Norman Siegel

Hello Dweller, my name is Norman Siegel and I'm an extremely busy man so please excuse my frankness. I'd like you to reconsider the delete comment on the Israel A. Burns page. I don’t believe that he was given a fair objective disication because of his age. He has notable references and I believe he has done more in the city of Brooklyn then most of the local officials. Edwin Boaler Alletson

Hi, you may have noticed that I moved Ted Alleton's page to his full correct name. The page itself can still be accessed via Ted Alletson, but notice the redirect message at the top of the page. I've also started to build an introduction section for the article... this is meant to provide all the information in summary form so that anyone skimming the article can grasp the basic quickly. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style, Wikipedia:Annotated article and Wikipedia:The perfect article for more information. I've also created the page Alletson's Innings - which at the moment just redirects to Edwin Boaler Alletson. If you decide later that you want a separate article for his innings, you can change it from being a redirect into an article itself. Let me know if you have any problems doing that. Also, I'd appreciate you checking the article to make sure that I haven't missed any information or distorted anything. I'm not a cricket expert, and I'm just summarising the information. Do you have any printed books/magazines that mention Alletson's innings, which we can use to better back up the claims made in the article? If you do, could you please add them to the bottom of the article: author, date of publication, publisher, ISBN number (and if possible, page numbers). Thanks. I've just formatted the refs. If you are interested in how the cite book/cite web thing works: template:cite book and template:cite web. I've also removed the bold formatting from the several places. The usual style is to use bold for the first mention of the article title (in this case, the article has three: Ted Alletson, Edwin Boaler Alletson and Alletson's Innings). It's also good style to only link the first mention of a term, i.e. world record and not the subsequent ones. - Motor (talk) 12:43, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

I know it can seem a bit complicated, but there's only really one important thing to remember: when you enter a new fact/claim/article into Wikipeda you should try to down note where you got the information from -- your source(s). Everything else... things like formatting, typos or organisation... can all be picked up as you go, and are easily sorted out by others. - Motor (talk) 15:20, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

For the start and end date, go to the cricketarchive page of Alletson (http://cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Players/27/27460/27460.html). The "Lists of matches and more detailed statistics" will lead to the list of his first class matches (http://cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Players/27/27460/First-Class_Matches.html). Don't sweat it. This sort of stuff goes on a lot at new pages. In a case like this, which is clearly a speedy deletion candidate, you just politely let the editor know how to oppose the speedy deletion with {{hangon}}. They often give up when you contact them on their talk page, if not, start working through WP:VAND warnings... and if they persist... WP:AIV. - Motor (talk) 10:46, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Greg Wain

Hey Dweller,

I'm currently working on justification for the article Greg Wain, which I will post in the article's talk page. Hopefully it won't need to be too long. But in the meantime, Greg Wain is a headmaster of Australia's second most prestigious school (or is marketed as that anyway) and has made considerable contributions to emotional intelligence. There are also heaps of other things to note about him aswell, and as I mentioned earlier, I'll post them in the article's talk page soon. I hope this satisfies for the meantime...

Persondata on Stephen Fry

It looks ok. I'm not entirely sure whether it's necessary to list "Stephen Fry" as an alternate name though. Two things... it's a good idea to include [[Wikipedia:Persondata]] in the edit summary to clarify for anyone reading what it is (and pass on the instructions). Normal users can't see the data in the page and they wonder what you've actually done. Also, the date isn't actually U.S. style, it's ISO standard: year-month-day, which allows easy sorting by computer. BTW: if you read the persondata page, it tells you how to modify your own Wikipedia stylesheet to let you see the Persondata when viewing the article - Wikipedia:Persondata#Viewing persondata. It makes it easier to see which articles do/don't already have it, and helps you to see whether you have formatted it correctly. There's no need to be bewildered by it... it's standard operating procedure on AFD. The AFD process is so broken and unscalable that it is close to being complete madness half the time. Wait until you get into the middle of the Deletionism, Inclusionism, Exclusionism battles and all the factions in between... and of course, none of the above. I took a look at what they did here - basically copy the warning that had been placed by others on their talk page - and have watchlisted your and their pages to see what may or may not happen next. Verification

