Question about "Recent Changes"

I was looking at the Recent Changes page, reverting some vandalism, and I saw some green / red numbers next to people's names and IPs. I'm guessing this is something like karma, meaning that if its - and red, it's someone who has vandalized before, if so, is there anything I am supposed to do other than just undoing the change if its a vandalism to get that number up or down for the editor? Long time, no talk. Hope everything is good with you.

Here's a situation I'm in, and I wanted your suggestion on handling it.

The two articles I've contributed so far each concern a different database management system software product. I work for the company that produces each of these software products. I know you're not supposed to plug your commercial product, but I think I've done a good job presenting factual, unbiased articles on two pieces of software that are "out there" being used by a lot of professional developers in industry, and which are notable for various technical reasons. Many other software product with similar levels of notability in our category (database management systems) are the subjects of articles. To me, this is quite different from getting on Wikipedia and promoting a new brand of cornflakes that has no history or standing.

Here's the prob. There is a template at the bottom of every article in our category, the {{databases}} template. When I published the articles, I added each product to that template.

In the last couple weeks, a couple Wikipedians have gotten together to decide which products in the category are, and aren't, notable enough to stay in the template. And, they kicked one of my articles off.

Here's the rub -- one of the principal critics works in the SQL Server database management system software group at Microsoft -- SQL Server being one of the products that remains in that template. It doesn't seem quite kosher, a person making a supposed "editorial" decision that in fact enhances the visibility of a product in which he has a vested interest (by reducing the overall number of entries in the template, the remaining ones stand out more prominently).

Is there any governing body of Wikipedia to whom I can plead my case? It seems to me this individual should not be making decisions regarding competitors?

I'm wondering, should I just remove that tag? Or is there some protocol to be followed, like contacting the individual who placed the tags there first?

I need your advice please

I did a revert on the Larry Sanger article and apparently it is an administrator who put the information in and didn't like the revert. He put a test 1 warning on my talk page and warnings on a few other editors who also reverted the same information. I did the edit in good faith and put my reasons for the revert so I don't understand the uncivil behavior esp. if this person is supposed to be an administrator. He is really rude. I won't be going back there because I don't do uncivil but I would like to know how to handle something like this that was unprovoked. I only reverted once, others also reverted and explained why they were reverting. He insisted we are vandals and continued to revert back to what he wants in the article. How do I handle something like this and can I delete the warning from my talk page since it was unprovoked and unnecessary. He didn't even make a comment about my edit other than the warning. Just want to update the situation. A couple of nice editors that saw what was going on helped me out and one even cleared up the mess of the template on my talk page for me. I think everything is ok now. I have to admit though that I still find it very concerning if this person that was attacking for no reasons is really and administrator though. No one was being rude and was explaining their edits except for this person. Do the administrators get checks and balances on power behavior like this? Now I am just curious, not upset. I thought of contacting the administrator but found out from the talk page and then going to other's talk pages and comments on mine about this editor was probably not going to be constructive in anyway so I decided against doing anymore than what I did. Hello,

I attempted to substitute a very outdated article about third orders--but it keeps reverting.

As a tertiary myself with a degree in the Theology from Franciscan University in Steubenville where did my thesis on Third Orders, I would like the new article which takes into account the way the Church views third orders today ( as well as the changes in the Code of Canon Law from 1983--which defines their nature) to stand. The old one is very much out of date. Please assist in this matter. I also have contributed to a published work (in Rome-Krakow) regarding a particular Third Order.

I an new to Wikipedia.

User Names

Delldot,

I changed back my username because I was having a difficult time logging in with the other one for some reason. I blame gremlins. (smile) I will likely return to the other username when I figure out how to shift the gears. I was running out of patience and time.

Y was kind enough to assist me with the "Conrad L. Raiford" article. The editor, however, wants me to stop editing because of a possible conflict of interest. I explained that I am an accomplished and learned journalist and have been under your direction. Y wanted to know if Raiford was notable. Delldot, there have been many, many articles written about him:

• One of only six African-American police officers recruited in 1946 by a then all-white Greensboro, North Carolina police department.

• Played for the Homestead Grays in the historic National Negro Baseball League

• 1971 A&T State University Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

• Represented the state of North Carolina during the Munich Games

• As a bail bondsman during the civil rights movement, he often came to the rescue of Rev. Jessie Jackson

• Because of his dedication to human rights, a swimming pool in the historic Warnersville division of Guilford County bears his name

His articles are archived by the Greensboro Daily News and Record and the Carolina Peacemaker. I was in the process of retrieving them. The first ref I noted was not only an obit, but a compilation of many articles authored Jim Schlosser of the Greensboro Daily News and Record.

