Welcome message

Hi ElectricEye. I'm a little confused. Are you gently telling me I am doing something wrong.I'm not quite sure why I have been sent this tutorial and I will be glad of advice.Sibadd 19:14, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

I don't see that you've done anything wrong. I just noticed no one ever welcomed you to Wikipedia. :) --ElectricEye 19:16, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

The same VERY late instructing welcome message seriously confused me, too. --Ollj 20:03, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for the confusion. I only noticed you had no welcome so I wanted to welcome you even if late. Sorry for the late welcome. My purpose is not to warn people or stop them from doing anything wrong, but to encourage involvement even if they are vandals. I encourage even vandals to learn and practice where their edits won't be considered vandalism. I leave the warnings and other treatments, such as blocking, up to other members. And again, I'm not saying you are vandalising or anything like that, I just came across your name as someone who didn't have a welcome :) --ElectricEye 20:07, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Yup, also count me as confused by this. I know it wasn't intentional, but I did feel like I'd done something wrong or stepped on someone's toes! I would hope that most people who go to the trouble of signing up (rather than using an anonymous IP to edit) have already skimmed through the guidelines a little. Arg 20:37, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm beginning to think people are feeling this way because their name is in red, but that's because they haven't edited their user page yet. So if you did anything wrong it might be that you haven't edited your user page yet. :) --ElectricEye 20:40, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
I think I probably felt it was something I'd done wrong because you added the message just after I'd made a minor change... if I had received your welcome while I wasn't online, I wouldn't have assumed it was my fault. Just a thought! No worries. Arg 20:48, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Why did I get sent here? Ohnomad 10:58, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

HI about my welcome

I wasn't sure if I got a welcome because I reverted a page of Richard Belzer's Biography to the point where I'd made an edit, but I did so to get rid of some troll activity. Someone logging in as Bill Maher (I thought that wasn't allowable on Wikipedia-that is using a celebrity's name) made malicious changes to the Biography, adding fictious quotes in keeping with things that have recently been appearing on blog sites in response to comments made by Belzer on Maher's talk show that were precieved as anti-military, ultra-liberal. I could not contact the user as they had left no email and so I felt I had no other way to deal with the issue than to revert the article. perhaps others feel I should have handled that differently by adding in the recent controversy? Animaltalker 21:12, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

thanks

Thanks for the information and welcome message! I actually started out with the fax paus of a vanity article, but your welcome message and some helpful advice from other editors helped me learn more about the Wikipedia project. It inspired me continue contributing.Seanhood 21:19, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi ElectricEye

Thanks for your welcome message. I would like to ask you how to do if I "damage" an article accidentally ?

Amastan, April 12, 2006

Thanks ElectricEye

No, I haven't damaged any article. I'm currently writing the Berber names of some Algerian placenames in Wikipedia, especially the names of the Algerian wilayas).

I have written a very short article about Ait Menguellet, an Algerian Berber singer. His full name is Lounis Ait Menguellet. "Lounis" is his first name and Ait "Menguellet" is his last name. How can I edit the title of the webpage ?

Thanks :-)

I have solved the problem :-)

Hi ElectricEye, I have solved the problem of Ait Menguellet. I entered into the article of Kabylie (an area in Algeria), and I added the first name "Lounis" to Ait Menguellet, then I opened the new red link and I pasted in it the short article about the artist, and now, the title of the article is "Lounis Ait Menguellet".

Goodbye

Thanks

Merging

Hi there. I'm trying to move the Ruling planet article to Domicile (astrology) because domicile is the more traditional/formal name for a ruling planet. However, I'm fairly new to Wikipedia and I am having trouble doing so. Could you possibly help me out? Thank you! Sam 22:39, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi Sam. Since Domicile (astrology) already exists, you can merge Ruling planet into it. To propose a merger, place the tag {{merge|OTHER PAGE}} at the top of each page. It will then appear like this:

It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with OTHER PAGE. (Discuss)
You can read more about merging at Wikipedia:Merging and moving pages (Shortcut: WP:MM). --ElectricEye 03:56, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Notable

Dear Sir,

If being notable is having YOU know about it or more than a certain number of google hits--wouldn't that be considered a bias view? I thought this was an encylopedia of sorts? EZZIE 08:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ezzie. I understand what you mean which is why I abstained from voting. I am a member of the Wikipedia Welcoming Committee and only came across TLIP article in following up on new users to see if they need help with editing. If you could provide some refences to reviews or articles written about TLIP that would help prove to the others that the article could be kept. --ElectricEye 11:57, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
Article scans which merely mention the film are at Bay Currents until someone deletes them which I'm sure may happen. There are more, but those are all I have digital scans of for now.
Take Care EZZIE 18:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
There are more than 150 hits for TLIP on google according to discussion. And if Bay Currents had an article mentioning the film maker. I would say it is notable. Can you please state the name of the article and date. Post it to the AFD discussion and also cite it in the TLIP article. If you don't want to, then just post it to my discussion page here and I will get the reference up on the AFD page and TLIP article and change my vote to keep. Waikiki!!! --ElectricEye 06:31, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Bay Currents

Scans of the Bay Currents Article are on Wikipedia at the Bay Currents page. EZZIE 07:18, 16 April 2006 (UTC) Yeah, the articles are still up on Bay Currents and it is mentioned under the press section of The Long Island Project EZZIE 07:21, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Berber Wikipedia