List of wars and disasters by death toll seems to be a bit of a mess generally, it could certainly do with some good sources. I am at a bit of a loss as to the purpose of the article to be honest. I cannot in truth see any point in it, though I doubt very much that it would be possible to get it VfD'd. I wonder if the scope of the article is just too big for one thing. I could see some point in having a list of wars, and a seperate list of disasters, but I would just list them alphabetically and I don't really understand the concept of attempting to put figures on the unknowable, at most these are just best guesses. I also wonder how events like the space disasters count as a real disasters, loss of life wise, I mean they vary from the loss of a single life to the loss of seven lives, these events may have been disasters for their respective space programmes, but in terms of the number of individuals that died their inclusion seems a bit odd. Then there's the Murder by individuals section, are we to list every single recorded murder? In the War and military action section it mentions a figure of 30-60 million for the 13th century Mongol expansion, but this seems just daft to me, it's pick a figure time. I also noticed that many, if not most of the comments on the talk page are unsigned, even by IP address, I find this quite disturbing, there are obviously some people here with an some sort of agenda, or maybe I'm being a bit paranoid. Hmmm... I've seen it before, thought not edited. It looks like a bad mess. And a political minefield too. What fun! We could get seriously stuck into it. Actually, rather than arguing the toss over every line, a good start point might be splitting the page into two halves for verified and unverified stats and gradually move constituent parts upwards? Meant to get back to you about the article, I'm a bit pushed for time but think it's a good idea to try to work on this article. By the way the thing that niggled me about the KP article was that my not verified tag kept being removed without a proper explanation. I'm always a bit wary of articles that don't use in line citations, as any new edit may appear to be supported by the list of citations in the article, because it is unclear which citations support which edits. Anyway I got the impression that the KP article is in good hands and any erroneous information will be quickly removed. I am quite keen on verification though and the Listof Wars article could do with some verification, as well as some major editing work. Alun 16:59, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm inclined to believe that it's notable at the moment, since it's one of the very few songs to have been selected for the Contest and then not performed. Hi Dweller - I agree with you in your "wikify" comments... but please take it easy with User: Peter Entwisle. He isn't very tech-savvy but he is a very useful editor - a professional historian and writer (if you look at a lot of New Zealand history articles, you'll see books in the reference lists written by P. Sporting events

Because this is a list, citations shouldn't be needed where the list summarises a figure given in the main wiki article for that disaster. Citations only needed where the Disaster has no corresponding wiki article, or figure is disputed. --mervyn

Actually Dweller, I wouldn't go to the trouble. I've had second thoughts about that particular form of presentation, it's messy and complicated, hard to get right and rather restrictive, and the end result neither looks very good nor is that easy to read in my opinion.

I'm working on a simpler, more elegant and more functional solution for the presentation of data on this page. So if I were you I wouldn't waste too much time on the formatting ATM, unless it's just for your personal edification.

Actually, I might as well show you a quick example of what I'm working towards. This one uses a fixed width text that is normally used for computer code and so on, I don't intend to use such text in the final version, but the layout is pretty much how I want it to be. Just to give you an idea of what lines I'm thinking along. I find this solution to be basically simpler, easier to read and more flexible, in that you can discuss each event at greater length instead of being confined to a wee little box in which you try to fit in one little piece of info or another. I think it looks a lot better too, quite frankly, even in the temporary fixed width text format.

BTW, note that the code to this little table is not really suitable for using as a basis for table code, because the format for fixed width tables is quite different than for normal tables. I'm just giving you this as an example of the type of layout I'm trying to work towards.

Ted Alletson

Hi, Dweller. You were right first time re Alletson's name. He was called Ted and so that is what WP convention requires he should be called here. BTW, the Hebrew I wrote here is a play on words based on his article's title: the phrase dugmah le-mofet means "an example worthy of emulation". Don't know if my writing qualifies, but since our junior colleague and I are new to Wikipedia, I think we'll find a common language to suit our common cause. Why not just write an article about them? Even if they approve, it won't be the right tone... and let's not even go there with POV. I didn't recreate anything. And I don't plan to. If the person that did wants to do so, he should do so with his own efforts, not a copyvio. And if he does so and demonstrates notability, he's done nothing wrong. I was trying to help, so admonish the bad guys. --Dweller 10:57, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

I had no idea that the article was a repost. (Incidentally, as I'm still something of a newbie, how does one know when articles are reposts?) I tagged him for the blatant copyvio and posted a helpful comment on the talk page explaining how the creator of the article could overcome that problem. I've done nothing wrong and deserve no admonishment. You posted your AFD after I tagged and added to the talk page. Now I'm off to improve my mind by finding out what the heck the Lindbergh baby is/was... but I do suggest you've fallen foul of WP:AGF here and I'm not the one in the wrong. --Dweller 21:30, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
