ArbCom 2017 election voter message
Hello, Edwardx. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

New Years new page backlog drive
Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!
We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!
The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.
Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:
- The total number of reviews completed for the month.
- The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.
NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Arts administration in Scotland is very poorly referenced generally. The subject of the article is notable for her large influence and many positions held and innovation in that field, as well as for her art. She co-founded ESSA which as an umbrella organization has provided financial support for three of the four major painters' organisations in Scotland (which might not have survived in their present form without that support). ESSA deserves a WIKI article in its own right, as does the Scottish Arts Club, of which she was Arts Convenor for many years. - You are making what seems to be a reasonable case for keeping the article on Alison Dunlop, which has already become less promotional since I first nominated it for deletion. Recent changes
- Bureaucrats on Wikimedia wikis where the Translate extension is installed can now add and remove the translation administrator permission by default. Administrators of wikis where this extension is enabled can add and remove this permission to or from themselves. Wikis that used a different configuration before have not changed. [1]
There is a new Discourse test support channel for Wikimedia developers. You can ask questions or answer others questions about MediaWiki and Wikimedia software development. [2]
Problems
- Last week's MediaWiki update was rolled back. This was because of a bug that changed non-ASCII characters when a page was edited. [3][4]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 January. It will be on all wikis from 18 January (calendar).

Future changes
- A few hundred wikis with less than ten high-priority errors in Linter categories will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 31 January. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed in the middle of 2018. [5][6]

Hi. I'm not one for having a go at other editors so please don't take this the wrong way, but I think you should give WP:G11 another read. - With the new OOUI look menus and popups can open upwards instead of downwards. This was meant to make long dropdown menus easier to use. Sometimes these menus have been overlapped by other things. This is now fixed. [9]

- Well, you did remove cited content without explanation. And the information you added, whilst cited, all the cites were essentially the same, and none were independent. Plus, the text was excessively verbose, and in the form of a number of very short paragraphs, when the whole thing could have been covered in a sentence or two. Euphemisms

- What I was trying to get across was that there is a stylistic issue here too. To my ear, "deceased" sounds odd, in that one might infer that his father died before he was born. And if one should prefer simpler language, why not "dead", although it sounds ugly. The sentence would read, "He is the son of the deceased Samuel Curtis Johnson Jr and Imogene Powers Johnson, and the great-great-grandson of company founder Samuel Curtis Johnson Sr." And it begs the question is Samuel Sr still alive? Perhaps we could drop late/deceased, and add (1928-2004) instead? Edwardx (talk) 11:09, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