Hi ElectricEye

I need you help :s I want to start a new Wikipedia in the Berber language but I don't know how to do, because my language is a little special. In the Wikipedia encyclopedia, the article talking of my language is titled "Berber languages", which means that the Berber language is viewed as a family or a "group of closely related languages" and not a single language with various dialects. However, we as Berbers, we view that our language is the same, although there may be big differences between the dialects of different areas. We can at least consider that the Berber dialects of the northern part of North Africa (Jabal Nafusa in Libya, Aures mountains, Kabylie and Chenoua mountains in Algeria and all the dialects of Morocco) are the same language and their speakers can communicate with one another without much difficulty. The problem is that I haven't found the code of the Berber language (called Tamazight by our people). The variety of Berber I speak is called Kabyle (or Kabylian). This is the Berber dialect of Kabylie, an area situated in the east of Algeria, but we, as Kabyles, we don't consider it as a language for itself, completely different from the Chaouia daialect of the Aures mountains or the Chenoua dialect of wester Algeria which are linguistically and geographically close to the kabyle language. If I accept to add a new Wikipedia in the "Kabyle" language, then there is a risk that other Berbers who speak close dialects would feel rejected by the name "Kabyle", as not all Berbers speak the Kabyle dialect. "Kabyle" has the connotation of "regional", and not all the Berbers live in Kabylie :-) In order for us to start a Wikipedia in the Berber language, we have to make one that would unite all the Berbers, since the grammar and the basic vocabulary of their dialects are the same, and the neologisms of our modern language are the same in all the dialects ! So how can I find a code for my language and ask the Wikipedia team to add it as the "Berber/Tamazight language" ?

Amastan, April 13, 2006 7:06 a.m. (GMT + 1)

Hi Amastan. I don't know how to start Wikipedia in another language but I know it is done. Try asking at the people at Wikipedia:Village pump. The people there know a lot about the technical aspects of Wikipedia. ---- ElectricEye 20:53, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi ElectricEye

Thanks for your help, I'll try to ask the people of Wikipedia Village Pump about how to create a Wikipedia in my language (Berber). Thanks and good bye :-)

My Edits Are Gone IMMEDIATELY!

Hey Electric Eye, thanks for the welcome. I signed up last night, made some major changes to Digital Pianos and Pianos section, and now they are all gone.

I figured it was an error because I just activated my account, so I re-put them back.

Any advice -- they didn't violate rules I don't think?

STV0726 18:32, 16 April 2006 (UTC) STV0726

Hi STV0726. Yes I see what happened. You didn't violate any rules. What happened was a member, who patrols recent changes, removed your edits because he saw that you were a new user making changes without citing references. I looked at your edits and they seem alright to me. If others continue to challenge your changes, you may have to give them a reference to show that your contribution is correct. Let me know if you need help with referencing if it comes to that. --ElectricEye 18:39, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Okay Thanks. I don't feel good about that however -- my source is owning a Yamaha digital piano, and having played on a Kawai let alone been to their website many times.

I don't quite understand the source siting method.

STV0726 19:28, 16 April 2006 (UTC)STV0726

Referencing is easy. After a sentence add this <ref>NAME OF REFERENCE, AUTHOR, DATE, ETC</ref>. Put in the name of the reference, etc. Then at the bottom of the article make a section ==Notes== and on the line under it put <references/>. Let me know if you need help with this. --User:ElectricEye (talk) 14:51, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
Take a look at Guqin and you'll see how it's being done. --User:ElectricEye (talk) 14:55, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks!

Appreciate your help! For great justice. 22:15, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

No problem. If you have any questions, you can ask me at my talk page. If I'm not around you can always ask at the Wikipedia:Help Desk. I noticed another user was accusing you of making personal attacks. I understand you did not intend to. You should read this policy (Wikipedia:No personal attacks (WP:NPA)) because any time you make any comment about another user rather than talking about content it is considered a personal attack. I know it is pretty strict, and I think some Wikipedians are working on revising the policy. But for now, avoid making any comments about other users and just talk about subjects of the articles and related pages (nominations for deletions, Discussions, Images, etc.) Have fun! --User:ElectricEye (talk) 22:28, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi ElectricEye, thank you for talking with RGTraynor and James for me. It is much appreciated. Over the last couple days they have been fairly rude to me, so thank you for taking a minute just to speak with them. Have a good night, Kroche14 05:06, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Wiki employment

how do you become a employer of wikipedia ? and how much does it pay ? (unsigned comment by Relentless gamer 04:48, 29 April 2006 (UTC))

Hi Relentless gamer. I think there are only a couple of people employed by Wikipedia, the rest of us are all volunteers. --ElectricEye (talk) 04:50, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

vandelism

what if you feel the info is wrong and would like to change it ? is that really vandelism ? isnt the whole consept of wikipedia the freedom to change articles, huh ? (unsigned comment by Relentless gamer 05:06, 29 April 2006 (UTC))

I don't think you are vandalizing. In my view you are a new user who is having fun which is a good thing. There are other users here who are not as welcoming and will say you are vandalizing and block you. I am trying to prevent this as you seem to be someone interested in getting involved with Wikipedia. Let me know if you need any help or have any questions. Have fun!!! ^_^ --ElectricEye (talk) 05:11, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

???

what is the sandbox ? i dont have time to read policys and im dislexic so... (unsigned comment by Relentless gamer 05:10, 29 April 2006 (UTC))

The sandbox is a page where new users can experiment and learn how Wikipedia coding works. You can find it here Wikipedia:Sandbox. --ElectricEye (talk) 05:13, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Q

can i be kicked off or have my profile deleted or blocked if ppl say i am "vandalising" pages by making changes which is the whole point of the wikipedia site ? (unsigned comment by Relentless gamer 05:15, 29 April 2006 (UTC))

Yes, Wikipedia is very strict about this. Some new users have been blocked immediately with very little warning. I encourage you to make changes, just make sure your changes can be verified to a reliable source and make a note of your source in the edit summary. --ElectricEye (talk) 05:18, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
