Graham Eccles

Another example of the storytelling style in which Eccles excels. Here his poem Happy little rebels deals with the Oxfordshire Rebellion 1596

Happy little rebels

Bartholomew Steere was an alright chap But the times that he lived in were pretty crap Enclosure had hit him like a brick in the face He had lost his land, and his pride, and his place Knowing his friends were in the same kind of state He called for rebellion against the gentrys' estates So down Hampton Poyle and up Hampton Gay A ragged little procession did wind its way It wasn’t a revolution, at least not for them For theirs was an army that consisted just of ten Up Enslow Hill on a cold foggy night The men, well most boys, they were up for a fight With rusty pikes and antique swords They swore revenge on oppressive lords So there they did gather to wait for the rest But come the next day they were damp and depressed Still just ten, but now pretty cold They shuffled back home not feeling so bold So the Oxfordshire rebellion had fallen down flat And you would be forgiven for thinking that was that But gossip spreads quickly up Hampton Gay So the Landlord was told inside of a day Chinese whispers were bandied about And by the end of the week the coppers came out Five men arrested and taken to jail Gagged and bound with no chance of bail Tortured and beaten and stretched on the rack For once they rebelled there was no going back Through the streets of London were the happy rebels led And hung by the neck ‘til dead, dead, dead.

A sad bitter end to this brave little story Of Bartholomew Steere and his quest for glory
