Thanks for fixing the talk page for Alma. That article confuses me though. It seems most of the other articles in the project are really complete. How can I get Alma to look as good as Hurricane Able (1951) (hope I did that right) or Cyclone Orson (from another part of the world, but still a nice article)? This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary of the WikiProject's progress and global tropical cyclone activity. From the editors

The project has gone since August without a newsletter, due to a lack of interest in its publication and development. This issue aims to catch up on major events and milestones since late summer 2009, and set a series of goals for the upcoming hurricane seasons. Your help in writing future issues is appreciated.

Typhoons Morakot, Ketsana, and Parma caused extensive damage to China, Taiwan, Philippines, and Vietnam in August and September. Their collective damages total in the billions of dollars and each storm caused hundreds of fatalities. All three of the storms' names were subsequently retired.

Goals for the upcoming season
Hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific and Atlantic basins is quickly approaching. Activity from new users typically increases substantially during the summer months, especially during active periods of tropical cyclone strikes. Precautions should be taken to ensure that content covering ongoing or recent events is kept up-to-date. Moreover, creation of new articles should be discouraged unless the storm in question presents an immediate or long-term threat to land.

Nonetheless, the project should encourage new editors to get involved; for this purpose the standard Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Invite template may be used.

The project should also make an effort to evaluate existing recognized content. A Project audit of featured articles has been proposed; ideally, each article should be reviewed for continued compliance with the FA criteria. Articles that no longer meet the criteria may be nominated for demotion, or alternatively, improved and updated.

Project news
September 2009 – A debate on the numbering of JMA tropical depressions in season articles took place. Much of the discussion can be read here.
October 2009 – The project was featured in a Signpost article, detailing its progress over the past two years.
December 2009 – Multiple Wikipedia Books—organized and printable compilations of related articles—are created under the project's purview.
Nilfanion (talk · contribs) proposed a revamp of the project's track map standards and naming conventions. This is likely a long-term project, and will be largely executed on Wikimedia Commons.
March 2010 – One of the project's core articles, Hurricane Katrina, was demoted from featured article status. Later in the month, it was suggested that more tropical cyclone-related articles are added to the rotating list of the Main Page's Selected anniversaries.

If the page gets blanked and they created it, it's the equivalent of saying "I quit" and you should tag it with {{db-blanked}}instead of reverting and warning. Removing a db tag is one thing, completely blanking it is another. HalfShadow 22:50, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Use of convert template

Hi,

Can you point to a community accepted guideline for me that prohibits the use of the convert template? There are community accepted guidelines for units and it is called the Manual of Style - Numbers. My edits are in accordance with those guidelines. Thanks for your response. A couple of things. My original edit included a correction to the blunder 35 mph (55 mph). Yellow Evan blindly restored this error in his fevered attempt to rid the article of the scourge of the convert template. Hence my request to actually read others edits before blindly reverting. Another editor then attempted to correct the mph error with kph. kph is not the international and MOSNUM accepted abbreviation for kilometres per hour. I remade my edits to correct this. The great benefit of the convert template is that it allows a good chance that the text it creates will be in accordance with MOSNUM and international guidelines. It is not perfect, but its use greatly improves the accuracy and conformity of text related to the conversion of units on Wikipedia. If you want to ban it you need to raise the issue in a wider forum than a Wikiproject. Also blindly reverting constructive edits from an editor who is not a member of an associated Wikiproject or a familiar editor smacks of ownership. I trust this is not the case. If editors don't understand how to use the convert template, rather than just revert edits that contain it why not ask for help in using or understanding it?

On the subject of conversions given by NHC; I am wondering how this is relevant. For example, the cited source (NHC) for the windspeed is given in knots. There are no conversions given in that source. Even if there were, why should we follow the practices of an external organistation? Wikipedia has its own guidelines and consensus for accuracy of conversions, which my edits will generally follow. I note that the convert template has been modified to implement the rather unusual rounding algorithms requested by the storm watching community on Wikipedia. I don't necessarily agree with these changes, though as a concession I used this new, optional, rounding-to-nearest-5 algorithm in my first edit. Even this was not enough to satisfy the firmly held beliefs of the owners of the article. Further, as I said, the source gave the windspeed in knots. The article text for the windspeed was given in miles per hour with a conversion to kilometres per hour. Given the slightly cryptic layout of the source, the article text was hard to verify. Given that knots are not widely used any more, a conversion factor to mph in the citation text or converting directly from knots to km/h, as my edits did, would be clearer.

Additionally, there is no need to give atmospheric pressures in both mbar and hPa; given that they have the same value. Hectopascals would suffice with a conversion to inches of mercury, if required. Again, my edits reflect this.

Lastly, the MOS is a guideline only. It is not a rule. The consensus is however that the guidelines can be followed unless there are good reasons not to. I still can't see why using a template to avoid basic errors and to conform to MOS consensus could be overruled by an undocumented project guideline.

