Barnstar and a quick question

Heh, sorry I forgot to put the barnstar up. Also, I got a quick question. I don't know if you've heard of it, but the WPTC has an IRC channel, which is a great place to talk about the project. Julian and I are usually on (Julian more than me). The instant communication is great for dealing with small issues, and talking about stuff in general. If you're interested, a lot of people use Mibbit.com. Just click here; next to IRC: click on the scroll window and find "Freenode". Then, put Dylan620 as your "nick", and #wiki-hurricanes as your channel. I hope you stop in some time. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:12, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks! You too, Happy Turkey Day. BTW, I saw that your edit on my user page gave you 125 points for Wikipediaholism. What was the question for those points? ;) ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:29, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

welcome messaging

Thanks for posting welcome messages to new users. Please note it is advised to wait until a user edits before giving him a welcome; it can sound quite patronising "Welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions to this free encyclopedia." "I haven't done anything yet" and may also "scare" new users. Ironholds (talk) 14:18, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Userboxes

I just wanted to know, I would like to put some userboxes on my userpage. but how?

User:Dylan620/Christmas

Hi Dylan620. I moved Template:User:Dylan620/Wiki-Christmas to {{User:Dylan620/Christmas}} since user templates are better controlled in user space. I also added usage instructions to your subpage. In addition, please consider joining Wikipedia:WikiProject Holidays/Christmas task force. Thanks. -- Suntag 15:34, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Some crazy idea I've had for a while

If an editor is banned by consensus, they must stay banned until either their ban expires, or there is a consensus to unban them. Of course, if they are unbanned, anybody is welcome to adopt them. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:45, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Userboxes, adoption.

Yes. I know how to make a userbox already, (see my userpage) and as of December 5, 2008, i have around just 90 edits, so an adoption would be ideal. BtW, how old are you? im 11.--Renereynoso (talk) 02:53, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Your ArbCom Vote

Thanks for your interest in this year's ArbCom elections. Unfortunately, we were required to set a criteria for voters, and that was decided to be the following:

  • Voters must have a registered account that was created on or before November 1, 2008.
  • Voters must have made 150 edits to articles on that account on or before November 1, 2008.

According to an automatic check, which I confirmed by looking at your contribution history, you have not met the requirements. Either you have not made 150 edits to articles (these edits must be in the main namespace) or you did not make them before the deadline of 23:59:59 November 1, 2008 (UTC). I've indented your votes. If you believe I sent this message in error, and that you do meet the requirements, please let me know on my talk page. Thanks, ST47 (talk) 11:20, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

trust in wiki

Me and Bmoc2012tms are attempting to start a wikiproject based on the fact that many people might not trust wiki due to the fact that anyone can edit. we ar trying to make it some that everyone has full confidence in us. We need to let people know about the vast amount on technology we have to reverse vandalism and other things. Most people think we cant keep track of every single edit. help us show that they can have complete faith in us.

P.S. please alert as many people as you can about this thank you DCsniper207 (talk) 20:45, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Happy Holidays

Wow, that's quite the elaborate Christmas card; thanks, and Happy Holidays to you, as well.

While I don't have a problem with it, there are some editors who might be opposed to such a large card on their talk page. Not a big deal, but I would limit how many pages you stick that on. Cheers, –Juliancolton Happy Holidays 00:33, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

RE:Coaching

Hi there Dylan,

I'd be happy to coach your friend, now I'll start reading up on coaching -> your friend will be the first user I've coached!

The Helpful One 19:20, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Just out of interest, is there anything in particular that your friend wants to learn about during coaching? The Helpful One 19:24, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Ah, that might be a problem unfortunately. I'm going out for a couple of days tommorow, so I probably won't be back until Saturday! :( The Helpful One 00:24, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

You should coach

It looks like your friend already has a coach, but I couldn't help but notice your comment that you aren't experienced enough to coach or mentor.

I think you are ready. You know your way around Wikipedia and are familiar enough with wiki-ways and wiki-jargon that you could find the answer to pretty much anything you were asked. It's very similar to developing articles on topics you know nothing about. Fun.

Besides, one of the most powerful learning techniques is teaching.

Here's a secret: much of the time, school teachers are only one step ahead of their students. You'd be surprised how often teachers work up a lesson on a topic new to them the very night before they present it to their class. If their students only knew.  :) By the way, I was the admin coach for several admins, and I'm not even an admin myself.

Go for it. Adopt a user.  ;)

Re: A question

I'm sure the administrator who lengthened the user's ban knew what to update. Just out of curiosity, why do you ask? –Juliancolton Happy Holidays 21:36, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Coaching, and an invitation...

I was suggesting that you be an admin coach, not an admin (you don't have to be an admin to be and admin coach). Or become a mentor by adopting a user or two.

Don't worry about editor review, or about becoming an admin. Wait until someone nominates you. In the meantime, focus on the encyclopedia and the people who build it.

By the way, I'm leading a team of advanced editors (and editors who wish to become advanced) in the development of Wikipedia's Outline of knowledge and of key articles that feed into it. We're currently working on the geography section of the outline and for it we're building topic outlines for all the countries of the world. We're also working on related articles.

This project is kind of like going on a tour of the world.

The reason I describe it as "advanced" is because we rely heavily upon wiki-power-tools like WP:AWB and WP:WikEd (requires Firefox), and general power tools that are ideal for Wikipedia like the WP:LINKY add-on for Firefox.

If you are interested in becoming a power user and using power tools to edit large batches of articles at a time, please let me know.

I'll be glad to put you to work.  :)

Bureaucrat

Probably not well, since I never go to RFA anymore. I used to go and vote on editors I knew; all of those have since been promoted. No point really in getting crat nowadays, before it would have been another way to help out the project and/or another way to expand my 'power'. But they made it clear back then they didn't want or need new crats, and I'm sure they're doing fine without me. I'll find other ways of helping the project. --Golbez (talk) 01:04, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Your hard work is about to be deleted from Wikipedia

The article you created, Guacimal is about to be deleted from Wikipedia.

There is an ongoing debate about whether your article should be deleted here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Guacimal. The faster your respond, the better chance the article you created can be saved. This is because deletion debates only stay open for a few days, and the first comments are usually the most important.

There are several tools and other editors who can help you keep the page from being deleted forever:

1. You can list the page up for deletion on Article Rescue Squadron. If you need help listing your page, add a comment on the Article Rescue Squadron talk page.

2. You can request a mentor to help explain to you all of the complex rules that editors use to get a page deleted, here: Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User. But don't wait for a mentor to respond on the deletion page.
3. When try to delete a page, veteran editors love to use a lot of rule acronyms. Don't let these acronyms intimidate you.
Here is a list of your own acronyms you can use yourself: WP:Deletion debate acronyms which may support the page you created being kept.
Acronyms in deletion debates are sometimes incorrectly used, or ignore rules or exceptions.

If your page is deleted, you still have many options available. travb (talk) 01:20, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
