Fair Use Image

If I create a new image based on a 2-dimensional work of art such as by scanning, photographing, etc. the new image I created is called a "derivative work of art" and has the exact same copyright protection as the original. So, if GSUSA claims copyright of the design of the Silver Award, then a photo or scan of the award is also copyrighted. We have developed the {{Scoutlogo}} template to make it easy to tag 2-dimensional Scouting images that are copyright protected. This template notes that while these images are copyrighted, they may be used under the "fair use" principle in certain circumstances. Generally, fair use limits the display of "Scout logos" to directly relevant articles where the image illustrates a key point. This does not include user pages or templates. Note that I am not the image Nazi, hence I left your image there, but I do encourage people to be responsible to avoid attracting attention by the image Nazis. I tend to be fairly passive in my image behavior. If I notice something like this amiss, I fix it, but I'm not out patrolling for stuff. Sorry it took so long. A minor skirmish happened with the image used in {{User eagle scout}}. The eventual solution was for me to "draw" my own version of the eagle knot. You can do the same, but there is some question about whether an exact replicate, even if hand-drawn, makes it a derivative work. You might want to review the history of the eagle template and image inclusion before you get too much effort into it. Sorry to butt in on this but I came across the case of vandalism while looking at WP:AIV. I think that you are letting teh vandals win by removing the picture! (just my two cents). No problem! I personally think more wikipedians need to have each others backs. I have many many fellow editors on my watch list (and you are now on the list) that I scan for vandalism! Its ok, i know how it feels, my page has been vandalized over 40 times. One of my favorites can be found at the top of my User talk page! not that I am aware of. If it is someboy you suspect, somebody with checkuser can view the ip but I am not sure there is much that can be done. WikiProject Rock music invitation

Hello WikiProject Alternative music member.
WikiProject Alternative music, in my eyes, has proved to be successful "improving the encyclopaedic coverage of articles relating to alternative rock", and improving their quality as well. One specific example I have witnessed is The Smashing Pumpkins article. The page has gone from a mediocre work, to GA status, to FA nomination. Only appropriate, as the Pumpkins are undeniably one of the most influential alternative rock bands on the 1990's and beyond.
This is the stuff I wish to achieve with the somewhat recently ressurected WikiProject Rock music. I hope to also attract attention to rock music articles of all sorts, and hopefully change some to GA or FA status. I invite you to come join us, and not only be a member of alternative Wikipedians, but the rockin' ones as well.

Is this users actions allowed?

• Hey there (:O) ... we have an ongoing debate over here on the status of an article. Now the thing I wanted to bring up was the editing and removal and well forceful rhetoric stating the result of the debate before it has even been decided. The one causing all this is User:Ideogram. I have tried so hard to be loving and understanding during this debate, but now I dont know if what the user is doing is right or wrong. I dont know who to go to, so I figure I may ask someone who is very familiar with the wikipedia world and how this should be dealt with maybe? Not sure. Please help. Only Warning?

User:24.116.14.38 had made only one edit, ever, and you respond with a uw-vandalism4im? Isn't that drastic, and rather frowned upon over at WP:AIV? It also seems counterproductive to issue a threat that you know isn't going to be carried through; which admin do you think is going to actually block an IP after just two incidents? -- Zsero 23:18, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

If a first-time vandal is going to be deterred by a warning, they'll be deterred by test, uw-vandalism1, or uw-vandalism2, whichever seems more appropriate. And starting from there builds a record in the event that they are not deterred, and you have to take it to WP:AIV. Don't want the admins there grousing because you didn't Assume Good Faith ("maybe they thought it was made out of poop and penises"). They're reluctant enough to act against IP vandals who aren't actively vandalising right at the very moment you file the report. Zsero 00:33, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

I wouldn't have reported them to AIV for a first time warning or blocked them had I been an administrator acting on it, but I highly doubt the user thought the subject of the article was made of poop or penises. But for future situations I will go back to issuing lower warnings first. Unless the user is a repeat vandal and has been reverted many times but with no warning, then the user does need a test4. Someone who is vandalizing Wikipedia the way that user was only should have one warning before they are blocked for doing it again, many vandals know they will get multiple warnings and take advantage of it. Maybe they "should have only one warning", but you and I know that that's not what's going to happen. Unless you are an admin, able to block them on their second strike, the only way to get them blocked is to report them to AIV. And getting an IP vandal blocked at AIV is mostly a waste of effort, unless they're active right at this moment. It's certainly a waste of effort if you started with a 4im warning, to a brand-new editor with no history of vandalism. -- Zsero 03:21, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Good to hear it. Were they "actively" vandalising, i.e. doing it right at that moment? Had they received a series of escalating warnings? If the answer to both of those is "no", and you blocked them anyway, aren't you concerned that the IP might be used by more than one person, and you'll be scaring away a potential valuable contributor to WP? Those are the arguments that the admins at AIV keep on making. Oh, and they keep reminding people that "blocking is a preventive measure, not a punishment", so if there's no vandalism going on right at this moment there's nothing to prevent. In any case, if you are prepared to block IPs that house blatant vandals, maybe I should refer reports to you instead of to AIV. How about it? Next time I issue a "final warning", and the IP vandalises again, shall I just drop you a note? Zsero 03:31, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
  • I can understand the non-admin rationale that Zsero is stating; AIV admins seem to prefer the five warning system, so a one warning (while completely fine in a lot of blatant vandal situations) might become an empty threat. — Deckiller 03:26, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
    • I agree with the point that some AIV admins need too many warnings to block a vandal, but every time I report one, I have never had a problem even after just two or three vandalisms and two warnings.       • And every time someone makes that point, it gets countered with "How do you know it's the same person? How do you know this vandal saw the warning you left for the last one? Maybe there are a series of vandals at this IP, each of whom only offends once. And maybe if we leave it unblocked, one day a useful contributor will emerge from that same IP; we wouldn't want to deter that person." See the Talk page for AIV (and the archives) for more.         • What I would say about that is if they want to contribute they need to make a user page and most IP addresses should only be given soft blocks. But if somebody is being horribly disruptive on Wikipedia or making personal attacks they need to have some sort of soft block to prevent further damage. They also worry about things being too punitive over there, which is understandable but there is a line between new user experimenting and people that have no other purpose than to vandalize this project and attack editors. I noticed on your user page that you have adopted four users. I'm not in adopt-a-user, but I am interested in becoming part of it at some stage, as I too, like helping new users. NHS isn't elitist?

You're a member of NHS, and yet you don't think they're an elitist organization? Isn't there a conflict of interest in your 'guarding' of the NHS article, since you are a member?