User:Vladwin made another non-constructive edit to the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season page. He increased the wind speeds of Igor and he added that there's a 8 pm advisory for Igor but I reverted it. 'Typhoon Fanapi' is Storm of the Month

 
Typhoon Fanapi approaching Taiwan

Early on September 14, the JMA reported that a tropical depression had formed east of Taiwan. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center soon designated the depression as 12W with PAGASA naming it Inday shortly thereafter. Later on the same day, the tropical depression was upgraded to a tropical storm and was officially given the name Fanapi by the JMA. On September 16, the storm further intensified into a severe tropical storm. That same day, the JMA further upgraded it into a typhoon. Fanapi turned west and intensified into a category 1 typhoon that night. On the following day, the storm further intensified into a category 2 typhoon. On September 18, the storm further intensified to a Category 3 typhoon and moved straight into Taiwan. It made landfall in Hualien County at 8:40 a.m. (10.40am AEST) on September 19, with winds of 162 kilometres (101 mi) and across the island at a speed of 20km/h. Shortly after its landfall, it moved south and again turned east and rapidly weakened into a Severe Tropical Storm. It had a Category 1 equivalent strength at that time. At 06:00 PM (Local time), the typhoon went back into the ocean. Post Storm Analysis proved that the system stayed on land for 9 hours approximately. The storm made its second landfall at Zhangpu County, Zhangzhou, Fujian province, China, at a Category 1 Typhoon intensity. The Storm caused a large scale damage to Taiwan. In the early hours of September 21, Fanapi weakened into a tropical depression over Guangdong province, China. On Septemner 22, Fanapi dissipated completely.

Sorry for changing the page. I am very intrested in hurricanes and those things, and I study them a lot. I heard from one of my friends that Igor was indeed a category 5 hurricane for a brief time, so I thought he had 160mph winds. I went on Wikipedia and saw that it said he only had 155mph, so I changed it because I thought it was wrong. I still think he was a cat.5, because the official winds a hurricane needs to have to be classified as a cat.5 is 156mph, so Igor's winds could have easily went up 1mph before he started weakening. I think they should either scale the winds by their real record(154mph,132mph), or downgrade the scale to 155mph and up is category 5. You can either agree with me, or disagree. I won't change the page anymore, but I won't change the fact that I think Igor was a category 5. This is kind of like what I've seen with hurricane Emily. Lots of places that I've been to on the internet say she was only a category 4 hurricane, but Wikipedia says she was a 5. Same thing with Hurricane Igor, only vice-versa. Many people say he was a 5, and some say he wasn't. And also, what happened with Hurricane Richard? I heard he was a category 1 hurricane with 90mph, but now Wikipedia says he was a category 2 with 100mph. Who changed it? Why can't it say that Igor was a category 5, when clearly he was? Just like it says on hurricane Vince's article, "If it looks like a hurricane, it probably is". Now look at hurricane Igor's picture.Ask yourself this: What does he look like, a category 4 hurricane, or a category 5 hurricane? And the eye? Wow! It looks like a category 5's eye to me! So if it looks like a category 5 hurricane, it probably is! Not being rude here, but I think Igor was a category 5 hurricane, and so do many others. Look at the intensity reports from hurricane Igor. They probably say 155mph winds in estimation, but what do they say without estimation? 156mph&157mph will estimate to 155. The Saffir-Simpson wind scale says category 5 is 156mph and up. If Igor's reports say 156mph 0r 157mph, then he was a category 5, no questions. There are hundreds of things that can prove Igor was a category 5 hurricane, and I can go on and on listing them, but I don't have the time to continue on, so thank you. Take in what I said about hurricane Igor please!

As you know, the National Hurricane Center is a very busy organization, even off season. So, it is going to take a while for all of them to come in. The ones available right now are: Tropical Depression 2, Tropical Storm Colin, Tropical Depression 5, Tropical Storm Fiona, Tropical Storm Hermine, Hurricane Lisa, and Hurricane Otto.

Some of the storms like Igor may not be out until the late Winter/early Spring of next year (January-April 2011). As I said above, the NHC is a very busy organization. Here is a link to keep track of them: Tropical Cyclone Reports. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 03:59, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Ma-on infobox

How does the infobox not work? Right now it's showing the JTWC data, since JTWC uses 1-min which works for the SSHS. There should very much be the information at the top of the article with the latest storm information. That could only work with the current infobox. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:30, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Doesn't it also need to show JMA data? I've tried tinkering with the active template for quite some time now and I still haven't gotten it to work for all the basins. Plus, I don't think we ever use that template outside C/EPAC and ATL articles.Darren23Edits|Mail 18:33, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
I don't think it absolutely needs to. If you think about it, people who might be reading the article in the coming days would be English-speaking tourists who would be more used to 1-min winds. People in Japan, who are used to 10-min and JMA, would be reading the Japanese article. And I don't think that's being small-minded or anything. I do think it'd be useful to have 1-min winds in the infobox. And yes, we have used the template outside of NOAA basins. Alright, I was mistaken about NIO. However, what's wrong with using the current one? It provides an immediate indication where the storm is and how strong it is. If we do it in the Atlantic and EPAC, I don't see why we don't outside the basin. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:57, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Actually, looking at it again, I agree with you how it should only use the main infobox. It's not Wikipedia's job to keep people informed what is happening. If they know about the storm, Wikipedia isn't going to be able to help. I think I understand your first request, basically if I put in a particular wind speed, the template will automatically know to display typhoon or STS or what ever it may be. I was a pilot who flew into Hurricane Hugo during Operation Hawkeye (President Bush ordered federal forces to St. Croix to suppress the violence, protect property, and restore law and order. Elements of the Army, Navy and the Coast Guard, along with a contingent from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) formed Joint Task Force (JTF) 40 for Operation Hawkeye.)and I think its very relevant showing how the Hurricane may have been well over hyped by the media calling 100+ winds. More so when you put it with the buoy data that showed the highest gust at 60 in NC and the Hurricane Hunter Vortex data. It all back's each other up.
