to. The "Patras|Patra" should just be "Patras", and Peiraeus|Piraeus should just be Piraeus:

"More than half of Achaea's inhabitants live in the capital, Patra. Patras is also the third largest city in Greece excluding Piraeus. The main industrial area is 20km south of the city near Fares." --Agamemnus (talk) 18:45, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have rewritten according to these points.
The reason I reverted before was because you seemed to be removing useful content that was badly written, but easily rewritable. But if there are any factual errors in the intelligible version, please correct them. — Eru·tuon 19:10, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I did some searching, and I did find that Fares had a lot of different (agricultural) industries, but:
  • It seems that Vrachneika is a small village without any industries and is 12 km southeast of Patras/Patra.
  • I couldn't find a location for "Tsoukalaiíka".
I modified the section accordingly.--Agamemnus (talk) 22:50, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Cyclamen species edit

Dear Eruton,

I have seen that you have created several pages on the Cyclamen species.

As you know (?), I am cyclamen-freak. A lot of pictures on Commons were taken in my own garden. Friends and other freaks have provided me with pictures of other species, which I was allowed to upload on Commons too.

On page Cyclamen coum I have added C. pseudibericum you had forgotten. This is the most beautiful species of the group, which is in my experience better hardy than generally claimed. I have this species since several year in my garden in mid-Belgium, and all but one picture on Commons - that of f. roseum - are of my own plants. See the page I have written on this species the French and Dutch wikipedia.

Best botanic regards, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 17:07, 13 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:Cyclamen intaminatum flowers.jpg edit

Dear Eruton,

I confirm this picture is not Cyclamen intaminatum, but Cyclamen mirabile.
Cyclamen intaminatum has smaller flower with some streaking on the unthooted petals and no blotch at he base (Latin intaminatum means immaculate).
Cyclamen mirabile has a blotch at the base and as on the picture toothed petal edges near the tip.

Cyclamen pages edit

Hi Eruton,

I have seen that you have written pages for othee Cyclamen species. For Cyclamen intaminatum there is no material yet on Commons.
For Cyclamen creticum there is material available on Commons. For the three other species (C. abchasicum, C. peloponnesiacum and C. somalense) there is too no material yet available on Commons.

Regards, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 13:29, 27 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Cyclamen photos edit

Dear Eruton,

I have also good contact with cyclamen freaks. One of them (Mark Griffiths), who provided me in the past with photos of some species (including photos of Cyclamen parviflorum in his natural habitat too...), will provide me shortly with good pictures of other species among others Cyclamen intaminatum.

Best botanic regards, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 09:05, 28 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pictures of other Cyclamen species edit

Dear Eruton,

I just got from Mark own pictures of the following species: C. abchasicum, C. intaminatum and C. peloponnesiacum, he has, as in the past, granted me for putting them on Wikipedia. I will put them on Commons later today. He will provide me too with a better picture of C. caucasicum.

Mark confirmed what I wrote on the French site about Cyclamen somalense, i.e., "C.somalense as far as I know is only in one Botanical garden". He of course has no own photo of it.

Botanically yours, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 09:41, 29 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I will ask Mark whether he has a picture of a full-open Cyclamen alpinum. --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 13:56, 29 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
PS: The picture you have put on page Cyclamen repandum as Cyclamen peloponnesiacum subsp. peloponnesiacum has even dark pink flowers as that Mark provided as subsp. vividum (File:Cyclamen peloponnesiacum01.jpg and File:Cyclamen peloponnesiacum02.jpg). Compare them it with that he provided as subsp. peloponnesiacum (File:Cyclamen peloponnesiacum03.jpg and File:Cyclamen peloponnesiacum04.jpg). --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 14:25, 29 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Mark has in the meantime provided Wikimedia with rhe required declaration of consent. The pictures have been restored. --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 12:08, 4 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Epithets in Homer edit

Hello and thanks for your contributions.

I didn't notice that "white-armed" was already on the General list, so do remove exesive occurences.

Now, regarding Nausicaa, the Poet gives an excuse (wash her cloths) in order to go to the seashore and meet Odysseus. Besides, Nausicaa is a princes, not an average "working girl" therefore (unlike the chlamys of Eumaeus) I wouldn't be surprised that even her unwashed linen would be 'radiant'. --Odysses () 22:32, 12 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pomegranate edit

Hi. I noticed your last edit on the Pomegranate page regarding the Foliage and fruit section. Can you explain the use of the word "astringent" instead of "bitter?" I am not arguing against the use, but I would like to understand the reason for the change. Are there sources to support the use of either word? Frankly, I don't know where editors got this information. Thanks. CreativeSoul7981 (talk) 08:10, 25 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

I just happened to be tasting pomegranate pulp that day, and I noticed that it was astringent, slightly puckering up my mouth (though I didn't taste all that much). Then I found an online source that described it as astringent, so I used the word in the article. I didn't put in the ref, though, which I suppose I could do.

Tannins and astringency are mentioned on the Purdue page in the first ref, so I'll add that as a ref too.

I prefer the word "astringent" because it's more specific than just "bitter" — some things are bitter that are not also astringent. — Eru·tuon 17:41, 25 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hypocotyl edit

Thanks for your correction to the storage organ article. Actually the wording is directly from Kit Grey-Wilson's monograph on Cyclamen (now referenced in the article), but I agree that it's misleading in that the hypocotyl is the stem of the seedling, but the junction of the root and stem of the mature plant. I've added some referenced notes at the bottom of the list which clarify this. I notice that you've written quite a lot on Cyclamen -- a very interesting genus to me, too.
