ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Edwardx. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewing

Hello, Edwardx.

As one of Wikipedia's most experienced Wikipedia editors,
Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. (After gaining the flag, patrolling is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. Thanks. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 09:09, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

ANI Experiences survey

The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (led by the Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) is conducting a survey for en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

Please be aware this survey will close Friday, Dec. 8 at 23:00 UTC.

  Wiki Loves Women African Feminists
Congratulations for finishing 1st place in the African feminists Contest ! - Anthere (talk) 15:10, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

Quite an achievement on top of the WiR one ! Thank you for all the hard work. So appreciated ! (I will push for their translation in other languages now...)
For your price, please get in touch with me by wikimail and provide me with an email that works and can be communicated to Wikimedia CH. Thanks again ! Anthere (talk) 15:10, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

Hello Edwardx. Checking in... did you receive my wikimail ? Best Anthere (talk) 12:27, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your kind words, Anthere. It was a fascinating journey, doing one bio for every country; soon decided to focus on living activists, and tried to cover a range of issues, to show the wide spectrum of challenges facing women in African countries. No wikimail received; that service does seem a little hit and miss. Edwardx (talk) 14:52, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hello Edwardx. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. TonyBallioni (talk) 21:46, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

To add to the above, not only has Cherry Marshall been waiting over four weeks for a QPQ, but two nominations from December have also been waiting overlong for QPQs:

Have just done a QPQ for Victoria Hughes. There are now no other articles in need of a QPQ review at present. Strange, yet true. I will keep checking back, and will review two more as soon as I can. Edwardx (talk) 14:14, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
QPQ reviews now completed for all that were outstanding, and even have a "spare" QPQ up my sleeve. In future, I shall do the QPQ first, to avoid others having to spend time chasing. Edwardx (talk) 12:02, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
There's a distinct lack of hooks at DYK at the moment. You're not the only one waiting for something to review. Guessing it'll get busier in the new year. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:29, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Edwardx, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Speedy deletion nomination of Margaret Cooper (cryptologist)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Margaret Cooper (cryptologist) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. DYK for Tom Cox (highwayman)

On 31 December 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tom Cox (highwayman), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the highwayman Tom Cox kicked the priest and hangman out of the cart taking him to be hanged at Tyburn (pictured)? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tom Cox (highwayman). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Tom Cox (highwayman)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Proposed deletion of Vlada Borovko

The article Vlada Borovko has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of notability; sources are a bio from a creative agency, some other non-independent sources and a passing mention. Nothing better found via Google News.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Huon (talk) 10:27, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

Nomination of Vlada Borovko for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Vlada Borovko is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Vlada Borovko until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Huon (talk) 10:49, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Edwardx. I would like to suggest edits for the Sherman Kwek article, since he is CEO of City Developments Limited (CDL), and not Hong Leong Group. The edits can be made in the first line, last line and profile title of the article. Also, his father Kwek Leng Beng is Executive Chairman, and not CEO, of CDL and Hong Leong Group. You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Alison Dunlop

Thank you for your intervention. There is reference to Dunlop in the Dictionary of Scottish Painters by Julian Halsby and Paul Harris - https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=02IYSwAACAAJ&dq=dictionary+of+scottish+painters&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiC8eK258_YAhUHmbQKHUyxBN0Q6AEIJzAA

Arts administration in Scotland is very poorly referenced generally. The subject of the article is notable for her large influence and many positions held and innovation in that field, as well as for her art. She co-founded ESSA which as an umbrella organization has provided financial support for three of the four major painters' organisations in Scotland (which might not have survived in their present form without that support). ESSA deserves a WIKI article in its own right, as does the Scottish Arts Club, of which she was Arts Convenor for many years. The purpose of the article is to help build that history of those arts organisations West Art (talk) 11:41, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