I would like to continue adding to the article under your tutelage since you and I have already worked together. Is that possible?

in regards to Sonic HedgeHog

Hi, this is Kitra101, the guy who did the spinal cord additions. Just to give you some info, here it is:

There is a signal transduction pathway involving a protein ligand named Hedgehog which is involved in the Hedgehog signal transduction pathway thought to be crucial to fruit fly development. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedgehog_%28cell_signaling%29

Later, another pathway was found and is crucial to human nervous system development. It was similar to that of Hedgehog, so to show that some scientists keep up with modern times and have a sense of humor, the discovers called it Sonic Hedgehog! Discovery

The hedgehog gene (hh) was first identified in the classic Heidelberg screens of Eric Wiechaus and Christiane Nusslein-Volhard, as published in 1978. These screens, which led to their both winning the Nobel Prize in 1995, identified genes that control the segmentation pattern of Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) embryos. The hh loss of function mutant phenotype causes the embryos to be covered with denticles (small pointy projections), much like a hedgehog.

Investigations aimed at finding a hedgehog equivalent in mammals revealed three homologous genes. The first two discovered, desert hedgehog and Indian hedgehog, were named for species of hedgehogs, while sonic hedgehog was named after Sega's video game character Sonic the Hedgehog. In zebrafish, the orthologues of the three mammalian hh genes are: shh a, shh b (formerly described as tiggywinkle hedgehog named for a character from Beatrix Potter's books for children.), and indian hedgehog b (formerly described as echidna hedgehog, named for the eponymous spiny anteater).

Hey no problem. While we are on the subject of science, I noticed you seem to have an NMDA background. So I am studying right now memory and various other neuroscience subjects and have come across this receptor. I am curious as to why NMDA receptors are so crucial for memory. I learned about long term potentiation and how that works in terms of increasing AMPA receptors on the post synaptic membrane, phophorylation of CaMKII and even polyribosomal activity to increase the number of dendritic spines, but I still do not understand what this has to do with storing data. Do you know about this?

So, then you do know a bit about excitotoxicity? Is this the basic idea: Increase NMDA activity will increase intracellular Ca which will act on the mitochondria to induce apoptosis. This is what happens in ischemic strokes.

1. Why would ischemia mimic the action potential that opens voltage gated Ca channels in the presynaptic membrane to induce Ca mediated SNARE fusion and exocytosis of the glutamate?

2. Does it activate the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis in the post-synaptic neurons?

3. Do you know of any negative feedback mechanisms that will attempt to correct the Ca influx?

Can I just make this my section? Ok, so there is receptor cross talk eh? Interestingly, a teacher of mine sent me a paper on a current theory of memory. I have been reading through it and so far, the only thing that they have really talked about is CHOLINERGIC neurons. That was surprising to me since on our test, the concept was that memory was stored via LTP mediated by AMPA and NDMA receptors being stimulated for an extended period of time at a high frequency (~100Hz). We were told the end result of this was the growth of new dendritic spines which reinforce the connection and engrain the memory. However, so far, this paper talks about how cholinergic neurons do this. Isnt the hippocampus made up of a lot of NMDArgic neurons? Are there a lot of cholinergic there as well? The test, went pretty well. We have not been told of our grades yet however, and there was a series of questions over material that nobody can recall having seen in class. Do you know the main functions of the anterior cingulate gyrus, speaking of which? Somehow, this was related to aphasia. I was only aware of Brocca, Wernicke and the anterior fasciculus causing non-fluent, fluent and conduction aphasia, but not aware of a role the ACC plays short of its involvement with interactions with the prefrontal cortex and perhaps in the actual comprehension and emotional response to pain taken from the thalamic relay and interpreted or recorded in the limbic system. Thoughts?

Questions

Hi Delldot, I haven't disappeared or given up yet but I am still having troubles understanding the 'programming' to add things. First, is there an easy way to understand how to edit with using the programming tactics that is used here on Wikipedia? Being disabled I have notes everywhere to remember even minor things.

What does nowiki do? I see this a lot and I don't understand it. Also, on my talk page a very nice editor tried to explain to me how to change font colors and to highlight in color. He said it's done the same way as my new signature. The problem with that is my signature was a gift to me to wear. There has to be an easier way for me to be able to edit. Any ideas or suggestion you could add would very much be appreciated. I get frustrated at times but I really do want to be able to learn how to do things properly and be able to do everything that is available. I have read everything but unfortunately it doesn't stay with me. It's probably do to the medications I have to take, which some are mind altering like pain meds, antidepressants and so forth. I do have to say that a few other editors have taken to helping me a lot and understand my problems. Any suggestions? Is there a tool or something that would help me out?

Right now I am doing mostly reverting of vandalism, spelling corrections and spam removal.
