Music Samples Help edit

{{helpme}}

Hi Darth Mike! Thank you for your kind non-lightsaber-through-torso welcome!

I'm new to all of this but love Wikipedia. Recently I saw you guys are gearing up for a huge media undertaking. I have a lot of compact discs that I have (I'm an audiophile) extracted to good quality files. I think I understand Fair Use and am starting with my favorite albums uploading a low quality 10% length or 30s (which ever is less) track to each of the track listings on these existing albums.

I asked another community about it but got no response and just went ahead anyway. I need someone to review David Bowie's Hunky Dory album for me and let me know what I did wrong and what would be an improvement if I started doing this en masse. Will this stuff be ripped down by someone deeming it "unencyclopedic"? Where do I draw this line? I have a lot of classical music (this is what I have the most questions about), classic rock, jazz, blues & even a bunch of very recent (not-so-popular) indie rock.

Please let me know if I am wasting my time or if this is what the media preparedness was for!

Hi, This might help. Spinach Monster (talk) 16:24, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Spinach Monster for trying to help me but I didn't find anything there that talks about music and what is/is not encyclopedic about music or media clips containing music. If we have an article for a song, does that warrant me adding a fair use clip? eldavojohn (talk) 18:20, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

In all likelihood, you're wasting your time uploading them, as I doubt they'd be allowed under fair use. For more opinins, you should ask your question here as well.-- Darth Mike  (join the dark side) 18:26, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I added a section to that page and will see what they say. So far I've done it for Hunky Dory and am waiting to see if that gets torn down. Thanks for your help Darth Mike & Spinach Monster! eldavojohn (talk) 18:44, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ekeland's variational principle edit

Hello. Please look at my recent edits to Ekeland's variational principle. Notice that:

  • You didn't tell the lay reader that mathematics is what the article is about. I put that into the first two words.
  • I linked to the eponym (you may want to check my spelling, etc.).
  • ndash rather than hyphen in Stone–Weierstrass theorem.

Also, I linked to optimization problem. Michael Hardy (talk) 19:04, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with File:David Bowie - Andy Warhol.ogg edit

Thanks for uploading File:David Bowie - Andy Warhol.ogg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --FairuseBot (talk) 00:43, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

My Encounters with Fairuse Bot & Desperate Need for Advice edit

Carnildo, thank you for the wonderful creation that is Fairuse Bot. It's the closest thing I've received to guidance in my venture to add some non-free fair use clips of well known songs to Wikipedia. Thanks to you I have now mastered the non-free use rationale tag! ... or have I? I have added a clip for every song of Hunky Dory, one of David Bowie's most critically acclaimed albums. And am waiting to see if they'll be torn down. Or if I've done a shoddy job. Or if my formatting is slightly off. The only guidance I've received has been not to bother as they will most certainly be torn down. But I have read up on copyright law (on Wikipedia and off of it) and think I am completely within Fair Use laws for music. Please, {{helpme}} I would appreciate it if you or someone you know could give me guidance or tell me to stop wasting my time trying to contribute. eldavojohn (talk) 02:42, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

The problem with File:David Bowie - Andy Warhol.ogg is that you've provided the name of the article as an external link rather than an internal link, and so the bot can't see it. Without an internal link, you need to provide the exact name of the article the track is used in, because the bot can't follow redirects to find out where the link should be pointing. Other than that, the original rationale looks good. I don't see anything wrong with the other tracks I've checked. --Carnildo (talk) 03:18, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