You are making what seems to be a reasonable case for keeping the article on Alison Dunlop, which has already become less promotional since I first nominated it for deletion. As an articles for deletion discussion has begun, it would be more appropriate if you made these arguments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alison Dunlop. Also, please read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and make a declaration if you have any such conflict regarding the subject of this article. Edwardx (talk) 11:59, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Edward, you have anything to add at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/IMZahidIqbal ? --Saqib (talk) 13:50, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Thank you Saqib, for starting that. Have added some comments. Had them down as a probable COI/paid editor, but was unaware of possible socking. Edwardx (talk) 14:19, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
If and when you get some time, please try to nominate more pages for deletion created by User:EShami, which would fails to meet the notability guidelines. Apart from BLP's, several articles related to Pakistani government entities hold bare notability. --Saqib (talk) 14:43, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
Normally, I would not do so without an AfD, but for some of those articles, changing them to a redirect to a parent organisation might be the best solution. Will have a look soon. Edwardx (talk) 17:05, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Some advice

Hi. I'm not one for having a go at other editors so please don't take this the wrong way, but I think you should give WP:G11 another read. The wording of the policy is that articles have to be exclusively promotional to qualify for G11. I've declined a few G11 nominations of yours on notable subjects that just need a bit of a copyedit. Let me know if you need any help. Regards ElAhrairah inspect damageberate 12:48, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

That's fine, Elahrairah. I'm relatively new to seriously trying to tackle COI/paid editing. Agreed I was over-zealous with those two, one of which has now gone to AfD. However, if one looks at the CSD log, my track record on G11s isn't too shabby. Edwardx (talk) 21:08, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
Yep. I know CSD logs can be important down the line... hence why I'm giving you a heads up. No one wants black marks on that record right? ElAhrairah inspect damageberate 22:52, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Template:Did you know nominations/Mandisa Thomas

Edwardx, are you planning to return to your review of this nomination soon? If so, it strikes me that since this all happened in 2017, ALT1 should perhaps recast in past tense, but it's up to you. BlueMoonset (talk) 22:40, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

Edwardx, it's been another week. Please take a couple of minutes to revisit this nomination; you've been absent for over three weeks. Thank you. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:28, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
Sorry about that, BlueMoonset, and thank you for another reminder. After some considered thought and a little tweak, we are good to go. Edwardx (talk) 09:58, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Dear Mr. Edwardx

I appreciate your contribution to Wikipedia . Could you please provide an official explanation to your action regarding my post of information in Irfan Gunsel page. "Unexplained removal of cited content" is not sufficient explanation to your action, please kindly point to mistakes that is not appropriate for Wikipedia posts.

Best Regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.30.137.2 (talk) 07:47, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Well, you did remove cited content without explanation. And the information you added, whilst cited, all the cites were essentially the same, and none were independent. Plus, the text was excessively verbose, and in the form of a number of very short paragraphs, when the whole thing could have been covered in a sentence or two. Wikipedia is meant to be a summary of human knowledge. Edwardx (talk) 10:02, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Euphemisms

See Dictionary of Euphemisms, published by Oxford University Press. "Late" is a euphemism for "dead". This is kind of common knowledge. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 10:45, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

What I was trying to get across was that there is a stylistic issue here too. To my ear, "deceased" sounds odd, in that one might infer that his father died before he was born. And if one should prefer simpler language, why not "dead", although it sounds ugly. The sentence would read, "He is the son of the deceased Samuel Curtis Johnson Jr and Imogene Powers Johnson, and the great-great-grandson of company founder Samuel Curtis Johnson Sr." And it begs the question is Samuel Sr still alive? Perhaps we could drop late/deceased, and add (1928-2004) instead? Edwardx (talk) 11:09, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
As long as the euphemism is gone... NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 11:12, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Blossom's Inn

On 30 January 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Blossom's Inn, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a porter at Blossom's Inn (pictured) was revived by treatment that included bleeding, brandy, and a turpentine enema? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Blossom's Inn. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Blossom's Inn), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
