Speedy deletion nomination of Dragon Fruit Project: WIKI HACK

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Dragon Fruit Project: WIKI HACK, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Your username

edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. I saw that you edited or created Dragon Fruit Project, and I noticed that your username, "Dragonfruitproject", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Trammel Museum of Art". However, you are invited to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you personally, such as "Mark at WidgetsUSA", "Jack Smith at the XY Foundation", and "WidgetFan87".

Please also note that Wikipedia does not allow accounts to be shared by multiple people, and that you may not advocate for or promote any company, group, organization, product, or website, regardless of your username. Moreover, I recommend that you read our conflict of interest guideline. If you are a single individual and are willing to contribute to Wikipedia in an unbiased manner, please create a new account or request a username change that complies with our username policy. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. VQuakr (talk) 06:58, 13 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have had to block this user name for the reasons stated above but unlike the hundreds of {{spamusername}} blocks that I have applied, in your case I encourage you to get a new account because your activities seem very suitable. Failures: putting your advert in the (article) namespace - now at User:Dragonfruitproject/advert for the time being - and not stating where the event will take place, neither in your advert here nor on your website. Also leaving the announcement late. There are groups of wikipedians interested in LGBT matters and in Northern California - search and find them. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 09:19, 13 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Requested username:

Request reason:

I am new to editing Wikipedia and did not get a chance to thoroughly read through all the guidelines re: conflict of interest, spam, usernames, etc. After studying the guidelines, I understand why my post was deleted and why my username was blocked. Given the purpose of Wikipedia, it makes complete sense that one must retain a neutral point of view and I will not make these faulty edits in the future to maintain Wikipedia's integrity. I would like to contribute to Wikipedia by editing LGBTQ and/or Asian and Pacific Islander content to reflect accurate information and facts. I will learn how to properly add articles about prominent LGBTQ activist, since there is a dearth of information in that category. I have a collection of primary and secondary resources I will use to credit these said articles.

Accept reason:

Allowing username change to requested username. Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking. Yunshui  07:28, 16 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

With no comment on the unblock appeal (which I've moved down the page), I have some serious concerns regarding the proposed "Wiki Hack" you have planned for this Sunday (quite apart from the terminology, which suggests malicious intent - "Edit-o-thon" would likely be the term used if this were a legitimate project). According to your information, "training will be provided"; I would be interested to know which Wikimedia representatives or Wikipedians will be supplying this training, and especially whether it will cover Wikipedia's inclusion requirements. What I fear is that Sunday will see a spate of inadequately sourced (personal interviews and oral histories are not regarded as reliable sources on Wikipedia) biographical articles about non-notable people, which will quickly be deleted and which may result in blocks that could affect multiple users. The result of that is likely to be another round of disillusioned editors, convinced that Wikipedia is biased and mean because it denied their edits, despite the fact that they didn't bother to do the basic reserach necessary to understand how to engage the Wikipedia community. I sincerely hope that this is not the case, that the training will be sufficiently comprehensive and that the sources that have been gathered meet Wikipedia's requirements; however I would appreciate some assurances regarding this. If the organiser of the project is not even conversant with Wikipedia's username policy, then I have serious doubts over whether this proposed editing spree will benefit Wikipedia, the DragonFruit Project or anyone else. Thanks Yunshui for the constructive feedback. To be honest, this account was created hastily by some volunteers a month ago while they were testing out the editing gizmos to practice. We understand what we did wrong, now! I am the project coordinator and I have been researching plenty of reliable resources and have been in contact with organizers of previous edit-o-thons. "Wiki Hack" was by no means intended as malicious - we were just trying to be creative but we understand why edit-o-thon would be preferred! We will NOT be relying on personal interviews and oral histories. We've already collected a library of published newsletters, books, dissertations, articles, bona fide historical research, etc. Apologies for the misinformation re: our resources. I assure you this will not just be an editing spree and come Sunday our participants will have all the right tools to explore contributing to Wikipedia. We've studied links such as [1], [2], [3], [4] and we will have direct support from the editors who created the South Asian LGBTQ timeline/article [5]. We have been trying to connect with seasoned Wikipedians but haven't had luck. That is why I've recruited a handful of participants who are at least familiar with creating/editing articles. As for the username, again it was a flaw by some of our volunteers attempting to explore, but that is why I am trying to unblock the account so that it will fit the appropriate username guidelines! I hope you consider this appeal and understand that our mistake was in not reading the rules thoroughly. This will NOT happen again. Thank you!! Appreciate the explanation - I have a lot more confidence in this project now. The only issue regarding unblocking this account is that, from what you say, it appears to have had multiple users - if you can assure me that you and only you now have access, then I'd be happy to unblock it. Yunshui  19:07, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
FYI, I'm a Wikipedia editor of 10+ years, and will be attending the Dragonfruit Project's edit-a-thon event to actively advise around Wikipedia style and etiquette to help ensure that future contributions meet Wikipedia guidelines. I'd really appreciate it if you could unblock the Dragonfruitproject account, while folks set up separate individual accounts. Thanks! -Anirvan (talk) 19:41, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Just changed the password. Once this account gets unblocked and my new username approved, I will be the only one with access to this account! Thank you. Dragonfruitproject (talk) 19:58, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Account unblocked (you'll need to pay a visit to WP:CHU to get your username changed before you do anything else). Best of luck with the project - I'm afraid I won't be online on Sunday, otherwise I'd offer to lend a hand. I look forward to seeing the results, though. Yunshui  07:28, 16 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Crystal Jang

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Crystal Jang requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.apiqwtc.org/crystal-jang/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

Just to explain: It looks like you created the article by copying material from your sources and pasting it into the article. That is a strict no-no here. See Wikipedia:Copy-paste. If the article gets deleted, you could recreate it, but only by writing it in your own words. You can and should draw on your sources, but do not copy and do not closely paraphrase. The best place for you to create the article would be in your sandbox, which is here: User:Traytray402/Sandbox. (Click on the redlink to create the sandbox.) That would give you a "safe" place where you can write, rewrite, and perfect the article, without anyone hassling you or threatening to delete it (as long as you don't copy-paste into the sandbox; we don't allow that ANYWHERE). Ask me if you have questions. Good luck with this! --MelanieN (talk) 01:14, 20 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Good news - a couple of other editors have fixed the copy-paste issues, and the "speedy deletion" tag has been removed. --MelanieN (talk) 04:26, 20 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
